Richard Christian Matheson has a traycased lettered “PC” copy of DYSTOPIA he is interested in selling (the book is long sold out).
FYI: A PC lettered edition sold last month on eBay for $635.

I wonder if this PC version comes with all the extras that the proper Lettered edition has?

I would assume so. I can't afford this right now otherwise I'd email them and ask.

Anyone looking for a MOTH?
This was just sent to me - a litttle too deep for my pockets at the moment, but perhaps someone here might give it a home. I can send the contact info to anyone interested:

Signed, with Moth Contributors, and with note by the editor

King, Stephen. Moth. Orono, Maine: The Blanket Conspiracy, 1970. First edition. Stiff paper wrappers. Unpaginated. Author's first book appearance. The first appearance in book form of three poems by Stephen King, predating any commercial printing of his work. Moth was an anthology which evolved out of a poetry seminar at the University of Maine, where King was a student at the time. Other contributers include Tabitha Spruce, who not long after married Stephen to become Tabitha King. (In his autobiographical book, On Writing, King writes of falling in love with Tabitha during this poetry workshop-he also describes the workshop at some length in the book.) Another contributor was Michael Alpert, who later worked with King as co-founder of Philtrum Press, where he designed and composed the type for the ultra rare publication The Plant, and the limited editions of The Eyes of the Dragon, and Six Stories. The most important poem by King in Moth is the first: "The Dark Man," the genesis of his sprawling epic, The Dark Tower The second poem is titled "Donovan's Brain," inspired by the book and movie of the same name. King did other poems and stories for literary magazines before he was published commercially but this anthology represents the most important work of this form by King, as well as being the confluence for people of significance to King's life and work.

Signed by “Steve King,” Tabitha Spruce, Michael Alpert and 11 of the 12 contributors.

The signatures are on the verso of the front cover, including the two editors, Bruce Holsapple and George MacCleod, who also contributed to the anthology, and Diane McPherson, who drew the cover illustration as well as contributing a poem. This must have been signed soon after publication, before the contributors dispersed from the University of Maine campus. It's undoubtedly a very early copy as King signs his name “Steve” and Tabitha is still a Spruce. I've had Moth's with a few signatures in the past; I've never had a copy with nearly all the contributors signatures.

Pinhole indentation on front cover; some moderate soiling on the back cover, 3 small stains and a crease on the title page, light staining to the fore-edge else Very Good. $1,500 postpaid/insured

Also laid in to this copy - A typed note, signed, from Bruce Holsapple, one of the editors, to the publisher of another journal, asking to trade publications: "I honestly can't afford a single one." The publisher returned Holsapple's note, with a handwritten note agreeing to the trade. If, as is likely, Holsapple was trading Moth for another journal, that would have been a fine trade on one end.

*A contributor by the name of David Lyon did not sign this copy. J.J. Bishop, who wrote the introduction but did not contribute any poetry, also did not sign.

OK - i thought these were a little rarer than that. No worries, I'm happy with the purchase anyhoo. Is there any info on this site on these volumes?

It seems the market is rising for these. This set is going for more than you paid (It does have the extra book.) It looks like the condition might be worse than yours too. F&SF Magazine - The Gunslinger (http://www.ebay.com/itm/370979564293?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648)

Strange... This copy of Misery is for sale via Very Fine Books for $750. Meanwhile, Betts just sold a copy with the exact same inscription (To Pat and Carmen) for $225. Assuming it is the same copy, does VFBooks really think they can sell this for that much?

Has anybody ever SOLD to Very Fine Books?

Their prices are ridiculous, but they're fairly local to me, so might be a good selling option...I wonder if they actually have as much inventory as it seems, or are just consigners? Those prices are often absurd.

I did sell them a few books 6-7 years ago, but I don't know that he was in business at the time, or more of a collector.

I did sell them a few books 6-7 years ago, but I don't know that he was in business at the time, or more of a collector.

I'd like to give a different perspective on VFB, one given to me by the Anonymous collector whose books I presented in a recent collection thread. Like most of the comments above, I also felt VFB's prices were a little OTT, however I have in the past made a purchase from them. (more on this later).

