Re: the discussion about UK 1sts - copies of Carrie do come up for sale every now and then but you have to be lucky to find one for a reasonable price. I purchased my previous copy (NF condition) for £800 if I'm not mistaken (original BIN or starting price was £1000). I used a photo of that copy for the UK trade edition entry in the catalog. I sold it to a member here when I moved my complete set of UK 1sts.

After my latest round of selling stuff :) I decided to keep a small core collection of UK 1sts. I got a great opportunity to get Carrie, The Shining, The Stand and The Dead Zone in a single buy (see the Pride and Joy thread). I still had copies of 'Salems Lot and Night Shift.

Very cool info. Thanks Tippy! So I assume they just had the Desperation bookplates for him to sign - not a twin Regulators one as well?

I am not aware of any Regulators bookplates from that event.

On a related topic, I received THIS (http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-REGULATORS-NEW-SIGNED-by-STEPHEN-KING-HARD-COVER-1st-ED-Richard-Bachman-/301147412690?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=rFzUu0nLSnWAeNdP8D4QfcSISWE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc) today.

The seller was in Maine....which is where the signing discussed above took place......so I am wondering if this might be the "sister" book to the bookplate-Desperation, and signed at the same event?
LOOKS GOOD and Priced right.. Good purchase Rick.

There's a Gift Edition of INSOMNIA on eBay, offered by CD, going for $225...can't figure it out.

...nor the signed 1st trade (not the S/L) of Joe Hill's HORNS for what is now bid @ $109.50.

How CD is getting these insane bids is beyond me.

That said, if I ever decide to consign my collection for auction, CD's now #1 on my speed-dial.

I don't understand it either.

Turns out someone must be playing with them...that Gift Edition of INSOMNIA is now up to $2,247.

I copied and saved the following regarding identifying the Dead Zone first edition vs. the Book Club edition back in September 2006. I WISH I had noted from where and whom I copied it. My sincerest apologies to whomever first penned this!

Viking moved in the early 80's. Not sure exactly when, but it was between the publishing of Different Seasons and Christine, so either 1982 or 1983. The earlier address was 625 Madison Avenue, they moved to 40 West 23rd Street (both in N.Y). This is of crucial importance because most of the books published around that date are fairly hard to identify as firsts.

So how do you identify, say, a first edition of The Dead Zone? We'll look at the book and the DJ separately. First, the book. First Published in 1979 by The Viking Press is useless, they all say it. Absence of a number line? Usefull in differentiating between a 1st printing and a later printing, but useless in differentiating between a BCE and a 1st printing, because neither has number lines. What about size, you say. Some King BCE's are virtually the exact same size as the 1st editions. (The Dead Zone is one of these, It is another, not sure about others but unless you know for SURE that they NEVER made a BCE that size (and how can you really be sure?), then size wont help either (not all the time anyway). What's left? Quarter bound in black cloth with black boards? They're all like that. So now what's left? According to all the FAQ's I've seen, nothing. So there is NO surefire way to identify The Dead Zone as a first edition.

So basically people are identifying the dust jacket, not the book itself. Well, that's fine, right? If you've got a first edition DJ then it must be a first edition book, why the hell would someone put a first edition DJ on a book club? Where'd the first edition book go? DJ's almost always show wear before the book itself, so if you've got a real nice 1st edition DJ it'd be silly to think it contained a BCE book, right? The other way might happen, a First edition book with a shredded or absent DJ might have a BCE DJ, but you'd avoid that anyway assuming the book was also BCE.

Here's the problem. Later printing DJ's are, in at least some cases, identical to first edition DJ's. Christine is one of em, I own a 1st edition and a 3rd edition and the DJ's are completely identical. Date code is the same, price is the same, ISBN is the same, they're completely identical. The Dead Zone is the same way, at least up to the 6th printing (IIRC). So if you can't tell the difference between a 1st printing DJ and a 5th printing DJ, and you can't tell the difference between a BCE book and first edition book, then couldn't your "verified" first edition be a BCE with a later printing DJ? It sure as hell could, and I've seen several copies of the The Dead Zone in just such a manner sell for 75 dollars and up on eBay (as much as a real first edition, in other words. It's not like seeing a BCE Carrie sell for 75 dollars).

So here's where the little tidbit about Viking moving comes in. All the book clubs I've seen that are the correct size were printed AFTER 1983. The Dead Zone was, of course, printed in 1979. Which means the addresses should be different, and they are. The BCE's have the 40 West 23rd Street address, the real Firsts have the 625 Madison Avenue address. The nice thing here is that Viking printed the address on the CP AND the DJ. The later printings were still at 625 Madison, so when you see a BCE with a later printing DJ, not only is the address on the CP wrong, but the address on the CP and the DJ don't match.

Now, this doesn't mean that there couldn't be some BCE's out there that are the correct size printed before 1983. In which case I don't know what to tell ya.

John

Heh, I was just looking at Dead Zone's, and googled trying to find this particular post, so thanks for saving it.

