He is one of the rarest and most reclusive artist out there that worked on a DT project. This sellers price isn't off base at all. I've been secretly holding back a remarque that Dave did for me over a year ago. I've turned down more money for my remarque than the seller you mention is offering it for sale.

Anyone saying that isn't an elaborate Remarque for the money, needs to understand, that is how Dave draws, that type of brush pen drawing has made him famous and sought out. The group lucky enough to grab what Betts is putting out there today, just kicked up your collection another notch.

For anyone interested, Tomas at skcollector.com sent an email that Mark Geyer is having a sale on remarques for Rose Madder or The Green Mile.

Here's the link: http://www.etsy.com/shop/MarkEdwardGeyer?ref=pr_shop_more

Personally, I prefer it when the artist shows off their range a little more by doing unique remarques, rather than everyone gets the same one (Glenn Chadbourne is a great example of being unique), but it's still cool to get an original sketch on a 1st ed or S/L no matter what.

I only know of four, maybe five that exist. Michael does not like to do anything with that book because of the value. He once told Audrey, "what if I mess it up, we just can't get another one", I told Audrey to tell him, "Michael, you could spit in the book and we would all think it's art"

Next, Shawshank Redemption by Vincent Chong (I forgot who had this done, probably 6-8 months ago now ... but I saw yours and had to have it!). I had him do it in the same copy of Stephen King Goes to the Movies as he did my Low Man in Yellow Coat. The man does a helluva Rita Hayworth!

She did do a wonderful job!! I kinda like the fact that her art is more, how should I say, cerebral? than others. She has many layers to her pieces, which I think is very cool. She makes you think, which is a very good thing. Erin, is definitely "Thought-provoking" and that is very cool!!! She should have a very profitable and prolific future ahead of her. IMHO

Both words have "I" as the second letter, and "N" as the third letter.
Fetch has 1 vowel and 4 consonants. but dogs onlyhear fech! (one vowel, 3 consonants and an exclamation point) Just kidding on that one

I agree completely. The level of detail is really just amazing, you should see it in person ... this is the kind of art that I really love, something that makes you keep looking closer and closer over and over again. Like Tomas at SK Collector said to me, it reminds you of a bit of Dameron's work on the scale and detail. Compare to the McKean works -- I know, I know ... you can't compare artists or styles ... -- there is no comparison! (LoL, IMHO, of course). The time and effort that she put into it is obvious ... and most humbly and greatly appreciated!

I actually like and approve of the term "sketchy-doodle." It is "remarque" that is consistently misused.

bast_imret

I use "sketchy-doodle" to indicate a drawing that's just a little doodle (Whelan KA) versus a whole drawing or sketch.

Anyway, here's the doodle that king added to Dameron's sketch:

I love the Green Mile remarques. I remember when they were offered, I was under the impression that he would be doing small remarques. I even thought he would be reusing the same images. The Mouse, The Chair, etc. Oh well. :(

King just sketchy-doodled an addition to Dameron's Jake/Oy remarque in my copy of Wastelands! Pics forthcoming.
Bob goes apoplectic and tries to prevent "sketchy-doodled" (along with "remarque") from entering the collecting lexicon.

Sounds like a "Remar-ka-doodle" to me!!!

"Snooping?" Nope--I enjoy reading these exchanges, I learn quite a bit about books and collecting, and I like to know what collectors and other artists are thinking about these things. To answer your question, Shannon, I try to do a unique remarque in each book. Not only would it get quite dreary drawing the same thing over and over and over again--where's the fun in that?--collectors trust that I will do a decent drawing in their book, and they spend hard-earned (I assume) funds to have an unusual, carefully-done work. I like combining a bit of humor with horror--are any of you also fascinated with that combination?--so the creepy, gore- and muck-spattered clown, grinning happily and juggling small skulls, drawn in a soft almost dreamy style struck me as a good mix. I know it's not a scene from the book, but it seems like when ol' P'wise is on his own time, just kickin' it at home down in the Barrens, he might enjoy singing a tune and juggling some Georgie-bones.

