What is mobile me?

Daghain

That's the newest incarnation. I don't have an iPhone (Samsung SYNCH, cheaper and better! This from a Mac Addict!) so no, don't need mobileme.

I don't know if anyone else has had this or if Aaron and/or The Matt know about it. I sometimes (like just a moment ago) can't type in the message boxes. It's like the frame won't allow for the cursor to be active in it.

What browser are you using?

Jean
01-20-2009, 09:21 AM
I've had something like this problem - have been unable to place the cursor into the Quick Reply Box a few times - but then I just clicked on an icon (B for bold, for example), and the [ B] [/B] signs appeared, and then the cursor was there.

I'm going to have to look into this Wuducynn... do you mean the quick reply box?

It happens in both the quick reply box and the regular reply to thread box.

What browser are you using?

Internet Explorer 7.0

I have Firefox on my home computer and I'm damned if I can remember if I've had this problem on that. I doubt it though.

I did a screen shot -

I have a question: Is there a way to see Notifications that I've already read? I had one this morning and tried to look at it on my phone but couldn't because my phone is horrible, and it's not showing up now I'm guessing because I clicked it on my phone. The suspense is killing me! I must know what it was! :panic:

Unless you delete them, your PM's will stay in your Inbox. Just click on Private Messages and you should automatically be directed to you PM Inbox.

Hannah
02-16-2009, 09:48 AM
And if it was a profile visitor message just go to your User CP and you can click on your profile and see if anyone left you one there as well.

alinda
02-25-2009, 07:15 AM
Yes you can, with gold membership, cost $ 500 or 5, 000 Beam Bucks
which coincidently are on the way to you right now.:wtf:

Daghain
02-25-2009, 07:23 AM
If you mean your screen name, I think Matt would have to do that.

If you get a gold membership, you can change your member title at will. :D

Or, for $1,000, I believe, you can change your member title once.

alinda
02-25-2009, 07:28 AM
I sent you enough to choose any or all of those options Mary.
Have fun with the name change.:huglove:

Matt
02-25-2009, 07:50 AM
Daggers is correct.

The beam bucks and gold membership have to do with Member Title, not Member Name.

I am willing to change your Member Name one time though so just let me know what you would like. There is no control panel option for it

Hannah
02-25-2009, 09:14 AM
On the member name change, as Matt said, it is a one time thing only (unless we're doing something fun like we did for Halloween) - so if you decide you want to change your user name there's no going back - you're stuck with whatever you pick. :D

i tell everyone i know to make sure they have their system backed up before they download anything - whether it's from a known source or not. that way if for some reason it causes a conflict you can just restore from your backup. of course, that didn't help me though did it? ><

The Lady of Shadows
03-03-2009, 06:19 PM
if you're gold - 300.

there's a bar graph at the top of the main pm area that shows where you are. plus it says you have XXX stored, out of XXX allowed or something like that.

you can download the ones you want to save. just select them and at the bottom where you would normally select delete, pick download.

hope that helps.

Thanks turtle, go figure it was right there in front of me the whole time. I just went and deleted a bunch so I should be good for quite awhile now.

Hello all,

Yesterday I discovered that the access to pictures hosted at some sites (such as http://i39.tinypic.com/ or http://i493.photobucket.com) is prevented by the Router's firewalls.

Yesterday I had troubles with photobucket and I saw a post from Wiz saying he can't see the pics hosted in tinypic.

Since you can't disconnect the firewall if you're in an office (or at least most people won't be able to do it), it might be a good idea to encourage everyone to post their pics in sites that can be linked here. Personally I upload the images here.

Well...just an idea. :)

Matt
03-06-2009, 07:33 AM
I can only see images that are uploaded here at work, so I would love as much of that as possible.

The board itself has no problem with those sites, can see them great at home. But individual work firewalls do block all kinds of stuff.

I'll bite. I'm starting to upload some photos to the gallery. However, a question arises: is there anyway to upload more than one at a time?

