Hi folks. I'd like to give this thread a try. I don't have a lot of things, but I think if I spread it out a bit, I could keep it going for a while.

Most of my stuff many of you will have seen before, but I can tell you what I love about it, what I found interesting, and ask a few questions here and there if I have them.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/cover1.jpg

First up it's Viking's IT proof.

It's such a delicate and beautiful book. 1151 thin pages glued together. Pagenumbers done by hand in the header. In the inside top margin at first, and then it switches to the outside of the top margin from chapter 3.

There is a sticker on the cover specifying the print run, BOMC selection, movie rights and advertising campaign. The publication date and cover price have been filled in at the bottom.

I've talked to John about this some time ago and it seems to be more rare to see them with sticker than without. I'd love to know if anyone has any info on this. Perhaps the ones without the sticker were PC copies, or maybe my copy was sent out rather late, with a sticker slapped on with some recently established facts and figures. I'd also love to find out when exactly this book was ready and distributed. April 1986 at the earliest, June at the latest?

Here's a few pictures of some fun stuff from inside.

The listing of other books by King forgot to include the Bachman titles:

Page 429: the kiwis are escaping!
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/429.jpg

Page 551: when grownup Ben does his walking tour in chapter 11, he visits the library. As Pennywise is messing with him from the upstairs landing, Ben grabs a random book to withdraw and get out as quickly as he can.
It turns out to be one of the books he borrowed on the day school let out in June 1958, when Bowers chased him into the Barrens. Ben looks at the library card inside:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/551.jpg

His own name is missing here. Perhaps they considered putting in an illustration of his "childish signature, written in heavy pencil strokes", or it could as easily have been a simple mistake.
Also: they changed the date from July 5 1958 to July 9 1958. Ben could keep the book four days longer.

Page 1133: hyphen heaven
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/1133.jpg

Page 591: grownup Richie is walking around Derry and sees a billboard put up by Pennywise for Richie's "All-Dead" Rock Show.
Here's a listing for the members of the Band:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/591.jpg

BOBBY FULLER is listed as bass player. King (or his editor) changed this on the galleys to PHIL LINOTT, (see the first edition on page 589).
Why was this changed? I'm no expert, but I read on the internet that Bobby Fuller wasn't a bass player, but rather a guitar player and band leader, and King may have preferred a real bass player listed in this spot.
Phil Lynott, bassist of Thin Lizzy, died on the 6th of January 1986. This was probably pretty fresh in King's mind when he was going through the galleys.
The only issue now is that the events with the grownups in Derry take place on the 30th of May 1985, when Phil Lynott would still have been alive.

Very neat, Vincent! Thanks for posting.

I don't collect proofs, but IT is the one I'd love to own someday. Love it when members post their pics of it.

So pleased you have started a collection thread. Life has finally settled down to the normal stresses and I will respond to your earlier email in the next few days. It is always fun to interact with another proof/manuscript collector. Did you pick up any of the Steiner auction manuscripts?

Hi Jeff, thanks for this! I'm glad things have settled down and look forward to hearing from you very much.

The Steiner auction doesn't ring a bell, I'm afraid. Do you have a link for that? In any case, no I didn't :-). There were a lot of great ones in the David Morrell auction. I put in a silent bid the first time around for the auction that ended up being canceled, but bowed out for the online spread-out auction when I saw the estimates of $10.000-$15.000 per manuscript.

Last year I got lucky with a scratch lottery ticket and won a nice sum. I decided to splurge on this signed Stand By Me vinyl.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/album1.jpg

I got lucky with the scratch ticket, and the ebay seller that had this listed got lucky with me.

There's just so much to love about this: King's novella, the movie, the music from the movie, the artwork, the signature. It hangs on my wall and I enjoy it every day. Free money well spent!

Up next is a script for Creepshow.

As you can see on the title page, this is a first draft, written in 1979.

King claims to have written this in a week (if I remember correctly), writing each of the stories in a day. Romero liked this first draft a lot, and King never had to write a second one.

It's 142 pages. I couldn't type 142 pages in a week, let alone write 142 pages.

There are two other Creepshow scripts on ebay right now. They have different covers and are both very expensive, which I don't understand at all.

Hi, Vincent. Just stumbled across your newly created thread! Good stuff, man. I love the Stand by Me LP. I love that movie, the soundtrack, and the story. I saw the movie when it came out in theaters several years before I started reading King. I was around the same age as the actors at the time and it really hit home with me. It will always hold a special place for that reason.

