I also cancelled my direct order with SP and asked Kim to set one aside for me. When the time comes, I'll add some more books to my order and have them shipped all at once.

I don't have any Hill books right now, nor have I ever read any. With Suntup's Horns and SubPress's Full Throttle, I'd say I'm off to a good start, though.

Speaking of which, what is the best/best looking/most complete way to get the Locke & Key series? I'm interested in that, but all the different versions and collections and one-shots confuse the heck out of me. Any advice would be much appreciated!

If you're just looking to read it, hit the library. If you're looking to collect them, that's a whole different ball of wax. Marco's site is the perfect resource for all things Hill. The editions that Sub Press put out are really nice.

Be careful. Subterranean stopped without completing the series.

Speaking of Hill this announcement of all of these new comics he's involved with has me utterly confused.
Marco, is there a comprehensive list on your site or can someone list them here? There were so many my head practically exploded.
I want the ones he's writing and release dates.

Thank you!
Hi Lori,
At this moment Joe’s working on a couple of comics series/issues:
1. Marvel Comics #1000 (1 page story), release 28 August
2. Locke & Key: Dog Days, ‘regular’ one-shot containing two new shorts (one of the Nailed It which was a con exclusive at SDCC), release 16 October
3. Hill House Comics, series of 5 issues with a continuing story by Joe and he also wrote the script for issues #1 and #5. Issue #1 release 30 October
4. St Holmes, new comics series but not much details known yet
5. New Locke & Key series called World War Key with story arc 1 Revolution, no other details known yet

Additional details and images on my site in the COMICS section ;)

Are there plans to release the Dog Days book in HC? All I can find available for pre-order is the Kindle edition.

Don’t know. Some of the previous one-shots were collected in Heaven & Earth so IDW may do another one like that, but for know it’s just a one-shot comic available in every comic book store

Lori. Dave at Overlook Connection is offering the full series run of The Hill House comics. They'll mail once the series is complete. I can get a link for you if needed. I'm gonna go this route and get the variants of course

Edit: I also found a site where a lot of the variants can be ordered of the Marvel comic. That one's a killer for a completist!

Had a great conversation with a friend regarding the upcoming Hill events and collecting him. The quote below from the conversation really sums it up for me as a Hill collector.

And forget what others think about us Hillions. Very few of us go to see Joe and get things signed because we plan to retire on the sale of the items. Except for a few special items, most of his stuff will never be in the same category as his dad. We appreciate him for who he is and for who he is not. He is Joseph Hillstrom King and he is his fathers son, but he is not his father. While King may belong to the whole world, right now Joe belongs to us.

I joined as well. I'm slowly realising what a slippery slope (or hill, if you will :P) I find myself on, now that I'm trying to build a collection of Joe's books. Lucky for me, I'm not much of a completist, so one (signed) edition of each book is enough for me. By my count, that's only eight books I need, which is doable...

I'm the most casual of Joe Hill collectors, and even I'm afraid of the slope I'm sliding down. Even if you just restrict yourself to the novels and short story collections (which I'm trying to do), there are a lot of limited editions out there.

I am selling my Locke & Key key collection from Skeleton Crew Studios. I had though about building a display case to display them, but I just don't have the space to display them. I will not break the collection up, so please don't ask to just buy the ones signed by Joe. Either I sell the entire lot at once or they stay on my shelf. All keys come in the original black bags with key tags. Here is what I have:

Hi I am reading my first Joe Hill book (The fireman). Only about 260 pages or so into it. I haven't read any of this thread, because it is so long, but just had a quick question and apologize if it has been asked/answered/discussed already.

There is a character in the book named Harold Cross. I am wondering if this character is an homage to Harold Lauder and Nadine Cross from The Stand.

Thanks,
Mike

It's intentional. Hill by his own admission dropped a number of Stand references. For example the deaf kid is named Nick, a reference to Nick Andros.

Compared to all of his other writing, the comics, novels, novellas, short stories and even his forwards/introductions, The Fireman is shockingly bad, like from a different author.
I chalk it up to a bad at bat and no more, there are 3 stories in a row in Full Throttle that are truly amazing

Yes, yes you are

I posted this on FB on the Joe Hill Fan Club page, but I figure someone here might be able to help too...

I've been looking into the two different S/L editions of NOS4A2 to determine which one I eventually want to buy. I was hoping you could clear some things up for me...

- The SubPress edition has illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez; are these illustrations also in the IDW edition?

- The SubPress edition includes Wraith. Is this the prose story that the IDW prequel comic is based on? If so, is that story available anywhere else?

- Which of the two editions would you recommend?

In short, I want as many illustrations and as much of the prose as possible. As far as I can tell, that means NOS4A2 (the novel), Wraith (the prose story) and Wraith: Welcome to Christmasland (the graphic novel). Am I missing anything?

