But, some guy who thinks the Est. 1982 doesn't work-unless it was a DMG shirt, prevails.....at least until your next post.
BTW, you still haven't adequately addressed your "Great Balls Of Fire" avatar-I have received 12 member complaints....and 6 compliments about it.

I read the (as a matter of fact I contribute to the) Catalog, and the series, I just thought the "Deschain" Est. 1982 didn't work. BTW the Gunslinger published by Grant was 1982, but purportedly King first wrote the beginning chapters of the book on June 19th, 1970.
You-the King-pun intended, of short stories should know the official year the 1st installment saw print (and it wasn't 1982).

Yeah, I had a similar first thought when I saw it. '82 was obviously referring to the publish year for DT1 but as far as "Deschain" goes... who knows?
That whole "Est." thing is stupid and annoying anyways. Bad shirt is bad.

I was lucky enough to pick this one up. I also was considering the $395 sharpie one but after I asked for and received pics I decided to pass. His sig just does not look all that good in sharpie. It is nothing to get excited about. I remember passing on it back when the asking price was less than half of the current listing. I don't recall exactly but to me it looked more like a promotional brochure than an actual proof. I think it is misrepresented a little. Having said that, it is an item that I do not have in my collection.

You can use my picture as the lead for the thread. Before i found betts books and this website, i paid a pretty stupid amount to "clean up" my first edition collection. I think i paid $600 for a copy of the shining. :( i paid $400 for legacies from CD. :(

where the hell is it... and how the hell does anything sale there if the thread can't be found?

This is what Mark sent me. As you can see it's fairly large (compared to the computer screen it's leaning against):

I think that is likely a Perma-bound or Turtleback edition made for libraries. I don't think it was published that way.

I ordered a Skeleton Crew proof from him yesterday when he had it listed for $25 .
A few hours later i got an email saying it was a typo , it should read $625 :(
Now it seems the price is even higher .

During my recent communications with Copper Dragon Books I found Mark to be a nice guy, but one thing I noticed is that almost every book I inquired about seems to have been listed at the wrong price. For example the signed THINNER ARC had a price tag of $140 but the actual price will be $395, and the Sherlock Holmes anthology is listed at $100 but will go for $500 (including the stapled Doctor's Case 'proof addendum').

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what he's going to list next (he said there will be more).

When the listings first appeared I saw a fine proof of CHRISTINE listed for $55. But when I put in in my shopping basket it was $455. I think that was a glitch in ABE rather than an error on Mark's part but something seems a little off here.

Thank you for clearing that up.

I don't think I cleared anything up. In the case of the CHRISTINE proof it was a missing digit (4) in the listing that showed up magically when I got the book in my shopping basket. In the case of the THINNER arc it was something else....listed at $140 but actually $395. That seems like an entry error on Mark's part.

Ive purchased many many books from Abe and saw something like that only once. I think its also curious that it seems to be on so many of his listings. Not just an isolated one or two but the majority. I dont like it. I dont know this seller but being of a suspicious mind I would have to guess he did not know the market before listing and as the interest is flooding in he revised his prices.
There was a purchase I made some time ago and I did see a price change when I added it to my basket. In asking the seller about it he said he had changed his price after the original listing but there was a delay in the new price showing up (on the actual listing) and when you put it in your basket the revised price shows up. In this case he had lowed his price so I was happy.

Here is the answer:

"We had the Homebase program glitch out on us a few times and it closed down while doing data entry on the books. Bringing it back up everything looked fine but when the listings were uploaded some of the prices came up wrong. I hope I have caught everything by now and we are doing shorter runs before uploading and the glitch has not repeated."

I'm in agreement with you there. I don't use the reserve at all myself. Nobody really likes it as far as I know - especially having to guess what it is and/or spending a bunch of time to be the winner and losing anyway. That kinda sucks!

