Not sure if a member did that, but it wasn't the wisest thing to do. It likely now will go for over $200. I should have just bought the thing when I saw it, but I was trying to share the wealth.

I looked at it as an opportunity to get a DJ-filler :) marrying a so-so book to a nice DJ makes me perfectly happy since the DJ is what I have to look at when the book is shelved. Sacrilegious, I know.

Obtaining this book would have been the first step in solving a two-piece puzzle.

Wouldnt it be suspicious that this seller is sort of the only guy that provides signed copies of this book??

I thought it very suspicious also. I have on occasion had Mr King ask me directly, "You're not getting this signed to sell, are you?".
The last time was in Toronto when I was getting one item signed (a Eyes of The Dragon proof).
I feel he is not keen on signing just for one to resell.
The fact that the seller states king signed several Mr Mercedes for him at one game seems very strange and out of character.

On the other hand; I do not find it unusual that one seller has multiple signed copies for sale since I have had the good fortune to walk into a bookstore shortly after Mr King signed a display full of books. Would you buy just one knowing of friends who also desire?

I have also gone to spring training games when I knew there was potential that Sai King would be there. Most times I went home without a King sighting however on the couple occasions I did catch him, there certainly was not time to get multiple copies signed and I would never consider carrying multiples of the same book knowing Kings dislike toward re-sellers.

IN REVIEWING THIS SELLERS MULTIPLE SALES OF THIS TITLE TO BE FAIR I HAVE TO SAY:
I can not spot any that I would say look like obvious fakes. The sigs do not look like copies of one another.
Each book sold has a signature placed a bit different on the page (like he was handed books while standing).
This guy is an obvious sig and sports collectible seller (they tend to go to events prepared often with buddies or minions in tow). They are very persistent to the point (I feel) of being obnoxious.
It was interesting to see one that sold had Mr Mercedes crossed out with Kings signature. Stephen sometimes crosses out his printed name when signing. This is another thing that could happen when he is standing and being handed books quickly to sign.
AT THIS POINT MY SUSPICION SUBSIDES...................... AND A STREAK OF ENVY RISES.
Looks to me like the signed Mr Mercedes he has offered so far could all be legit.

It depends. It will be difficult to find a separate 2nd state DJ. But in fact, 2nd state DJs can sometimes be found on later (presumably 2nd) printing books. These usually don't appear on collector's radars because we're not typically looking for later printings. My theory is (and I think Bob can confirm this) is that the 2nd print run of the book was already ordered before the 1st print run was released. The majority of the faulty DJs ended up on 1st printing books but a small portion got married to second printings. I assume the reverse is true for 3d state DJs - we know that it's really hard to find a 1st printing with a 3d state DJ but I suppose they are commonly found on 2nd printings (which, again, is what we typically ignore).

It will be a PITA to ask every seller of a non-first printing 'Salem's Lot about DJ specifics but you might get lucky. I purchased a later printing (gutter code Q41, which places it at four weeks after the first print run according to Jerome's gutter code theory) with a fantastic 2nd state DJ for $42. I married it to a DJ-less 1st printing book that I got for $100.

That was my first reaction as well, that maybe they were restored... but you never know, could have just been taken care of really well over the years.

Those all look like the real deal to me!

Too bad I'm in selling mode to come up w/ some $$$ for non-book related obligations. If I was in buying mode, I'd be interested. Although I think the minimum bid is at the very top end of the price range for these books.

Yeah the price is a bit too high I think

It looked high to me too, but when you divide it up, at the starting bid that's just $700 a book. Isn't that a goodish deal, with one signature to boot? Even at the BIN it's around $900 each.

Divemaster is spot on.

The price of these 5 doubleday books is priced about right, in my opinion. I have no problem with what the seller has advertised for sale, and I would recommend them to anyone who was "comfortably" able to afford them.

Seller says "never been opened" and can not verify the number.