Matt
03-06-2009, 07:53 AM
There is a way to put in a URL to a album on a hosting site and get them all, but no way to upload more than one from your local computer. :(

It does suck, but I hear they are going to fix it when they get around to upgrading the thing.

e_taylor
03-06-2009, 07:56 AM
Its all good! It'll just take me a few weeks to get everything in order.

Excuse my ignorance - its still new to me! But.... how do the albums work? Right now I'm just uploading one by one, do I make albums and move them there after?

Matt
03-06-2009, 07:58 AM
You can do it either way, create first and upload straight to them or upload, create and then move.

You should have an "edit" option under all your pics that allows you to delete, change or move them. The drop down for catagory on the upload (or edit) screen will list your albums once they are created.

I have a bunch so you are welcome to have a look at my member gallery for an example. I can also move stuff out there so if you run into trouble, let me know.

Not that I know of.

All look great

Daghain
03-07-2009, 11:31 AM
I haven't been able to upload anything taken with my camera to this site in a long time. I'm guessing it has to do with file size, although supposedly that is not supposed to be a problem. I have no problem uploading those same images to Photobucket or to DBF's website. I can upload anything taken with the computer's built in camera and pretty much anything I swipe off the 'net to use for a sig/av.

Patrick
03-07-2009, 01:03 PM
I have no problem viewing photos from work or from home. I use Photobucket for my own uploads.

Daghain or Matt, can you post a link in here to whatever thread discusses how to use the Gallery? Thanks.

EDIT: I just remembered we have just such a thread in the Tutorials subforum right here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=447).

e_taylor
03-07-2009, 04:17 PM
I think I figured it out Matt. It must be something to do with filesize, because if I post it to a site like photobucket, then save that smaller file it will allow me to post it. Weird!

Matt

That's odd Daggers because I can't see any kind of problem with it at the moment.

I do go in and size every picture I take with my camera down because the hig resolution makes them like...2450x3000 or some huge number like that.

I'm sure the Gallery has a max size set somewhere but if you are under 1000X1000 (this is actually pretty big for posting) it should load up. Also, if the file is really large, it takes a long time to get on there depending on traffic at the site and connection speed.

I just had a rather weird experience. I was in Calvin's Corner and hit the "back" button to get back to the main Palaver page. When I got to that page, all the "envelope" icons on the left showed grey. I then noticed that I was no longer logged in. I logged in, and everything is back to normal. Any idea on what happened?

Is cursing allowed in member titles? There is a title I'd like to use, but I don't want to offend. I assume it is not, so I am asking. The word in question is "Muthafucking" because "Motherfucking" won't fit with the other characters.

Thanks.

Thank you! I checked the FAQ, but I didn't see it. Admittedly, however, I am distracted with Itty Bitty missing, some other personal issues, and work pressures. The image is definitely not NSFW or NSFBSK, but the title is so much more awesome if I can use profanity. I'll explain why when I change it, but that'll be later. Thanks again!

The New Post link has not worked for me for days now. Is this limited to just me? I can go into each thread, but I commonly use the new post feature more than staying in one specific thread.

Jason - That's weird. It's been working for me. Did you try logging out - clearing your temporary internet files - and then logging back in? That usually does it for me if I get unexpected results when reading threads.

Just figured out that those are not the only links. It won't allow me to vote in polls either. And it does not even bother to time out. it just stays in motion. I think I have a virus, but I'm not sure why it would cause problems mainly on these issues. If anyone has some tech ideas, feel free. :D

Matt

That would happen if someone deleted a thread or if a popular thread was moved to the non topic forum. Since posts are not counted in those, that could be the problem.

Thanks Matt. I figured it would be because something of a post large quantity was deleted/along those lines.

Not a problem... but i was wondering what is being used to open the pictures in such a nice "software" ?

I still have the same question, with the attached picture.

herbertwest

For the pictures attached to a message... they gets opened in a black "windows" which hide everything else.

