Matt
06-25-2007, 09:18 AM
I actually get a bunch. But I do archive them down or simply delete when it seems to be getting full.

I replied to that one didn't I Tamez? You guys have to keep me honest.

A question from me :D

Could someone please resize this picture for me.

16x16 104kb or somewhere around there? I am at work without the program I need

Randall Flagg

Right now it's 82x76 pixels. You want it 16x16 pixels?
This is 41x38:
86

Matt
06-25-2007, 02:53 PM
Yeah, it might be a little small I guess. I needed to be "icon" size so I could add it someplace on the site.

That may work right there though. Thank you Jerome.

Randall Flagg
06-25-2007, 03:49 PM
I can make it smaller, I think you won't be able to tell it's a key and hand though.

Matt - in book connections, when you click on the Black House link it takes you straight to the discussion and the cover image no longer works.

Daghain

Darkthoughts
09-26-2007, 01:34 PM
I feel like such a dufus, having just noticed the lengthy discussion about this in the other thread :D

I'm with you Daggers, I prefer it the old way - otherwise its like presenting your notes and your final paper on the same sheet (ooh, I'm just full of sh...metaphors today!)

Matt
09-26-2007, 01:36 PM

There are also some broken images out there, I am fixing them. Still haven't figured out why that happens but all you have to do to fix it is edit the article, dont' change anything and save

Darkthoughts
09-26-2007, 01:38 PM
Ah groovy, I'll remember that

Daghain
09-26-2007, 06:13 PM
I think sometimes the broken pics are because of the name of the pic - I try not to use anything that may be a wiki word.

And Darkthoughts said it exactly - it looks like your notes and a final paper - sloppy. I prefer the way it looked before. :D

We Calvins are neat freaks, you know.

Its back now, I just wanted to show the alternative.

As far as the images, out of the box NuWiki is set to ignore anything that is within [img] tags. Since we use an [xfloat] tag I had to alter the code to ignore that as well. That fixed it I believe.

I think the broken images happened yesterday because I had to rebuild the post cache as routine maint on the site.

Daghain

Does Who Is Online work properly for everyone? For me it's always what it was a few hours ago, with 7 unread posts and 1 unread PM - until I refresh it.

Matt
10-04-2007, 09:04 AM
Who's online only refreshes once an hour on the site to save on server load.

From what I have read, it is one of the best ways out there to keep the common bit of slowdash.

Jean
10-04-2007, 09:35 AM
yes, but I was kinda surprized that it kept showing me that pop-up window, insisting that I have a new PM... it was nice, because the PM was from Odetta, but very groundhog-dayish anyway.

Is there a certain # of posts you have to get to make the # of characters you can have in your sig bigger? Because mine has a cap of 250 characters without BBC markups, and I've definitely seen some longer sigs on the site. :)

Daghain
11-03-2007, 03:50 PM
Is it maybe because you're trying to do one long sig, instead of several short ones?

Matt
11-03-2007, 03:55 PM
Its capped at 250 for registered users, the admin on the site have a bit of leeway. :)

how do i start my own thread

You should be able to post a new thread right now.
In the appropriate area, before entering any other thread, click on the New Topic button. Enter the title of the thread (use care for spelling, as you want attention on the thread and not on a typo) and in the body of the text window, make your presentation.
Good luck.

Matt

Yep, there are no restrictions on starting threads.

I was wondering : is there no button to mark the forums as read?

i mean, not the whole forum, but the subforums... ?

Randall Flagg
11-18-2007, 07:16 AM
Above the list of threads is a dark bar. To the right should be Forum Tools
Click on forum tools to create a drop down box.
One choice is "Mark forum read"
Click on Mark Forum Read
Voila! The forum should now be de-highlighted.

Is there any easy way to reduce the quality of a photo too below the 2 KB cap for sig pictures without resizing the picture so small that its barely there?

Matt
11-21-2007, 05:22 AM
Hmmm...not sure what you mean there Kevin.

Pictures that are uploaded to the forum have a restriction on them, if the pic is hosted (here or elsewhere) it can be pretty much any size.

Kevin
11-21-2007, 05:30 AM
Wait, are you saying that if I host the picture on the site than it can be used in my signature, regardless of size?

Too clarify: When I try to put a picture in my signature it tells me that the picture I want to use is larger than 2 KB (I think its 9 KB), I'm wondering if there is a way to reduce the quality of the picture (without changing its size) so that it meets the 2 KB cap. I'm using the 'browse' option to do this as the picture is on my PC rather than at a specific URL.

Please help! :)

Jean
11-21-2007, 05:54 AM
what format is your picture? I mean both the size and the file extension

Daghain
11-21-2007, 08:36 AM
If it has a lot of background, you can crop it to make it smaller as well. If I were home I'd just tell you to send it to me and I'd try and fix it for you, but I can't do it from work. :(

Jean
11-21-2007, 08:37 AM

Kevin

There is the picture, if either of you, or ANYONE could help me, that'd be fantastic.

It could be clipped more on the sides, as long as all the people and the bus are there. IF that helps. I dunno. :(

Matt
11-21-2007, 12:27 PM
That image should be fine for a sig the way it is. I know the process is a bit confusing but I can't image it wouldn't go the way it is.

