Wanted to let everyone know that the paperback version of HORNS has the short story "The Devil on the Staircase" at the end of the book. This story was part of the Stories anthology that came out last year.

This may have been beating to death already....but I was wondering if the character Iggy was developed before the actual story (because he is so developed compared to the rest of the cast) of Horns or did Iggy grow through the writing of the story? Does the question make sense and would anyone else be interested in the answer?

Anyways, sounds like a pretty cool event B.V. and I wish you the best of luck!

Hey, I'm trying to help a customer figure out what some of his books might be worth. Does anyone have an idea of the current value of these:

- Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill - Dated 2007 by Gollancz - Signed limited edition of only 1,300 slipcased copies, still sealed in publisher's original shrinkwrap.

- Thumbprint by Joe Hill - Dated 2008 by Subterranean Press - Stated first edition, in original box. This is a deluxe limited edition of one of only 52 copies hand-signed by the author and stored in a solander box. This copy is lettered "PP". This volume is in like new condition, with bright, clean pages.

- Gunpowder by Joe Hill - Dated 2008 by PS Publishing - Never read volume, tightly bound

Thank you!

Best,
Brian

I just ordered the signed/slipcased edition from PS for £45 - the trade was much less

According to Dread Central (http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/44357/fox-not-picking-lock-key-next-season):

Were you excited about Fox's small screen adaptation of Joe Hill's (son of Stephen King) Locke & Key? Looks like you'll be containing that excitement for some time to come.

According to Entertainment Weekly, despite having all the pieces in place, it looks as if Fox will not be picking up the show for release for their next season. The project hasn't been confirmed dead by the network, as they could retool it for a later release or it very well could be picked up by another outlet. See? Told you the news sucked.

Miranda Otto, Sarah Bolger, Jesse McCartney, Ksenia Solo, and Skylar Gaertner were all set star in the supernatural themed series.

"Locke & Key" revolves around Nina (Miranda Otto) and her three children, Tyler (Jesse McCartney), Kinsey (Sarah Bolger), and Bode (Skylar Gaertner), who survive an unspeakable horror and attempt to rebuild their lives at Keyhouse, their family home in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. It is a mysterious New England mansion with fantastic and transformative keys hidden inside its walls that are also being sought by a hate-filled and relentless creature with ties to the Locke family's past who will stop at nothing to accomplish his sinister goals.

Josh Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") wrote the pilot, which Mark Romanek was directing. Look for more soon!

"Another bit of Joe Hill news I didn’t mention was that he said he definitely plans to do more Gunpowder sequels but has just been caught up with other projects so those have been a bit delayed. However he’ll get back to them as soon as he can and once all the novellas are out he also plans to release them in a collected edition."

So I found this listed at Amazon.com today:

Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft Special Edition
Product Details
Hardcover: 250 pages
Publisher: IDW Publishing (October 11, 2011)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1613770766
ISBN-13: 978-1613770764

Product Description
This deluxe hardcover edition of the first volume of Locke & Key presents the Eisner-nominated series in glorious oversized fashion for the first time. And in addition to the complete "Welcome to Lovecraft" tale, this Special Edition also features Eisner nominee Joe Hill's complete scripts, all packaged under a special die-cut key cover. The ultimate presentation of the acclaimed storyline that began the fantastic tale of the Locke family.

Wouldn't you consider the Sub Press edition of WtoL "oversized?" This is like a reprint of the Sub Press book. Weird...

ya i saw that too. Its like beating a dead horse. They have sold a few versions now and come out with so many so called "variants" wich are nowhere near the quality of the original artwork. IDW tends to bleed every possible drop that joe will let them. There quality is just not there. It wont be anywhere near the quality of Sub press. Im actually a little dissapointed joe is letting them get away with some of the cheese they have sold in the locke and key name.