When Anonymous told me that most of his purchases were through VFB, I expressed suprise and commented on the prices. He told me that he had a very good relationship with Emmanuel (VFB proprietor) and that he purchased from him for the following reasons:
1. He is considered a favoured customer and is always given 'discount' pricing
2. The books he is sold are always of the finest quality
3. For the level of service he gets. Often Emmanuel will search for books on his behalf, acting as a proper dealer rather than just a bookstore. Anything he is not happy with can be returned without question

I think Emmanuel specialises in this type of customer, one who expects a very high level of service and is willing to pay extra for it.

With regards to my own purchase from VFB, I bough a signed copy of Misery during their recent sale (NOTE not the one in the ebay sale mentioned above). It was priced higher than the market value, but the sale included a number of other books including a gift edition of From A Buick 8 which I felt as a package justified the single book price. As some of you may be aware from other postings I have made, there was an issue with the book not being a 1st/1st as described (there were NO issues with the Sig). I contacted Emmanuel and not only did he refund the price of the book (including shipping) he also paid for the book to be shipped back and allowed me to keep the additional volumes. I doubt many dealers would offer this level of customer service.

As with all things in life, you pays your money and takes your choice...

I have....over the years I would say I have sold him at least 20 books.

I won't comment on his prices...those are his business, but I will say he is very professional, and detail oriented.

He wants the best, which, since his company name is VFB, that make sense.

That's a good perspective.

Actually, I forget sometimes that - yes, these books ARE expensive, and if you want a guaranteed sale, and a high-quality product, and buyer protection, then you pay for that privilege.

Like has been said, if you want a great "deal" then you buy on ebay, and hope the description is accurate.

So while his prices are at the high end (obviously), there's an upside for those willing to pay them. It's easy for me to judge the prices since I've been able to find books for much cheaper - but that took a fair amount of effort. I could have traded that effort/time and just bought from him!

Is $675 a good price for that Skeleton Crew if you were to win that bid?
Last one on ebay sold for $650. Another was sold below $789 (best offer accepted). Those were in October and November.

I paid $590 for one in December and felt like that was a very good price. If I didn't have that one I would be bidding on this one.

Ditto here for Tippy, no worries with him at all. As for Doctor Sleep or IT, there are more flatsigned Doctor Sleep's around than IT, but if condition is important to you then you may want to wait for one in Fine/Fine condition (and be ready to pay for it).

Might I ask what your collecting interests are? If you're just getting started and don't really have a specific thing in mind, I'd say see what catches your fancy but don't go overboard because you'll probably change your mind down the road. I started with proofs & arcs, moved into remarques, then got the S/L bug, and those go along with the trades and paperbacks. I think the one thing I don't have is flatsigned! I have a nice little well-rounded collection, but don't really pursue one single avenue ... if I really like something and can afford it, I get it. If I can't afford, guaranteed it will come up for sale again some time in the future.

Don't buy on impulse and don't go broke buying!

In all 100% I speak True honesty I want a flatsigned copy of The Gunslinger in hardback. I want that more than any other book of his, I know I can get his books as I find them but that 1 is what I LONG for

They come up every so often, but you're not going to find one for $275. Other than David at Betts and the folks here, your best bet might actually be getting a 1st/1st and then going to a King event to try and have him sign it ... you know then there's no doubt he signed it.

A clamshell is a type of case to store your book in. Also referred to as a tray case. It has a hinged lid. A "remarque" is a drawing in a book usually done by the artist who illustrated the edition. They can be very small "doodles" or flew fledged intricate pictures. We have a remarqued "Dr. Sleep up for auction for the Haven Fund raiser to give you an idea. Questions are more appropriate in this thread...

http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?1283-Collecting-Questions

But you arwe certainly not upsetting or offending anyone. Takes some time to get used to the site. Enjoy!!!

Note: His price includes shipping which is a definite plus and any of us who have bought from him know his packing is top notch.

That is true and I bought a book my copy of Insomnia actually that I paid well to me it was alot for and when I got it and looked at it Idon't know SK signature is done in actual ink. does that make sense? it IS signed by him and i think the artists that worked on it. it is a leather bound edition I will try to take pics of it this weekend. I will channel my questions to the right threads thanks for understanding yall

Could be the S/L, easy enough to tell if it has a number or letter or PC written in it. If it's an S/L the sig is authentic. Take a nice photo of the sig page and closeup photo of the sig and post it in the "Ebay BS Game:, Questionable Items, Signatures and Sellers" thread and the experts here that are in the know will tell you their opinion.