Thanks!

- The SubPress edition has illustrations by Gabriel Rodriguez; are these illustrations also in the IDW edition? No/ it's different artist.

- The SubPress edition includes Wraith. Is this the prose story that the IDW prequel comic is based on? Yes and it's exclusive to SubPress

- Which of the two editions would you recommend? SubPress. also because the wraith is in prose and just beautiful edition overall.

the wraith graphic novel that is in the IDW limited is also available as a trade edition.

No idea on the reference but do have to say don't judge Joe on that book. It's by far his worst so if you like it, it only goes up from there and if you don't then give Horns a try before you give up on him

I think it's a cool concept but I was told to not start with The Fireman because no one seemed to like it. I'm reading HORNS now and loving it.

Completely agree with Josh here. If you never read The Fireman, you'd be none the worse for it.

Compared to all of his other writing, the comics, novels, novellas, short stories and even his forwards/introductions, The Fireman is shockingly bad, like from a different author.

I just finished this book last night. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that didn't like it that much.

It wasn't even like it was a really bad story or bad writing. It just drug on FOR-EV-ER!

http://giphygifs.s3.amazonaws.com/media/hEwkspP1OllJK/giphy.gif

This book probably could've been and should've been about half the length that it was.

Luckily this wasn't my first Joe Hill book. I've read most of his other stuff and enjoyed it. But this one he seems to channel his dad with a case of "diarrhea of the word processor".

Chiming in to agree that of his novels it's likely my least favourite. I didn't hate it, but I found I struggled to want to finish it out. I set it down more than once and wasn't compelled by the climax. I'm looking forward to Full Throttle though, I enjoyed Strange Weather.

Months ago, someone on Facebook mentioned that the slipcase for Earthling’s edition of The Scarlet Gospels was a perfect fit for Goblin. So I emailed Paul and asked if he could sell me one. He made it clear that there weren’t many extras and he needed them for the book they were made to hold. But he found one. It’s covered in what Paul refers to as goblin skin.

Sorry, Lori. Took my old ass some time to recover from nearly 16+ hours in a vehicle! It was well worth it though and I had a blast! Everyone was great and asked great questions. I can't wait until the next event. I've decided I'll travel no matter the distance to see Joe again.

Thanks to Shac's daughter and my wife, I was able to get a total of 9 items signed, including one for my cousin who I'm going to surprise. I could have gone back through the line again but it probably would have been close to another hour wait. We were hungry and tired from the drive so decided the items I got signed were enough. It gave me a whole new appreciation for what Joe does for his fans. He probably signed close to 500 items at this event alone. The man is a machine and must be exhausted after each event.

Huge thanks to Jason (third from the left in the photo above) and his wife Katie for carting us to and from the event from our hotel. As well as dining with us after. An unforgettable evening without a doubt!

Sorry, Lori. Took my old ass some time to recover from nearly 16+ hours in a vehicle! It was well worth it though and I had a blast! Everyone was great and asked great questions. I can't wait until the next event. I've decided I'll travel no matter the distance to see Joe again.

Me as well.

With shipping to Canada and USD to CAD conversion it's like $300, which is just a bit too rich for me at the moment. We'll see if there are any available after pay day.

I just remind myself that Paul may be announcing another book this year. And I have a signed/inscribed first edition Full Throttle. And at some point PS will be doing more SK editions and CD will be doing Pet Sematary and SST will continue rolling with the Lansdale collections and Earthling will be doing some lettered editions for which I'm on a waitlist. And then it gets easier.

Being that I have divested myself of 99% of my King signed and gift edition stuff to focus on Joe and some other authors, ordering the new FT s/l was kind of a no brainer for me. Of course being able to make payments through Camelot made a huge difference.🙂

You prefer the stock photo of a motorcycle on the UK cover to the artwork on the US edition? I actually thought the UK edition was a little lackluster looking...

First world problems and all that but I was a little frustrated at a recent signing where Hill would only sign Full Throttle and for anything else you would have to go to back of the line afterwards. Usually it's just "I'll sign 2-3 of whatever and then you go to the back of the line" to prevent someone from bringing twelve books or something. He would sign up to three copies of Full Throttle upfront so it wasn't a time issue either. Maybe it was a publisher request or the store trying to sell more copies. I only brought one other book and a comic but it was getting late so I just left.

If you went to Nashua NH. That was the bookstore rule. He still signed 3 items per person. If one was full throttle. Line ended at 10:02 pm. He signed for everyone and never stopped until he was done. Over 300 people in attendance. I ended up helping his beautiful wife face over 100 more books for the store after he signed over 800 books. I told him to keep it up after he gets famous. Lot Guy said that did not come out the way I thought it in my head. Largest crowd I have seen at a hill event yet

You could still get your other items done, you just needed to have a copy of the new book at first to get in the line. That is pretty standard for most book signings that I have ever done. After all, the author and the bookstore want to sell the new book. Joe took care of the rest of the items at the end of the signing. Still a nice guy.