Apology accepted. :) I made it, on one of the previous incarnations of TDT. As far as I know it's still true. Except maybe the quarter bound/black thing, probably not ALL like that, though mostly. I've seen lots of BCE Dead Zones with the 625 address, but they're all short (8.5"), and I've seen lots of BCE Dead Zones that are the right height (9.5"), but they all have the wrong address. As I said though, that isn't necessarily always true, could be old BCEs that are the right height and I've just never seen one.

I remember at the time getting frustrated because there were a LOT of books on eBay that were misrepresented because of this. E.g. later BCEs with a first edition DJ where they'd show a pic of the address on the DJ but not the CP, early BCs without DJs marketed as 1st/1sts, etc.

Damn! I finally see a signed/inscribed King that says "For John" (my real name - I've been looking for a "for John" or even a "for Jonah" for awhile) and it's "Christine", I already own a signed US and UK edition of this (made out to other people) so I can't buy a third. Ironic because I just bought a UK signed to a different name earlier today - wish I had seen this one first. So here it is if anyone else wants it...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Horror-Author-STEPHEN-KING-signed-CHRISTINE-1983-Hard-Cover-Book-/141270207497

I THINK the sig is genuine (pic is a bit blurry) but might want to double check it with others here if you plan to buy it. I'm not 100 percent sure if it is genuine, it looks a little "loopy" and the photo is blurry...

I don't think the signature is legit. It's also dated almost a month before the supposed publication date (end of April 1983).

I just checked my 2 signed books from him around that time, and the sig does look more like his later sigs (90's or so) than 80's so you're prob right that it's not genuine, sorry I should have posted it in the ebay BS thread.

Meanwhile, some very cool rare promo items from this seller here on ebay I just found, including Rose Madder mask (wasn't someone here looking for one of these recently?) and Misery signet rare promo, etc. No international postage indicated so I'll have to message him, but if anyone wants to grab something by him, here's the list... Very cool items, love that Rose Madder mask.

John... Jonah... You did fine passing on it as it is a bad attempt at a sig.

What names did you wind up with?

It is hard to tell from a picture. It doesn't look "beat up" necessarily.

There appears to be a little rubbing on the edge. There might be a little lacquer flaking to the left of the "J". There also appears to be a small dimple near the latch. Perhaps that is "beat up." I can't be sure though. I would definitely ask the seller about it.

Those prices are probably closer to the 18 month mark. I haven't seen one that low since Matheson passed away. The "chapbook" that looks like it comes with it is probably the card that has the graphic from the cover of the book. It was included with the S/L. It is just what you see, a single piece of card stock with the graphic on it.

Thanks Niels! That link worked...after some work. It was probably just my ineptitude but Google translate wouldn't translate the fill in your info check out pages so I had to translate line for line. Got it done though. It was the hardest I've had to work for a book in a while. I was trying to order from the publisher itself and they only had options for Denmark and The Netherlands. The total with shipping came to 47,30 Euro or $65.57 USD. Thanks again to all for the tip and the help.

[edit] Since I ordered one from Denmark, on Monday we'll probably get the "Cemetery Dance is getting a hand full of copies." email. That's the way it seems to go for me.

The hardcover and paperback are normally released at the same time.
It can happen that they're released a few days days later, because they are all hand-numbered.

It's probably fine since it's already here, other's will see it and opine on the sig. For future reference, use the eBay BS thread:

I would say if someone got that for $800... they got a GREAT deal. The Gunslinger looks in pretty good shape, that being the most important part of the $800...

Ambiguous information. It can't be a second edition and be #287 (although that could be their item #), and no pic of the inside (non-King) inscription.
Still, $19.99 start:
The Dark Tower The Gunslinger by Stephen King. #287 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Dark-Tower-The-Gunslinger-by-Stephen-King-287-/301175443966?pt=US_Fiction_Books&hash=item461f7491fe)

I wrote and asked about it. This is the response:

"Hello:

Thank you for your comment. The # 287 notation is for our internal tracking, we use such a notation for all of our listings.

That said, your point is very well taken, it CAN be misleading. I will make a point of mentioning it to the supervisors.

Thank you again.

I contacted the seller, and he said he couldn't tell what color the boards were. He also said that an appraiser told him the book was worth $800 to thousands (I.e., who wouldn't tell me his price), he won't take the plastic off, and won't ship.

All that being said, the pictures are pretty sweet.

Robert,

I ended up purchasing that book from the gentleman from Houston. He was a very, very nice guy, and the boards are definitely black. I had printed out some recently ended ebay listings and was prepared to offer him $700 if it was a first ed. Alas, it had black boards. (Thank Mr. Randall Flagg for pointing out the difference between the two (I sometimes feel like such a newb). I didn't really need a 2nd edition but thought I would go ahead and lighten his load for him (he was carrying it in a bag of sorts).

The seller had 2 auctions. The other auction started at $400 with a ~$675 BIN.
I think $400 is a good deal. $675 is a bit high.
I almost bought it myself, but I really try to resist the urge to BIN on most items so that people want to come to this thread, and are pleased when a little "nugget" shows up.

I had the fortune of meeting (some might say pestering) Mr. Whelan at last years Spectrum Live 2 Illustrator show/convention last year in Kansas City. He and Audry were very very nice and answered tons of questions and signed lots of DT books and prints. He was even kind enough to doodle a dragon in my wife's copy of Legends on Anne McCaffrey's story's page.

