No you are not being overly picky. I would ask for a new case.
And WHY do these people send things in the mail not properly packaged??? Seriously, they know they are sending them to collectors. Just ranting, bad packaging drives me insane. You get all excited when you see the package has arrived only to have your heart broken when you open it up.

I agree completely. I purchased Heart-Shaped Box on eBay from a guy in England. It arrived just wrapped in brown paper, no packaging at all, with a smashed corner (amazingly that was all). I emailed him and he said, "The slipcase is the shipping box."!!! He said I could return it and he'd just resell it and get what I'd paid. He did refund the shipping costs though.

First off, welcome to the site.:rose:

Incredible that was the response from the seller.
Packaging requirements often vary by size and value of the book, but a book in a padded or plain envelope is likely to be damaged.

I'm thinking of ordering a wooden case for both Heart.. and Horns. They're both inscribed to me and very dear to me. It would be cheaper than gettting a traycased or even slipcased version of each book off Ebay and it would look cool as hell and it'd be very unique.

Dolan
05-24-2010, 07:56 PM
I was a visitor of the message board there when it first started wayyyy back when. Honestly, sometimes I go through stages where I find it hard to even keep up on this one.

It's always terribly sad when message boards close - those of you who remember dt.net know how special that one was to me... Gosh... those were the days. The sense of community I had there was overwhelming... so many friends there. Most of which carried over here, but some didn't.

I certainly do not want to make it seem like there isn't a sense of community here, because there absolutely is (even more so that I haven't given the chance to explore) and I am so thankful for this board. Getting the email from Matt to join this board before it opened was an incredible honor. I just think times were different for me then. Collecting was easier. Money was more abundant... it wasn't about how much a book was. It was about how much longer I needed to wait for it to end on eBay.

Anyway - maybe this post should be in the stream of consciousness thread but I just wanted to comment how sad it is to lose a message board that people hold dear and I am sad to hear that Joe had to close it. With that, I am sure Joe will have time to focus more on writing and for that I am thankful...

Yes but there are no details about the book. Is it all six graphic issues in one HC or what. A picture would help out but I know there isn't one yet.

Yes, it will contain all six issues of the comic in one hardcover, just like the regular graphic novel that will be available. It also will contain the full script for the series, and if you buy the limited or lettered, you get extra artwork along with the signatures (those won't be in the Trade from SP).

good to know others are curious.... but I like to figure out these things for myself, so I didn't read through this thread.

I've had the books (several limiteds and signed firsts) taunting me for a while, but I waited until my girlfriend finished with her unsigned copy so I could read it ... and I'm finally doing so. I read two koontz and one other book while waiting for her to finish Horns.... it was driving me crazy.

anyway, in case it wasn't posted, here's the song's lyrics:

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

.--. .-.. . .- ... . -.. / - --- / -- . . - /-.-- --- ..-
.... --- .--. . / -.-- --- ..- /--. ..- . ... ... / -- -.-- / -. .- -- .
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
.--. .-.. . .- ... . -.. / - --- / -- . . - /-.-- --- ..-
.... --- .--. . / -.-- --- ..- /--. ..- . ... ... / -- -.-- / -. .- -- . , oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)

I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
(woo woo, woo woo)

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me
(who who, who who)

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay
(woo woo, who who)
.--. .-.. . .- ... . -.. / - --- / -- . . - /-.-- --- ..-
.... --- .--. . / -.-- --- ..- /--. ..- . ... ... / -- -.-- / -. .- -- . , oh yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
(who who, who who)
.--. .-.. . .- ... . -.. / - --- / -- . . - /-.-- --- ..-
.... --- .--. . / -.-- --- ..- /--. ..- . ... ... / -- -.-- / -. .- -- . , oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
(woo woo, who who)

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint
(who who, who who)

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
(woo woo)
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah
(woo woo, woo woo)
.--. .-.. . .- ... . -.. / - --- / -- . . - /-.-- --- ..-
.... --- .--. . / -.-- --- ..- /--. ..- . ... ... / -- -.-- / -. .- -- . , um yeah
(who who)
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
(woo woo, woo woo)

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
(woo woo)

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name

PS I second Tom's request for a collection thread :)

Sorta of Joe, but only partially.

My final gift from his editor prior to leaving HarperCollins was a copy of Stories. My final gift from his editor prior to leaving HarperCollins

Isn't his editor Jennifer Brehl (Hill and Gaiman's editor)? Didn't hear she was leaving- that is kind of big news. Do you have anymore details?

Ron

I left Harper, not her. Needless to say, I'm not going to be able to get nearly as many ARCs and such as was able to in the past :(

For another publisher or to something different?

