Hi guys. Jen, who formerly had the username alkanto, has set up a new account as Brujon, but it doesn't look like anything is posting properly. Are there any problems with her account?

fernandito

Not posting properly as in it's just not showing up when she hits 'post reply'?

DoctorDodge
08-03-2016, 11:21 AM
So far, what she's specifically told me is that nothing is posting/working and she's made over 5 posts so far. I'll ask her for more detail. Is there any chance the site would think she's a spambot?

Bev Vincent

I see one post from her: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/search.php?searchid=4050261

DoctorDodge

She's just replied and said that the only post that's showing up so far is the 'Introduce yourself' post. She's tried to make about 5 posts since then.

DoctorDodge

She's also wondering if any of the posts she's made are awaiting approval at all, and that they may not be counting as they're all in the off-topic boards.

I just approved several posts. All should be well now.

I'm a new member and none of my posts are being approved. Is this normal? I use a number of other forums for different subjects and have never had this much difficulty getting started on one before.

There is a five post threshold before you get full member privileges. It's to prevent spammers and bots. Some forum posts are moderated first while some are not.

Randall Flagg

The issue should be fixed for Chrome browser users. It seems to work for IE.
Youtube (Google, Alphabet, whatever you wish to call them) made a code change. Firefox caught it and fixed their browser in a few hours. Chrome (Google, Alphabet, cough cough) apparently doesn't care about the numerous forums out there.
I haven't tried Safari, Opera, etc.
Please advise if there are still issues.

The only thing is the previous code had somewhat larger videos, whereas this new code specifies a size of 640 X 385. I'm not sure what the old dimensions were, but maybe 15-20% larger? According to one post I found, I believe the code can be tweaked to 853 X 510 to get back to the original size: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9072274/fix-youtube-black-sidebars-in-iframe-853-by-480

RF, any chance the video dimensions can be adjusted as per my post above? The smaller size is not ideal for watching stuff in-page, especially movie trailers and such.

Cleared the cache last night on my laptop and tried again this morning. I am randomly still getting the DNS error but only when I try to hit http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/index.php
everything else seems to be working great. After Michael posted last night there were still some issues with Tapatalk connecting but that could be a tapatalk issue?

I've accessed the site today on my PC using Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera, and Safari.
The only issue I've found is that Safari (Apple) doesn't support the youtube images to directly play. One has to click on the little youtube icon at the bottom of the fuzzy/static box.

I've also accessed it via my Android phone (Samsung from Verizon) with the default browser as well as the Firefox app on the phone. Seems fine.

Are you running a PC?
If running a PC, in Admin mode, command prompt, can you ping www.thedarktower.org (http://www.thedarktower.org) and give the IP address you receive?

P.S. It looks like your looking for new reply/post. Is that correct?

My Firefox is always updated. I'm actually a beta tester. I cleared the DNS cache more than once. IE and Chrome don't update in Vista so I don't use them.

I'm going to try to "refresh" Firefox and see if that helps. Meanwhile I'll use TOR.

Randall Flagg

I'm perplexed. Saying you are a beta tester for Firefox, while using Windows Vista is puzzling.
A bit like Firefox bothering with Windows 95, or a DOS PC.
Unless it's legacy work it "doesn't compute".

Old tech isn't necessarily bad tech. The computers on the ISS use Intel 386 processors for reliability. The DoD uses floppy discs in their nuclear weapons program.

Try to either re-subscribe, or unsubscribe, then go back and subscribe.

Not sure what issue I am having. I cannot connect from any device or browser except for Tor (Mac, iPhone, iPad). I just get "server not found" or "[insert browser] can't find the server".

I've tried resetting the browsers, clearing all history, etc. It was working yesterday in the afternoon but then just stopped. I am at a hotel so I have tried accessing via the hotel's wifi and my phones LTE connection.

I get this several times a day for at least the last couple of days. Have already done the cache clearing and dns flushing but it still happens. If I refresh anywhere from 5 to 15 times or just wait several minutes, I can connect fine.

Happens in both IE and Firefox.

I've tried several but here's the info on one and they all are basically the same type, size, and dimensions: JPEG/1.70 MB/3264 x 2448.

