Is that the reason the site only works for me now on WiFi?

I dont think so, its just interesting, I'm looking for reasons why you couldn't access it on mobile. The first thing I thought of was DNS resolution issues and hitting the correct IP address would have helped diagnose that.

My home internet connection went down yesterday, so I didn't have WiFi.

I couldn't connect to thedarktower.org with my cellular data plan. The same as Brian mentioned above.

I assume this is an anti-Brian conspiracy. :wtf:

Gotta be lol. Looks like it's working now.

What makes you such a special Brian?? I thought we all were sticking together!

Is this an Iphone/ Mac issue. Or is it affecting Android/PC users too?

I have android. It's just your site. Other sites loaded properly.

Many years ago, a boss of mine sent out a questionnaire to get to know her team better. One question asked what name you prefer to go by. Just because, I said T-Bone. I was officially T-Bone to the team for the next few years!

I tried to host about 20 pics in the gallery here. I get a message saying the file sizes are too large to process. So I checked on file size limits (to know how much to resize them) and it says I have unlimited file size and capacity.
So I hosted them on Google photos and several members say they can't see them (in Starkblast threads: Fottergraphs, Landscapes and wildlife, flowers, Bearrrs and The Palaver Castle). I see them just fine and they aren't particularly large.

Help!!

Even if I go directly to that image, I get the same image seen here. FYI, unlimited file size and capacity refers to total limit for hosting images, not to the individual file size (pixels, and or actual file size).

Jon, The image you posted is not in the format recognised by the site. It has to reference a file that ends in a recognised graphic file type like .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .gif

Yours is a link to your hosting site and looks like this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/c9taJ73svzT4Mhi3KAdEyLtVDxaX5DjW8Nyz_nwHG-xlo7jc-hk4yFP2ky1CZZq8lPvEnGvi9dv5woZr3ZZ5bjHZB2v1lCaQ7eu rhdVQ3qWhmTlVcBw3yOmWbFeieOGKyBN6mb5GaJfC8LrEgeQKu NDcd0PdJoc0-xRyMdM-lzSffsFPKMUGQGVMX_Z4nOCh00mP5FPNcAo8pMh5s793g8qUHg tsaLGLIQeHbYoSMx4u_WuKmZ3jcTQul4ZEb_dKqkJ1GsjdKff3-waALVGNXfEspWykW4ht6uiJpNpNE81mfy6VklpXYLJOiPDKvox vo292IeUwCgT6EypuZLsWs0v02k_S2wbf-h8El3Nl3JKXwgbHrShxD45kWhBHo9zVvAGCN_CQBBIasWQZbah aayO7sPbiCPsLUaZiLoqzvJpBth8LVg0Suu_cZ1WVG5rpl0W4d 0sZ9-QHl6OXCugjYLs4jkr0cJfBHX5Tp52XL9E8AcVqg579i-Rdk-efYGPJPryct-7FAhutw4TzP_vxWw4132L42kndzAjv10Y1ZiTu_yhZaWCsBX6p OArCfRXrOrCwvSFAgw1jmC88_akpLK6R5Qa03pBbduegNk0ewj iNrNKobVfTp8xPMvryo7hASzG_O6kcImPafrNQK0QIDTcdJOFz Ulu6SoY35ix39RkYaGo4meZ2W5j3CAsK=w872-h654-no?authuser=0

You can probably see it because you are are logged into your hosting and it redirects automatically for you.

Now the other post you made #3009 looks fine, because its a link to an actual image:

Thanks

A lot of the hosting sites have some sort of menu where you can find the direct link to the image. The image itself is (by definition) a graphic file, it's just the hosting obscures the link to the actual file itself.

Rule of thumb, no matter how long the url is that you post, if it doesn't end with an image file type, it's unlikely to work properly on the site.

Facebook is notorious for this. You can't copy/paste anything from that site. They always completely obscure the URL.

I'm an old man. I should have just stuck with BB code anyway. If I hadn't tried to use the uploader here at the site I would have seen the full code and noticed the ending was not right.

When using Microsoft Edge I get this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/palaver1.jpg

I click on Forum and any sub forum but when I click on any thread, I get that red warning screen.

It only happens in Edge. Have tried IE, Firefox and Chrome and no problem.

I know I can use those but prefer Edge.

FYI, not sure if it's related or not, but after receiving the latest Windows update today, I've experienced some quirks using Firefox to post images in a PM or a post. Using the insert image icon the picture shows up in the body of the post/pm, but when I submit the post or PM, I get a 403 error. I tested Chrome and Edge and things work as they should.
I have the latest version of 64 bit Firefox installed.
A quirky but viable workaround is the use the BB code for inserting and image:
[IMG]URL of image[/IMG

I left the last closing bracket off of the BB code, you will need to use it to actually post an image.