??? "The original artwork" was published by IDW, not SubPress. I'd say IDW can do whatever they want with it because it's their right to do so. I passed on the SubPress editions because I felt them overpriced. As for the 'cheese' and 'quality just not there' comments... 1) Joe Hill seems like a comic nerd. Comic nerds like variants. I don't think he let them get away with anything. I'm sure none of them got rich of 1000 print runs at $4 a pop. They're just cool to look at. 2) Have you seen IDW's single issue Locke & Key? They're hands down the nicest, highest quality looking single issue comics out there. IDW are compared to Marvel and DC so insignificantly small and their quality by far exceedes them and the price is same(ish). Just look at a regular Batman comic next to L&K then compare the HC edition of the same. They're not even close.

Edit: I am really sorry for sounding like an asshole. Please accept my apologies.
I'm not an authority on comics but I do have 20+ comics on my monthly pull list so I can at least compare.

Also, that update on Joe Hill's website is neat. I ordered last 2 L&K hardcovers.

I don't care what channel it's on. If they're considering doing it, that means they have the green light from Joe Hill. He doesn't think the show's dignity is in question.

Yeah, at this point, I don't care what station it's on...well, that's not true...I don't have any "pay" channels, so HBO and such are out, but MTV would be cool....I can always change the channel when something else comes on! LOL

I have fallen behind in ordering these keys, so if it'll help you out, send me a PM.

On the related matter of specific numbers, I don't keep track of the numbers on my keys, but photos of them are mostly posted in my Collection thread. If you see a #356 on any of them, let me know. I'd be happy to trade for any other number.

The legacy edition of the ghost key was not available until January 2011. The limited edition of the Ghost Key was originally only available at Comic Con 2009. The tag shown in the picture is clearly the legacy edition tag. Definitely a fake.

sgc1999
01-08-2012, 07:03 AM
couple of problems with that auction. 1) the eyes are hollow which means it is not the limited edition but the 2011 legacy ed. 2) the bag is for the legacy, the limited had a short fat bag.

I inquired to verify that it was in fact a Legacy Edition Key, which it was and he offered to sell it to me for $50. I asked how he obtained a legacy edition key signed at comic con in '09 when it was not available until '11 and was told "I got it from a collector.. Hum I'm not sure I guess"

Another eBay guy to watch out for is bonedaddy1234 (http://myworld.ebay.com/bonedaddy1234/?_trksid=p4340.l2559).

Hope it's no one here, but some silly people paid a lot of money for legacy keys.

Head, ghost, and hercules were all on auction from the bonedaddy guy. They all went over $30 each. Not sure if the buyers are ignorant of the situation or if the "Limited Legacy Edition" that he posted them as got them. In his defense, he did have pics which clearly showed the tags that said "Legacy Edition".

WTF would people pay over $30 + $5.50 shipping for keys that you can still buy from Skelton for $25?

The pictures on Amazon and B&N are "placeholders'.
Joe Hill posted a few pictures of the "Deluxe" HERE (http://twitter.com/#!/joe_hill/media/slideshow?url=pic.twitter.com%2F7xeB92el).
Art reprinted full size, this thing must be huge...

Again, the IDW newletter stated "Out This Week", but Joe tweeted he was "hearing that CLOCKWORKS #4, the reprint of GUIDE TO THE KNOWN KEYS, & the luxe edition of WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT are all out Feb 1st".

Of course Diamond Comic Distributors has Clockworks #4 shipping in December, so really, who knows when they will hit the street.
All things considered, I am betting Joe Hill is closer to the actual date.

More useful information about getting your signed copy: they can only take phone orders. Here’s their number: 603 431-2100. You can get up to three books signed as long as one of them is Locke & Key, vol. 5: Clockworks. The other two can be anything that’s got my name on it, including the other books in the Locke & Key series, Horns, Heart-Shaped Box, 20th Century Ghosts, or any of the anthologies I’m in, including the just-released Shadow Show. I doodle a great Lake Champlain monster on the cover page of my story in Shadow Show. On the subject of doodles: only one per order. Shipping costs are on you.

here are the internal notes for NOS4A2...

Keynote
From Joe Hill, New York Times bestselling author of Heart-Shaped Box and Horns, comes a spine-tingling, bone-chilling new novel of supernatural suspense that will keep readers up all night.

