This copy is inscribed to Dave Dikty, Ms. May's son, to whom the book is dedicated.

After Ms. May's recent death, I tried to get in touch with Dave to gift this book back to him, if he wanted it. But unfortunately, Dave passed away in 2005. I don't remember exactly when I purchased this copy, but it could have been around that time, which would explain why the book was on the market.

In any case, I will hold onto it, and treasure it.

Cool, I'll watch this thread keenly...

Same here! I'm loving these new collection threads and watching them closely.

Also, HBJ, what a treasure you have! Perhaps the most personal copy of any book I have seen.

Sorry I've been a bit slow getting more pictures up. I'm trying to figure out how to take photos that will do the books justice. They still won't look much good, but I want to at least try.

Speaks the Nightbird is exactly the same as the regular limited River City edition, but is marked with a letter instead of a number - BB, in this case. The provenance of these lettered River City volumes is a little uncertain, however.

The Providence Rider is letter B; the rest are letter U.

If anyone has a lead of a lettered Mister Slaughter for sale, please PM me. I can offer a finders fee if a you connect me to a seller and a deal is made.

Thanks, Yegor. Your photos of your collection are just brilliant works of presentation. I'm struggling just to find large enough clean flat surfaces to arrange them on, and to get my books lit adequately. You both inspire me, and put me to shame. ;)

Yeah the lettered Mister Slaughter is a tough nut to crack. A PC copy sold on eBay a few months before I had acquired these copies, and I haven't seen one since. It's the first-in-a-series SubPress syndrome.

If I come across a Providence Rider lettered I'll PM you. I haven't seen any since I found this one, I'm afraid.

I'd love to find other lettered owners to try to find matches.

Nice looking books, Peter!

Thanks, Brian. There are actually a few different editions of McCammon's books out there, but I'm focusing on the SubPress editions for now. I'd really love them to do a Speaks the Nightbird.

McCammon seems to be publishing with Cemetery Dance now, though, which makes me wonder if future Corbett volumes will be from them. It would be a shame if the series didn't match.

Great display. I've never read McCammon, but I know he's popular.

Thanks! I had not read him until I picked up Speaks the Nightbird a few years ago, and was totally hooked. I've been gradually reading his older works, and collecting his work when I can.

Thanks! Yes I have a soft spot for the series, which I read during my formative years. It still holds up reasonably well, I think.

I consider Intervention and Jack the Bodiless to be her best work, though. Using the framing device of Rogatien Remillard's memoir to tell the story of the Metapsychic Rebellion was genius, and Rogi is a wonderful character. That series fizzled out a bit, though, sadly.

Yeah, certainly I don't have anything else like this. I am thrilled to have it - but it's also a little unsettling, I must admit.

This is what I've been collecting recently. I read a bunch of Greg Bear back in the day, and really enjoyed the stories and the U.K. Cover art. So recently I've been collecting British 1st/1st editions of the books I particularly liked. Only The Venging and Heads are signed.

They aren't particularly rare, and weren't particularly expensive. Bear has fallen off the SF radar, I think. But I was very happy to find them.

ETA: sorry about the bright reflections. I'm still trying to find a good place to photograph books for this thread. As you can see, it's a work in progress.

I like the Greg Bear books:) I have a UK Blood Music and UK Blood Music proof that I wanted to get signed, and it turned out to be pretty easy to have done. I contacted Greg Bear through the discussion board on his website. Basically I posted that I loved Blood Music and asked if there was any way to get some books signed, and he e-mailed me with his address and told me to mail him the books with a return shipping label included. He did it pretty quick too. If you posted something on that site, he would probably sign some of your books and all it would cost would be the shipping:)

Don’t know how I missed your lettered McCammons. Those are amazing man. I just started collecting his works but there are no letters on my shelves. Of all the McCammon S/Ls, which is your favorite in terms of appearance?

Hunchback Jack
05-26-2018, 01:32 PM
Adam, the Matthew Corbett S/Ls, hands down. The foil embossed slipcases are really nicely done - photos don't do them justice - and the books themselves have additional content not in the trade edition. And the stories themselves are fantastic.

The other volumes are also very nice - the oversized Sean Song and Boys World are top notch - but for me, the Corbetts are something special.

I saw your FB post about the recent McCammons you bought from Siep. Congratulations, man. You're off to a great start!

A mish-mash of Clive Barker signed limited editions. I don't really collect Barker with the same focus as other authors, but I've (somehow) managed to acquire a few editions of his books I particularly like:

The limited reissue edition of David Wingrove's Chung Kuo series:
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9565.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9566.JPG

This series has an unusual publication history. It was originally published in the 90s, and while Wingrove had conceived of it as a 9 book series, the publisher forced him to condense the last two volumes into one. The last volume is not that great, as a result.

Fast-forward 20 years, and a small U.K. Publishing house approached Wingrove to reissue the series, revising the entire story from beginning to end, expanding the final volume into its original intended length, splitting each original volume into two, and writing a new two-volume prelude story. The result was a 20 volume epic, to be published over 4-5 years - including a signed limited edition of each volume.