Hi guys,

There's some kind of problem in my Collections thread (jhanic proofs) somewhere between posts #36 and 40. Whenever I try to look at that those posts, all I get is a plain white screen--no posts whatsoever. (I usually have my number of posts displayed at 40, but I did some playing around and narrowed it down to one of those five posts.) All the other pages are fine. This happens whenever that range of posts is displayed, whether the number of posts per page is five or 40.

Please help!

In an effort to fix this, I will be disabling all "plug ins" on the site Saturday night. These are the extras we have like the casino and member map (among many others). So if you are here, don't freak out.

Also, vBulletin has released their next version (4.0) which will be required on the site very soon. I figure that will fix it for sure but we do have some very old add ons here so those may need to be dealt with somehow in the process.

As always, I will do my best to make sure everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Well, I finally got up the chain at our server people and spoke to a really nice guy who walked me through some things. In the end, it isn't their fault. (of course)

Our wiki program is having a glitch and causing the white screens randomly on the board. The only option for a fix is to turn it off but then we will lose our wiki formating in the catalog and Towerpedia!

So I am coming up with a solution that includes changing the entire system. The wiki program is called "NuWiki" and is so unsupported now if you search that on google, the announcement on this site that we use it is the first hit.

So for now, we have to live with the white screen but I'm going to fix it soon.

Hi, Roehcai - and welcome to the site!

Another option you might want to consider is subscribing to threads you're interested in. Then you can click on User CP in the upper left, and only your subscribed threads will show there. That's what I've done. Once I read through those, I check out all the other new posts. You can unsubscribe to threads, too, so if you change you're mind down the road it's easy!

That seems the opposite of what it should be Brian. The only problem I have ever known with photos is what turtlex said and if your job actually blocks the site it is hosted on (photobucket)

Photos uploaded to the site (Gallery) should always be viewable

The first part of your post is true. We prefer that instead of trying to use the "upload attachment" feature at the bottom of the posts you "host" your pics in the gallery or off site. It saves on database space for the forum.

If you can give me a specific example of a pic you can't see, I might be able to help out more.

east-tennessee

Yes the site gallery is always viewable.

It's when I'm logged in and reading posts I cannot see uploaded photos, what I see is the link to click on to open a new window with the photo,,,such as imageshack, photo bucket, farm 5 ect....an example is the last page of Your new pride and joy in calvins corner..when I'm logged in all I see is links to open to look at the photos.

When I log out and view as a guest I can see the photos...strange..

This is the same on both my home and work computer..

Hi,

I didn't really know where to ask this and if anything can be done, but I was wondering if there is a way to avoid the dozens of notices that I have to "dismiss" manually (and individually)? They show up on every page, between the banner and the rest of the forum, and, quite frankly, are a bit annoying. :/ Hate to say that, being new and all, but I know I'd enjoy my time here a lot more if there was a way to, at the very least, dismiss them all at once instead of one at a time, waiting for the page to reload in between.

Thanks! :cowboy:

Jean

the easiest way to get rid of the notices is to vote in the polls they indicate

Brice

Yes, if you don't wish to dismiss them manually voting is your only other option I know of.

Bev Vincent
06-30-2010, 06:18 AM
If you're quick enough, you can hit dismiss on several of them at once. They don't always all "take," but usually I can dismiss at least three or four at a go, which cuts down on the wait time.

Matt

There is actually a reason it is set up the way it is. The notices are purposely "in your face" because we really want people to vote. It is just as easy to click the link and vote as it is to dismiss.

We hold a complex poll to see which one of Kings books is the best once a year and we like to get as many votes as possible.

If a person absolutely positively does not want to vote, they can dismiss but I really wish they would use the link to vote.

