And you would think that this one (with Dan Simmons's and George R. R. Martin's stories and signatures) would be hugely popular.

This is the only King Anthology I own and I love it. To me it represents one of the best (if not the best) authors in 3 different genres, Horror, Sci Fi and Fantasy. My only gripe is the Slipcase is very boring.

Jon, I'd recommend adding GAIMAN to your auction title. He has a huge fan base that doesn't always overlap King or Hill. Good luck on your sales.

No one. IMO, the book is ruined.

Here is the other book I mentioned that I have seen for sale for at least 10 years.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stephen-King-Carrie-1st-in-dj-PETE-FOUNTAINS-COPY-/380220458326?hash=item5886e7c556:m:mDXJ7QvU4NIKmcZ M-RuTG1w

The seller catstarbuck is the eBay username for James Pepper who is a very respected, legitimate rare book dealer and ABAA member in California. I'll bet he is wishing he had never bought these books. Pete Fountain's copy? Really? WGAF?

I actually acquired my copy of Dark Carnival through James Pepper. He was very easy to work with and I was happy with the transaction. However, it was signed by Ray Bradbury, to a personal friend, very close to publication. I'm not sure I'd buy that Shining or Carrie at any price...

I also think the book is ruined. It may have been appealing to a movie buff (not at that price point though) if the inscription was coherent and provided some behind the scenes insight about The Shining. Might as well of had one of the gaffers doodle a kilroy in the book.

Yep, that's the same one linked a few posts above. I'm curious whether one of our members will buy one or all four of the matching numbered volumes.

It's not just those 4 - it's the whole series, including little sisters and TWTTK - #51 - sorry for some reason I didn't see the 2 prior posts that said the same thing ;)

Because the number of people willing to buy a single books outnumber those willing to buy the set.

Yeah, we as collectors are excited about matched number sets, but if you're a seller, they are difficult to sell.

Basically, you're asking a customer to buy an entire complete set for, say, $20,000 - when they probably already have a book or two. So while the sale of each individual book won't make that much money, it will all sell much more quickly.

Nonetheless, lots of people seem to use work time to look not only at the site, but at auctions.

Although it was published in 1996 most of us in the King collecting community first heard of it in 2000. It was an extremely hot item, difficult to find and sometimes selling for high prices for a while and then interest died down. I still think it is an interesting item and have often wondered how the author convinced King to write an intro for such an obscure collection.

I have one signed by Ray Bradbury. Apparently the guy that got it was a member of the press and got the cards signed when he could. I thought it was kinda cool. I plan on putting it in a frame with my favorite Bradbury quote on it, if I can choose one!

Interesting. Pure speculation in the interest of fun.....

- Rumor has it there was an unknown # of LSOE AE's with added, bonus drawings by Whelan (some have surfaced)
- #19 is very significant to both the story and the artist

I speculated this too... and I have to say... shrink wrapped and all... and the most significant number in the series. Think of it this way... Whelan did a painting that is called '19' and is just the number on a fence. Not an impossibility... and could very well be true. Highly doubtful? Perhaps... but won't that be like winning the lottery. Some of those books went missing... as we all know but some got sent out and if this guy did not check.. well.. there ya go!

I agree that it is doubtful. I think nearly ALL the remarques Whelan did are in hands of solid people. I can almost guarantee a "major" Remarque will not surface in a "common" shrinkwrapped book.

I think that numbering the books was the last step in the process before they were sent out. In other words, Whelan didn't know what number would be on the books that he chose to draw in. At least I think that is right. So I think it is highly unlikely that book has a drawing.

Correct me if I'm wrong (but please don't leave anonymous negative rep). I think that none of the beautiful color drawings that were used to advertise the book have ever shown up. Only the smaller sketches have shown up and most, if not all, of those were sold by a former Grant employee. Suspicion is that the nice color drawings are still somewhere at Grant.

I believe you are correct. The company that numbered and shrunkwrapped the books was instructed to note any book they were numbering that had a Whelan remarque in it. Purportedly the books were then removed and kept by Grant Books.