Anyway, he had original art for sale there. Most of it was not DT related but the painting he did for Legends (forget the name) was there for something like $95,000 and he had a few small pieces 5x8 for maybe $800-$1,500. He also had A Memory of Light, the cover art to Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson's last book in the Wheel of Time series. AMAZING to see in person. A M A Z I N G.

I'm guessing that you're looking for DT/SK art and this isn't it but he does have some original art for sale on his website. http://www.michaelwhelan.com/shop/original-art/

I had talked to them about doing a remarque in the Legends and he asked me a little about it and since it's signed by most of the authors and artists (a few who have now passed) and Tom Doherty even, he was uncomfortable with handling something with such sentimental value to us. His wife Audry added that he doesn't have much time to do things like remarques. I got the impression that he wasn't necessarily unwilling, it is just that he'd rather use his time with something else - also, it would most likely be out of my budget. (Thusly, I talked him into a quick doodle)

Doubt this helps you but I hope it does.

I don't think that is an accurate description. I think it is similar to the COTW S/L's marked "Artist's Copy" or "Publisher's Copy" (each with a limitation of eight). These are labelled as "Custom Bound Edition" and numbered 1 through 5. I think that the publisher, Christopher Zavisa, must have planned to bind these five text blocks in a different, probably more deluxe type of binding. But, obviously, never got around to it. I think it was intended to be a separate state of the book.

Anyway, he had original art for sale there. Most of it was not DT related but the painting he did for Legends (forget the name) was there for something like $95,000

I have always wondered about the Legends painting. Would love to own it but had the feeling that Audrey would never let Michael sell it. I think she feels the same way about The Crimson King. Not sure who could afford to buy it at $95K but I would love to be able to see it in person. At $95K it sounds like Audrey still would rather keep it than sell it. JMO.

I contacted Michael out of the blue for the first time in 1996. Just sent an e-mail to him that I got from his website. I asked if any artwork from The Gunslinger was still unsold. I got a reply a couple of weeks later that he thought he still had some but would have to search for them in a warehouse. About a month later he contacted me again saying that had he found three of them. He had prices for them and, after much deliberation, I decided to buy them. I can tell you that the prices were much, much less than his original paintings sell for today. I see these paintings every day and still consider myself so lucky to have been the first guy to ask about them and be in position to buy them when they were offered. Michael said he does not know who owns the other two paintings from The Gunslinger.

Interestingly, Michael told me he offered to sell all five paintings from The Gunslinger to King after the book was published. King said that they were nice but he couldn't afford them. Michael thought that was strange since King had just signed a large contract for a few million dollars for his next three books (or something like that). Anyway, that story just makes me feel luckier still.

I've seen them hanging in your basement - in your thread. I'm glad they haven't faded into the background of the room and became "normal". Michael's work is breathtaking in person. I'd love to see more originals, everyday, in my basement. Alas, I'll have to settle for my $195 poster, er print. :)

Although it's NOT a nice copy as Bob's has. Signed by Stephen King as "Etienne Roi" (a french "translation" of King's name).

Well, I offered to trade my copy to you for a UK proof a while back and was surprised that you declined to trade. I thought you would accept the trade eagerly. I was surprised when you turned me down.

There actually was a similar situation with a HF auction that VFB hosted on our behalf. A set of "red Leather" King books that went for over $500. The internet, and customer lists are wildly unpredictable.

There's an interesting site called "The Illustration Exchange" on MunchkinPress.com, where people show off their art collections. Robert Wiener's collection is there, and it's pretty sweet.

Anywho..., here is a link to the Endpaper, apparently owned by someone named Dean Lorey: LINK (http://www.munchkinpress.com/cpg149/displayimage.php?album=19&pos=17); on the site, it seems like the painting is refered to as both "The Way Station" and "The Fence".

Easton Press sells all its books with a loose bookplate sticker amongst the paperwork (invoice, flyers, etc.). Some people actually stick them into their books, immediately reducing the value substantially.

My personal opinion the auction you linked is that their edition of DEAD ZONE is not all that hard to come by and the price is not exorbitant, so I wouldn't pay more than about $20 for this particular copy because of the damn sticker. I say $20 only because it would make a very nice reading copy or gift for someone who is not a collector.

These are not really signed limited in my opinion...which is why I recently sold my copy.

www.flatsigned.com got over 126 of these signed paperbacks and ripped the cover off and put a new leather cover on.

That would be like me taking a signed hardcover of Doctor Sleep, ripping off the cover, putting a new one on, and calling it a S/L.

The Lettered CARRIE is not worth the price of a Lettered CARRIE.

Here was the response to the question I was asked about the aftermarket price of the Lettered Carrie. The ACTUAL list price was not known at this point.

List price $2000 - aftermarket price - $4,000
List price $3000 - aftermarket price - $4,000
List price $4000 - aftermarket price - $4,000

Now I know the ACTUAL list price, I stick to my original guess at $4000 aftermarket price. (After the initial stupidity rush that all new S/Ls go through).