It could be a PC, or have pages stuck together, or have missing pages. (Don't laugh--all these have happened to me on various books). Hell, it might be a box filled with potatoes! I just can't see shelling out big bucks not knowing what you'll really get.

I don't think the PC copies were originally shrink-wrapped. Peter Schneider had most of those and sold them through Stu Tinker at Betts. I'm nearly certain they weren't shrinkwrapped.

This is what the seller told me. Does this match how others bought this?

"My sister and I each bought one of these back when they were 1st released. I just called her to ask what publisher released it, and she can't recall either. It was only offered by one company if I am correct, and I seem to remember our names having to be picked to be able to purchase it. Please forgive my memory. When my sister sold hers she thought that it was shrinkwrapped, but the buyer corrected her saying it's saran wrap.
I remember taking it out of the box, and this is exactly how it was sent. I never unravelled the wrapping, because I also thought it was shrinkwrapped and I wanted to keep it pristine. Thanks for your inquiry, I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have further questions."

I'd really like to take a swing at the Regulators but the boards opinion has got me leery.

Plus I blew all of my cash at Bett's already.

Like most, I'd LOVE to own the bullet ridden lettered copy, but I will most probably never be able to afford the price, so I have my eye set on a Moto-Kops toy box regular S/N LE.

What is average sales price and a "good price" for this book?

bdwyer19
08-09-2014, 11:57 AM
Average price is $900-1000. So that's where this auction seems so tempting. It's already been listed at $1000, and then at $800 with no interest.

Randall Flagg
08-09-2014, 11:58 AM
Depending on the price, you might be able to get a deal on this. I suppose if the box came with potatoes in it, one could dispute the deal based upon the description.
Anything more than ~$800-$900 seems too risky not knowing.

There is still the eBay return system. If it isn't as advertised then you can get a refund. ie. "Brand New", "Signed by King", etc..

The ad says the "case" is new, and the "book" is new. Any reasonable person would expect it to be the complete package. That being said, if the seller doesn't want to open it, that means they are already being odd/illogical, and unless the price is right, it could be a PITA process to dispute.
An ad may say no returns, but ebay policy on a misleading ad trumps any return policy a seller may state.

It is a good one. The checks in the PC copies of the numbered edition repeated most of the check recipients in the lettered edition.

The best one in my collection is a numbered edition with the check made out to Randall Flagg in the amount of $10,000 for a "tithe."

As mentioned (btw this book was up for auction previously), it's a Caveat emptor. The buyer has to hope they get a good price. Upon receipt the "thing" should be perfect, but if not, it could be a dispute.

I once saw this painting in person at John McLaughlin's store in Los Angeles (or some suburb of LA) around 1998 or so. His store was called The Book Sail and it was a wonder to walk through and look at the treasures he had for sale but, towards the end, the store was in disarray. At least it looked that way to me. Stacks of original Carl Barks artwork laying on the floor, priceless (well that's not quite true, everything had a price) books laying haphazardly on shelves. The Firestarter painting was on the floor propped up against a wall in a dark corner of the store. It really didn't look like much without proper lighting but I knew exactly what it was and what it would look like with directional or track lighting. No glass over the artwork and I was concerned that something might inadvertently rub up against it. Maybe it did, I don't know. I wondered whatever happened to it.

I am not going to bid on it. I wonder if David will? For some reason I thought McLaughlin was asking $20,000 for it but I don't know if he told me that or if I just guessed at the price. My gut tells me it might reach $35,000 or so at Heritage. But I could be off by a mile either high or low. Anyone else with thoughts on the selling price?

Bob,

Your instinct is accurate. Here are some previous Heritage Auction results for Whelan originals:

2008: Fighting Man of Mars 1979 21" x 27" acrylic on board $17,000
2010: Gate Of Ivrel 1976 18" x 17" acrylic on board $4000
2010: Dragon Token 1991 28.5" x 18.5" acrylic on board $3500
2012: Martian Chronicles 1990 26" x 47" acrylic on masonite $30,000

The Firestarter artwork is 24" x 32" acrylic on board and, like the Bradbury cover, will likely generate a premium price. If two motivated bidders square off it could go over $40,000!