Jean
06-30-2010, 06:45 AM
why should anyone prefer dismissing to voting anyway? voting is fun, while dismissing is a drudge

and, Mo-linoDeViento - where you vote you can also post, you know, and read what other people/animals have posted, and this way integrate into the community the quickest and easiest way possible

Daghain
06-30-2010, 07:53 AM
Yeah, it's only for a couple months, and then they'll go away again. But, like bears said, voting is MUCH more fun than dismissing them. :D

Mo-linoDeViento
06-30-2010, 01:06 PM
If it's only once a year, I think I can deal with it. It's a bit of a nuisance now because of a slow internet connection, but we should be getting that fixed in a few weeks. With a slow connection, it's more time consuming to vote on all of them, and less time consuming (though still very much so) to just hit dismiss...a dozen times...every day. :P

But you raise a very good point about getting involved in the site that way, so I'll be voting on a few more now...

Thanks! (Sorry if I sound like I'm whining, by the way.)

Hannah
06-30-2010, 06:19 PM
No worries! We know the notices can be a bit of a drag for people who aren't voting, but have no other way of reminding people to vote. :D

By the way, the notices should only have to be dismissed once per notice. So while you may see a lot of notices up at once (my fault, as I usually create all fifteen notices on one day instead of doing five per day like I should), once you dismiss each one they should go away for good.

Welcome to the site, Mo-linoDeViento!

Thought this might be worth noting:

Yesterday, the link in my favs list stopped working. It took me to some kinda "search" thing but wasn't google or anything familiar. It happened to Dolso as well. We both went to the SKcollector site and got on through his link. Then I deleted the old one and replaced with a new "Add to Favorites" after clicking thru the Collectors link. Evrything went peachy after that.

Then today, I got a email notice of a posting in a subscribed thread and the post was not there!!

I don't know if these things are indicative of bigger problems or worth looking into, but I thought I would just pass them on to TPTB to ascertain their relevance.

I keep getting reports of people that cannot access the site so they will not benefit from this but we did have a problem with the company that controls the registration for our domain name. The site has about 3 different "services" that need to be paid every year and I missed the email on this one.

They deactivated the domain. Site was taken off line and replaced by a search engine/advertisement page.

It is all fine now and I can access the site with all major browsers so I'm not sure where to go with the people that can't get on. I am going to keep researching it of course.

If anyone that can access the site has someone that cannot asking them about it, please have them contact me at: mattrayne@thedarktower.org

Yes, I do. It wasn't intentional and he caught it right away. I think it's happened to most of us at one time or another. :D

No worries, bear - they wouldn't sell the site name out from under us that quickly. :couple:

and I was sure it had something to do with me being here in Russia! all kinds of frauds are possible here. I didn't even know my friends had the same problem - recently, as some may remember, my hotmail account crashed, and took away all my addresses, so I couldn't even email anyone! of course I didn't think of facebook - bears never think of facebooks - but I got to a Russian forum and asked a guy to check it for me, just to make sure it wasn't my comp. He said he got the same picture, and I started to install yahoo messenger to try to find anyone and to complain that some Russian crooks have done something unspeakable... Thank God everything resolved just after I googled yahoo messenger download and just stepped aside for a sec to re-check our site. Thank God for time zones!!! if I had to live with that horror all day long, like my overseas friends, I would have gone raving mad!!!

If mischievous russians or any other evildoers dare to fuck with this site they will have ME to contend with. Naturally they haven't a chance.

Anyhow, any time the site is down anyone and everyone is welcome to contact me by any means and I'll find out what I can.

Hi,

I keep getting a warning about Malware when I access various threads. This has only started happening over the last four weeks or so.

I'm using Windows Vista and the Google Chrome web browser.

Randall Flagg
08-18-2010, 03:22 PM
I just was able to 'recreate' that using Google and the Chrome browser, however I so far have only encountered it when clicking a link that led to the site. When I am logged into the site, I have yet to encounter the problem.
I'll discuss it with the PTB for a fix.

I'm not sure what this is but I will look into it, if it is coming up all the time while browsing the site, that is not good obviously.

The "warning" I got forwarded to me is actually an A+ rating on the site by Google. They say we are not dangerous in any way.