Also tried unsubscribing and re-subscribing to several threads with no luck. I'm subscribed to about 165 threads so going through each one and doing this is not worth my while. I reckon I'll just have to click "What's New" til it works itself out.

I haven't read all through the recent posts, and so apologies if there is a solution posted above, but I am still having issues accessing the site from my iPhone 6. The Safari and Chrome browsers I have installed both won't connect to the server. I also use the Tapatalk App, and that sends me push notifications that people have posted, but when I go to look, it says I don't have permissions to access.

Specs: Iphone 6 running IOS 10. At home I also use a DNS provider that ricks my device in to thinming its in the US.

I'm here at work on a desktop and its working fine.

If there are solutins up thread, can someone just let me know and I'll start reviewing the posts.

At the top of every thread page should be a "Thread Tools" option drop down menu. Once the "Subscribe to this thread" is clicked on, you should then see a menu that allows you to choose how to be notified.

I also am not receiving emails to subscribed threads. I unsubscribed and resubscribed, but I'm pretty sure I'm still not getting them.

Hey Brian, I was having same issue with uploading photos. I have a Mac, opened photo in Preview, changed size (under Tools) from 72 to 52 resolution, and then image uploaded fine (although DT previously was able to upload the original size).

Yea, Peri. Never had an issue before the switch either. I think the old server or whatnot sorted that stuff out on its own. Thanks for the info though! I'll give it a shot. Good luck with getting email notifications. I went through a hand full of threads manually to try and fix the issue. No dice. I really loved that feature so hopefully it will get sorted out. I haven't tried deleting all the threads and re-subscribing as they pop up in "What's New". That might be a fix.

My son is the server tech person. He won't be home from work until ~10AM PDT today. I'll have him look into the issues and report back here in the thread.

I ran a diagnostic and it's clear that emails are not going out. That is a server configuration problem that Michael will have to correct.

Appreciate it RF and all that you and the staff do for us nutty OCD collector types. Just frustration on my end when something doesn't work like it did before.

So haven't been able to get it to open on my work laptop all day. Flushed dns and restarted still nothing just trying www.thedarktower.org. tapatalk stopped and phone browser stopped as well while on WiFi. Changed to data and it now working. Looks like the network is storing the DNS entry at work and I cant flush that one.

Something Matt set up back in the day. I think it got you a few extra perks but nothing now a days. Rf had talked about doing a paid subscription to keep the ads away but instead runs a yearly fundraiser to help support the cost of the site (like there server and HDS he just had to replace).

Note to RF and Michael, emails are working again. Thanks guys you're the best!

The site has a size limitation Brian, but there are tags you can add when displaying it to make it appear smaller when viewed, but full size when clicked. What specifically are you trying to achieve?

The file size wasn't an issue in the past, Simon. I was able to upload the original size without issue. Last night, I downsized from the original size to large size and it worked fine. I was just curious if that's something I'll need to do always moving forward. Not a big deal if so. Easy enough to do.

If photo upload width or height exceeds maximums, resize upload down to the max dimensions?

Reading that I read that if the length x width is too large size it down. I think the issue is that the file size is too large so it could fit in the length x width but still exceed the file size limit. That may have to be somewhere else.

I'm having issues uploading photo's. I have tried uploading a couple of photos (1 at a time) several times, but it never shows up in my gallery. I tried cropping the photo to make it smaller, and compressing it to make it the file size smaller, but no luck. I don't get any error messages, it just never shows up in my gallery. Is there a limit to number of photo's, I only have 46 so far. (I couldn't figure out how to delete the existing ones either). I hope these files aren't go to some other unintended location.

Thanks,

Read upthread about image maximum size. There are restrictions in pixels, and actual file size.

As to deleting photos, there should be a "Photo Options" icon when you are viewing your image.

I've noticed in the last few weeks that when I resize the screen, the ribbons across the top of the page get squished up instead of resizing. Like in this pic you can see the search text box is covering up some of the wording and the "new posts" is covered as well.

