Ralph, very nice Whelan drawing.

Did he do anything unusual for the moon? in the background, in my drawing there is a Luminescence to the moon/sun? that I did not even notice at first, very subtle.

Thanks everyone.

The moon/sun is actually the background of the paper. It's untouched but really stands out. But, his eye's glow luminescence. My camera takes away from the glow but it's there.

Whelan is absolutely Incredible.

I had asked Alan M Clark about doing remarques in the upcomming books he has done art for and I see Lonely Roads selling a few done in Riding the Bullet, is anyone here interested in me seeing if he will do remarques in the now shipping Dark Tower Concordance? If so what price would be reasonable (Alan asked me and I figured checking with others here would be the best idea).

I'm interested in a copy as long as I don't have to send payment to Cemetery Dance or work with them in any way.

I think the price would depend on the size and complexity of the drawing Alan is proposing to do in the books. Just to state the obvious a full page drawing would be worth more than a thumbnail size sketch.

Are you thinking of something like Don Maitz and Ned Dameron have done recently? Or more like the smaller sketches of about one to two inches?

When I talked to him I was thinking of full pages like Don and Ned have done and I sent him a link to those threads I know he has been having money issues (his wife was laid off) and suggested this as a way to make some extra money unfortunately when I suggested it neither book was available but now with the concordance shipping I figured I would check interest before I emailed him again.

I'm waiting on a Lettered Concordance. I'd LOVE to have him add one to it!

I'd could ship it when I get it or have it sent to him by them or ???

If he doesn't want to wait for the Lettered Edition to come out, I would still like my numbered version done and could send that. :)

You tell me! I'd throw whatever everyone agrees is the amount to compensate him for his time, effort and creativity for sure!!

Here is one of my new favorite remarqued sets... The Colorado Kid with a special "lettered" set by Chadbourne, Potter and Miller in their corresponding books!

How much does each artist charge for their remarques????

It varies obviously:

The Ned Dameron ones that tippy4 is auctioning start at $500.

The Don Maitz ones that Juliana auctioned sold at $395 each.

Michael Whelan will charge $300+ for a small one, $1000+ for an elaborate one

The Colorado Kid ones went for I think $200 for the set of 3. Individual ones went for $80-$100 each by Chadbourne, Potter and Miller

That's what I can recall off the top of my head.

Mark, the cost varies by artist, and also by how elaborate of a drawing you want.

demorgan

I figured that. I was just wondering if someone could give me an idea of how much they cost...big, small. etc..instead of emailing each artist and asking them.

Sam
04-18-2010, 08:45 AM
Between $25 for a small remarque from some artists to $1000+ for a large remarque from some artists. That's how much they cost.

You really should just email each artist instead as rates and moods change. Always be polite because even if you're paying them to do this, they are still doing you a favor by doing this. It takes time away from their work (hence the reason you are paying them) and if you were to be rude they may decide to not do it, or worse yet, do something that you would not want in the book. (I saw something like that actually happen at a comic convention because a fan was very rude to people standing in line and the artist didn't appreciate it.)

Haha....what did the guy put in the comic???

But, yeah, as long as you approach it in a professional way, and look at it like it's a business transaction with you purchasing a product requiring time and talent, then it should be fine...I think 99.9 percent of artists would be happy to at least approach the idea.

The flip side is I imagine nothing would annoy an artist more than acting like she or he's a trained chimp doodling on a napkin for cheap money - it's their JOB, so act as such...

Sam
04-18-2010, 10:25 AM
The artist drew a picture of a penis because, as he put it, the guy was "...being a dick and when you act like a dick, you get fucked." I thought it was funny as hell.

I don't remember the artist's name because he wasn't one of my artists. I DO remember the drawing was in a graphic novel though.

One day, I'm going to get a book signed and inscribed "To the ebay auction winner" just for the hell of it.

The mood of the artist at the time is an important factor. I have been with Michael Whelan multiple times getting remarques for people (and myself). Sometimes he is in a sketchy mood and other times not. You get what you get.

This one I got for free out of the kindness of Ned's heart for which I am forever greatful. I've tried to repay him by buying several other remarques from him.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Roland_Aunt_Talitha1.jpg

This one by Ned was worth every penny I paid, and then some IMO.

And these next two by Michael Whelan are two of my favorites by him that are in my collection.

A couple of weeks ago I sent my US and UK hardcover copies of THE GREEN MILE to Mark Geyer. I got them back the other day and like the drawings that Mark did in them quite a bit. He has a different style that really sets him apart. The one thing about his drawings, though, is that they almost look like they are printed in the book. If someone weren't told that it was an original drawing they would think it was just a printed illustration.

The drawing in the US (Scribner)edition:

From the Overlook's bookstore newsletter :

ROSE MADDER Signed and Remarqued !
ROSE MADDER. By Stephen King.

Signed and Remarqued by artist Mark Geyer.

Remarque illustration is a rose, with Mr. Geyer's signature underneath. Very Nice!

Only pink-red Roses are embossed on the front board. Stephen King's name is much smaller than the title logo, something that hasn't happened since his first books were published. Frontispiece illustration by artist Mark Geyr.

Thanks for posting that, HW.

I don't own any copy of ROSE MADDER whatsoever, so this interests me. I would buy at $50, but the $75 price may be over my threshold of pain.

It says "First Edition" but does Overlook also mean it's a First Printing?

Also has anyone seen the size of the rose doodles?