Yeah, I know what ya mean, Shannon. I've spoken with her and the recurring image has to do with her approach to the art. She is not an illustrator perse'. According to Jill she is more of a "Conceptual Artist" which, if I understand correctly means that she thoroughly immerses herself in the source material and arrives at certain "concepts" for her work. IDK if I explained that all succinctly but hopefully you get the gist of it. I have learned quite a bit about "Art" through my dealing's and they are fascinating folk!!!!

BTW, this is my second Bauman Remarque. She also did a remarque (The Tiger) in my signed 1/1 of TDZ!!!

Thanks for the kind words, Bdwyer19. It's only possible because Mark Geyer and Erin Wells are such wonderful people to deal with. Since my experience in working with Don Maitz with his extra large full color remarques, it seems my preference now (if possible) is to get all my remarques in color.

He self-published a collection called It's For You, so I went ahead and ordered a copy from him for a whopping $12 (S/L 300 copies). He included a small remarque in my copy:

IF a lettered or S/L version was planned by the publisher from the get go to have an artist(s) do an original piece(s) in the book I would be interested, but IMO adulterating a Lettered King book with a Remarque would not be desirable.

The only S/L I have in posession that's remarqued is my Desperation S/L with a large and detailed Maitz pencil remarque (shown below). I like it very much and have no intention of selling it anyway. All the rest of my 24 remarqued books are in 1st edition or Gift Editions.

I have several first edition, gift edition, and yes, 11 S/L & 1 Lettered remarqued. The remarqued S/L's and lettered Riding The Bullet are very special to me with a story behind each one. So for the new member here asking about IT S/L and possibly getting it remarqued, you do what your collecting heart tells you. As for the mention of value....does it add, take away? I wouldn't take a million dollars for my S/L Blackhouse remarqued by Rick Berry and the stories and evening we shared when he dedicated the drawing to my wife and I. That goes the same with my Hale, Whelan, Chadbourne, Wells, etc. Just to name a few.

IF a lettered or S/L version was planned by the publisher from the get go to have an artist(s) do an original piece(s) in the book I would be interested, but IMO adulterating a Lettered King book with a Remarque would not be desirable.

Good word...ADULTERATING.

Adulterate: To debase or make impure.

To each there own. Who knows, someday I might immerse my "The Stand" S/L in urine and call it art-I suppose now it would be called copycat. Once you own the book you can do whatever you please-but....if you EVER want to sell it, only the market will dictate. Who knows, a "The Stand" S/L without a box sold for a shockingly high price (although the auction never seems to have 'consumated' the act).
My guess is that if a person could produce a legitimate Berni Wrightson signed and dated "remarqued" copy from 1990-1991, that it would fetch a tidy sum. What if there were only 1 (of 26) copies of the Firestarter Lettered Edition with Wightson art?
<----------------------Rushed off to have any/all Lettered Editions remarqued.....
The market evolves.
The only caveat I would consider is that once a book is drawn in, it forever is different-for better or for worse.

I think it's a personal choice, and yes, the market will dictate good decision or bad if it's ever sold. For me a remarqued S/L would be a great score, and a remarqued Lettered phenomenal. Perhaps you're point of view is a matter of whether you're a remarque collector or an S/L collector? Or, god forbid, a completist purist. I love my IT S/L with the 4-page panorama remarque, and chortle at the thought that it makes the book impure! I am (still) eagerly awaiting my Lettered The Passage that Jill Baumann will be remarquing!

I would not want a remarque in my S/Ls either. Incidently CD are offering remarques in the Lettered editions of FDNS and IT. I will not be getting any in mine.

When was that announced? I just checked the CD site, but couldn't find any reference to that offer. Granted, I don't own any lettered editions, but was just curious.

It was in an e-mail update sent to people who ordered the lettered editions. They wanted us to send them another $800 or so to get the drawings done. I am not going to do it.

Finally got internet hookup yesterday, so can show off the latest acquisitions!

First, Christine by Gerhard Axmann, original illustrator for the 1983 German version; got this about a month or so ago courtesy of our good friend Frank

And finally, just arrived in the mail an hour ago, a phenomenal work by Erin Wells in the IT S/L (I now officially am looking for #186s, by the way). I literally spent 5 minutes going "Wow, wow, wow".