This site does not distribute Mal ware or any other type of solicitor content. If you receive a warning that says otherwise, I would love to see it.

It is a free resource of King information and we go to great lengths to make sure members aren't spammed or put at risk when they visit. I will look into why Chrome is sending the report but the report itself is simply information about how safe the site is from what I can see.

What antivirus software? Another message board had users reporting something similar using Avira Antivirus, which seems sensitive to certain links and banners in messages or signatures.

I'm using Avast Antivirus.

I've been using it for a while but it updates regularly. Maybe one of the updates is causing this?

Okay. The same thing just happened and here is a cut and paste of the message:

That does help, I wish they were more specific about what they found. I suspect Bev is correct because I think that actually happened here once too. An image hosted on another site but linked here.

Still looking into it.

Edit--

I'm actually a little confused because if you follow the insturctions on the website to get a current report, this is what I receive:

You are correct, it does. I really don't like that at all because even if you follow all of their links their own report says..."no, its fine". <_<

I'm not sure if you can even talk to a real person at google.

Matt

I searched for information on this and it seems like it happened to A LOT of websites. Google's definitive answer on if the site is safe or not it at this link.

http://www.unmaskparasites.com/security-report/?page=www.thedarktower.org

The also have other tests you can run against the site, anyone can do it. They all say the site is fine and I'm hoping whatever Google did will clear itself on their next data refresh.

I am 99.9% sure the site is not infected in any way and they say you can turn off this notification in Chrome by going "under the hood" (whatever that means).

So I will keep an eye on it, please keep reporting instances. Seems like google screwed up and people can probably avoid the whole thing by using Bing or Yahoo for a while if they are browsing from a search engine.

about a minute ago the site refused to post my quick reply in the mods forum, under some security pretext which I immediately forgot because of being panic-stricken. I was able to post after refreshing the page, though

For me it's actually clicking on threads, but not all of them all the time. Ironically clicking on this very thread brings up the warning!

Edit- oh okay. herbertwest just reported that. ;)

It is the browser you guys, it is really sensitive to something the site is doing but we are not hacked.

The link above shows how Google officially feels about he site and if you search the phrase the warning brings up, it happened to all kinds of sites that are browsed through google.

I've noticed today that I cannot put in any "smilies" into my posts. When I click the [More] button for the smilies, I get a refreshed page of the one I'm on, but no separate window for the smilies. I also cannot double-click a thread to indicate that I've read it. Just nothing happens.

John

Did this ever get resolved for you, John?

Regarding those malware warnings - I've got them also. I use IE8 and both McAfee and PC Tools Spyware Doctor. McAfee never gives me warnings but Spyware Dr. does. So I ran a test.

I scanned and came out clean with McAfee.

I scanned with Spyware Dr. and cleaned out all the "infections" which were just low priority cookies.

I opened my browser to my (yahoo) home page and scanned with Spyware Dr. again - came out clean.

I logged into this site, opened one random thread *this one* and logged off and closed my browser and ran Spyware Dr. again.

Found and removed one "infection" - apmebf.com cookie. It was flagged as "Known_bad_site, Threat_level: low"

I googled it later and the reviews are mixed, to say the least!

Anyway, with a clean system again, I opened my browser and set the security level to HIGH (Tools/options/security/internet zone).

I then logged back into this site and opened the same thread, logged off and ran the scan again. It came out clean! The only problem with a HIGH security setting - after logging in did not automatically redirect me and when trying to post I had the same smiley problem John mentions above. Also could not log into Facebook or a few other sites. So I set my Internet Zone security back to MEDIUM HIGH.

As a test I came back here and logged in, opened this thread, logged out and scanned again and got the same cookie.

I don't think it is dangerous but a lot of spyware and antivirus software seems to think it could be or could be easily hacked.

.....my 2 centavos...

I linked to the home page and this time it actually listed all the problem images. As it's a generated page I don't think I can link to it, but it's basically a bunch of jpgs! I suspect, as Matt has said, it's Google being finicky though.