Without a clear picture of the original art by Geyer, this is rather un-"remarquable". :beat:

Just a reminder--when Overlook sold the Green Mile first/first hardcovers with the Geyer remarque of Mr. Jingles, all the books that I've heard of had a remainder mark on the pages. (Mine is on the top of the book.) I'd verify that if you're considering getting this Rose Madder volume.

Hey! I just learned that a customer of mine is buying a Michael Whelan remarque that was one of the original DT VII ones, but not one of the ones that Tomas has up on his site. I will get an image shortly (as will Tomas), but this one is Roland standing in front of a door with a saguaro cactus in the background. My customer is buying it fropm the original owner who lives in AZ.

John

What do you mean by a remainder mark?
If only they had an exemple of remarque on their page...

@wizard: what is AZ? Arizona?

What do you mean by a remainder mark?

It is usually a thick line made by a marker pen on the page edges. The shop gets money back from the publisher for any unsold copies and the remainder mark is put on to show that a refund was issued for that copy.

Sometimes the remainder mark is spray paint on the page edges.

The remainder mark on The Green Mile edition that I got was a thick black line on the top of the pages.

Talking about remarques, of the ones made for Little Sisters of Eluria, very few ended showing up the surface.

Karen, do you know more or less if it's about to be sold out or there's still plenty of copies?

Got my remarqued Rose Madder today.

It is a 1st/1st with no "remainder" mark.

Nice little rose (similar in size to the mouse remarque on The Green Mile) on the title page with his signature.

I'm happy with my purchase. :)

I thought this was pretty cool (or hot!). It's a Green Mile remarque by Mark Geyer. Scribner's logo (the flame) is from the opposite side of the page. Mark positioned the electric chair so the flame shows where a persons head would be.

I just wanted to say I have learned my lesson I will NEVER buy a remarqued book from anyone other than the artist direct (no CD sold remarques). When I had the issue with the McVey remarque from CD I took the 75.00 credit Mindy gave me to buy the Glenn Chadbourne remarqued SOD I and II. Received the remarqued SOD I a week ago and it was a 1/4 page drawing, nice but nothing like every other remarque I have seen from Glenn Chadbourne (including the fantastic remarques from Glenn on the previous page), then today I got the copy of Blockade Billy remarqued by Glenn Chadbourne and another small drawing (shoe with spikes). Again I am not complaining about the artists drawings but I am no longer going to get screwed by the middleman.

I'd like to respectfully disagree on the point of buying through a secondary seller. True, it is hard to judge from buying a remarque 'blind' without seeing the work first, in the case like CD. Sometimes, things fall far from your expectations. Even buying direct from the artist, I usually ask on the approximate size, if it is in color, etc. My opinion is if you can see ahead of time the remarque itself, you already know what you will get. Just my 2 cents.

Sam
10-13-2010, 08:42 PM
This wouldn't be because you were the secondary seller would it Juliana?:P

Seriously though, what you AND tippy have provided is something that has been rare, and that something being an advance look at the remarque prior to the opening of the original sale. Then again, you two were and are dealing with much higher price points than the others I have seen in the past few years too. Believe me, the difference is MUCH appreciated.

Like Sam says what you and Tippy did was different, we saw the remarque before we bought, the ones from CD what I got was different than all the other remarques I have seen from Glenn and I suspect it was because the artist received much less of the money from me than CD did. Thats why I will contact the artist directly rather than going through CD.

BTW while I have just a few remarques in books I have probably 75 drawings commissioned from artists through conventions and ebay and other means of contact (including 2 from Glenn). I have been disappointed maybe a couple of times I really am not as picky as my complaints have sounded, I just seem to have bad luck with CD I guess.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. A full page color remarques are no comparison.

Here is the photo of the Rackham remarque. It sold for close to $11K. Rackham (1867-1939) is very much sough after as a children's book illustrator. His reprinted books are very collectible and a original drawing by him are quite rare.

First edition, limited to 520 copies and signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page. Quarto. 318 pages. Sixteen color plates mounted on cream paper with captioned tissue guards. This copy has a charming original signed drawing by Rackham on the recto of half-title page. Rackham has executed an ink and watercolor caricature of himself in traditional Irish dress, with a clay pipe and shillelagh, conversing with an enrapt crow.

Publisher's quarter vellum with white paper boards. Gilt titles and decoration. Wrapped in double glassine dust jacket. Hinges slightly cracked. Toning to endpapers. Housed in a custom quarter green morocco drop front clamshell box. A near fine copy. From the Estate of John McLaughlin.

Yesterday a very nice comic convention took place in Rosario, one of the largest cities in Argentina (located in another province, 300 km from Buenos Aires). A friend of mine, who is a comic addict, ask me if I'd join him. I said "Sure", and we went yesterday. The big surprise was that, on friday, I googled the list of guests and there were several artists involved that don't usually come to a comic con in Argentina. The list was:

Jim Lee, Brian Azzarello, Will Dennis, Humberto Ramos, Rafael Grampá, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Bá, Rafael Albuquerque, Domingo Mandrafina, Horacio Altuna, Carlos Trillo, Ariel Olivetti, Eduardo Risso and several others.

Then I realized that Rafael Albuquerque was the illustrator of American Vampire! And, lucky me, I received my order of HC ed of American Vampire from Amazon last...friday! LOL.

Well, These are the two remarques I got for me, and the other two my friend got (for other two friends):
