Except from my review about NOS4A2 : "NOS4A2 is a very creative horror novel, and the idea is brilliantly orchestrated by the author. [...] Once started, i didn't want to leave NOS4A2 aside, even for going to sleep. Highly recommended."

Sorry - I think the link I posted was the initial one to set it up and enter your email - which in turn they reply with the actual video link. It was entertaining. He referenced gaiman a lot. He also mentioned that he's hitting two stores on the Wednesday they are in SF - he's doing a reading with John scalzi that night - one at 6pm the other at 8 pm (the 8pm was the one originally on his schedule me thinks). Too bad I'm working that night and will catch him the following night in Petaluma.

Maybe you should come out to Petaluma too? It sounded like he was excited for SF - and it coincided with Scalzi's tour. I imagine it might run a bit late. On his Facebook page it stated it starts at 730

SORRY FOR THE CAPS - BUT I HAVE A HUGE SURPRISE - HUGE:smile_002:
PM ME IF INTERESTED
okay enough caps - I could sell this info for a lot more but I won't:)

did i peak your interest?

That's not many. With a different ISBN, these should go quickly.

it might have a little something to do with a certain book that hit the bookstores today...i will hang by the computer for a little while - might continue reading a certain book - but then i will be going for a run shortly - need to burn off my jitters...it's like it were christmas morning or something....although I am jewish - but still (my wife isn't and hence the tree/bush and menorah around holiday times).

Also it might be helpful to list the bookstores that have already been contacted - to avoid people calling the same store - since their stock would not be available. I will start:
A great good place for books - don't bother calling - all TEN copies are gone (i did not buy all ten...)

Okay I am tired of writing the same damn thing over and over again - so i am going to make this much more simple (for me at least)

I played Sherlock Holmes this morning, made a few phone calls, and managed to get the list of ALL (yes ALL) the indie bookstores where the pre-signed/tipped in copies of NOS4A2 were shipped

those are the ones with ISBN: 978006226623-1 - thanks to whomever had posted the back of the ARC with that info

anyway - if you are interested in received a copy of this list - I will forward it to you - just PM your email address and I will get it out - once I see it. All I ask is list the stores that you had called (unless you think that is unreasonable on this forum - RF?) - to save everyone here a few phone calls. The spreadsheet only lists the store name (public knowledge) - but you will need to search out the stores number.

Did I miss anything?

Was that a big enough SURPRISE???:lol1:

cit74
04-30-2013, 09:55 AM
Questions that have come up - cost: regular HC list price - so 28.99 plus tax/shipping.
One thing I do not know is if these were individual books or cartons - obviously that can make a big difference - so is it around 250 books or 250 cartons of 10 books each (2500) -

So i just called the bookstore in oakland - to see how many more signed copies they have - and they said they got in 40 signed books in stock today (but they might not be keeping them all - have no idea what that means) - but they should have 10 in stock (of the signed copies) even after those sell. So these stores apparently are able to order more of the signed copies.

So adjust the numbers accordingly - it is somewhere between 250-2500 (but closer to the 2500 mark)

My experience when getting the signed tipped in books in in dumps was that the ISBN#s were the same as the regular copies. I ordered a case of Dan Simmons Ilium in the ISBN that was different was for the case of books the individual books had the same number as the regular copies. my guess is that these books are the same way.

So I am guessing they are not quite as rare - but could still make a nice auction for haven fund...but i am sure someone can ask him how many he sat through and pre-signed at his book tour and he would give a rough number. Neil Gaiman said he had finished signing 10,000 sheets for his upcoming book....

Okay, just FYI for any Canucks here - I got a hold of the publisher and it doesn't appear any of the 2500 tipped-in copies will be showing up here in the Great White North, so a US seller is likely your only chance to get one directly.
Another item of note - i tried several stores before i finally managed to track one down, but i suspect it is because most sellers are not adding them to their inventory under the different ISBN number and not because they don't have any. i was starting to get discouraged until i found a smaller store where the seller was able to actually go and physically check the book to confirm it has a sticker on the front and a specially labeled tipped-in page. You might want to have whoever you call double check if they say they don't have any.

VJ books or powells seem to have received the most copies - you can try calling one of them or PM me for the whole list

They will almost certainly be third printings since we just ordered them a week ago. The publisher never told us they were going back to press, which is something our sales rep usually lets us know so we can grab the last of the first printings.

Has anyone received a second printing yet?

The honest answer is that it's a labor of love to buy and ship stuff like this to members-anyone at cost.
Just a decent shipping box and bubble wrap cost ~$2 per book.
Not to mention some members (not you) are a PITA when it comes to asking and then promptly paying....