Thanks Brian. I think you're only a couple of years older than me, then. I had just the same experience with the IT miniseries. That blew my head off. I can't remember if I read the book before I saw the miniseries or after. I like to think book first :-). I do remember getting the big hardback from the library.

My new pride and joy:

The original printer's galleys used to produce the US 1st edition of IT.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_0.JPG

Thanks again to Surly for posting the auction link on this site, I would never have found them otherwise. Much appreciated!

It's quite a tall stack of pages:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_4.JPG

These pages were printed on glossy paper, and they rolled out of the machine as one long leaf, chapter per chapter. At the bottom of each page, there is a line along which they were manually cut: "-------CUT HERE-------" Sometimes they were cut straight, sometimes not so straight.

I've read up a bit on how the printing process was done at Donnelley's and Sons during the '80's, but there's much I don't know yet. Any input on this is very very welcome: knowledge you may have, books you could recommend me, people you may know who worked at a printer during that time.

The first department in the production pipeline was in charge of the text. They used a primitive text processor to input it based on the submitted manuscript by Viking. Once they were done, they printed it all out, on one long leaf, leaving blanks for in-text arwork and blank pages for the interleaves for the different parts of the book.

They printed out the different parts of the artwork and the special fonts for the interleaves separately, on a different kind of glossy paper, that was adhesive on one side.

From there the stuff moved to the layout department who created the layout of the special pages by making a collage of the bits and pieces:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_15.JPG

You can see quite a bit of craftsmanship went into this one page. The glossy thin paper was stuck to cardboard, so that the printed parts could be moved around to the right position. The individual letters in "DERRY: THE FIRST INTERLUDE" were cut out and moved so that the lines all aligned properly with the thick line underneath.

Something as simple as a two column table with centered text required quite a bit of work:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_8.JPG

I love this so much. You can see an underneath layer where the titles of the first column were not centered. Blank paper was overlayed, and a tiny rectangle stuck on top, perhaps to cover a smudge, or to make sure everything stayed in place.

Once the artist-layout-person was done, the pages went on to the photography department. There, a hole was punched into the top and bottom of each page.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_6.JPG

This was a way to mount up a page and fix it, so that it could be photographed to produce a negative. The photo was black and white, so any color on the page that was below a certain threshold registered as white. As you can see on the halftitle page above, the paper that was stuck on and the tape used to fix them were quite brown, but apparently this was still well below the threshold and didn't register on the negative.

The negatives were exposed to a printing plate to transfer the image. The plates were wrapped around a cylinder, and printing could begin. The marks in ink you can see on the picture, must have been added after the photo negative was taken. Happy to learn from someone why and when these marks were drawn on.

Now something on the succession of versions of galleys for IT.

Donnelley produced a first version of the book: the first proof. Unbound pages were sent to King for corrections, and the red uncorrected proof we all know was printed. King and his editor Chuck Verrill made hundreds of changes on those proofs: errors still from the manuscript, new printing mistakes, but also lots of changes to the content of the text.

From these corrected proofs, the set of galleys were produced that now sit so beautifully in my office. The negatives and plates were made, and one last proof was created: unbound, but already in signatures, and with the text in blue: "the blues". This wonderful proof is part of jhanic's collection (see here for the post in his collection thread (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?6011-Book-Collection-jhanic-proofs&p=629938&viewfull=1#post629938)). With his permission I share a picture of the proofs:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/JHanic.jpg

The note attached is very interesting: "Please indicate corrections, cleans and fixes to be made on proofs." A final round of changes was made at that time by Viking. They had to be minor, so that the page divisions could stay the same. If a large portion of text would have been cut or added, causing the pagination to change, all subsequent pages needed to be reprinted, rephotographed and new plates made. It would have been a very expensive affair for Viking. I have no idea if "the blues" were sent to King to look through. I presume not.

Still quite a few last-minute changes were made at this stage. On this page for instance:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_10.JPG

Held up to the light, more of the underneath layer comes into view:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_11.JPG

In the right margin it says: "Pull block xx to position as orig[inal]. Cust[omer] did not want recentered".

Changes in the running text were also made. The pages with changes were not printed out in full, but little snippets of text were pasted over:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_13.JPG

Here they "fixed" an incorrect hyphenation and redivided the text over the lines so that the last line looks healthier. No idea what the abbreviation BB stands for, all help much appreciated.

