During the first round of The Great Movie Tournament, please vote for up to six films you would like to move onto the next round. The top six films will be moving on. Keep in mind that the percentage of the vote a given film receives will determine its standing going forward.

The poll will run for seven days. Discussion is greatly encouraged!

The nominees are (please let me know if any video doesn't play for you):

I would be sad if T2 won this tournament but I don't think it will. I also don't think it will be Shawshank of Ryan. Hopefully something equally good but better and unexpected.

If it's Titanic or Showgirls. I will riot.

I do like both of those and I do expect Titanic to go pretty far just based on popularity and technical merit plus all the Oscars. I won't name any names yet, but one title in particular I'm thinking of was released in 1999.

I think the overall winner of the 90's Tournament will be (and should be) one of these films:

Terminator 2: Judgment Day
The Matrix
GoodFellas
The Shawshank Redemption
Schindler's List
Jurassic Park
Pulp Fiction

Hard list to argue with. The playoff rounds will be very very interesting.

I'm sure this won't be the first time we'll have this discussion so I'll make it a point to watch both.

Also slightly off topic - did you ever watch Apocalypse Now?

Yeah, I've got it. I just haven't popped it in yet. I ended up going to torrents and Netflix for so many movies, I don't look at my DVD shelf often enough.

So long as Goodfellas doesn't win the 90's tournament, I think I'll be fine with any film that wins.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation for that statement. Just kidding, that would be impossible.

Both Before Sunrise and Short Cuts deserve better. And over Can't Hardly Wait? Seems like a standard '90s teen comedy. I remember it was fun but not anything special. Lauren Ambrose, of course, is awesome but the movie itself is not that memorable.

Ambrose went to the high school my mom works at. I remember seeing her in Oklahoma. She stole the show. Their theater program has a pretty phenomenal pedigree. Paul Giamatti, Glenn Close, Michael Douglas and Jamie Lee Curtis also went there.

My mom said she was one of the nicest students ever. She still went by her real name back then - Lauren D'Ambruoso.

Also, I just picked up Can't Hardly Wait at Goodwill tonight.

I can edit the poll and add your vote if you feel strongly about it.

mae
01-30-2019, 07:20 AM
Keep in mind it's not just about winning the group, it's about obtaining the highest percentage possible, since ranking and seeding in forthcoming rounds is based on the percentage of the vote the movie received in preceding rounds (not average but cumulative).

For example, if a movie receives 100% in Round 1 and 100% in Round 2, it will be ranked using 200 going into Round 3. Which will probably place it first in Group 1. Others will be seeded in descending order across the groups, meaning the 32 highest ranking movies will be first in descending order from 1 to 32, from Group 1 to Group 32, and then for that second spot it will be the next 32 movies across Groups 1 to 32, and so on. Hopefully that makes sense, for anyone not familiar with how this works.

Randall Flagg

The seeding method is exactly why I rarely vote for 6 in each poll. It's important, IMO, to "weight" my vote by only voting for films I really feel are deserving.

mae
01-30-2019, 07:27 AM

Also I had Terminator 2 playing in the background this morning as I got ready for work lol.

I have only voted for 3 movies once, all others I voted for just 1 or 2. I wish there was an option for none of the above, so if you don't want to vote for any you can still affect its percentage.

^This^

Also, I was under the impression we weren't using the popular vote method. That seems pretty flawed. I thought we came up with a method where certain board members get to have multiple votes. That seems to make much more sense.
