View Full Version : Stephen King's new novel: The Institute (September 10, 2019)

No surprise here, the man is a machine, god bless him, hopefully he'll keep to the two books a year schedule for years to come.

https://www.liljas-library.com/article.php?id=6030

King has finished yet another book after The Outsider (and I don't mean Elevation). Here is what the moderator of King's official message board said:

Since he finished THE OUTSIDER (which was already in production behind the scenes when SLEEPING BEAUTIES came out), Stephen has written another book and a few short stories/novellas, one of which (ELEVATION) will be released in November.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that King has a number of books that he started and never finished for one reason or another. Maybe 30 or more. They are in various states of completion. For good or ill, you could see those being released or Joe Hill or someone completing even after King passes away. So there may be a new King book in the works for many more years to come.

No, there's never been any talk about that, so it's safe to say it's a stand-alone novel.

No way for Talisman. Peter has had quite a few health issues those past few years and a few months ago it was announced in an interview if i remember correctly that they didnt find the time yet to work on it...

I still wouldnt be surprise for the battle of jericho. I thought that it would be for the movie release. now i think that it would be with the tv serie release... whenever that is. I dont remember reading about an official green light from amazon though

Formats: Hardcover, eBook
First Edition Release Date: September, 2019

From the Flap:

In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis’s parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there’s no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents—telekinesis and telepathy—who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon. They are all in Front Half. Others, Luke learns, graduated to Back Half, “like the roach motel,” Kalisha says. “You check in, but you don’t check out.”

In this most sinister of institutions, the director, Mrs. Sigsby, and her staff are ruthlessly dedicated to extracting from these children the force of their extranormal gifts. There are no scruples here. If you go along, you get tokens for the vending machines. If you don’t, punishment is brutal. As each new victim disappears to Back Half, Luke becomes more and more desperate to get out and get help. But no one has ever escaped from the Institute.

As psychically terrifying as Firestarter, and with the spectacular kid power of It, The Institute is Stephen King’s gut-wrenchingly dramatic story of good vs. evil in a world where the good guys don’t always win.

Audible has listed the audio running time at 19 hours, which puts it at about the same length as Lisey's Story and The Outsider.

As a UK trade edition collector, I must say it’s a bit exasperating. It was fun when there was just a WHSmith and/or Waterstones variant to collect, but when there are nine or ten variants it gets a bit tiresome.

Collecting them is fun, but it does seem like Hodder is fleecing is at this point.

Hunchback Jack
07-11-2019, 09:43 AM
Wait, are there SIX variants of the endpapers???

Lurking inside the cover of the first UK hardback print run of The Institute you’ll find one of four beautiful illustrations inspired by scenes from the novel.

If you’re ordering online the one you receive will be random, or you can head to your local bookstore and seek out your favourite.

Anyone who pre-orders a copy will receive a special endpaper.

And that's not all. . .

The Waterstones Special Edition

This very special limited edition is exclusive to Waterstones. It has its own unique endpaper design as well as sprayed edges.

I wonder if all preorders get unique endpapers?

ETA: oh never mind. “Special endpapers” may refer to just one of the four pictorial endpapers described above. As opposed to the usual blank endpapers that later printings will presumably have.

Does anyone know which town in SC this is set in?

A very small, fictional town.

Do you by chance know what town he based it on?

It's barely a bump on the side of the road, a main street without much else going for it (except for a diner with a VERY cool name!). Could be anywhere.

I think part of the sleeping beauties tour was so that OWEN could experience a crazy, full blown book tour. Stated by Marcia on the KING website that he had no tour planned for THE INSTITUTE. :(

At King's age, you have to wonder how many books can be left. So appreciate every one. There is nothing like cracking open a new King novel. I've been reading him since I was a kid. It will be a sad day when he is gone or not able to write. I have my differences with his political opinions, but that doesn't diminish my enjoyment of his writing. My favorite moment is when, after waiting months or years for a new book, you finally get to open it up and start reading.

On the Blue edge version the endpapers are blue.

To add confusion. The Waterstones web site showed variant colours of Red, Orange, Yellow and Green. I just picked up copies that were PURPLE and green....

ALso ALL of the copies in WH Smith (purple cover) had YELLOW internal FEP's Can anyone in the UK confirm they have seen any other colour on a Purple WH Smith variant?

I always love the feeling of these types of dust jackets. Not sure what to call it. Also, Amazon now just throws the book into an oversized padded envelope that isn't even properly sealed. Gone are the good old days when they used actual boxes and the book was fixed to a piece of cardboard with plastic so it would arrive in pristine condition.

Ain't that the sad truth. I picked mine up at Barnes and Nobles, and I was kind of shocked how many were in poor condition. Messed up dust jackets, boards, etc. I had to legitimately take my time to find a pristine copy. Unless I'm mistaken, the release of The Outsider was pretty similar. I recall a lot of 1st editions in not the best shape

Ricky

Yeah, I had the same experience with The Outsider. I can't even remember how many copies I went through at how many stores to find a good copy. Hope it isn't that way again at my Barnes and Noble this time. (I had to do the same with End of Watch and a few other King titles when they were released. What happened to just going and picking one off the shelf knowing that it'd be in good condition? It's like no one cares about shipping quality any more.)

I bought a WH Smiths edition yesterday, and all the copies in my local branch had GREEN endpapers... so perhaps the WH Smiths edition has all four colours, like the standard edition. Also, my copy of the WH Smiths edition has purple-ish boards: are the standard copies like that, or is that an exclusive to the WH Smiths edition as well? My copy of the Smith's Outsider has black boards...

I got this from an independent Book store in one of the towns near to me. Never stepped foot in the store before today. I picked up the last Trade variant I needed (still hunting down all the WHSmith copies for members) and explained the variants to the proprietor (who was unaware). She handed me my receipt and said, "hang on, let me get something... then handed me all this with the comment "is this stuff of any interest?" (HELL YES!) I now have a new favourite bookstore :)

There is enough of the little postcards for everyone who ordered a book (or more) from me but I only have a couple of the prints (the poster stays with me!) I will put names in a hat and draw to see who gets a print. It will be a surprise so you wont know till you get the books :)

I would also like the answer to this question. I have a WH smith edition copy (green) bought from the store, but not a standard edition to compare it to. I would like to purchase the other WHS variants, but don’t want to pay for a switcheroo.

The whs edition boards have a slight purplish tinge to them.

I finally got to compare them side by side. The books under the dustjacket are different. The boards of the WH Smith edition are purple while the standard boards are blue, and the foil stamping on the spines are also different colors.

So if buying copies of the WH Smith edition on the secondary market, make sure to get pictures which include the boards and endpapers in the same shot. Otherwise, you may be taken in by a ruse.
