IIRC they had 50 bone mallets that went along with the limited edition which were doled out randomly.

Me too. That bone mallet would be really cool. I wonder if they are just randomly put in with the books?

CyberGhostface
10-20-2013, 08:59 AM
Yeah they had a surplus of bone mallets so they just randomly put it in select LEs. If my math is right you have a 1 in 15 chance of getting one.

Personally in regards to the book itself I think it looks beautiful and like a "special edition" should with the framing and everything. Kind of makes me sad that Rodriguez was taken off The Shining after seeing his work here.

Is that the white slipcase that Tomas was talking about making? Would make sense since the book is white-ish ... I thibk the color is probably supposed to be bone. Now that would make a sweet slipcase/traycase ...something completely with the look and feel of bone. A bone traycase.

I want one!

Here is my 2 cents: by the time I decided that I wanted this book, it was sold out at both SubPress and CamelotBooks. I e-mailed Bill at SubPress asking to put me on a "waiting list" and learned that there is no waiting list at SubPress. I email to Kim at CamelotBooks with the same request and was told that I was put on the waiting list but there were quite a few people in front of me. To my surprise, a week ago Kim asked me if i still want the book and that's how I got it.

Too bad I could not do the same with Clash Of the King by GRRM. THIS is going to be a battle of fast clicking by the end of October...

As far as ACoK... they printed 52 more than they normally do (500 instead of 448 ), so you might have a better chance, plus no rights of ownership are involved. Also some set owners have issues with them reprinting the first two books so there will be those copies for sale.

That's great that you are getting a numbered edition. Kind of makes you wonder ... the numbered editions were sold out. Then they offered the dinged copies that were numbered. So what happened? Suppose 750 people each ordered one numbered copy. 10 copies came in dinged. What are those 10 people getting? Are they getting a PC copy to replace the damaged edition, and is SP then turning around and reselling the damaged copy?

becca69
10-29-2013, 12:19 PM
I was wondering the same thing. What if someone ordered a numbered copy to match their other Joe Hill books and that number was damaged... do they take that out of the rotation and replace with a PC and renumber it? Do they hold back a percentage of books for sale in the first place?

Maybe you get copy 750.1, an "updated" version.
I wouldn't sweat about it. If you paid $125 and get a mint numbered copy then I think that you should be pleased. Certainly after seeing the finished product I think $125 is good...and $75 is GREAT!

They said a while ago that there would only be eight (I think) color plates, so they didn't exactly mislead people. And Rodriguez was busy finishing up Locke & Key at the time. It was also delayed because Hill was going over the bonus novella and making corrections.

mikeC
10-30-2013, 11:54 AM
I guess I might share some of the blame but I bought it based on this:

"It also includes an alternate ending to the novel, as well as illustrations, in both black and white and color, by Hill’s long-term collaborator on the award-winning comic, Locke & Key, Gabriel Rodriguez."

Its doesn't say how many, granted but 6-8 is pretty weak for a 700 page book.

Why didn't they just include the slipcase with the book?

CyberGhostface
11-06-2013, 03:43 PM
There were no plans initially; I contacted them way back and asked if it was included and they said no. I imagine they decided to make one after there was a bit of a demand and others were going to be making unofficial slipcases for it.

As for why they didn't initially, I don't know. Again I don't know what the costs cover but I just remember that CD's IT was longer by a couple of hundred pages and had more color plates and still managed to include a slipcase at the same cost. The only thing I can think of is NOS4A2 had a much smaller printing (less than 800 counting both editions whereas It had well over 3,000) so maybe that was a factor?

I think it was great they way Sub Press released the s/l NOS4A2 as a stand alone, without slipcase.
This way it allows those who maybe could not afford the book with the increase in cost needed to cover a traycase or slipcase. and or save to add one later. I think its a really good option for a signed numbered book. And the book itself is fantastic. Im sure the case will be a beautiful compliment.
I cant wait to order one for mine!:excited:

There are plenty books by bigger authors than Hill that came with a slipcase and cost less. Or they came without a slipcase but had smaller runs. Lovedeath by Simmons is $125 but has a 250 run + lettereds, which are also cheaper than Hill's. Simmons published 30+ books for major publishers.

The Passage didn't have a slipcase but was a $75 book. The Strain didn't just come with a slipcase, the entire book is a work of art. On Stranger Tides (basis for one of the Pirates of the Carribean) was $100 without a slipcase but it had a 200 print. Weaveworld gift edition was $75. These aren't unknown, young writers. They all have books with major publishers, have had movies based on their books, have won every award there is to win and their books are cheaper than Hill's.

