I've been trying to be a "Good Boy" and restrict my HF posts to the official HF threads, but this seems very pertinent to the topic so I'm going to make an exception. There is a rare piece of, Jae Lee art available from the HF donated by none other than our own "Aronstg". It is rather stunning and there is no official thread as I post this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201272993802?_trksid=p2060778.m1431.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Also, this is a bit of a trial run. If this piece does well at auction we may see additional support for the HF next year. Mr. Lee will be watching so let's try and show him what an awesome community we have here!!!

You may recall I got a flatsigned copy of the IT: 25th Anniversary Gift Edition early last week from Matt (Lot Guy) that had a cool original drawing of Pennywise in it signed Amanda. The full set of pics are under the Pride and Joy forum.
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/Remarque1.jpg

This weekend I finally found the full details on the artist of that original drawing! Her name is Amanda Rachels and she is actually a comic artist from Mobile, AL! I just happened to see an EBay auction for a gift edition of Dr. Sleep that had a drawing in it by her, and compared the art/signature, and voila! HERE (http://www.ebay.com/itm/191537386022?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) is the link to that auction.

I did more Googling, and found lots more info on her. She actually co-created a comic series called Clown Town, and I saw another interesting drawing of Pennywise she has done here: http://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bw3VndUIUAAbyrN.jpg:large

Since I am a comic art fan as well as a King fan, it makes this rare King-igned copy even more enjoyable to me personally, knowing the full details!

I don't think that I ever got a picture up, or at least a decent one of my first remarque. This is from a Scribner 1st ed Doctor Sleep by Glenn Chadbourne. It's modest, but I think it is a great one for the book, and I enjoy it more now than when I first got it.

Hi, this is my first ever Remarque, and really pleased with it. I received this as a Christmas present, which my family thought odd to ask for, but they don't get the whole collectables obsessions much anyway!

It is the scene where Jack drink drives and runs over a bicycle, and thinking he hit a child scares him enough to try sobering up and straightening himself out.....well for a short while!!!

I took part in a Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/timdoyle/unreal-estate-television-pop-art-book-by-artist-ti) Tim Doyle (http://www.mrdoyle.com/) organized for his art book UnReal Estate (http://store.nakatomiinc.com/unrealestatethebook.aspx). I was able to snag the top reward, which was a commission of an unreal estate. I obviously had to pick something SK related and went with The Dark Tower. He posted a progress shot yesterday and I'm super excited with how it's coming out so far and wanted to share. Will post the final product once it's complete.

I am over the moon with my latest remarque. This is courtesy of Alan M Clark. I had asked him to do a Pennywise remarque in a gift edition of IT. I guess I was expecting a pretty standard remarque so when I got this I was overjoyed. I suck at taking pictures but it looks great in person and it's a rather large remarque compared to the other IT remarques I've seen in the past. I love seeing great artists put down their own rendition of everyone's favorite clown.

Nice! I'm glad you got in on one of his great deals and I really enjoy that snake eyes remarque.. especially for the price.

One interesting thing is he doesn't seem to have a lot of consistency in his signature. I'm reviewing the signature underneath my remarque and yours and they are very different but they both have that the AC mark next to them. Just an observation I made.

It's not Pennywise (or IT), but I like it!

I noticed that about the signatures too. The ACs are nearly identical, but the signatures are dramatically different. I have a print of his from The Mist on my wall and it looks closer to the signature on my remarque than on yours. Weird...

Alright guys and gals. I'm trying to have Vinny Chong do some remarques for me, but it seems that shipping the books to him (and back) is going to be perhaps more than the art itself. Those of you that commission remarques more regularly than I do, what is your thoughts to having him do them on loose sheets and then tipped into the books? 4 of them are just Gift Editions, but I do also have a S/L Doctor Sleep that I was going to send. It also depends on how much my local book specialist would charge for the tip-ins. Am I doing more harm than good, particularly with Doctor Sleep?

Thoughts?

Yeah, I would seriously recommend shipping the actual books and absorbing the s/h costs. Ship all the books at once to consolidate cost and ask to receive them back the same way. Just my three beans.

On top of what Bill has suggested, I would also recommend shipping the books without their traycase / slipcase to lower the weight and therefore postage cost. Also send the books without their dust jackets so that they cannot get damaged in transit.

Yes, I've removed all the DJ/Slipcovers. My current box is 10 pounds, even more if I add the new SubPress Shining that I just got. Shipping will be as much or more than Vinny's charge. What a sham(e)! I'll buckle down and do it, I put my name down on his list at least a year ago, so I'm really looking forward to it, and glad that I had as many to get done as I have. Thanks guys.