Not sure what your display resolution is, but once you zoom to 125% or more it does begin to overlap. The PC laptop I'm using now has a 1366 x 768 resolution. I haven't tried it yet on a larger/higher resolution screen.
I normally view at 100%, so haven't encountered the issue. Interestingly, the issue dies not present on my android phone (Samsung Note 3) using IE, or Firefox.

My resolution is 1920 x 1200. Like I said, it's not really a big deal. Just something I happened to notice.

I usually have a Chrome window open in the corner of one of my screens but I keep it pretty small. It's among the other dozen or so windows/applications I have running at any given time.

Basically it is caused by the HTML/CSS. From what I can see the tabs are an unordered list and the next set of menu items a nested unordered list. Since these are not contained they can lay over each other. Also since the seach bar floats over everything and there is no right margin for it in the tabs it will float over the tabs and they will not drop to the next level until they hit the right side of the div they are encapsulated in.

TLDR
HTML/CSS is a fickle bitch and it's more work than it's worth. (Or maybe that's my distaste for CSS talking)

Dumb question which I probably already asked before : if I am searching for a specific post by a specific member, I get a result being a thread... but with no link to at least the page containing that post
eg : do i really have to go through the 92 pages of the thread to find that post?

I usually try to go through google to find what I am looking for, but it aint always useful if for instance the page/post hasnt been indexed.

You are probably searching the entire site, for which this option is not shown. Use the search tool on the specific forum you are interested in (see below)

I never actually noticed this button.

Seems a bit archaic, but ok.
So if i am looking for something, i must :
1) do a global search, to find the thread
2) do a search in the thread to find the actual post

Is there really nothing simpler?

As pretty much anything collector related gets posted in Calvin's Corner, you really only need to open that at the top level and search there. It will search sub threads below the one you are viewing.

Click Advanced Search - click the Search Single Content Type tab - look near the bottom of the page for Show Results as: - click Posts - look below that for Save Search Preferences - click Go

You can now enter your search terms. The page will provide results as posts.
Now whenever you want to search for posts just click Advanced Search then click the Search Single Content Type tab and enter your search string. The page will already be set to return results as posts.

Perhaps some of our savvy tech people can advise. Several members all of a sudden are having trouble accessing the site. One member said he couldn't access on his regular desktop or laptop using Chrome or IE.
He was able to access via his tablet.
He says his wife tried from work and it said "Forbidden". That could be a work intentional blockage. Advice would be appreciated.

I have no idea why is that.

It's possible that the hosting of the site has undergone some upgrades or changes (not the actual computer it is running the site, but the domain hosts)

This may have meant some DNS changes that have slowly propagated around the world.

Yeah probably just a DNS cache issue. On a PC one would go to Start and type in cmd and hit Enter, then type into the black box ipconfig/flushdns and hit Enter. That should take care of it. On an iPhone or iPad just put the device in airplane mode for 5-10 seconds.

My last fully functioning day was last Saturday, 3/4. After that I could access the site for a few minutes in the morning and then it would crap out for the rest of the day. I tried three computers and my mobile, using Chrome, IE, Firefox; they all had the same results. Cleared cache and history and cookies - everything I could think of but nothing seemed to work except waiting until the next morning. Today it's running like RF said, hot and fast - no issues.

Personally I haven't had a single issue (and I'm on this site a LOT :)), but it's clear many people are not so lucky.

RF, maybe you should contact your Domain host and ask if they are doing any sort of maintenance that would affect the resolution of the domain name. (if you haven't already done so of course..)

It's getting better every day. Even at 4:30 this morning when I had to go put oil in my generator, which has been going for over two days now after the 60-70 MPH winds knocked out over one million people's power and blew a bunch of shingles off my roof right above the library portion of my house. But the roof has been patched, they promise power back on by Sunday evening, and Palaver seems to be working fine again. Only downer is I wasn't chosen to buy the new limited edition King/Chizmar book, of which I have mixed emotions because I can't really afford it but I want it anyway! Life goes on.