Instead of saying that it's a great thing the slipcase wasn't included, shouldn't you be asking why wasn't the slipcase included with a $125 book? Especially considering that again, bigger names with smaller print runs have a) cheaper prices or b) came with a slipcase.

WeDealInLead

Two more recent examples, one is from SP: A Clash of Kings. 500 copies at $295 but it's actually TWO books in a slipcase, with 30+ illustrations.

There is also a three book set from Thunderstorm for $125. Print run of 333 copies. Granted, Brian Keene isn't hitting the NY Times bestsellers lists but he's a cult writer, his books sell out fast, hold value on eBay etc. and one of the writers in the set is this new kid on the block called F. Paul Wilson. Two of the three books in the set are brand new stories, not a reprint like NOS4R2.

I commend SP for their business sense. I don't have to like it, but why shouldn't they capitilize on the hype and get as much money as they can? That's great for them. But don't tell me that you as a customer think it's great that you got less for more. That makes no sense.

I don't think it's great? I've said a couple of times that I found it frustrating. I'm happy that they're releasing one now because I'm assuming that their mass-produced slipcase will be cheaper than the custom ones I've been looking into, but I'm still bothered by the initial absence.

Due to demand from our collectors, we are producing a Limited Edition slipcase for NOS4A2 by Joe Hill.

A slipcase is essentially a super nice way to protect your book and the book's dust jacket. We're using the same high-quality materials we have used for the novel. This case will feature an original illustration (likely of Charlie Manx, though we're still discussing possibilities) hot foil stamped on it.

We're selling these oversize slipcases for just $29.95, plus shipping

You know.....I've never really understood this. "protect your book" from what exactly? Most buyers of S/L edition books put them on a bookshelf and there they stay for months or years. When we do take them off the shelf we handle more carefully than your grandmother's old china or crystal. Sure you can read them but you have to take them out of the slipcase for that. I'm pleased that books sometimes come with a slipcase as part of the purchase price but I have never understood the whole aftermarket slipcase frenzy. And buying an aftermarket slipcase for a trade edition just seems like throwing money away to me. I cannot recall a single instance in my 30+ years of collecting books where something inadvertent happened to one of my books and I thought "Damn....if only I had bought a slipcase." I realize it is personal preference but heck.... are y'all's books really taking that much of a beating?

I've had issues when I lived in Florida. There are serious bugs down there and no matter what, you end up having to have pest control spray every month. I've had a few books that ended up with spots on the pages from this even though they were in a closed case or covered up. Not an issue now but stuff happens.

I live in Florida and you are absolutely correct. It doesn't matter what you do there are still bugs. I take out my books about once per month and dust. I check every volume on each page block. The silverfish will attach or the cockroaches will attach their egg sacks to your books. If you catch them immediately an eraser usually will remove any residue. If you don't they will spot your books. You might be able to sand the page block since the stain isn't deep but who wants to have to do that?

I live in Florida and since day 1 I've placed every book worth money in a Brodart archival quality zip-sealed bags. I then place the books in special archival quality boxes and place them in my closet. That way, they stay in fine "mint" condition forever. ;)

I cringe when I see people placing books they paid a lot of money for un-protected on a bookshelf. You never know what might happen.

I certainly understand living in high humidity areas and have dealt with my share of roaches (also called water bugs if they are in nicer homes). I lived for a while in Killeen, Texas. (BTW, I still can't believe King's editors, proofreaders, fact checkers, etc. let him get away with misspelling it as Kileen all the way through 11/22/63.) While there I took my copy of Straub's Ghost Story published by Hill House out of its slipcase and found a dead roach on the top page edges. I flicked it away and there was a small brown spot left behind where he died. But I think rather than protecting the book the slipcase actually promoted the damage by providing the "water bug" a dark place to go and die. So I don't think that a slipcase offers any protection from insects because surely they can crawl inside most normally fitting slipcases.

I'm not anti-slipcase by any means. I just think that selling them as protection is not a valid point.

Trade editions I definitely agree that slipcases are a bit of a waste given how mass produced they are but with LEs IMO it's just a case of "better safe than sorry".

Although a slipcase did come in handy for me once; when King went to UMass I brought my It SE along in a duffel bag (it was a tight fit so it didn't bounce around) but without a slipcase I probably wouldn't have felt the book was safe.

For me, I don't have a completely sun-free room. So if I can get a slipcase, I can put the book on shelf backwards with the spine towards the back. Gives me a little bit of fading protection. I don't buy them for all of the trade editions.

Neither do I. In Amarillo the average humidity seems to be around 15% which is not so good for our skin (it is really dry, especially in the winter) but seems perfect for books. No problems with mildew or insects very much. I have heard that over time glued bindings can dry out and crack but I've been here 25 years and have never had a problem with that.