Edit: I got it figured out, I think. All told it's a 13 lb box (12X12X8). If I'm getting the right calculation on USPS, I can use Priority Mail International at a $100.15.....which is much more reasonable than what I'd been seeing before. I guess I'll see tomorrow when I get it to the PO. I'll make sure I have it calculated on my phone to show them when I take it to the desk (AGAIN!)

Randall Flagg

Keep in mind that $100.15 is one way. You likely will want the books back.

Yep, already have a pricing on that too. Much better coming back than going. Thanks for the reminder though.

I can't wait to share the results. I've got ideas for most of the books, but since I haven't read 20th Century Ghosts yet, I don't know what to suggest to Vinny except for the Balloon Boy. Anyone have an interesting suggestion for the 2nd copy I'm sending him?

Is it standard practice to 'tip' an artist for remarques that you've commissioned? I certainly want to do that if it's appropriate, but don't know what the norm is.

Kingfan24
09-15-2017, 03:59 AM
I would lean toward no - they charged you for what they think their work is valued at. It's nice you are appreciative but I would not start this trend.

jsmcmullen92
09-15-2017, 05:01 AM
I agree with Nick on this one. If they added extra items outside the scope of originally quoted work then it may be justified but if you buy art from them and they deliver I would just pay the price.

WeDealInLead
09-15-2017, 06:19 AM
Good points. Something to consider is if you're planning on getting something else by the same artist. I don't think they expect a tip - you paid for something and received exactly that. If you do leave a little something extra, you can bet you'll be getting preferential treatment and something extra when you go back. This isn't unheard of, just consider the CDCC, different direct artist-fan avenues such as Patreon, tattoo artists, artists at conventions etc. If you pay the exact amount, you'll get exactly that and all is right with the world. I know when I walk into my tattoo shop, they'll stay open after hours and bend over backwards to make me happy. "You scratch my back, I scratch yours" is a pretty decent thing for everyone involved. Again, this all depends on what your future plans are.

I'm in LOVE with this one. It creeps me out SOOO much!

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/967/img535resized.jpg
An excellent remarque from the cover image.

Next up is a Family Portrait in my Doctor Sleep S/L that Vinny did a great job of organizing to show the family relationships.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/820/medium/img530resized.jpg

Next is what I had him do in the Trade Doctor Sleep that already had a Chadbourne 'Fly Guy' on the endpapers (shown). Vinny flipped the perspective and we get to see Dan & Azzy at the hospice:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/799/medium/img532resized.jpg
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/799/medium/img533resized.jpg

Finally, I think my favorite of the bunch. I really enjoyed some of the party guests that Vinny AND Don Maitz had done, so I asked for something in that direction. He did a great job (and I think it shows that he's maybe watching season 2 of 'Preacher'. ;)

I just checked my email correspondence with Alex from when I had my book remarqued back in 2011. The whole process from sending the book, Alex adding four remarques (when I only asked for one!), and then getting the book back, took about three weeks.

I remember David’s frustrations with him as well, but I had a great experience working with him.

I have dealt with Alex many a time and he can be excruciatingly slow returning the final product once finished. I found great success when paying him 30% up front, 30% when he shows pictures of completed project, and 40% upon my receipt of the finished product.

So there were only 26 of these sets made I think. But as you can see, they are not signed by King. But I like them a lot.
So those are all that I have.

All -

A message from Don Maitz regarding some of his remarques!

"I have some information for people who have books with my watercolor remarques from a few years ago, where the paper has puckered or buckled which is apparent on the back side of the art. Experimentation has revealed that a slightly dampened paper towel lightly rubbed on the backside to very lightly dampen the paper will help the process of flattening the art when a protective sheet of wax paper is placed over the watercolor art and a sheet of glass (or something similarly thin, clean and hard is placed behind the art on the slightly damped backside). Close the book and a stack of books placed on top overnight will flatten the paper considerably. If there are still ripples in the paper, repeat the process using a Very lightly dampened paper towel. I have gotten the paper stock completely flat using this method."

A remarque question....
What do you prefer when you like the coverillustration and
a interior illustration from the same artist in one book and you want both as remarques ?
Both 2 remarques in one S/L book or is it better to buy the
S/L book 2 times for one remarque each?

Personal choice. I would prefer one large remarque in each book, but I also have some CD ones with 3 in the same book.