Daghain
11-21-2007, 12:33 PM
Yeah, that looks small enough to me, too.

Matt
11-21-2007, 12:34 PM
The Daggers quote is missing a close bracket but the rest looks great!

Kevin
11-21-2007, 12:34 PM
Ok, well I used the 'insert image button' this time instead of the 'Signature Picture' stuff underneath the text box. It works now. What is the difference though?

Matt
11-21-2007, 12:36 PM
Its a two step process. The first one is getting the image on your profile, the other is inserting it.

I believe the board keeps track of past sig images so you can navigate between them easily

Kevin

You know at the top of a thread, it has the links for:

Palaver > Keystone Tower > The Dogan

Can we have that at the bottom as well? In this case, I could then just click on "Keystone Tower" to return to the main forum without scrolling all the way back to the top (or using the somewhat clunky "Forum Jump").

One thing you might want to try instead of scrolling all the way up the page is hitting the "Home" key on your keyboard. It will jump you up to the top of the page without having to scroll.

Click on the add image button (it looks like a little square with mountains on it) and insert the location of your image. You'll need to either host it on your own site, or you can host it in the members gallery. It will appear the size it is.

Heather19
12-09-2007, 05:14 PM
thanks, I was actually talking about a personal photo or that sort, nothing large or extravagant. Is that the same? And what is the difference between the image button and the attachment button? Can that one be used for pics?

Randall Flagg
12-09-2007, 07:33 PM
At the bottom of this post is an uploaded image, done by clicking on the Manage attachments button.
There are greater restrictions on the size using this feature.
If you upload the image here to the gallery, or use an image hosting site you can upload larger pictures.
Notice that it is a thumbnail image and a person has to click on it again to see the larger image.
In addition, the person then has to hit the back button on their browser to return to the post-irritating to say the least.
If you upload to the gallery, or use a hosting service and use the Insert image button, the picture is in your post full size, without the neeed for someone to click again.

Here is the image using a hosting service:
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/164/bikeir1.jpg

And here is the attachment image:

Just a small addon to the "home-button" thingie.

If you want to scroll down all the way of the page, just hit the "End" button and you'll go there. Also, when you're typing something in a post or in word document or any other document stuff, if you want to go back to the beginning of the line, to correct something, just hit the "Home" button there as well, and then to go back to the end of the line, so that you can continue typing, just hit the "End" button... but I'm sure you all knew this! :)

Jean
12-10-2007, 03:28 AM
or, while we are at it, hit Ctrl + left/right arrow, and you'll be, respectively, at the beginning/end of the word you're typing. I am not sure it's about the site, but I know it's, too, one of those little nice things people are sometimes unaware of.

control+F allows you to seach for a certain word on the page.

if you would like to read all of the posts by a certain member in one thread, click "search this thread" at the top of the page. go to advanced search. type in the user name where it says "search by user name" (dur) then hit "search now." this will return all of the posts made by that user in that thread.

Is there a way to figure out how many posts I have in total, including in off-topic areas?

Randall Flagg
12-16-2007, 07:47 PM
Not easily.
You could search your own posts, tally them up and have a total.
Quality, not quantity of posts is important for the forum to thrive.

Kevin
12-16-2007, 07:53 PM
Oh I'm just curious. That would be pretty lengthy to do though. Thanks anyways. :)

Not that tough.
The inquiry reveals you have ~468 posts.
It's on the top line of the "Find all posts by this member". I bracketed it in red.

EDIT: RIGHT NOW IT SEEMS TO CAP AT YOUR LAST 500 POSTS.-Looking into that.

Randall Flagg
12-16-2007, 08:28 PM
It seems to cap at 500. Obviously you have more.
Also, that could create difficulties, somtimes it's easiest to search ones own posts,or others far, far, back, for relevant information.
Matt--------------where are you?

HostRocket (our hosting service) was attacked last night across several servers. It caused our site to be out of communication for the entire evening.

I noticed last night but decided since it was Christmas, I would wait until this morning to find out what was going on. They almost had it fixed by then.

This site is backed up weekly, every bit-to the hard drive on my computer to make sure we don't end up losing a monster amount of data in the even our hosting service has a major problem at anytime in the future which I really don't expect.

Thank you for the explanation Matt, and thank you Jean for bumping it. You take good care of your "people" like a good mod should.

New problem; when I try to reply to any thread at this site, everything loads just fine but it takes 1 to 3 minutes for the cursor to appear in the reply box so I can begin typing.

I have:

1. Noticed this only in the past 4 days.

2. It has been happening with two totally separate computers.

3. It has been happening with two totally separate isp's.

4. It is only happening at this site and not others.

5. I have tried restarting BOTH computers to no avail.

6. It doesn't happen when I quote someone.

7. It doesn't happen when I edit.

8. It DOES happen when I am on advanced AND quick reply.

Is this some silly board setting I have screwed up?

Is there a way to change my settings for the amount of time of of inactivity before the site logs a member off?

I will sometimes place .Com in the background when I hold a counseling session and when I return...I'm logged off.

I like surprises. I wouldn't mind posting a list of the member title progression w/o the suprises (like the Michael Jackson, JFK, and Susan's roast beef popkin titles). But the surprises, well, it'd ruin it to have people know what comes at 15,000 posts and above, etc.