Sadly, the ambitious project failed after 8 volumes. This set is as complete as it will ever be.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9568.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9569.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9570.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9571.JPG

The earlier limited volumes had a publication run of 250; the later volumes, just 50. The endpapers display the dust jacket illustrations of the trade editions, and contain two-color printing throughout. They are nice volumes.

As an investment, though, they were not a success. Just recently, a set sold on eBay for one third of what I paid for these. And what I paid was a pretty good price at the time. I'm still glad to have them, though.

Agreed, Yegor. Quality and beauty in every respect.

ETA: and I must say that Victor Chong's illustrations capture the mood of the series exactly - especially his cover art. If CD are publishing the remainder of the series, it would be a real shame - to say the least - if they approached a different artist for the remaining volumes.

What a beautiful looking set! I love when a publisher can take a theme and stretch it out over a number of books without the aesthetic getting boring (the RA Lafferty series from Centipede Press is another good example of this). It's a real shame it won't be a 20 book set - that would be a very pretty shelf. As is, they are still a nice looking set of books, though!

Thanks! I have to agree - the consistency of design elements was one of the main reasons I acquired this set, even though the series had already been cancelled. There a lots of little details to appreciate: for example, the printing on the covers and slipcase, and the bookmark ribbon colour, match the endpaper colour scheme for each volume.

Unfortunately, this is not *quite* a matching set. All volumes are #20 - *except* volume 3, which is #21. This was a publisher error - they sent the original owner the wrong number, and he didn't bother to correct it. Needless to say, I've very interested in finding #20 of volume 3!

Beautiful stuff, Peter!

Thanks, Brian! It's a great feeling to post these pics to a forum where people appreciate them!

My lettered collection is still very modest - I'm focusing almost exclusively on McCammon and Simmons SubPress editions, and I'm far from complete, as you can see. Some uncommon or signed Stephen Donaldson books:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9731.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9732.JPG

These are U.K. Trade hardcover editions of the First and Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. I'm not sure of the publishing history of them; i don't know which, if any, were published before the paperbacks, and which are hardcover reprints. I think the non-Collins editions might all be first editions, and quite hard to find.

I love the color illustrations on the First Chronicles books. They were done by an artist named Peter Goodfellow, and I'd love to get prints of them.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9734.JPG

US and U.K. Hardcovers of the Last Chronicles. The US editions are all signed; volume 1 is inscribed to me. The U.K. Edition of The Last Dark is not a book club edition, despite its smaller size.

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9737.JPG

Gollancz signed limited editions of Runes of the Earth (shrinkwrapped) and Seventh Decimate. The former is not as rare - 1000 copies were published - while the latter was limited to 100 copies. No extras other than the signature and slipcase.

Nice collection there, Peter!

Thanks, Brian. I actually have quite a few more 1/1 UK trade hardcovers of his other series, but they are very common. He's very popular in the U.K. These are the more uncommon editions.

The books look great. Another author I have yet to read.

Donaldson tends to polarize people. He often has characters do unspeakable things and then tries to redeem them. He also has complex ideas about the nature of power and heroism which avoid the usual tropes, and require investment to understand. So a lot of people don't enjoy his work. I like it a lot - his writing style appeals to me, and he's a wonderful storyteller.

VERY NICE Donaldson collection !!!

Thanks, Frank. I know these volumes don't look like much, but some of them are actually quite hard to find in good condition. A lot of people don't realize that U.K. Hardcover editions of the First Chronicles even exist, because the Fontana paperbacks are so ubiquitous.

Wow. Man oh man that is one bad ass collection. Unfortunately I am unfamiliar with most of these authors and while I like Hell Raiser 1 and 2, I have only read Weaveworld, which I did like a lot. I have Imajica but just never read it.
This is one serious collection Peter.

I haven’t read anything by this author but the titles demand interest. Curious to give him a try. The books are clean and classy looking, too.

Thanks, Adam. As I said above, he can be a bit polarizing. If you get halfway through the first in the series - Lord Foul's Bane - and are still willing to give the protagonist a chance, then you will probably like the whole series. But there's one scene in particular that makes that character - and Donaldson - irredeemable in many readers' eyes.

Thanks, Mike. In my formative years I read SF and epic fantasy, mostly, so much of my non-King collection is in those genres. My foray into S/Ls and Lettered editions is relatively recent, so the stuff I have from before then is more focused on unusual or rare trade editions of the authors I like. Also, mostly UK editions, as I grew up in Australia.

More to come soon. I have some acquisitions arriving soon, and some more stuff in the bookcase to share.

This is a PC copy of the SubPress lettered edition. The three volumes are housed in a single traycase, and each one is bound in leather with foil stamping. The endpapers are this beautifully textured and richly colored thick paper. A nice set.

This was another lucky pickup from the SubPress PC sale earlier this year.

This trilogy is the only thing I've read by him, and it isnt bad at all. Solid post apocalyptic fiction, tending towards YA.

