District 9 is a science fiction masterpiece. A shame Blomkamp couldn't keep his directorial trajectory upward.

The Piano Teacher is an amazing, disturbing film about humanity embracing its universal sickness.

Watchchoo Talkin bout Fernando? Chappie was a fucking masterpiece. Die Antwoord should've won every Oscar, BAFTA, SAG, Golden Globe, and MTV Movie Award ever made.

The crash and burn of Blomkamp's career is one of the bigger cinematic disappointments for me in recent years. I hope he turns it around one day.

His vision for the Alien franchise seems like it would have been better that Ridley Scott's. Too bad Scott squashed it.

Totally agree. I was really excited for that. I don't know this for sure, but I feel like the public and critical reception of Chappie prompted them to pull him off of the Alien franchise.

Chappie had to be one of the most irritating movie trailers I've ever seen. I think it was a combination of seeing it so often at the movies, Die Antwoord's presence, and being annoyed at how Chappie spoke.

Agreed.

I remember watching Elysium in theaters, and at around the halfway mark - once I knew that no matter what happened during the remainder of the film, it would not be salvageable past 'mediocre' - I got a nasty feeling in the pit of my stomach. Like I knew that Blomkamp was about to take a tumbling, Shyamalan-esque fall.

Yes. Certainly couldn't have been worse than the disaster that was Prometheus. Haven't seen Covenant yet, however.

Interesting. All movies in this group are still in the running to move on, since The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Rescue Dawn, and The Piano Teacher are all tied for the last spot.

I'm kinda surprised that Miyazaki's films aren't doing better.

If it comes to it, you can take away my vote for Rescue Dawn. I liked it a lot but it wasn't Herzog's best of the decade for me. I haven't seen the ones I didn't vote for so that's the best I can offer here. There might still be another tie though....

It's not? What do you prefer to it, outside of his docs?

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and probably Invincible.

Just one vote for any one of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Rescue Dawn, or The Piano Teacher will avoid a three-way tie here.

Shocked to see how highly Dawn of the Dead rated, while three better movies have to fight for the last spot.
