How much do you think the sticker residue (on Moth) will affect the sale. I haven't made many "BIG" SK purchases and had considered going after this. At this price point (what I'm anticipating this to go for) I don't think I would be happy with the residue.

Feel free to move this to another thread if needed.

I know that a few very nice copies changed hands in the past but generally speaking I don't think this copy is in very bad shape. Mine has some staining, looks pretty decent but would never be qualified as a 'nice' copy. But I'm pretty easygoing when it comes to the condition of proofs and magazine-style publications, especially when they're scarce like this one. I'd rather have an imperfect copy than no copy at all (but I'm sort of a completist when it comes to this kind of stuff).

I guess what I'm trying to say is: the residue will affect the value but (IMO) it's still a pretty cool item to own. Did you have a max bid in mind?

I agree. The residue will affect the price somewhat, but it's still one of the scarcer King items. If you can get it at a decent price, I don't think you'll be unhappy.

I think that sticker residue might be easily removable. Turn a hair dryer on low heat and heat up the residue. It will usually just peel off once the adhesive heats up. There are other tricks to try but I'll bet that would work.

It is indeed. Makes one wonder if some of the later sigs that are discounted as forgeries in the other thread here may in fact be authentic. I'm guessing most sigs that are labeled as suspect are not good, but it does give one pause to wonder if there's more variance to his sig now than we give credit for.

I am no expert, but i would say that the maximum it would go for, would be $300. And even then it would seem very unlikely to me... It's not like it something PRIOR to the publication of CARRIE or a letter that is particularly... exiting.

I think it is priced quite a bit too high. Signed letters by Stephen King can be worth a lot more than that if they have significant content (i.e. discussing writing, thoughts or plans for future novels, pertinent details on publishing, etc.). This letter seems pretty mundane &/or boring. I wouldn't pay all that much for it.

I'm not too familiar with Heritage Auctions. Are they legit? The main reason I ask is that some of the signed 1/1s the have do not show any pictures of the signature.

I personally only ever purchased original art, and golden age comics from them. I got an alert based on Wrightson, and noticed a few books offered. They are a really big auction house, and they do back up what they sell.

I remember flack over some sports autographs, and this was their response.

"First, and most importantly, every autograph sold by Heritage is authenticated by PSA/DNA, James Spence, or both.

We cannot stress this enough. Due to the logistics of running constant auctions that begin and end every week, occasionally we must list material prior to its evaluation by PSA/DNA, who examines our Sunday Internet Sports Auctions (SISA). While this is admittedly not ideal, it is important to understand that no auction reaches its conclusion without that evaluation. Lots are pulled prior to the end of the four-week bidding process if they are deemed not authentic or questionable. Never will an autographed lot in a Heritage auction close prior to examination. We do understand it can be frustrating to bid on a lot only to have the auction end prior to the conclusion, but we would all agree that this is preferable to selling material that is not genuine. We would also suggest that ideally those who feel they have spotted a problematic item in a Heritage auction would bring it to our attention directly via email to Sports@HA.com, which would be the most effective course of action to ensure speedy removal of such items from auction. The entire hobby is improved when mudslinging is replaced by goodwill and a helpful intent.

Thank you,

Heritage is as legit as any entity can possibly be. They are very reputable and have no reason to knowingly sell fraudulent material. That's not to say they can't occasionally make mistakes but I think you can trust them.

My problem is with the certification services. I have seen King signatures deemed genuine by James Spence that I know are fraudulent. And problems with PSA/DNA are well documented. These COA's are not an excuse for not doing your homework. I wouldn't buy anything just on the presence of a COA. I would have to be comfortable with the signature myself.

A couple of years ago and not long after I had seen a fake King signature with a James Spence COA there were several Babe Ruth baseballs being auctioned by Heritage. I have always wanted a Babe Ruth signed ball and had just about convinced myself to bid on one. It would have sold for a few thousand dollars and there was no certainty that I could approach the winning bid but I was about convinced to try. Then I saw that James Spence had authenticated the signature. I knew from the fraudulent King signature they certified that they were not infallible and I realized that I was no expert in Babe Ruth's signature so I got cold feet and didn't bid. I'll likely never own a Ruth signed ball because there are forgeries out there and I am not comfortable enough to authenticate one on my own.

That is why I stuck to comics, and art. If I personally did not get the signature I will always question a signature just a tiny little bit.

I've won several book auctions from Heritage. In fact, my S/L Gunslinger I came from a Heritage-arranged sale. (I made them a fairly lowball offer once the actual auction winner backed out, and they accepted.) Several of my Arkham House gems came from them as well.

For the current auction, mentioned above, I've got bids in on 4 or 5 books. I don't expect I'll win, but it's fun to try. If I ever have to liquidate one of my collections, it will likely be through Heritage as they get some amazingly high prices. Certainly if I were a seller I'd skip all the eBay bullshit and use Heritage.