Here are some images from a project I have been working on with Mark Geyer. I was inspired to approach Mark about this small project after seeing some beautiful colored pencil drawings that he did for Julianna (fsmdr). After some discussion about medium he decided to do these in colored pencil over ink, using earth tones and muted greens for the color. The idea was to use a "gift set" from Subterranean Press and to get a drawing in each book that reflected something that happened in that particular book. I like the way it turned out. My pictures aren't the best....a tripod would have helped clear up some of the lacking detail that my handheld photo technique blurred a bit. But still, you get the idea. I think he did a great job. Also, I was getting jealous seeing all the cool stuff posted in this thread and thought I needed to get on the ball.

Part 1: The Two Dead Girls - Posse with rifles down by the river under trestle bridge. (My second favorite).

Part 2: The Mouse on the Mile -

Part 3: Coffey's Hands - Screen door off its hinges.

Part 4: The Bad Death of Eduard Delacroix - Lightning behind Paul's desk.

Part 5: Night Journey - Truck on night journey.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/geyergm5.jpg

Part 6: Coffey on the Mile - Paul Edgecomb walking the prison grounds, pondering Coffey's fate, ominous clouds. (My favorite).

<<<Part 2: The Mouse on the Mile - >>>

This is also my second favourite. Maybe because of the film, which I think was a masterpiece interpretation of King's work. The more I look at these images, the more I recollect how well Darabont sold us the story of the Green Mile through King's eyes.

I agree with Bob about my favourite. Part 6: Coffey on the Mile - "Paul Edgecomb walking the prison grounds, pondering Coffey's fate, ominous clouds."

This reminds me of a time when I walked alone, under the clouds, deciding on the fate of several families' futures, during difficult times. I had to decide which persons had a chance of "survival" and which ones were left to "the dogs". That will live with me forever.

Nice work Mark.

Would anyone consider remarques to devalue a book?

Bad Penny
08-09-2012, 09:22 AM
Not me, for sure - then again, I'm biased (and likely bipopar to boot) - I adore remarques and believe they enhance the value of a book (but that's just me)

carlosdetweiller
08-09-2012, 09:30 AM
My opinion - If done by an artist who actually illustrated the book then I think additional artwork enhances the value. But if done by an artist not otherwise involved in illustrating the book then that is a big no-no, especially if the book is an S/L.

I remember back when this whole "remarque" (gosh, I hate that term) craze got started with respect to King books. Michael Whelan offered to do drawings in the artist edition of DT7 for about $400. He was going to do no more than 15 or so (I forget the exact number). The offer sold out immediately and so they could do more Audrey called me and a few other collectors and asked if we would send in books we already had for our drawings rather than use up the limited copies they had on hand. I agreed and she said I could send either an artist edition or an S/L. I thought about it for a while and decided not to send an S/L. It struck me then (and now) that these things are better done in trade or artist editions rather than an S/L.

Thelangoleer
08-09-2012, 10:52 AM
That was my next thought - I have a S/L SODV2 remarqued by chadbourne - I think it would enhance the value as well but I'm not sure if I should have it done to my other S/L now. I just got a Blockade Billy S/L that I think would look neat remarqued but I'm not really sure if I should.

Randall Flagg
08-09-2012, 11:42 AM
I think a great remarque, in a trade significantly increases value. Personally, a remarque in a S/L would devalue the book. I just can't imagine wanting a beautiful piece by Berni Wrightson in my S/L "The Stand". I suppose if I owned two copies, having one with original art would be unique, but I'd prefer an original frame-able piece.

Our opinions overlap like Venn diagrams.

...If done by an artist who actually illustrated the book then I think additional artwork enhances the value. But if done by an artist not otherwise involved in illustrating the book then ......then it is unlikely to add any value for me, and runs the risk of devaluing the book.

I think a great remarque, in a trade significantly increases value...I agree.

As also mentioned upthread, I think original art generally adds more value when it is in an Artist/Gift Edition than it does in an S/L.

AKC
08-09-2012, 05:05 PM
I think it depends on the Book.

I have Matching LETTERED SODs with full page Chadbourne remarques. I think in these volumes, which showcase Chadbourne's artwork just as much as King's stories, the full color, unique remarques add to the value of these.

Totally agree with RF's comments below. It depends on the S/L (IMHO).....