I think that slipcases can and usually do enhance the cosmetic appearance books on a shelf. For a long time I used those little red sticky dots to mark the signed books. Pretty cheap solution to identifying the signed vs. unsigned.

Instead of saying that it's a great thing the slipcase wasn't included, shouldn't you be asking why wasn't the slipcase included with a $125 book? Especially considering that again, bigger names with smaller print runs have a) cheaper prices or b) came with a slipcase.

I'm not singling you out specifically, though I'm replying to your email: when people gripe about book costs, they never seem to take into account what the author is getting paid. I have no knowledge of the money side of any of these deals, but I do know that the cost of the book includes how much the author is being paid for the rights to publish that edition, as well as profit for the publisher. Maybe Joe Hill was paid more than Simmons was? Maybe he asked for more? Maybe he was offered more? That's between the publisher(s) and the author(s). But it's the one thing that buyers never seem to take into consideration when they're complaining about how much a book costs.

Actually, I understand that completely. You have to understand where I'm coming from. This book doesn't seem to have any of the qualities that book in that range usually have. This was $125 + $30 if you want the slipcase + shipping x 2. It's a nice looking book but when you look at it, do you see anything that is (physically) worth the extra cost? You're right, we don't know what the agreement is and what ammount we're talking about. I'm talking about the bottom line here and that is, you as a consumer got less. Another bottom line is, if people are happy, that's all that matters and don't let the grouchy ol' me get anyone down.

The quality of those look pretty good. Just too bad he can't add the author or book title to the case.

In this case, I don't mind the all-in product cost so much. However I find having to place a separate order and pay a separate extra shipping charge annoying. I like the concept some publishers use: In the original offering, you have two price points based on the choice of including or excluding a slipcase. Order and pay once, avoid double shipping charges, and move on.

So to those who've read it, what did you think of the bonus material in NOS4A2?

And for those who haven't, the comicbook Wraith is basically the same story with some new material thrown in.

So to those who've read it, what did you think of the bonus material in NOS4A2?

I read it a few days ago, and as I was with the novel, was blown away. Best thing I've read in months, chilling and absolutely absorbing -- and was just the bonus tack-on. If there's a better writer working the genre today, I don't know who it is. I hate to be such a Hill fanboy, but goddamn, he's good.

One odd thing I noticed in the bonus novella is that he periodically spoke in contractions, which, as we know from the novel, he doesn't do. Not sure why the difference, or whether or not it was even intentional on Hill's part.

CyberGhostface
11-14-2013, 04:47 PM
I think it's a shame Hill cut it out and that most people won't be able to read it (or even know about it). Plus even for people who do have it you'd have to handle a very expensive book to read it. I mean I get why he cut it out as it does take away the mystery of a number of things from the book but...

Also yeah I definitely think Hill's one of the best writers working today. He's in a class of his own.

I would definitely bet money on that for sure. Might be a while. Same for the locke and key series when its finally complete.
I think its better to have one omnibus and have joe sign it at an appearance.

From PS Publishing:
YOU KNOW, THERE WAS A TIME when I’d kind of decided I was going to pull the plug on the deluxe edition of Marie O’Regan’s and Paul Kane’s A Carnivale of Horror because the signing sheets had gone AWOL in a monstrously big way and I just could not face going back to those authors who had signed and asking them to do it again. And then, out of the blue, I got a message from Rio Youers (God bless ‘im, I say and by golly I do mean it) to say the sheets had turned up in his local Post Office. This was 23 August . . . around one entire year since they set off on their travels. So, like I say, prior to that email from Rio, I was all set to make the announcement and refund all the folks who had pre-paid (bless 'em). Since then, there was just Rio, Joe Hill and Tom Monteleone to do the job. Needless to say, I was a little nervous about these things going out in the mail yet again but they did. They finally wound up with Tom and he brought them across to Brighton for World Fantasy (Tom, I never bought you that beer, mate: next time, promise!)

It comes to about $75 delivered to US.

I was there for the FDNS signing a few years ago but they've moved since then. From the pics on their site looks like the new location is a bit bigger.
I went to a microbrew down the street from their old location - it used to be a bank. They have a huge walk-in safe next to the bar and an ornate ceiling. Heres a pic of one of the bartenders and the ceiling (the pic of the safe didnt come thru sigh). Same place?