Yes, he does returns. The problems were that he would send 1sts in barely padded envelopes (even when asked it be sent in a box), damaging them in the process. The second time I bought from him, the book was described as LIKE NEW and the book came very well read with stains. Not sure if he had multiple copies and sent the wrong one or not. Sadly, this guy gets in tons of UK editions that I would have loved to buy, but I won't be doing business with him anymore.

I have to speak up, somewhat, on his behalf. I worked with Ziggy during the Secret Santa exchange. He was extremely communicative and nice, listened to my shipping requests and gave me good deals on them. He DOES seem to still have a habit of overestimating his book conditions more than WE would, so seeing pictures of all angles would be a good idea. If I saw a good book from him, at this point, I wouldn't hesitate. You'll have to make your own decision since he does have some negative reputation that is very likely deserved from what's been described. If you ARE looking for UK King, he does seem to be the primary seller to have them. I just wanted to give him some slight and current defense since he isn't on TDT.

It's a matter of Risk Vs. Reward. As always, CAVEAT EMPTOR.

Max price based on recent copies sold should be $2,500 - $3,000. No more than issue price.

Are there any for sale at that price?

Those are just the last documented sales prices from Betts and eBay. David sold a matching set for $2,500 last year and Matt (Lot Guy) picked up a set for $2,000 direct from a bookseller early last year (can't recall who)....

I'm surprised they don't sell for more than that. They are all-the-Chadbourne-you-can-eat buffets.

I'm surprised they don't sell for more too, as they are certainly one of the nicest editions I have seen CD produce. I particularly like that these books were published in a 9 x 12 size.

If I had the money, I would instantly purchase a matching Lettered set, as that is definitely one all-the-Chadbourne-you-can-eat buffets I would like in my collection!

Sadly, I have nowhere near the kind of money needed for such a set.....

LITTLE SISTERS OF ELURIA Stephen King 1st HC LTD ARTIST'S ED SIGND BY WHELAN #19 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LITTLE-SISTERS-OF-ELURIA-Stephen-King-1st-HC-LTD-ARTISTS-ED-SIGND-BY-WHELAN-19-/322004156963?hash=item4af8f18223:g:6eAAAOSwG-1WutCu)

Interesting. Pure speculation in the interest of fun.....

- Rumor has it there was an unknown # of LSOE AE's with added, bonus drawings by Whelan (some have surfaced)
- #19 is very significant to both the story and the artist
- Book still in shrink

Could this one have an added drawing? Who knows. Auction Ended.

I think that numbering the books was the last step in the process before they were sent out.

i can more or less confirm that the books where numbered after the remarques where done.
I personally own one of the few suspicious once, and it did not even make it up to the process of numbering. It left Grant even un-numbered. For me thats a hint that it was somehow removed from the processing.

This is really interesting. I didn't know anything about it until I joined this site. It stinks. Surely there is some kind of control system in place to ensure some integrity? An un numbered one seems pretty sus doesn't it? Pretty much fraud isn't it? Advertising the opportunity and reneging? I would however, love to see the Remarque?

Perhaps King just took a book from inventory (boxes of Cujo from the publisher sitting in his office), personalized it and sent it off.
King has mentioned that he himself doesn't fret about something being a Trade 1st/1st. King likes signing a battered, well read copy as much as a brand new one (a 21st printing paperback means King has made even more money).

Perhaps. But other novels that King inscribed to Kirby have been first editions and dated a few days to weeks prior to the official publication date. I suspect Kirby was at the top of his list during that period of writing. To me that is what makes this later printing book very odd.