Something different. I'm a SQL/.NET developer, so I have a broad range of "applicability", not something specific to publishing. The economy is not good for anyone, and seems to be hitting the publishing industry extra hard. 2 days after I left Harper, they laid off another guy from my group. Even person down, they still had to cut another. The group went from 6 developers to 3 in 6 months. I saved someones job by leaving, but another was still cut. I wasn't feeling that great about security, not to mention that i had received no raise for 3 years.

I spent close to 10 years in the US Air Force. A developer job a local Army installation became available and I jumped at it. Salary is a bit more than 50% higher than was I was making at Harper. That in itself is huge, but the rest of the benifits also enticed me. Because of my military time, I'm walking in the door with almost 10 years credit towards retirement. They offer a real salary pension in addition to a 401k type plane with a 5% match. Was just something I needed to do to further my career.

I just read "Horns" in less than 24 hours. I haven't read a book that fast and continuously since the first Dark Tower book when I first discovered it. It was good that it was less than 400 pages long because I was getting hungry and my eyes were beginning to itch. LOL

I have also read "Heart Shaped Box" and the Ghost stories book when they first came out. I am impressed, and as a loooong-time fan of Dad, (I read Carrie when it was new and was hooked forever on the King style), I dare to say I have discovered a chip off the old block. Not the same, but a VERY good storyteller. I would love to see more of Ig in future stories, his character was so easy to identify with and I was sad when it ended. MORE! (she demanded greedily...)

Randall Flagg
08-11-2010, 05:47 PM
I devoured 'Horns' myself. I
<----------(sheepishly feels guilty) never read 'Heart Shaped Box' when it debuted, I started it 2 days ago, and treat it like a fine dessert-limit ~50 pages per day...I want it to last. I am loving it.

I enjoyed Heart-shaped Box a lot more. Horns was a solid effort and some parts were really great but I didn't feel like it was as good as HSB.

I'll probably order the key on Friday. I had the first two hardcovers signed by Joe in Toronto and it would make sense to get the matching key(s). I snagged the 3rd hardcover today. I didn't start reading it yet but I work tomorrow and I'll probably devour it during downtime.

My report about the Bookpremiere in Berlin 05.10.10 Otherland Bookshop
This bookshop is specialised in Crime Horror Fantasy Fiction

I was realy early in the Bookshop, and i was lucky to become a place 1,5 m away from Joe Hills place in the first set.
The Host of the evening was the lektor of the book Andy Hahnemann. Joe Hill and Hannes Riffel the translator of Teufelswerk-Horns, who is also the co owner of the Otherworld bookshop each are reading two long passages from the book...

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/742/medium/PICT2093.JPG
Then, comes the q+a part, but like often the public was realy shy, Joe Hill uses his HORNS, he have some, he says always when the public was shy, he uses the horns to aerate the public. 1-2 questions are comming,,,,, then nothing....

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/742/medium/PICT2101.JPG
And then... I ask Joe Hill about his upcoming Projects...
Joe Hill say“s there are 3 projects. Locke+Key takes a LOOOONGER time,,, for more YEARS.
He is also involved in the upcoming Locke+Key TV series,
and he started an new Book, but he says he is realy SLOW....

After this part, it was time to make some pics, then JH starts to sign. I wait, becaus i have the most books:rock:
Joe Hill forgets his own privat book and some pages, 2 other from the audience see that, and we all smile.... Nice souvenier:cool:. But,,, damn i“am to honest, i told Mr Riffel
that Joe Hill forget his “personal stuff“.
When i wait, i ask Mr Riffel, if he have maybe something special for me, an he gives me
3 Promo Poster, direkt from the Bookshop window.
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/742/medium/PICT2116.JPG

Then, when Joe Hill starts to sign my books, i say at first that i“ am realy sorry that he must sig so much books, but MOST of them are for other collectors, i say some names, well known from JH. I talked whith JH when he signs my 20+ books and my 3 poster, and i sayed to him i“ am realy thankful for his hard work, he doodled every book, several differend, he change his sig pen sometimes. (all 3 Poster are diff. signed) (all 3 Black-Box German sc - 20 century Ghost“s are with diff. doodles)
Mr Hill says that it“s realy hard work:wtf: to sign and doodle some books.

Joe Hill was realy friendly, and it was a beautiful 2 hrs bookpremiere event at the Otherland bookshop in Berlin.
Nice experience.

He signs me a lot lot lot of books.....

I WISH I could find one for $100. I think the cheapest I've seen on eBay is one out there now for $175. Usually they list for $300 and up - whether they sell is a different story.

Personally I would consider $100 a great price for the 500-copy hardcover S/L edition of 20thCG.

The somewhat limited first edition paperback certainly must sell for less, although it isn't a cheap paperback.

The more limited (only 200 copies) edition that has both the author and artist sigs sells for over $400.

An excerpt from the latest PS Publishing newsletter ...