I just put the minimum price I want/need to get for it and if it sells fine, if not that's the way it goes. Occasionally I use a buy-it-now, but most often not (unless I have more than one of something then I think it's a bit better to list that way fee-wise and so on).

I couldn't agree more. Especially those folks that list the item at .99$ with a reserve!!! Tell me what your price is, let me decide if I want to pay it and move on!!! I just don't really see the practicality of this format. Then again, I predominantly "Buy".

I am not sure if I understand the minimun bid process that great... but you can place a bid greater the reserve (min bid), and no one else runs the biiding up, you will lose. Is that right?

Problem is you have no idea what the "reserve" price is. You have to keep bidding until you reach it, just to find what the Seller's minimum price is. It's kinda dumb IMHO, but I'm sure it has it's purposes for Seller's otherwise it wouldn't be an option. It's just from a "Buyer's" standpoint that it is infuriating I suppose.

Dan
06-29-2012, 01:10 PM
As I understand it, sellers do this to try to get people to look at their auction. I believe, at least it used to be this way years ago, that if the top bidder didn't meet the reserve the seller could still proceed with the auction at the top bid price. They might have changed the rules. I don't like reserve either, but it is often used in public auctions.

That is not right.

If the hidden reserve is, say, $487, and you place a bid for $500, then the eBay auction will show you as the current high bid at $487. It doesn't matter if anyone else bids or not. If it ends like that, you are committed to buy at $487.

Personally, I think all eBay auctions should start off at $1.00 with no reserve. If you are using an auction, you are tacitly agreeing to let the market decide the value of the item. It sells for what it sells for.

If you are trying to sell at a minimum of gumpteen million dollars, that it seems to me that you don't really want to sell your item at auction. Use BIN instead.

Jimimck
06-29-2012, 01:14 PM
Our local eBay type site at least tells you what the reserve was at the end of the auction if it hasn't been met. That way if the item is relisted you get a good idea what the reserve will be second time around.

Low auction starting prices "excite" bidders. The potential to get something for a "steal" is very inticing. By putting a reserve, you still get the chance to excite the buyers, and protect yourself from something selling too cheaply.

I buy and sell equally. I do not use reserves...I can't say why...I just don't

Theres some sort of psychological thing about the bidding process and being the WINNER. Many times Ive seen an item go for much more in an auction than the same item listed with a BIN which never made any sense to me (but I also dont gamble). I also know buyers who never look at items that are BINS and will only look at auction items. Although Im not a big fan of the Reserve price I can understand why a seller would use it: 1) Entice interest and excitement, 2) See what the market will bear 3) protection from monetary loss. I mostly buy and I have to admit reserve prices also put me off. I will watch an item with a reserve price but too often Ive seen the bids exceed what I would pay and the reserve still hasnt been met. You can also email and ask the seller what their reserve price is.

I am not sure if anyone is watching the bidding for the 1/200 UK TWTTK books on eBay. I find it intriguing that lower number book has a bid of $318 and the other book has a bid of $600. Quite a bit difference in price.

I'm not sure if that means anything. I've seen it happen many times that people are involved in a bidding war for a certain book while at the same time the exact same edition is available in another auction (or even with Buy It Now) at a much lower price. Apparently not everyone keeps track of every listing like we do!

I was watching it, was considering it if cheap enough. The book was in horrible condition, I was going to take out the signature page and have it framed. It was signed on the main title page so it would have made a nice piece to hang on the wall with a real King signature. I wasn't willing to pay over $100 for it though. To bad because I was looking forward to hanging that up !

Not necessarily.

Perhaps the reserve was $2000, and the high bid was $1999?

Unless the high bidder's bid is equal to or greater than the reserve, the bid amount displayed will be one "increment" (in this case $25) over the second highest bidder's bid.

However, we can determine that only one person was willing to bid over $1400 on this book.

Well, I have the DVD's, but not the "Phonograph" promo portion and when I was trolling around to make it complete awhile ago they were going for $250-350 complete. Could be different now as this was 6-7 months ago. I would think their price has gone down a bit the more we are removed from the initial release, but I could be wrong.

