GREAT KING and HILL COLLECTION TO BE SOLD

Well, I think the time has finally come. I have reached a point in my collection where anything I buy to add to it is going to be ridiculously expensive. Plus the wife and I are looking to adopt and that costs a real pretty penny. I look at my books now and they look like a monument to my selfishness. I am 95% sure I want to try to sell it all but want to sleep one more night on it.

If I do, I will give everyone here a week or so of first dibs. I will post a list by the end of this week, but to give you a rough idea, I have everything except (note I collect US versions only, with the exception of Colorado Kid – no UKs):

My Pretty Pony Stainless Steel, The Plant 1-3,FireStarter Asbestos in the S/L, and DT 1-3 in the S/L.

I have matching #60 in DT 4-7, LSOE. I have Lettered Buick 8, Dolan’s, Green Mile, Regulators, Skeleton Crew, and Talisman (not PC/ publisher’s copy) in addition to their S/L and gift editions, if they had one. If I did not list a Lettered I don’t have it (but I do have the S/L). I have the Colorado Kid in all states, but two of the traycase are PC’s, the only ones in my collection (that are UK or PC).

I have all of the trade firsts (including F or NF copies of the early Doubledays). I have almost every state of the US proofs, you can look and see what I don’t have under a posting on SK proofs I made maybe 2 months ago, or it might have been in “items wanted”. I bought that recent tall Night Shift proof on Ebay (it does have some soiling on the covers but is not in near as bad a shape as was discussed on this site), along with Ned Dameron’s manuscript copy of The Wastelands. I had a cool wooden traycase made for that.

I want to be clear this is not going to be a fire sale; I will try to get what I paid for them at least. Some will be great deals because that’s what I got. Some I bought more recently will reflect more recent pricing. I will ship worldwide and insure at actual costs. Initially, at least, I want to avoid PayPal if at all possible, but we can talk about that.

…and no magazines. It’s a great collection of US firsts, limiteds, and proofs.

I have a great Joe Hill collection too, all of his Lettereds (a “B” HSB), 20th Century Ghosts in the slipcase, several mags with first appearances of stories, all the chapbooks. Do not yet have in hand the Lettered Locke and Key from SubT Press, but I will get them in matching letters.

I am going to post this in 4 places: Intriguing Sales, Collectible Classifieds, and 2 Joe Hill threads. The managers may move or delete some if they don’t like me doing that, no problem. I will post the lists in Collectible Classifieds only, OK?

What you folks don’t take either goes to Ebay or consignment, I have to crunch some numbers before I decide. Sorry for the long post, but a lot of this stuff will interest you guys.

Last thing: remember I reserve the right to wake up tomorrow, and use the late, great Gilda Radner’s line: “never mind.”

---Kyle.

We'll leave the single post here, but let's put the rest of the discussion/listing of it in Collectible Classified as you mentioned.

So a couple weeks ago I win a Waste Lands S/L for $213 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290353589033) and today I win a Black House S/L for $153 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180419884789&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT).

WTF?

Part of me says you got lucky, the other part of me says that the market, sadly, is hurting that much.

Case in point, how many of us have books for sale right now that would have SOLD for more than we're asking in 2005 or 2006, and have had little or no action on them?

You know, I think they were just poorly listed.

In the Waste Lands auction, the seller did not put the word SIGNED in the title.

In the Black House auction, the seller did not put the word STEPHEN in the title.

Tippy, my fault it went to $153. It was sitting at $99 until about an hour before closing, so I said wtf and put a bid in at $150. Grats on getting it. GREAT price. sorry about bumping it up on you.

Hey...no sweat...and besides...If you had not...someone else may have done so in the last few minutes of the auction.

The seller has the shipping @ $4 for Priority. I am skeptical that he will actually ship it Priority (he actually has a recent negative fb for stating he will ship an item Priority and then shipping it Media Mail instead). I don't care how it is shipped as long as it arrives safe.

Got my first two 1st edition DT books today, i'm not much of a collector but I thought it would be nice to at least have some nice editions of the DT books, got W&G for £36($59), and Wastelands for £28($48 ). Now i'm looking for DOTT and the Viking re-issues.

Because the DT books were hardly cheap at publication ($45 rrp for a 1997 trade!) it means that people actually look after them so there easy to find in excellent condition. I have such a hard time trying to find all the books from the 80's and 90's in good condition, there not valuable in anyway so I guess people just throw them about not caring about the state of them.

Btw is this auction over-priced?.

I'm confused. If you were willing to pay a certain price for an eBay auction item, why would you apologize for placing a legitimate bid?

I think he is saying that he is sorry he jacked up the price by $54.