And while you're doing that, watch out for these forthcoming titles:

* Greentown Redux by Ray Bradbury (Stanza Press poetry collection)
* The Excesses Of Youth by Steven Erikson
* Trapped In The Saturday Matinee by Joe R. Lansdale
* Slave Girls of Gunpowder by Joe Hill
* Ghoul Warning by Brian Lumley (Stanza Press poetry collection)

... and many many more!

VERY EXCITED!!!

Did you know that Joe Hill is writing another comic book serie called THE CAPE? (based on his short story)

http://www.cablechronicles.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/thecape1a.jpg

The 1st issue was getting published today (22/12/2010) by IDW Publishing
FIRST LOOK: THE CAPE #1
Joe Hill’s The Cape will arrive in stores on Dec. 22 from IDW Publishing. The issue is written by Joe Hill and Jason Ciaramella, with art and covers by Zach Howard.
Here’s how IDW describes the issue:
« Locke & Key: Keys to the Kingdom takes a month break in December, but in its place is another Joe Hill extravaganza! This special one-shot takes Hill’s short story from his best-selling short-story collection 20th Century Ghosts and adapts it to comics! The Cape will walk you along the fence of childhood innocence, and then throw you face first into a brick wall. »
Joe Hill’s The Cape will be 32 pages and will cost $3.99.

Took some pics of my Joe Hill stuff while getting a pic of the remarque in my LSOE book. Most everything is limited to 200 or less...though Heart Shaped Box is the 1,300 limited one and the Horns one isn't the 200 limited one...grrrr!! The last little chapbook I got today and is limited to only 150 which is cool. Also I have the #95 reserved of The Very Best of New Horror Limited and Deluxe (which has 20th century ghosts in it) to match #95 that I already have of 20th Century Ghosts. If anyone has any other #95 Joe Hill items, I will trade for my other number stuff. :)

Need to resize the pics! They were mammoth! doh!!

For my fellow Joe Hill fans, from his website:

"HORNS will be out in trade paperback next month, and to promote it, we’ve cooked up a deal with the devil (hur hur hur). I’m going to sign and doodle a 1,000 bookplates, and while supplies last, you can get yourself one. All you have to do is preorder a copy of the book, and send your proof of purchase to joehill@harpercollins.com with HORNS BOOKPLATE in the subject line. You must also include your MAILING ADDRESS in the email. Only one per household. Satanically easy, right?

What qualifies as proof of purchase? A scan or photo of a receipt works. Or, if you order from an online retailer, just forward your receipt from them. If you have safety concerns, feel free to delete any personal info from your receipt (although neither Amazon or Barnes & Noble include your credit card info in their receipts, so there’s not a lot to worry about there – they do include mailing addresses, but of course you have to provide that anyway). Hell, we’d probably accept a photo of you standing next to a bookseller, the dude holding your money, and grinning. That’s all there is to it.

Thanks guys and I hope you have fun with muh book.

(Update, 1hr later: Note that for the time being, the bookplate offer only applies to US preorders of the HarperCollins Trade Paperback of HORNS. But if I can arrange a similar deal for the Gollancz/Orion paperback, I will.)"

Patrick
02-16-2011, 10:41 AM
Very cool of Joe. Thanks for the alert, Eric.

My concern with preordering is that the big booksellers don't pack well for shipping and you're never guaranteed to received a first printing. Hmm.

Gris

I wonder if I qualify. Either way, I sent a receipt. Thanks for the heads-up ELazansky.

Patrick, weird thing is that the book is due for release 3/8, but my internal order says in-stock. They're usually not marked in-stock for us until they actually release.

MLG
02-16-2011, 11:01 AM
My understanding is that the bookplate is going to be sent from the publisher. If the book you receive from the preorder is not acceptable, for any reason you can return it and apply the bookplate to a book that you purchase as well. Joe also stated that it can be a preorder from a local bookseller. I actually tried to order from Powell's since I go to the store frequently but they did not have the paperback available for preorder yet. I am actually debating not putting it in the book at all. I got a pair of horns from Joe at his Powell's reading and he signed them. I may frame the horns with the bookplate. I will decide when I see the actual item.

MLG
02-16-2011, 11:04 AM
Gris - Make sure the book you ordered is the Trade Paperback. Barnes & Noble had a paperback listed as in stock and another listed as available for preorder. It states that to qualify you need to order the Trade Paperback from the publisher running the promotion. I believe the Europe paperback is already out and will not qualify.

Gris

From His website:
So far I’ve doodled and scribbled on about 200 and am having waaaay too much fun with this damned thing. Decided to write 6 short stories about the devil on 6 of these bookplates. No idea who will get ‘em. 40-word short stories are amoooosing. I’ve got one written so far, and the second one figured out.