I think that is right. Perhaps his heirs are slowly disposing of his estate. It makes me hopeful that one day the elusive Carrie proof that he supposedly had will surface. Stu Schiff was involved in selling estate items early on after John's death. He said he looked and looked but could never find it.

No, it is not the ARC. It would be one of the "tall" Doubleday proofs. I've never seen even a picture of a Carrie proof but I am pretty sure some were made. Stu Schiff is certain that McLaughlin had one that he (Stu) said was in pretty rough condition. But it didn't turn up when Stu was going through McLaughlin's collection after his death. There is a collector in Ireland who has (or once had) a set of the five Doubleday proofs.

This is in Barry R. Levin's Biblionotes:

KING, STEPHEN. CARRIE.
James Strand has made a major bibliographic discovery concerning the nature of the true first edition of Stephen King's first book, CARRIE. It has long been known that the true first edition of CARRIE was the "Special Edition" in wrappers published by Doubleday as an advance readers copy to promote the sale of the first book by a then-unknown author by the name of Stephen King. Mr. Strand has discovered that there are two separate printings of this advance "Special Edition." One is marked with the code "O50" in the gutter margin of page 199, with the book itself measuring 5 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches. The other printing has the code "P6" in the gutter margin of page 199, with the book measuring 5 ½ x 8 ¼ inches. The text is positioned a little differently on the back cover, and the covers are of a somewhat different paper stock but otherwise the two printings look very much alike. If Doubleday had not broken their own rule at that time concerning the use of code numbers, the "O50" copies are the true first edition, first printing, followed by the later "P6" printing. "P6" is the code used in the first trade hardcover edition published by Doubleday.

Every copy of the ARC I've seen has the "O50" in the gutter; I wonder if this is the fabled "proof". I think the one Carlos is referencing, however, is one of the "oblong" proofs such as Doubleday did for the other early King books. I've never seen one of those for Carrie.

I've heard of those P6 copies too but I have never seen one. Peter Schneider told me he found a "boxful" of them when Doubleday was moving their offices in 1987. I've always doubted that. Not that the P6 copies exist but that Peter found a "boxful." Knowing Peter they would have been quickly sold to collectors through Betts and would now be in the hands of collectors. I don't think that happened.

No. It is different. The O50 and P6 things are not proofs at all. They are ARC's and state "Special Edition Not For Sale" on the rear cover. According to our Doubleday gutter theory these would have been printed in the 50th week of 1973 (O50) and the 6th week of 1974 (P6).

Here are a couple of letters from the Doubleday King file where bound galleys (often called Cape Cods because that is where most were printed) were being discussed back in March and May of 1973. Well before the ARC's were printed.

VERY interesting Bob!
Do you happen to know if Steve wrote the text on the flap, as suggested?

I have been told by the french publisher when they went through the archives for one of my articles, that they bought the rights of the book prior to its US release, based on the manuscript. They apparently signed the contract later, on october 3rd, of 1973... and then recieved the final text in july of 1974.

I wonder what was that manuscript : unbound pages? Definitely not one of those proofs if printed in 50th week of 1973...

Every copy of the ARC I've seen has the "O50" in the gutter; I wonder if this is the fabled "proof". I think the one Carlos is referencing, however, is one of the "oblong" proofs such as Doubleday did for the other early King books. I've never seen one of those for Carrie.

I'll have to check my copy for O50 when I get home tonight.

Hoo boy.. this should be interesting...

'Interesting' is the understatement of the year! All the proofs he mentions are almost-one-of-a-kinds and will not be seen for sale anymore for a loooong time...if ever. This will be the first time any of us here sees any pics of a NEL 'Salem's Lot proof.