Like I said, no hard feelings whatsoever. I would have felt like a thief had I paid $99 for it. You placed your bid....it was what you were willing to pay. That's how it works.

You are correct...we all have to start somewhere..but to have a book, a S/L no less, this person has either been in the game awhile or is new to Ebay. Either way I personaly will not deal with anyone that has a 25 or below rating only because I want to be sure of the person selling has had positive transactions in the past. Maybe its just me but after all it is my money :panic:

tippy4
10-22-2009, 08:34 PM
Totally? Really? Seriously...I am asking because I did not know that.

I swear their policy used to be the seller had to have a certain feedback rating for you to be covered. I dunno.

Regardless, sellers need to use their heads when selling things. List a few cheap things first, build up a few feedbacks, and THEN go to the higher dollar items. Chooch is not alone with not wanting to deal with people with little or no feedback, and that only hurts the seller.

The flip side of this, is that there are some great deals out there if you are a buyer and willing to take a chance.

It's like any credit card purchase...if you don't get the item/item not as described, your CC company will go to bat for you....It's a hassle and a pain, maybe, but you're protected.

This seller probably doesn't have anything else to sell....he/she realized they have one valuable item, and that's it...

I dont know Rahfa..I dont know anyone that only has one book of King, and a S/L to boot just laying around.. Tippy hit it on the head...if your just getting started then sell a few inexpensive items that you can build some type of reputation and then go for the higher priced item. I also beleive (but dont know for sure) that if you paid thru PayPal then your CC would really just hand you over to them (PayPal) for the issue. There are alot of great deals out there and that is one of them, but I'll pass solely on the big fat "0" rating. I dont need the hassle if it goes south. I mayhap be wrong, but hey....it works best for me Oh and Tippy...Seller must have a positive 25 + for you to be covered by PayPal.

Oh you are right John there is a possibility that this could be the only book they have...but like I said I know of no one that has a S/L only. I found a 1/1 of Treasure Island at a garage sale and paid 50 cents for it but...the price this seller wants seems to me they know what they have..perhaps did their homework, and have decided that Ebay was the way to go. I for one would have coinsigned it with a dealer rather then trying to sell my very first thing on Ebay with it. Zero feedback also means this person has never bought anything on Ebay also (I know you know this) ...I dont know...I'll watch this and if someone here snatches it up I'd love to hear about the book and the transaction !

You have to remember that the sale of that book was limited to those of us in the US. If you lived in another country, you didn't have much choice other than getting it in the secondary market. Of course, that doesn't explain the $600 price. That surprises me too.

Any thoughts on the starting price of this auction (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160371984946&_trksid=p2759.l1259)? Mr. Rabbit Trick perhaps? I mean, I know it's far from a desirable copy from a collector's point of view, but still.... it would fill a hole in my collection. But paying at least £99 for an ex-library copy seems a lot of money.

It's a library 'permabound' book in very bad condition. I would say it would be worth about £15 to £20 only.

It is really cool. I wonder why the plaque says #3 of 250?

Rachael was doing an edition of 250 I believe you could get it in a pewter or bronze finish and the first 19 were hand painted like the one in the auction they were around 300.00 and the pewter/bronze were 100.00? less. I have #11, I think I remember Bob got one, and Stephen King, can't remember who else.
I have a hand painted one, too (#13 - same as my Cujo guitar), and it's absolutely beautiful. It came in a satin lined, padded, box - which the seller doesn't mention. :orely:

I did forget to mention it is beautiful the pictures do not do it justice and even the box was beautiful.

I suspect it will sell for considerably under the original price and someone will get a great deal.
Hopefully me. :ninja:

I bought this pencil drawing on Stephen King's house in Bangor today for $25 on eBay. I just thought the detail was pretty great and it kinda "called to me." For $25, I'm happy.

I agree that it is stunning, but I also agree with Mr. R.T. in that it is fan art in a down economy, with likely more sentimental value to participants in the book tour for which it was created than to the general DT fan.

I look forward to its arrival. :D

Too much money for me. I have ZERO skill for putting those things together and would have to pay someone to do it for me. I could take a prepainted model of Superman and end up with a one armed guy wearing a green suit, with no cape, with a "Z" on the chest.

Back in the dark ages when I was a kid, I LOVED putting together model kits. I really liked the sailing ships. I put in all the rigging, etc. Now, because I shake so badly, I'd make a gigantic mess of anything I tried, I'm sure. This is a temptation, though!

Thank you, Ceri, for posting that.

I did find a link a couple days ago, however it wasn't the full link that you posted which goes to the slideshow. The link I had was shorter and has been locked by the owner, so we can no longer access the photos there.