Correct.
It's a crappy workaround but you can (per a guru here, I'd have never figured it out):

1. when you open the edit page on the right next to the box there is the editor section A/A click that then click preview article and it will appear.
2. Navigate to settings > general Settings > Miscellaneous Options > Message Editor Interface: and change it to standard.
That will change it to the old school editor that most of us are used to. If you like the new editor then you can use #1 or swap to Chrome :)

Insecure password warning in Firefox

This is a new feature that is available starting in Firefox version (https://support.mozilla.org/kb/find-what-version-firefox-you-are-using) 51.

Firefox will display a grey lock icon with a red strike-through in the address bar, when a login page you’re viewing does not have a secure connection. This is to inform you that if you enter your password it could be stolen by eavesdroppers and attackers.

Starting in Firefox version 52, you will also see a warning message when you click inside the login box to enter a username or password.
https://hwsfp35778.i.lithium.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/3148i2631586262420C98/image-size/medium?v=1.0&px=400

What can I do if a login page is insecure?

If a login page for your favorite site is insecure, you can try and see if a secure version of the page exists by typing https:// before the url in the location bar. You can also try to contact the web administrator for the site and ask them to secure their connection.
Not recommended: You can also continue to log in to the website even if the connection is insecure, but do so at your own risk. If you do go this route, try to use a unique password or a password that you don’t also use for other important sites.
About insecure pages

Pages that need to transmit private information, such as credit cards, personal information and passwords, need to have a secure connection to help prevent attackers from stealing your information. (Tip: A secure connection will have "HTTPS" in the address bar, along with a green lock icon (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-tell-if-my-connection-is-secure#w_green-padlock_2).)
Pages that don’t transmit any private information can have an unencrypted connection (HTTP). It is not advised to enter private information, such as passwords, on a web page that shows HTTP in the address bar. The information you enter can be stolen over this insecure connection.
Note for developers

For developers looking to learn more about this warning, please see this page (https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Web/Security/Insecure_passwords). The page explains when and why Firefox shows this warning, and will also provide some details on how to fix the issue. For more information, see this blog post (https://blog.mozilla.org/tanvi/2016/01/28/no-more-passwords-over-http-please/) and this Site Compatibility document (https://www.fxsitecompat.com/en-CA/docs/2016/insecure-password-input-warning-will-be-enabled-by-default/).

This is a meaningless message with regards to this site. All it is saying is that the site does not have an alternative https address and port 443 (or similar) has not been opened.

HTTPS access is mainly associated with entering of payment Information. As the site does not accept any form of direct payment (even the contribution widget redirects to a payment gateway) no-one should have any concerns over security.

As long as it is smaller than 200x200 then it should load. I use a free app called PhotoScape (http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/download.php)to reduce photos and other simple edits like cropping.

On Windows, I generally R-Click, choose Edit. Crop the image so that it is square. Then you can choose 'Resize', select 'Pixels', change the larger number to 200, which should adjust the smaller (if there is one) appropriately. Then File>Save As.

You should be able to use it then. If you're on a Mac, then I have no idea!

Turn your phone to landscape orientation and zoom a bit in on the screen. When you see the Gallery word, touch just left of the "G", you should then be taken to the Gallery. This is on an android. No idea about (cr)apple phones.

Good man! Been seeing a lot of this just recently.

One way to get rid of the double post if it happens to you is to edit the second one and, in the lower right corner there's a "Delete" button. Just click that, answer yes when it asks you if you want to delete the post. I've done this a few times.

Obviously it hasn't been fixed (otherwise I wouldn't be mentioning it), but I'm aware of and unhappy with the duplicate posts problem. Working on it.

When I visit Sir_Bomme's NSFW art thread I get a funny feeling in my pants. Maybe I need to adjust my trouser settings.

I just changed a board setting to see if it helps, makes matters, worse, does nothing.

I haven't seen any duplicate posts lately, nor any adverse effects from the change I made.

Is it just me or does clicking Edit Post takes you to a new page to edit your post, and does not pop open the editing field right there on the page?

Hey RF, can you take a look at this issue some are having with Netflix links starting here: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?20798-Netflix&p=1085518&viewfull=1#post1085518

And the Edit Post is still happening for me, weird.

Do we think 5 upload slots is enough? It’s an easy change to add more, I just didn’t want to overload the UI too much.