On page 1110 of the first edition, there was an erroneous second dot after "This time." It was cheaper to just stick some tape over it than to reprint the line:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_18.jpeg

"Fixes and cleans" the note mentions. Here and there there are smudges and ink stains that were above the threshold for the black and white photo, and they are whited out with bits of tape. I noticed one ink spot that was not cleaned on page 771:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/ItGalley_19.jpeg

Above the "p" of "Loosen up, Eddie". If you check your first US edition of IT page 771, you'll see the black spot. They missed a required clean there.

Now the printers came to the final part of the job: the pages with changes on them were sent to the photography department to produce a new negative. A new plate was made and placed on the corresponding cylinder. Once this was done, the actual printing of the first editions could begin!

Needless to say I'm pretty enamoured with these galleys. They are a part of the publication history of IT. They show the craftsmanship involved in bookmaking in the era of phototypesetting. It's impressive how much work and care was put into them, and how few mistakes there are in such a long book. They are the crown jewel of my small collection, no doubt.

Hope you enjoyed my post!

Thank you all very much for taking the time to read my long epistle. I'm not much of a photographer, but I'm glad I was able to bring across the impressiveness of the galleys.

Thank you Steve, for the tip on the glass case. I haven't given display much thought, but I should. I have them in three stacks just sitting on a bookshelf right now. It would be great to have the three stacks in a glass case that I could tilt, so that the sides and the front are visible.

Will definitely put a picture up here once I've figured that out.

The Viking one you can still buy from leonardshoup.com. I bought it at half the price he has it listed at now, he just doubled the number after part 1 of the IT movie came out.

The Signet one popped up on ebay sometime in 2017. I pounced on it immediately and paid the BIN price instead of bidding. I guess I was lucky to be the first to see it.

If anyone remembers hearing the radio advertisement in 1986, I'd love to know what that was like.

If you use it as a mini Frisbee, you'll get some exercise.

If you throw it away, it will be worth $10,000 in five years.

Or...you could listen to it and learn all about that Stephen King guy, whoever he is.

Here are some pictures of my IT UK Proof. It's a beautiful book. A lot sturdier than the US Viking proof. Condition is far from fine, it has been read (twice). It has this issue of this long scratch on the cover at the left edge close to the spine, and I've seen that with a couple of these IT UK Proofs. The one Michael Pasiuk listed on ebay recently had a similar thing.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/UK_Proof1.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/UK_Proof2.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/UK_Proof3.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/UK_Proof4.JPG

The back cover states Hodder did cinema and TV advertising. I'd love to hear if anyone remembers seeing this. It makes me very curious.

I bought it via ebay from a man who owned a bookshop when the novel came out. It was sent to him straight from Hodder. He later drew in the 5 missing pieces of artwork in the book in pencil. I'm sure most collectors would not like this, and it surely devalues the book quite a bit, but I think it's fun. The bookseller read it at the time, and his mother also. Perhaps he drew the art in for his mother's sake.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/UK_Proof5.JPG

The book arrived at my house wearing a dustjacket, identical to the one on the first edition, but shorter at the bottom. He did this himself again. He told me he used to order extra dustjackets from the publisher, and used them to put together a nice window display. Afterwards, he cut one up and slapped it around the proof.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Great proof and background story :) I think it still looks quite nice. The spine of this proof is super prone to fading. The spine of my first copy was light pink! My second copy was in far better condition though, so they are out there. That one is now part of Jon P’s collection.

I hope you find one. Pasiuk57 sold his through ebay not so long ago. If you get one, best not read it, it's filled with spelling mistakes!

I'm really over the moon with my latest score: a photocopy of the manuscript for Needful Things as King sent it to his editor Chuck Verrill at Viking. With corrections by King and suggestions by Verrill throughout. Many thanks to Michael Pasiuk for this.

thank you very much HBJ!

Here is my Dreamcatcher stuff:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_4814.JPG

I liked Dreamcatcher, especially the first chapters: these four best friends since childhood, they're all doing the grownup thing and don't see each other a lot anymore, but they think about each other every day, and all year long they're looking forward to their one week together. This is very recognizable to me. Also, it's kind of like the flipside to IT and The Body, how those kids would be if they'd grown up without all the nastiness that happened. I think King writes friendship like no one else. It's my favorite thing in his books.

The ledger is very cool, you see the writer at work there: making notes on the inside front cover of the ledger. Some things to be added in the second draft, and a drawing and some notes on what happened with the standpipe in IT. The page numbers mentioned, are from the Signet paperback, not the hardback. Nice to know that King looked it up in the paperback.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments!