Those proofs are at the very top of my wish list but I know I will never own them...

Having recently consolidated my entire King collection from Japan, Thailand, England and Ireland here into the U.S. I am now in the process of selling off many items I have in duplicate and triplicate. More rare items will follow as soon as my eBay Selling Limit is raised (this is my first time selling on eBay). These will include several copies of the Asbestos Lettered “Firestarter”, all the early Doubleday Proofs (except Carrie as I only have one), signed NEL Proofs of “Salem’s Lot” and “The Stand” (“Carrie”,” Night Shift” and “The Shining” are not owned in duplicate), and Michael Alpert's personal copies of "Six Stories", "The New Lieutenant's Rap", and "The Plant", in a custom designed tray-case.

Bob, I'm guessing this is the collector from Ireland you had mentioned who has a Carrie proof? We were discussing it here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?226-Intriguing-Stephen-King-King-Related-Dark-Tower-Auctions-Sales&p=869163&viewfull=1#post869163).

Yes. That is him. He has a fantastic collection.

He also said that he's going to be selling SEVERAL copies of the asbestos lettered Firestarter. Wow!

I personally would prefer. But simply because I wont be buying anything, and I would love to see pictures of what he had.
But yes, he may sell some items outside of ebay. Probably had already been contacted a few times already.

I have just not had the best of luck with it. I am in Canada as well and now Ebay has stated the Global Shipping Program which is bullshit and is based on the price of the item. They will RAPE me with a uber high percentage of the value I pay for any book. I stopped buying off Ebay almost a year ago. Unless I steal it price wise.. not worth it. For instance. I won a King book for the going rate back when they started it and I stopped... I called to complain cause the cost to bring it is was 59% of what i was paying for the book. I just cancelled the transaction. It is a rip off and another way to make money. If your living in the US... your very lucky to get the rates you do for shipping and not have to pay ridiculous costs to bring it across the border. I have a system worked out now for myself that helps but still sucks... oh.. and (doesnt matter how I buy it) the cost to pay in my dollar is higher as well. I get about $89 bucks US for a $100CAD. It adds up when I am forking over large sums. It has gotten better (that was yesterday's rates) since the beginning of the year but still not perfect. Even when our dollar was higher than yours a year or so ago it still cost me to buy US.

Just ask the seller to ship it another way. Some will. It still isn't cheap to ship it internationally though. Also the seller has to include a customs declaration.

There are some people who like the eBay system so I offer it. I always include Priority Mail International as an option too. That way the customer can circumvent the eBay system if they prefer.

Your totally right Brian, the shipper can remove it but by the jeepers it is some hard to convince them to do it. They automatically think I am up to something and you know what? David a@ Bett's has been amazing in every sense in the word helping get where I am today. Also the people here offering killer deals every once in awhile have been a real asset as well. (If RF had a BIG hug icon it would have been used... HERE. haha)

:grouphug:

It could be a pain for a seller that doesn't know how to do it. They also might have to wait longer for PayPal to release their money. Like I mentioned before they also have to include a customs declaration which is extra work. It isn't nearly as hard if they would set it up properly to begin with.

Would there be a savings to have items shipped domestically and then reshipped to you? I would be willing to do that for you or perhaps someone up north could.

Thanks a mil man. All to kind of you but David at Bett's will do that for me and if the right price comes along (I find them few and far between what David gets me for pricing) I would do just that. Ralph Mullins has offered many a time too. Great people adn does not go unnoticed! Pos reg points for the offer though!

Are you really going for it Dan?

Im in the market for one of these too (prolly have to mortgage a kidney to get it though)

I want one of these o so bad, but am not worthy (chops-wise) LOL

That doesnt mean i will not buy one someday :D

Probably not. If it goes for around $3500 I think my wife would kill me. I have a Taylor guitar, so it's hard to justify this one. I say go for it.