Description
Victoria McQueen has a gift for finding things (a lost bracelet, a forgotten ribbon, answers to unasked questions): all she has to do is jump on her bike and ride through the Shorter Way bridge and she’ll come out the other side wherever it is she needs to be—even if that’s hundreds of miles away—in a matter of moments. Vic doesn’t tell anyone, not even her parents, about her unusual ability because she knows no one would understand it. Hey, she doesn’t understand it herself. And then she learns that she’s not the only one with a special gift.

There are others . . . like Charlie Manx. Charlie Manx burned a man to death in his black 1938 Rolls- Royce Wraith, but that was not the worst of it. Rumor has it he liked children; that he kidnapped, tortured, and killed dozens of them, and then hung Christmas ornaments in the pine trees around his house in their memory. The newspapers dubbed it “The Sleigh-House.” The only one ever to escape was a very lucky girl named Victoria McQueen.

Charlie Manx was caught and spent the rest of his days in a maximum security prison. Years later, finally, mercifully, he died. And then his body disappeared . . . after the autopsy. The police and the media think some sicko took the corpse. But Vic knows: Charlie Manx is on the road again . . . and he has her kid. And this time, Vic McQueen is going after him.

Selling Points
INSTANTNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER: The hardcover edition of Horns debuted at #10 on the New York Times bestseller list and stayed on the list for another week; Joe Hill’s first novel, Heart-Shaped Box, debuted at #10 on the New York Times list—and rose to #6 the following week. It also had multiple-week runs on the USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Book Sense bestseller lists, among others.

HILL AND KING: An excerpt from NOS4A2 will appear in the digital edition of “In the Tall Grass,” a story co-written by Joe Hill and Stephen King, which will be released this fall.

INDIE NEXT FAVORITE: The hardcover edition of Horns was a March 2010 Indie Next pick, and the paperback edition was chosen as a “Now in Paperback” featured title for March 2011. And Heart-Shaped Box was a #1 BookSense Pick in March 2007.

“BEST BOOKS”: Horns was an Amazon.com Best Book of the Month pick in March 2010 that Daphne Durham called “a dark, funny exploration of love, grief, and the nature of good and evil.” Horns was, also, #89 on Amazon’s “Editors’ Top 100 Best Books of the Year” list, and #10 on Amazon’s “MysteryEditors’ Best of the Year” list for 2010. The San Francisco Chronicle, The Seattle Times and the Kansas City Star also named Horns as one of the best books of 2010. Heart-Shaped Box was named a “Best Book of the Year” by Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com, Book Sense, Rocky Mountain News, Atlanta magazine, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Village Voice, Knoxville News-Sentinel, Tampa Tribune, and The Book Standard.

CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED AUTHOR: 20th Century Ghosts, Hill’s collection of short fiction, was extolled in a starred PW review as an “extraordinary debut collection” that “introduces one of the most confident and assured new voices in horror and dark fantasy to emerge in recent years.”

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR: Heart-Shaped Box won the Bram Stoker Award and the International Thriller Writers Award (both for best first novel). 20th Century Ghosts received the Bram Stoker Award, the British Fantasy Award, and the International Horror Guild Award for Best Collection. In addition, various individual stories from the collection have won awards. Hill is the winner of the 2006 William Crawford Prize for Best New Fantasy Writer (for 20th Century Ghosts), and the recipient of the Ray Bradbury Fellowship (in 2002) and the A.E. Coppard Long Fiction Prize (1999).

HILL DOES EXCELLENT BAD GUYS: Neil Gaiman named Craddock McDermott, the “vengeful ghost that came with the suit in Joe Hill’s 2007 novel Heart-Shaped Box,” one of the Top 10 New Classic Monsters (Entertainment Weekly, June 27/July 4, 2008). Charlie Manx in NOS4A2 will not disappoint.

FILM RIGHTS OPTIONED: Horns will be produced by Red Granite’s Riza Aziz and Joey McFarland, Mandalay Pictures president Cathy Schulman and Adam Stone. Joe Hill and Red Granite’s Joe Gatta are the executive producers. Daniel Radcliff (aka Harry Potter) will star as Iggy Perrish.