I have purchased off this seller before, and Paul is very up front with his descriptions, and I have always received very well packaged items. As you'll see, he notes a slight bump on the tray case, and so its not 100% fine, and yet I think the price is at the top end of the scale fo rthis edition. I think BP sold one via betts recently for $4500? (I could be wrong on that, best to check if possible). I guess the question comes down to how often these come up for sale, and how bad you want one.

That being said, I do know Paul, and would be happy to ask him if he would consider a lower buy now if you have a price in mind? send me a PM with a price you are thinking of if you want, and I'll email him for you...

I'm not sure how much interest these will have but they both contain pretty rare King magazine appearances.

The first is a group of New Republic magazines that contains the June 4, 1984 appearance of King's essay "Why I Am For Gary Hart." I looked for a long time for a copy for my collection. It might be worth the Buy It Now price of 20 bucks to take the whole lot just for the King appearance. For whatever reason I just don't see these come around that often.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/251438229195?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

The next is for the scarce April, 1979 issue of Nugget. Condition is not the best but someone might steal it for a buck. These are scarce too.

Do you think that signature is legitimate? Looks like Steven which would be wrong! Or it could be Steve in which case pretty cool, but I just don't know and the seller absolved himneslf of any legitimacy!

My gut feeling is that it is legitimate. The inscription writing looks right on. I think he is signing as "Steve" but there seems to be too many letters for that. That part confuses me but everything else, including the "King", look just fine.

Bangor Daily News, May 25, 1973. "Hampden Teacher Hits Jackpot with New Book" interview by David Bright. Reprinted in Feast Of Fear: Conversations with Stephen King, published in 1989 by Underwood-Miller.

If that's accurate. I've discovered that occasionally what the proof says is the first printing isn't what was really done. (The US proof of Eyes of the Dragon says a million-copy run. It was actually 750,000).

There's the amount the publisher states, which is often inflated but more often made public, and then the real number, which is much harder to come by (though it's almost always less than or equal to the stated number).

Opinion on the signature?
Looks kind of alright I think, except 2 things which I aint sure:
- a bit too much space just after the "ST" ?
- the line on the right side (?) For putting in name when he crossed his name? Which i think would show that it's likely to be a real signature
NB : another thing that makes me think it's real, is that he also added for sale the 1st french edition for King's first books...

I just paid 0.99p for this set :) It wasn't clear whether it was the UK or the US edition (i'm hoping for UK, I already have the US ULC) but a steal either way.

I agree with John. The UK version has black on the cover instead of white, and the picture is also slightly different. Check Bruce's (Needfulthings) collection thread for a side-by-side comparison pic - I just sold him my UK copy a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, the auction originally mentioned is definitely the US version. My comment was regarding a set (of 10) that I purchased a couple of days ago. It did not show covers only spines, so I don't know if its UK or US.

Indeed.

The fount of knowledge being based upon a flow of knowledge such as a fountain. The font of knowledge is based upon a baptismal font. Being a vessel containing a substance which imparts a knowledge of sorts.

I chose the image of Bev being a repository of knowledge. His knowledge also flows forth as a fountain so either works.

Not even close...for me. Others might not think the same. I know there are collectors who value PC copies. To me, they are essentially without worth, b/c if I had one I'd constantly be thinking of replacing it with a real numbered copy.

Whenever you ask the question "what is a book worth?" there is never just one set answer. It's worth what someone would pay for it, and that can be all over the map. Sure, you can get a consensus from looking at recent sales/auctions, but still...I've seen books go for much higher (or lower) than the "going rate." Hell, I've knowingly overpaid a few times for something I just really wanted and didn't want to wait.

A "Presentation Copy" may well be worth more. ie. Author's copy, Artist's copy, etc., especially with point of issue, signature, inscription or provenance.

A "Publisher's Copy" is generally, though not always, less expensive.

I bought 2 items from RoughRadio (Long Walk and Roadwork) in 2 separate transactions. Both books were exactly as described. YMMV...

If anyone is interested, let me know. I can bid for you if you like, as he may not be happy to ship overseas. He has listed it with no BIN, but this is the second time it has been up for sale, so good chance you'd get it for that price.