Here's a few more pictures of the ledger. It was a promotional item for the release of the book: an actual size reproduction of the first 8 pages of the first ledger used by King to write the first draft of the book in longhand. It's a pity it's only 8 pages, of course. But what are you gonna do.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_4815x.JPG

Here's my Bag of Bones stuff.

First up: a photocopy of the typescript of the first draft of BoB:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_9192.JPG

King wrote the first draft of BoB in longhand. He then asked Marsha to key in his manuscript. That was then printed out and given to Russ Dorr, King's trusted proofreader and fact-checker. He wrote comments in the margins here and there, that are also on this photocopy. Fun stuff like "I doubt this" and "talk to me about this". Very cool.

vincent
02-27-2020, 02:02 AM
Next up: the bound "second draft" manuscript, with letter from the editor-in-chief Nan Graham.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_9193.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_9194.JPG

This version will be quite thoroughly rewritten compared to the first draft, taking all of Russ Dorr's comments into account.

vincent
02-27-2020, 02:10 AM
Then came the ARC:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/IMG_9195.JPG

(not in great shape, but hey)

By this point editor Chuck Verrill had gone through the text with King, again making changes to the text. In the author's note, King calls Verrill's editing job on the book "monumental", and "his personal best".

vincent
02-27-2020, 02:12 AM
Then promo stuff was made and sent out. This fridge magnet of the opening page and a cassette tape with an interview.

Seeing all the fantastic inscriptions here made me think it would be so great to have all of these images in one place. Especially inscriptions with dates, because then I could sort them by date and, using the great signing events spreadsheet from this site, link them to particular places.

So I made such a site! Presenting:

www.signedanddated.info (http://www.signedanddated.info)

Books signed by Stephen King during the seventies and eighties, sorted by date of inscription.

I've got 400 plus images at the moment, many of which from your most excellent collection threads.

It's ideal for scrolling through on the toilet.

This could be a cool resource for collectors to check for other books signed on the same day as their book, to compare signatures to from ebay listings, or to get to know King's signature-style from the 70s and 80s.

I'd love to get contributions, corrections, ideas from whoever's so inclined! Via PM or info@signedanddated.info.

If you're not comfortable seeing your signed book in the list, please let me know also.

Really spectacular resource. Great work.

Thank you very much, greatly appreciated! King sure did a lot of book signings between 79 and 83. And you can tell why he stopped going to the World Fantasy Conventions, he was just signing books all day long.

Cool

Thanks Antoni and Zac!

It's been fun. Since launching the site, I've received some great contributions, and have added them.

On Mae's advice, I spent a couple of evenings typing in all of the inscriptions, so now you can call up a transcription by clicking or tapping on an image. Clicking or tapping again gets rid of the overlaying text.
You can also use your browser's search function to find a particular inscription, say "Kaybird" or "Kirby".

I've also started collecting images of 90's inscriptions, but I'll wait till I have a decent amount before I add them.

My newest pride and joy: the original blue proof for the Viking first edition of IT.

A huge thank you to John for giving me the opportunity to buy this, and an equally huge thank you to darkseer (Michael) for picking up the proof and shipping it to me, perfectly packaged and boxed. Thanks!

The blue proof was printed using the printer's repro galleys that I also have in my collection, here are the two side by side:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/5_IMG_0189.JPG

And here's the rest of my pre-publication IT stuff: the 3-volume manuscript photocopy made by Viking, the uncorrected bound proofs, the blue proof and printer's galleys:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/500/medium/6_IMG_0200.JPG

On the title page, the proofreader at Viking asked for the logo to be moved down a bit, and someone at the printer (Dan?) made the change, printed out the new title page, and taped it on top, dating the change to 6/23(/'86), so they were working on this blue proof towards the end of June '86, working towards a publication date of Sept 15th.

I recently tried my hand for the first time at making a short video about Stephen King. Here's the result, it's called "A Month in the Life of Stephen King: 14 October - 14 November 1980".

The video focuses on what King was up to during the "scary season" forty years ago, in 1980. He was working on drafts of IT and Cujo, gave three public lectures, appeared on the Dick Cavett show and went to the World Fantasy Convention.

That's really cool, Vinnie. Turns out back in the day, King pretty much signed everything placed in front of him. Like someone else we know :). The hotel story was funny too.

I tried my hand again at making a video about King's life and works; this time about King's proofreaders, or "first readers" as he calls them in On Writing. I put something together that goes all the way back to his student days.