Not long after posting this, I was unable to access the site at all until this morning (around 2 1/2 days). Looking around, it looks like things were active during that time; was I the only one experiencing this? FYI, this was the case using Google Chrome on a laptop and Safari on an iPhone. I don't actually need a "solution"; I'm just curious.

Possible issue with IPv6 settings?

Check this out: https://www.linode.com/community/questions/11387/help-quotthis-site-cant-be-reachedquot-from-cellular-networks

Not exactly the same scenario as our hosting, but I can confirm I see the same results when doing those tests against the site.

this is the recommendation:
To get it working for those customers, you could either add the required "Listen" arguments to your Apache config for IPv6[1] and restart Apache, or remove your AAAA records and not advertise IPv6 for that domain.

I have been using firefox for years, but getting frustrated with it, so trying out other browsers. Was trying microsoft edge, but every time I try to read a thread I get a message from microsoft that the page has been marked as dangerous for phishing attacks. Even if I report it as safe, it still gives me the error. I can choose to visit it anyway, but it is a PITA.

So just wondering if anyone else uses microsoft edge without these type of issues, and if so, what you did to stop this.

Thanks,
Mike

When using Microsoft Edge I get this:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/palaver1.jpg

I click on Forum and any sub forum but when I click on any thread, I get that red warning screen.

It only happens in Edge. Have tried IE, Firefox and Chrome and no problem.

I know I can use those but prefer Edge.
:pirate:

Click on the More Information
Under the dropdown choices select go there anyway.

From the upper right corner click on settings
Again click on settings
Select Privacy and services
Scroll down to services and deselect Microsoft Defender Smartscreen

Probably just keep using IE for this site for now, thanks!

I use Firefox just for this site now. I don't want to change Edge settings that would possibly allow viruses to get in from other sites.

I have also told Edge to go to this site anyway and reported this site as safe many times but it (Edge) is still unusable for this site, for me.

Is there a way to change the subforums of Calvin Towers?

What I mean by that, is that I use the grey theme, and I can NEVER see if there is a new message or not in the calvin towers. Because of the thumbnails. They are not explicit and I can't see if there is any new posts, any thing I may be able to add any input

I explained this in a collection thread. I'll explain here too. You can PM me for more help if you need it.

There is a "RESIZE" code. It reduces each dimension of the original picture by a percentage. If you wanted to reduce the dimension by 50% you would use this code without the spaces.
[ resize="50"][ img]Image URL here[ /IMG][ /RESIZE]

Here is a sample. The first image is full size. The second is 75%. The third 50%. The forth 25%.

You can use any percentage you like.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/20201023_130446.jpg
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/20201023_130446.jpg

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/20201023_130446.jpg

The site automatically reduced the original picture and the 75% picture. That is why the ratio to the others doesn't appear to be correct.

Oh, ok. I didnt realise the "blue" difference. Which, IMO, is quite subtle.
But also, once you click on a catalog subforum, it's difficult to notice posts that has messages because they are then organised alphabetically.
Once in a subforum, is there a way to organise it by last messages / post time?

Strictly speaking, this issue is not a TDT problem, but a problem I'm having that relates to TDT, but perhaps someone here might know what is going on.

I used to access this site on a Dell laptop (Windows) with Google Chrome; when I did so, every time I went to the site, it logged me in automatically (as I want). I then changed laptops to a MacBook (MacOS Big Sur) and now access the site through Safari, and every time I go to TDT, I must log in again. Another odd thing: I can be logged in and moving around the regular site (threads, posts etc.), but if I click "gallery," I get the log in page again and must log in again.

Some info:
- I always check the "remember me" box below my credentials (this appears to make no difference)
- my MacBook remembers the password and enters it for me, but only once I've confirmed that I want it to and used my fingerprint to enable it (this doesn't save me any steps; it just saves me the trouble of remembering my password)

I've poked around in Safari's safety and privacy settings and it appears I've given TDT all permissions I can think of, so I'm not sure if this is just the way it is and change isn't possible, or if I'm missing something (which seems more likely).

I'm not interested in going back to Chrome, FYI.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I can report a similar story. It used to auto log me in every time as well. This stopped happening a few months back (not sure exactly when). I'm also on a Mac, (not updated to Big Sur yet though) and was using Chrome. I haven't gotten to the bottom of why it stopped working either.

I have a similair issue.

I have the site's main page bookmarked but when I first get here I'm not logged into the site. I can tell because the background color is that ugly, baby-shit yellow. But as soon as I click on the forum link on the toolstrip menu at the top of the page, it changes to the dark background and I'm logged in.