FOREIGN SALES: Joe Hill is a world-wide sensation—rights for Horns and Heart-Shaped Box have sold everywhere from France and Finland to Indonesian and Arabic speaking countries!

Editor's Audio Script/ Note
NOS-FUR-AH-TOO: That’s how to pronounce the title of Joe Hill’s latest insanely scary, creepy, supernatural thriller. Just like the classic 1922 vampire-horror film. And that’s pretty much where the similarity ends. I mean, there are some pretty gory scenes in Hill’s NOS4A2, but it’s definitely not a mysterious German count doing the blood-sucking.

Joe Hill says NOS4A2 is a book about “a very bad man with a very bad car.” NOS4A2 is the bad car’s vanity license plate. And the bad man is 140-year-old Charlie Manx. Charlie likes children. He likes them so much he kidnaps them and takes them away forever to a special place he calls “Christmasland.” No child has ever come back from Christmasland. No one except a girl named Victoria McQueen. When Vic escaped, Charlie was captured, and put away for life in a prison for the criminally insane. But somehow, years later, Charlie got out. He’s on the road again, hunting little kids. This time he’s got Vic’s son. And this time, Vic is gonna find Charlie Manx and bring him down once and for all.

Joe is an award-winning, New York Times bestselling author with nearly 150,000 followers on Twitter. He writes the award-winning comic book series “Locke & Key,” and has collaborated with his father, author Stephen King, on a short story, which we’ve released as a digital short that sold more than 14,500 copies in its first three weeks on sale. Much like Neil Gaiman and even Stephen King before him, Joe is a creative powerhouse, working on stories, comics, novels, television, and film. He is a brilliant young artist in the early days of his career, and he’s writing this novel, another novel, and a story collection for us.

Joe Hill's top 50 books:

Not long ago I was pointed to a peculiar book. This guy asked independent booksellers around the country to work up lists of their fifty favorite reads, the books they feel most passionate about hand-selling. The results were published in a collection called Read This! Handpicked Favorites from America’s Indie Bookstores.

Some of you might know I have a weakness for lists. In the back of the book, the editor, Hans Weyandt, invites the reader to list their own fifty favorites. I couldn’t help myself. My list is below.

A few notes about the list that follows.

• There’s a difference between “best” and “favorite.” To make a list of the 50 best books in English, I’d have to think about what has done the most to expand the possibilities of literature and what stories have had the deepest cultural impact. That’s hard. It’s much easier to figure out favorites; you know something is a favorite if you get excited thinking about reading it again. It doesn’t have to have deep cultural impact. You just have to love it.

• I’ve organized the books in alphabetical order, by author. It was just too much effort to try to put them in order of preference.

• I have not included graphic novels. That feels like a different list.

• I have included books by people I’m related to. Look, the people I love have written a lot of remarkable books, books that deeply shaped how I think about story myself. To leave them off would require dishonesty, and if yer gonna be dishonest about something like this, why even do it?

• One of the following choices is a big fuckin’ cheat. It has been noted. As the old song goes, it’s my list, I can cheat if I want to. Also, I would (and do) argue that the cheat is possibly the most important selection on the whole list.

Here goes:

The Fifty

The House With A Clock In Its Walls • John Bellairs

* I’ve only read the first four books in the series, but it’s already the best continuing series I’ve ever come across. The rest of the O’Brian books could suck (they won’t) and I’d still think these first four are some of the most magnificent things I’ve ever read.

** Okay, so this is the cheat. But it is a single book, and if I started picking my favorite works of Shakespeare, 20% of this list would be Lucky Bill. Besides: I say to you honestly that I think the Riverside Shakespeare is the one book that ought to be in every home. It isn’t a holy book, so it isn’t limited to believers in one faith or another. You need only believe in stories and that language can be beautiful.

Interesting list. I guess I need to read some more books as I haven't read half of the titles.
Also a bit of an advertisement for Owen King's forthcoming novel.