What would you guys consider a good price on a brand new still in factory box BOB Phonograph promo? What would you pay?

Well, I have the DVD's, but not the "Phonograph" promo portion and when I was trolling around to make it complete awhile ago they were going for $250-350 complete. Could be different now as this was 6-7 months ago. I would think their price has gone down a bit the more we are removed from the initial release, but I could be wrong.

Wow...Did I know that? You have promo DVDs and no phono and I have phono without the promo DVDs..... Have to keep that in mind..
Actually it is one of the nicer King promo items so I doubt the value is going down, However, if one keeps an eye out there will always be an option at some point to find one as a bargain

A word of advice on that phonograph BOB promo. DON'T set anything on top of it and DON'T pick it up by grabbing the sides. I already broke mine. I'm usually EXTREMELY careful with my things but somehow I managed to break two collectibles in one morning. Live and learn, I guess.

I'm going to post photos in my collection thread of the damaged phonograph and see if anyone knows how to fix it properly.

The phonographs are basically designed to "break". Eventually, the batteries wear out anyway and can't be replaced. At least, I have no idea how to replace them without damaging the casing. If anyone figures that one out, let me know.

As for the price for the one on ebay now, I'd say that's great - especially since it works.

The batteries can be replaced without damage to unit. I'm swamped right now, but when I get a chance this fall I will put a series of screen shots together on how to safely remove case to get to them. They are a series of watch batteries placed together that runs a cooling CPU fan that makes the turntable work. I had to take mine apart (carefully of course), and adjust the light sensor that makes it cut on when lid is opened.

I thought my batteries ran out as well, but ended up being the light sensor needed alignment with the small hole (upper left hand corner). In other words, the unit thought the lid was closed all the time.

CYCLE OF THE WEREWOLF 'custom bound' pre-publication state of the S/L edition (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stephen-King-CYCLE-OF-THE-WEREWOLF-Custom-Bound-Edition-Signed-1-of-5-/130730628396?pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item1e7027152c#ht_500wt_1208)

Signed by King and Wrightson - 1 of 5 existing copies. For sale by forum member Kacod.

carlosdetweiller
07-15-2012, 04:18 AM
Despite what Kyle states in his listing I do not think that that is a pre-publication state. I think that Christopher Zavisa planned a super deluxe custom binding for those five sets and just never got around to it. An unbound text block from a proposed limited edition is what I would call it. I once had a chance to buy a "pre-publication" state from L.W. Currey but all it consisted of were loose photocopied pages of typescript with the word "proof" handwritten at the top of the first page. It also had photocopies of the 12 Wrightson color illustrations in a rough early state. I actually had it in my hands but just didn't feel the love at a price of $5000 and returned it to Lloyd. I think that Chris Cavalier bought it (maybe at a lower price) and it ultimately sold to another collector when he listed his collection with Stu Tinker. To my knowledge that is the only pre-publication state. I do have a photocopy (43 pages) of King's original typescript that came from Kirby McCauley's office (it just doesn't have "proof" handwritten on it).

One other thing that I recall.....the set that Currey was selling was missing one chapter of text (one month, February maybe?). My copy from McCauley's office has all twelve chapters (months).

How many states did Zavisa plan for the S/L? I know of:

"Custom Bound Edition" (although like Kyle's mine is unbound) (5 total), "Artists Copy" (8 total), "Publishers Copy" (8 total), "Collectors Edition" (100 copies w/ Wrightson drawing), "Deluxe Edition" (250 copies).

Anyone know of others?

So, it sounds like someone pointed out to him that it was the wrong book. He takes advantage of this, though, because the listing now says,

(ONLY ONE EVER FLAT SIGNED)!!!! There was also 25 of these commissioned from amazon, but this is the ONLY one flat signed I have ever seen!!!!

I reported it. I'm curious how many it would take for eBay to take down the item. Shall we try?