One thing I really like is if you get on their mailing list as a bidder, once or twice a year (when they have a themed "Grand Auction" for books) you'll get the very nice glossy item guide in the mail. There was one a couple of years ago that featured a bunch of golden-age sci-fi first editions and some amazing sci-fi original art pieces from the pulp era through the '70s. I don't collect art but my God some of those pieces were amazing.

What, I can't save a few bucks? I'll have it sent direct to, Glenn.

Arrggghhh!!! What an idiot!!! I was so consumed with making it a HF auction item I didn't really think it through!!! OK, let the ridiculing begin!!! LOL My bad!!!

I'm guessing that was your bid then? Just want to make sure before any actual ridiculing

Yeah, ridicule away. I was so wrapped up in it as a HF auction item that I did not think it through. My bad!!!

When I read fine for a dustjacket description, I don't expect to see any defects.

**edit** when I see a F/NF I assume (perhaps incorrectly?) that the first F relates to the dustjacket, with the book being described secondary. I just read further detail in the auction that says dustjacket is NF. So my initial comments may not be warranted, but then again, not sure if that dustjacket would meet NF conditions either...

Does age factor into the condition terms of a book? What I mean is say a book from 1938 that has visible defects to the cover, and to the book itself is it considered fine based on the age? Versus say a book from 2000 that should have no real defects at all which then would be given a condition of Fine/Fine? I never really purchased older books before, and books seems to have a much different grade system than say sports cards. Thank you in advance for any clarification.

I would say that age doesn't factor into condition. When you start grading books, you're looking at edgewear, cornerwear, bumps, tears, rips, stains, binding, rubbing, scratches, yellowing pages, smoke smell, etc etc etc. It shouldn't matter if the book is new or one hundred years old, you would still grade it the same. You can say "This is in fantastic condition FOR ITS AGE," but that's about it.

I would say that age does play a factor. A Night Shift DJ might be slightly faded and considered NF+. Age does not mean that defects should not be mentioned.

"Reviews'This review is surprised that feminist critics have not jumped on King's fiction prior to this: the contributors document the pervasiveness of misogyny, homophobia, gynophobia, Oedipal complexes, and every kind of neurotic projection imaginable in King's work. These psychological conditions seem to be the very source of horror in much of his fiction..."

This book is not Stephen King, but the grading interested me into asking about age, and grading condition. This is what the seller stated.

"Condition: Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked. As if it rolled off the press.

Dust Jacket: Original - Near Fine as pictured. Small chips to crown & foot of spine, small fraying & chips top edge and chip out top right seam, as pictured."

$6. I think they have the wrong image:

Stephen King, in his book Danse Macabre, a non-fiction review of the horror genre, lists The Haunting of Hill House as one of the finest horror novels of the late 20th century and provides a lengthy review. According to the Wall Street Journal, the book is "now widely regarded as the greatest haunted-house story ever written."[2] In his review column for F&SF, Damon Knight selected the novel as one of the 10 best genre books of 1959, declaring it "in a class by itself."

Looks like a "gift edition" of the talisman (1984) just went for 128

Sad to see a beautiful book missing the slipcase and having been poorly treated.
Still, $10 is a steal:

The reserve wasn't met on that Talisman.
IIRC those went for around $150 on average 3 or 4 years ago when I thought about getting one.

Seems to be a bit below average - maybe not a bunch of people were watching

Probably will sell for more than the current $9.99 (no bids), but if not, for ten bucks it's a deal:

I've been keeping an eye out for a bargain on a Gift Talisman set, and on average they seem to be going for $140-$160. Betts has one for $135 at the moment.

For those who collect nonfiction first appearances here is an auction that contains the December 1995 issue of OUTSIDE magazine. King's article is "My Little Serrated Security Blanket." It is a hard one to find and I don't know why that should be....but it is.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/271192967002?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I'm also on the lookout for this one.

What I find extremely annoying is that apparently, my eBay search results are incomplete. Even when I copy/paste the exact title of this particular listing in the eBay search bar it doesn't turn up. I can only access the listing because you provided a link and I put it in my Watch List.

The same is happening with listings for a couple of other items that I could only access because I found the eBay link via Google - how stupid is that?

I'm mostly looking for oddball magazine appearances at the moment and I have to assume that, because of incomplete search results, I already missed out on other stuff I'm looking for.

Did someone get a really good deal on this one or has the market really fallen off this much for this book?

I have not been tracking the prices on COTW but was this another awesome deal or the going rate these days?

That's odd, did you check the search worldwide box?

I think the search engine only brings up results that ship to your specific country, no?

I use eBay.com so I don't need to use the 'worldwide' setting for items from the USA to come up in my searches. And it's not that I only get results for items that are shipped to Europe, either. For example, when I search for stephen king right now I get 12,952 active listings, of which 9,172 belong to the 'books' category. And lots and lots of these only ship to the US.

No, there's something weird going on in general - more people are complaining about the way eBay generates results lists.

I believe both were mentioned here. That certainly was market rate that day.