It's not a huge deal but definitely something that didn't used to happen. IIRC it changed sometime last year.

Same here -- my bookmark is to New Posts. When that page comes up and I click on the link to go to the second page, I get an error. However, if go to my bookmark a second time, everything works properly for that session. If I come back an hour or two later, I have to go through the same process. I never have to actually log in, but I have to play this little game.

Chrome on a Windows 10 system.

Dumb question time: what exactly happens if I "subscribe" to a thread?

Background: I'm looking for a way of marking threads I like to return to, and often these are threads that don't see much activity, so that notification of new posts - while useful - wouldn't completely give me what I'm seeking, but if subscribing puts these threads in a list I can easily find at any time, that would work.

I am able to upload without issue as well. The jsmith is a reference to the site directory where the files are hosted and not username related. Could you try clearing your cookies/cache and also try another browser? Also try changing the filename.

Clearing the cache did nothing. Changing the name worked.

Thanks, Michael.

Sometimes I like to take a nostalgic trip in the wayback machine and check out my earlier posts. I admit I am not the most fluent in vBulletin. Part of the reason for that is I have been viewing these boards for almost a decade in the default (tan) color scheme. The problem with this is that it obscures some of the text on the controls (although that issue is not my technical question)

When I click on my username/profile I can press "find all posts" and it shows me 25 pages of my last posts, but this does not go all the way back to the very beginning of my posting on tdt.org. I think that is all the search function can pull up. How can i find a list of ALL my content (so i can go back and read early posts I have made)

Like for example I was looking to try and find my very 1st post on the boards. I was able to search the introduction thread directly and found the earliest post (2/09/23) in that way. ( i think that may have been my 1st post, but i'm not sure?)

I fear it is because i don't know exactly how to manipulate the search mechanism, but it definitely seems like the "find all posts" only goes so far back (or has a cap on how many pages of posts it can display)

This worked for me.

Select the advanced Search option (top right) and use these settings (change my username to yours):

I could see all the way back to my 1st post.

If you can give me specifics where the color scheme causes issues, I might be able to fix the theme.

Maybe it moved, but I no longer see the thing to change the color scheme (from Pumpkin of Pain to gray).

RF described turning it to black, but it's no longer black, and I no longer have the ability to change it to black.

I can certainly live with the orange default if necessary, but if the button is lurking around, I'd like to know where.

I've always kept mine black and it's still black for me so I didn't even notice any changes. I just assumed it was still black for everyone else.

On upper right of your screen click on:
Settings

Scroll down, and on left side of screen select:
General Settings

Scroll down to Miscellaneous Options, and under Forum Skin using the drop down box select your preferred skin

Save changes

That should do it, but if not, on any regular forum page go to bottom left and using the drop down box, select the skin you prefer.

Under Miscellaneous Options, there is nothing that says "Forum Skin"; instead, there are 3 options under "Message Editor Interface" and 2 under "Enhanced Attachment Uploading."

That's what I used to do all the time, but that drop-down box no longer appears on my screen (that's what prompted my question).

Dell Inspiron laptop, Google Chrome.

I should add, in case it isn't obvious: this is far from an emergency, I don't want anyone blowing up their afternoon solving this, I can live with the color, I just thought I might've been missing something obvious.

In your browser "whitelist" the site.
You will have to research how to do it for your specific browser.
It also could need addressing in your anti-virus software.

There is a lot of spam since a week or two.
Mostly in the collection threads.
I keep reporting like 4-5 a day

Any chance there is an option to block new members to post external links, if they dont have like... i dont know, 5 or 10 previous messages?

I'm a moderator on another fairly large message board with over 100,000 registered members. We do that exact thing over there. I think it's 10 posts before newbies can post links.

I'll look into a minimum post before links answer. I'll also talk to my son, who runs the server side to see if he can help. In the interim, I just keep deleting the posts and banning the person.

Dumb question, but would it maybe be possible for Jerome to send a global private message / email to all of the members and mention the fundraiser?
It's possible there is a lot of inactive users, but it may remind them of the board and/or incitate them to make a donation

If I sent a Global email, I would get in trouble for flooding the servers with 10's of thousands of emails.

That's a good idea.
Looking right now, there are 16 users logged into the forums and at least 7 of them are obvious spam accounts that were just created.
The collecting threads have been getting hit with spam posts in the last few minutes from one of them. (I flagged some of them already)

Twice a day I look for new members and ban obvious spam accounts before they have ever posted.
I probably block 20 spammers a day before they even have a chance to post/spam.