Their beer is great, but one thing I loved originally was the label for the Shoal's Pale Ale which made me want to see if it was a real place:

http://www.worldofliquor.com/labels/P05577.jpg

While researching the area and label I found out this little nugget:

Their attention-grabbing name comes from Smuttynose Island, one of the isles of Shoals, a small archipelago of nine islands which lies nine miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Southern Maine. Today, a lone structure remains on the island: the Haley House (pictured on the Shoals Pale Ale label). Made infamous by the grisly murders which occurred there in 1873 in which two women were hacked to death at the hands of a crazed, axe-wielding fisherman. Recently, the murder weapon was unearthed, rekindling a macabre interest in the killings. Murder and mystery aside, there is today another reason to remember the Smuttynose name and that is the magnificent brews created by the Smuttynose Brewing Company.

We didnt have time for a tour but I thought of taking a trip to to the island. Sounds cool.

You know, it IS a cash cow, and the owners of the publishing rights are riding it like the mechanical bull at a redneck line dancing bar, but for one I am THANKFUL that we got to read one of the best stories to come out in comics in the past 20 years.

I can't afford to collect all the editions. I'm gunning for a signed sub press set, and even then getting them most often from half price sales at sub press or end of year sale from camelot.

Right now I have the trade Welcome to Lovecraft ( waiting to get signed when I meet Joe someday) and the S/N LE of Head Games. I wonder if Sub Press will finish their adaptation of the series?

I agree completely that it looks amazing. If I knew for a fact that they were going to not only make similar editions for volumes 3-6 AND go back and do Volume 1, I'd be more interested. I just don't want to get suckered into buying a one-off product just because it looks cool.

FYI...

This is the absolute cheapest I have yet to see the Omega&Alpha HC at $23.99 including the slipcase to hold all 6 books.

I asked Joe about the series (as Joe planned to write 4 Gunpowder novellas from the start) when I met him last May in the UK. ETA: I'm also very much looking forward to reading Lock & Key, as I've waited until it was done to start. I'm sure it will be great!

I asked Joe about the series (as Joe planned to write 4 Gunpowder novellas from the start) when I met him last May in the UK. He said he was planning to pick it up after the novel he's currently working on (The Fireman) is released but may start working on another novel first. So, the plans are there but don't expect it anytime soon.

Right on! Thanks for the info.

Here's a fun bit of my crossover interest in King/Hill collecting with my long time comic book and original art collecting! The following is the finished cover inks to Joe Hill's IDW comic, WRAITH #5 of 7 drawn by Charles Paul Wilson III, and the second image is how the comic cover will appear with its digital colors. Just received this cool Christmasland cover yesterday! Charles describes this cover as the Murder Playset cover - It reminds me of the old Highlights mags I read as a kid. This issue will come out in the next several months as issue #1 was just released. Charles is also responsible for all the interiors - I have a few panels from issue #1 to show if there is any interest . Enjoy!

Hi jon10g! I only have two more single panels from issue #1 of WRAITH that I am happy to put up - I'll also throw up his rough drafts for issue #5 - those are really cool, too! Although I hope to have more WRAITH material in the future, I only have other works by CPWII, that are unrelated to Joe. He is an extraordinary artist that I stumbled upon in my collecting travels right before he began to draw for a comic called STUFF OF LEGEND back in early 2009. He had his stuff up on Deviantart.com and I struck up an internet friendship with him and have purchased pages, covers and commissions either directly from him or his agent. I would suggest trolling around the internet to find his work, or I can PM you some sites to visit. Ultimately, the comic book/original art bug can bite you just as hard as the King and all things related bug! Seeking out friendships and contacts is a fun and best way to enjoy the hobbies!

Two panels:

Excellent. I have been tempted by some of the Dark Tower stuff but have very little room to hang stuff up. I would be very grateful if you could PM me with any sites that may sell Joe Hill comic related art.

Gauntlet Press has their info page up for Owen King's Double Feature. I was looking at getting this as an addition to my Joe Hill collection. Not for $750..

This limited edition includes a tip sheet drawn by bestselling author Joe Hill (Heart-Shaped Box, NOS4A2), an afterward by Harvey Award-wining author Scott Snyder (American Vampire, Batman), as well as deleted scenes and other bonus materials that expand on the world of the novel.

Note: Those purchasing the book from Gauntlet will receive a bookmark with Joe Hill’s tipsheet art signed by Owen King.

500 copy numbered edition signed by Owen King and Scott Snyder $65

Slipcase for numbered edition $25

52 copy traycased lettered edition (with bonus material not in the numbered edition) signed by Owen King, Joe Hill and Scott Snyder $750

I think the general opinion here is that he's an interesting and accomplished writer. His novels are pretty good (I especially liked his first, Heart-Shaped Box) and his short stories are great!

* edit: by the way, if you're interested I have a few nice Joe Hill books for sale :)

I loved the book Horns. I collect his books because he is SK's son. I think he will be around for along time, I like his writing and i could get on the ground floor of collecting an author I really like (in person) and as a writer. THE CAPE is awesome. Start with that short story.