Costco seems like a better deal - I had called ahead to the bookstore hosting Joe when I visit him - asked if they had 1st/1st HC - which they did and I just put one on hold - for the signing. That was copperfields in Petaluma, CA - if you are really desperate

So when I called the local bookstore (since i have to make a trip to Oakland to return the damage...gasp...signed NOS4A2) - i found out that they were only supposed to receive 10 books - not 10 cases of books (which they had) - some clerical error. But good for me - since they are keeping a case (the best looking one they still have) aside for me to go through this saturday and exchange the damaged copies. So for those overseas who are waiting for me to ship - you will have to wait a tad bit longer. So maybe that list was just the total number of books each store was supposed to receive? Or most likely it was an error on that sheet - 10 cartons instead of 1 carton...

That being said - if anyone else would like a copy I might be able to pick up 1 or 2 more (but only if they are in fine/fine shape - i won't grab any "dinged copies") after I exchange the 5 I have. So PM if interested - I will make a list (first come first served...) - but again no guarantees - I might not get any extra - just don't want to ruffle any feathers:mad1:

JH will sign every Nos4a2. He will likely (at the first venue), not sign other items until all copies of his new book are signed.
Who knows. The cool part is that the signing(s) are going to be different.

John Scalzi.

WTF, Is Hill going to fuck up the SF appearance with this?
Anyone know off hand what the time mark in the interview was where Hill mentions hitting 2 stores with Scalzi?

I'm afraid that the info mentioned is no longer accurate. Joe Hill will be at Booksmith at 7:30; John Scalzi will be at Borderland at the same time on the same evening.

I actually don't own an unsigned copy. My copies are all signed. All of my Joe Hill is signed with maybe the exception of the comics. I do have a ton of the comics signed too but all of my books are signed. Joe is just to easy to get things signed. It never occurred to me that an unsigned copy might actually be worth more. HMMMM.

"Prior to the 19th century, the deckle edge was unavoidable, a natural artifact of the paper making process in which sheets of paper were made individually on a deckle. The deckle could not make a perfect seal against the screen at the edges and the paper slurry would seep under creating a rough edge to the paper. The deckle edge could be trimmed off, but this extra step would add to the cost of the book. Beginning in the early 1800s with the invention of the Fourdrinier machine, paper was produced in long rolls and the deckle edge became mostly obsolete: although there was some deckle on the ends of the rolls, it was cut off, and the individual sheets cut out from the roll would have no deckle in any case.

With the appearance of smooth edges in the 19th century, the deckle edge slowly emerged as a status symbol. Many 19th century presses advertised two versions of the same book with a smooth and a higher priced deckle version, it suggested the book was made with higher quality paper, or more refined methods. This tradition carried forward into the 20th and 21st centuries. Today modern deckle is created by a purpose-built machine to create the appearance of a true deckle edge by cutting a smooth edge into patterns. Many modern readers are unfamiliar with the deckle edge and may see it as a defect; for example, Amazon.com has left notes to buyers that the deckle is not a flaw in the product."

Just in case anyone is curious:
It seemed (to me anyway) that there was a pretty heavy promotional effort behind the pre-ordering of signed copies from Water Street Books leading up to the release. Out of curiosity I asked them how many pre-orders they received and they replied that it was just under a thousand.

I actually thought it would have been a lot more.

(please wait to merge)

some of these photos are from Joe Hill's twitter-

So my wife and I went to the South Portland Books-a-Million Joe hill signing.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b64/different_seasons/20130511_133024.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/different_seasons/media/20130511_133024.jpg.html)

There were around a hundred people there. Everyone suddenly turns around and we see Stephen King there, standing in the back. Here he is in the center, back-

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b64/different_seasons/20130511_135708.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/different_seasons/media/20130511_135708.jpg.html)

He is immediately surrounded and he graciously takes photos with several people and signs several blank sheets of paper for people. My wife headed back with our copy of Road Rage but he told her "Sorry, I can't, I'm here to watch Joe".

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b64/different_seasons/1368295517526.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/different_seasons/media/1368295517526.jpg.html)

Joe does his talk, which was very funny and engaging.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b64/different_seasons/20130511_140542.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/different_seasons/media/20130511_140542.jpg.html)

Then he starts signing books. One of the people there was author John Connolly (sp?)-

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b64/different_seasons/1368308063283.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/different_seasons/media/1368308063283.jpg.html)

Then I notice the employees wheeling big bins of SK books into the back of the store. I knew what was coming so I got ready for a sprint. They reappeared with a huge number of signed paperbacks. I snagged quite a few, there was no limit.

Also present was Israel Skeleton, maker of the Keys from L&K-

I ended up with ten signed books-

Sorry, but I am so jealous that I won't merge this thread, I am simply going to delete it.

JK.
Still jealous, and will forever remain so, but also thrilled that a valued forum member was fortunate, and shared. I might not merge for a decade.
Congratulations again, .....you bastard...:rose:

I'm jealous, especially since I had to work late yesterday and couldn't go to Joe's signing in IL.

Dumb question, and if you don't want to share, I understand, but how much did they sell the signed King books for? Or were they just normal price? I've never been to a signing, so I apologize if my question seems stupid, lol. Thanks!

Joe genuinely is a really nice guy from what interviews with him I've watched online especially when he gets asked about living in his dads shadow
