MODS!!

I apologize because I was CERTAIN this thread existed but I just could not find it.

A couple of questions:

Can anyone please explain the difference between the Physically Unable to Perform (PU) list and the Injured Reserve (IR.)

And what is this I saw during the preseason where an injured player gets cut from a team with the phrase "and was compensated." I've never noticed that before.

I believe players on the PUP list are guys who haven't been able to even practice yet for the current year.

So if I attend a single practice in a given year, then get hurt, I go to IR?

Why is such a distinction made?

I'm honestly not sure. I will do some research and see what I come up with.

The way it reads to me is that any player that can't practice before the season starts can be put on the active/PUP list so they don't count as a roster spot. Once they practice they have to come off the PUP list and count as part of the roster. If the player is still on the PUP list once the season starts then they go to Reserve/PUP and must sit out the first six weeks of the season. The team must make a decision within the next six weeks to either keep them on the PUP list the rest of the season, activate them and cut someone else from the 53 man roster, or waive them.

A player can be put on IR at any point once the season starts but the player must sit out eight games from that point. More than one can go on IR but only one or two can return after eight weeks. Any additional are for the season. Before this year only one player a season was able to return from IR per team so teams would have to make a decision if they had two on IR that recovered quickly.

So basically you have to start on PUP and not practice to use that designation. IR is considered a more serious injury and can happen at any point so a player is less likely to be reactivated from it than PUP.

That was pretty much my findings as well. It's also interesting to note that players on IR count against the salary cap but not against the 53 man roster.

Then why do I see, in the preseason, I noticed just this very preseason, guys getting off IR then cut...them compensated. What is the compensation all about. I have never heard this before. I have been following the NFL for 43 years now.

I currently watch the NFL, but I do not try to understand the NFL (the league that has fits trying to decide...what a catch is).

Seems this thread is dead?

I bet the Texans wish they would have accepted the first offer they got for Watson. He is probably untradeable now.

Yeap. It's looking more and more likely that this is going to trial. Career might be over in the next year or 2.

I guess I never really thought about it before, but I just read that Troy Aikman is moving to ESPN and will be making around 17.5 MILLION a year. To sit around. And talk about football. Geez.
No wonder getting sports channels costs a fortune.