This is news to me, the sign and the workers all indicated if you wanted anything *but* Throttle signed you would have to go to the end of the line after he signed it. I’ve been to several of his signings and this was the first time this happened. I wasn’t blaming Joe, though.

I was watching from the beginning to the end. Most people put throttle on top and the other two underneath. But you are right. That was the worker’s narrative. Joe did not care! And I know you were not blaming joe. But if you did not have throttle. One worker was telling people to go to end of line

I was at the Nashua NH event. I was also confused by the wording of 3 books signed, but I only brought 2 other books with me and he graciously signed the other 2 right after signing Full Throttle. The way it was worded by the woman working there did make it sound like you could only get Full Throttle signed, but people in front of me were giving him other books so I did the same. Plus I was near the front and had he chose not to sign it I would have most likely left with just Full Throttle.

As for the event, I thought Joe was highly entertaining. I loved hearing his stories. There were tons of people there, the most out of any of his events that I've been to in the past. Maybe he's just becoming more popular though. The first event I went to was for Horns, and there were probably about 30-40 people there? I'm not sure how many were at this one but the place was packed. I felt so bad for all the people that got stuck standing, and I was surprised they didn't have more chairs for everyone considering there was a lot of room to put some out. Maybe they just weren't used to hosting such a big event.

Saw Joe in Bangor on the 24th of Oct. This was about the 5th time maybe? Same stories, different venue but always a good time. I had Full Throttle inscribed and my Horns AGE. I wanted a doodle in Horns but I think he was tired and since he didn't offer it up, I didn't ask. This was my friends first time seeing him and she has a daughter named Harper so I told her she should get a copy of The Fireman and have it inscribed to Harper. He doodled the phoenix in it for her, it was cute. For my Full Throttle I asked him to inscribe the line from Late Returns about reading books being like trying on other people's lives. I had it in my head all week and when I finally got up there drew a total blank on it. It finally came to me. Lol. I also asked him about the original ending to NOS4A2 since he told the story about it and his mom at the King/Hill event. I actually liked it better than how he decided to end it but I didn't tell him that ;)
For those that want to know(SPOILERS if you haven't read it yet!) he was going to have Wayne come into the bedroom holding a knife with a creepy Christmasland grin on his face, sit down on the bed next to Lou and say Merry Christmas. The End. I'm not telling it as good as he did but that's the gist. How creepy would that have been!

Thank you for that info. I was curious as to the different ended that he mentioned in Boston, I like it.

CyberGhostface
11-01-2019, 06:51 AM
Yeah that's the alternate ending in the Subterranean Press edition. The story is he was committed to including that until Tabitha told him to change it.

It's an interesting idea but it reminds me of King's story about the original ending to Misery when it was just a novella where Annie kills Paul and binds the novel with his skin. As King says, it's one thing to end a novella like that it's another to have the reader committed to seeing a character through over the course of a full novel and pull the rug up from them like that. I think having a huge novel like NOS4A2 ending on such a grim note with all of Vic's sacrifice being for naught would have been like that.

It seems to me that the address verification should be followed by a timely shipping of the item. :orely: If it takes weeks, the address could potentially change.

I heard back from Jeff…for those interested, the cost of a slipcase for the UK edition plus shipping to the US is around 30 pounds, or (converted) about $40.

Hey All- Any opinion on the value of a Subpress HSB Deluxe 2nd print? And, was this actually a smaller print one than the 1st? Can't tell because mine is sealed, but the receipt says I paid $85.00 for it, and I seem to remember that the 1st was 500 copies and the 2nd- 300?

There were 200 deluxe copies of the 1st printing and 100 of the 2nd (as well as 300 of the ‘regular’ limited edition of the 1st printing and 400 of the 2nd printing). As for the value, I’d say somewhere between $ 150 and $ 200

As for the value, I’d say somewhere between $ 150 and $ 200I was waiting for Marco to chime in.

Check out his website. Really good reference tool.

Right- thanks! Man, that edition was confusing even back then. Hard to keep straight now. But, that's where your great resource comes in- thanks!

I don’t think anything’s been announced yet.

No worries. I'll keep my eyes peeled. =)

Of course subject to change: latest news is that Joe’s working on two novels one of them called Up The Chimney Down. One of these was due to be released September 2021 but that date has been postponed. Guess the focus is on the Locke & Key comics.
Keep an eye out on my website or subscribe to my newsletter if you don’t want to miss any Joe Hill news :)http://www.joehillbibliography.com

Thanks, Marcol! Very cool site! I'll be checking it in the future.

I thought Locke & Key was done. Wow! I need to catch up! LOL