I donated the Revival Book to the Haven Fund Auction auction with a watercolor remarque. The book was a gift to me from a local King fan for some services I had rendered to the local group. It was a kind gift As I had read the story in audio, I thought rather than just putting it on a shelf, I would pass it on to the Haven Fund Charity. I know the trouble it is to get a signed book, and I would feel like a rat if I offered it for sale to cash in on a signed book that was gifted to me. So, the charity seemed a good deal all round. As I did have the book in my possesion, I decided to add the library embossing which adds a bit of authenticity to the provenance (and... I like squeezing the plier gizmo that makes the embossing.) My wife author, Janny Wurts, took a photo of me in a black frock to help me make the art for the remarque so the book is even a bit more personally remarqued. Some time ago, I twisted David Williamson's arm, of Bett's Books, to read Janny's standalone novel , "To Ride Hell's Chasm " as I thought it fit in somewhere between Roland, the Gunslinger character, and his setting for "Eyes of the Dragon" story and this is what he said- " …Finished Hell’s Chasm…OUTSTANDING book, it really grew on me as it went along and I thought Janny did a wonderful job with character development. I thoroughly enjoyed the story! " David purchases a few copies because he liked the book so much two with Janny's remarques. Some background on the book, Janny made a arrangements to do a US hard back edition of the book with her cover art, interior maps, chapter heads, and a tipped in color painting, with as small press publisher that went out of business. For book collectors, this hardcoverbook has a Library of Congress seal , has archival paper, is cloth covered and has sewn bindings. You can get the paperback from HarperCollins UK, but the small press who went bankrupt) edition is only available from my wife. I am going on about this a it is my one of favorite fantasy stories of all time. Contact her for more information <jannywurts@paravia.com>

I thought so too. The several other "signed" King books by allstar don't look desirable.

Confirming that the LSOE AE #19 DOES NOT contain an added Whelan drawing. For now anyway.......

Headed up to see Michael in April.

I don't know if there are completists here that pushes the limits of that vice to the limits, but what about foreign editions whose texts is in english?

We have a few in France, and another one was releases yesterday : THE GREEN MILE, text in english + notes to help french people understanding the text.
I think that I tend to ask Justin everytime that one is published if he lists them, and if I remember correctly, I think that he doesnt list those.
Anyway : THE GREEN MILE, by Harraps

You are probably going to be OK. But post some details and pictures and we will take a look.

There have been at least three occasions in the past year when hyraxia offered King books for sale that were forgeries. At least the consensual opinion of this board was that they were forgeries. We know that Simon reads these posts because he is an infrequent (but long time) poster here. He has yet to address our concerns.

And for those who think he might just be making an "honest mistake" I can assure you after knowing him for years on Ceri Vale's skfakes website with Ceri's self assembled panel of King signature experts that Simon knows damn well what is legit and what is not.

I now remember reading some earlier posts about this. To be honest, I never look at signed trade editions (his or anyone else's) so I guess that's why I never picked up on it. If you say some of these sigs are suspect I do not doubt that they are. But my business with him has always been very satisfactory and professional.

I don't know how many Finders Keepers proofs were done. I think #272 is about the largest number I've seen for this one.

There is no "average number" of proofs done. It varies widely between the publisher and the book itself. There were supposedly 200 copies of the UK Revival proof done while there were supposed to be 150 copies of the UK Doctor Sleep. The US publisher (Scribner) usually does not disclose the number done. According to my notes, about 10,000 copies of the US Rose Madder proof were done.

I should add that the Scribner proof of Cell is extremely scarce. At one time it was said that they did not even produce one, although I had one at the time. I know of about 4-5 in collectors' hands currently.

70 copies UK H&S version of 11/22/63 (w/o embargo)
200 of the other version or maybe it was 500 with embargo on it. John knows exact numbers on most all of them I bet!

Seems like UK versions are produced in lower numbers and attempts are made to minimize sharing them.

I don't have all the numbers, although I do have a number of the UK ones if they are numbered. (I show 400 of the 11.22.63 with the embargo on it. I don't know how accurate that is, though, because it's fairly scarce.)

Thanks for sharing both stories Don and for this Remarque as well as all your other efforts on behalf of The Haven Fund fundraising.

My wife also commented on "To Ride Hell's Chasm " stressing the wonderful character and story development which brought vivid visualizations.
Janny's art is also beautiful and when I have pointed out to bookstore owners that the author also did the art they all seem amazed and in awe of the fine depiction her illustrations provide.