If it were unlocked, I believe "my" link had the still versions of the photos in that slideshow, and holds the photos of the pages signed by the all the people who participated in the book tour.

I wish the full album were unlocked so we could see the additional photos again.

Thanks again.

There was a Starmont book entitled Discovering Stephen King, but it was edited by Darrel Schweitzer that came out in 1985. Another Starmont book, entitled The Shining Reader, was edited by Anthony Magistrale and came out in 1991. I have a feeling that the above is either a rework of that one or a copy with a new title.

I don't think so. Recently the S/L of WAG has sold for that. But, why not put it out there at first to see if anyone bites. Sort of test the waters.

Once before Christine, I saw one. I don't think they are as valuable as the PC or numbered editions. All that has happened is that one of the extra copies that were intended to replace any damaged copies has made it's way to the market. I would rather have a numbered, lettered, or PC edition. Sure they cost more, but it would be worth that extra cost to me.

Anytime you start an auction that high, you really reduce the potential buyers to a very slim number.

Basically, you're just waiting for one buyer who wants to get it, so it's not the greatest way to do it...and I say that with a $2100 Talisman lettered edition for sale right now.

I just started collecting a few months ago, but did a lot of research on this book before buying my copy for $1550. If I were a dealer I'd price it around $2K, but if I wanted a quick sale I'd shoot for around $1750. My copy was by far the cheapest I found, but it can definitely be had for under $1900 right now.

I think Kyle said somewhere (probably in the Classifieds thread) that he wanted to more or less break even when selling his collection, so my guess is that this is what he paid for the book originally (at least in the same ballpark). I've been watching his listings (and I bought the Cycle of the Werewolf trade HC from him) and as far as I can see, some of his listings are on the pricier side, while others are very good deals (IMO). So that does indicate he simply wants to try and earn his investments back.

That would be a good question. I have no idea what MAC has done with it's OS over the many years since this came out. I'm a MS person.

Didn't you see the 5000 Mac ads on TV that all say everything that was ever conceived by the mind of man will work flawlessly on a Mac with absolutely no thought by the user?

Oh yeh I've seen them, however, unlike the masses (it seems) I don't believe everything I see on TV. :)

I've seen Windows versions of this online, but I don't know if they work with modern operating systems. I think it was a pretty low-level program so it might.

I may have to get it and find out.

BTW: Everything does work flawlessly on a mac. I've got the implant so I can just post telepathically. :cyclops:

Ari, so what other games are there. I never knew there was a Pet Sematary one.

Ari_Racing
12-10-2009, 02:21 PM
Well, the ones I remember:

- The Mist
- The Dark Half (PC)
- F13 (PC)
- The Lawnmower man (PC, SNES)

There are others VERY VERY old for Commodore 64, like The Running man, The Running man 2, Jerusalem's Lot 1 and 2.

And then you have minigames:
- Misery 2 (Gates vs Bates) (Misery spoof)
- The diary of Ellen Rimbauer

Other odd things:
- Scenarios and add ons for The Sims 2, King related.
- The Shining level for Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition.

As for Pet Sematary, you can check it out here:

http://wireless.ign.com/articles/103/1037897p1.html

And a video:

Pet Sematary for the IPhone and IPod Touch Video Review - Video

Hope it helps! :)

I don't think the ones for Commodore are legal games (I really don't remember, since I played them more than 10 years ago in an emulator).

I have plans to develop one next year :) For now it's just a project.

I saw that too but didn't even "bookmark" it. Seems priced unrealistically. The story is good but basically it is just three King signatures on some photocopied material. Unless one is building a collection of Burton Hatlen or Donald M. Grant material I just don't see the big deal. I'd put it at $600 tops.

Am I missing something here?

Funny, I was thinking the same price. I want The Dark Man to sit with my Artist Edition of Devil's Wine. Thought it would be kind of a neat addition with the book.

If anyone negotiates a decent price for this set and is willing to sell me The Dark Man I will help with the cost.

Considering the time involved to make each one individually it's not a bad price.
Since the "Dome" is transparent (opaque), I would like to see a case made out of plastic.

I agree, a plastic case would be cool. But what do you mean opaque? Opaque is the opposite of clear. If you mean like a plastic that's sort of dark and foggy to represent pollution

I think that's a fantastic idea.

They are pricey but I think priced fairly for the length and content. Significant King correspondence (not the postcard type) is pretty rare. Someone like Lloyd Currey would probably be asking $2500 and probably get it.

There is no way in hell it'll go for that price.

I noticed that this one is NOT numbered/lettered, and the description alludes to as much as well calling this one an extra.

6 days to go and it has 9 bids? Yeah, it's going to go for more than that.