Yeah, SubPress do some pretty innovative stuff. The multi-volume slipcase they've designed for the Silo books is pretty neat. It's also gorgeous - the leather is silky smooth. Really pleased to have it.

These were published a few years apart by SubPress, so the traycases look quite different. The first volume is more of a stitched leather wallet style, while the second is the more common clamshell design. The books are bound in leather.

Sadly, SubPress didn't publish the third volume in the series.

Warping may be one reason they changed the design. This copy looks okay so far.

Thanks, Yegor! The first volume's lettered edition was only a 15 copy run, so I'm pretty thrilled to have one of the only 15 possible matching sets. The do come up on the secondary market now and then at very reasonable prices, though.

I'm also pleased about SubPress picking up previously-abandoned series. Now that they are completing Richard K. Morgan's Kovacs series, I hope they publish Morgan's "The Dark Defiles", at last.

Numbered: Between $300 and $400 roughly (One's been sitting at $450 for awhile, one sold for a little less I believe)

Lettered: Who knows, maybe Hunchback Jack may be willing to disclose what he found letter "I" for. I'd pay up to $2,000, and am thinking about trading my Misery S/L and requesting cash at this point.

I certainly use those sites, and have found some rarities on ABE (although prices are usually on the high side). But a key to success in finding these books is to do what you're doing here - join online communities, let people know what you're looking for, and help out others to find their wants as well.

(Incidentally, if you had either a Drood Lettered or a Mister Slaughter Lettered, even PC, I'd throw all sort of money at you) :)

The traycase is bound in Japanese silk, embossed with the death's-head hawkmoth emblem. The book itself is bound in red leather and black cloth, with the same death's-head hawkmoth emblem embossed in gold foil. Gorgeous endpapers, and two-color printing throughout.

Photos do not do this book justice. I was awe-struck just taking it down from the shelf to photograph it again.

I think you're right to focus, though.

There are a lot of "pretty books" out there, and I've learned the hard way that if you chase after everything that looks cool, you end up with a lot of titles on your shelf that you really just don't care about. My collection has definitely benefitted recently from me making conscious decisions about what *not* to collect - regardless of how gorgeous the volumes are or how good an investment it might be. Read my sig, in other words. :)

So if King is your thing, there's nothing wrong with that. You want things on your shelf that have significance to you.

I hadn't seen pictures of Black Hills before I bought it, so I was speechless when I first held it in my hands. The texture of the slipcase and book, the "burnt wood" look of the stamping on case and book, and the matching endpapers and case lining are perfectly designed. The book is set in the Old West, and this volume captures that feel perfectly. Just an incredible volume.

Man you have a killer S&P collection Peter. Very envious of that. As I said, I have been pigeon holed (my own doing) into King. I am sure there are tons of other stuff
that I would have found interesting if I knew about it. Keep on going.

Thanks, Mike.

Yes, I really like SubPress's work, although I've only been collecting them seriously for the last 5 years or so. A lot of these volumes are from the secondary market, and so these numbered sets are unmatched.

My buying habits have shifted in the last year, though. I'm now starting to focus on specific authors, and trying to afford Lettered editions instead of the numbered for authors I really like. I'm buying fewer books as a result, but my collection has benefitted from that focus. SubPress is probably better off, too. :)

I also need to get better at putting on mylar book covers, so I can get these babies out of those plastic bags. :(

I don't think I could ever afford lettered books. So I am going to probably have to stick with numbers. I mean, the lettered Hill House would have been awesome but still too much for me. And I think they sold out pre-public sale anyway so it doesn't matter. I will probably just stick with Suntup books for a while. I know Paul said he has a few ideas so hopefully I can get a nice collection going. And TBH, to my detriment, I never really tried other authors :frown: so I don't know who else I might like.

Hunchback Jack
08-13-2018, 12:07 PM
Mike, when I say "Lettered", I don't mean King. That's out of my price range. But other authors are more affordable if you buy from the publisher or be patient on the secondary market. Even so, I'm now passing up a lot of other authors and books just to afford the Lettereds on my want list.

But you do you; buy what you can afford of the authors you really like. Focus is far more important than having a bunch of nice books.

Suntup seem like a winner to me, too. Even setting aside the appreciation we're seeing on the secondary market, they are very very nice editions for the price. I'm a customer of their's for life, I think. I was lucky to get the Misery S/L, and expect to add every S/L Paul publishes under that name. I don't expect to ever get onto the lettered Suntup train, but I'm very happy nonetheless.

:D I know what you mean. It was seeing others' Lettered editions that got me started.

But my Lettered collection is *very* modest compared to Yegor and other collectors out there. They have some truly inspirational collections - matching Lettered sets, and whatnot. Mine are mostly mismatched letters or PC copies.

I really like Willis's work - it's smart and fun - and I picked this copy up on the secondary market for under list price. If I get the chance, I hope to pick up lettered editions of her Blackout/All Clear series, also from SubPress.

HBJ
I was able to find the set from a retiring collector, otherwise I never seen any for sale together.

No, me either. My statement was more an idle hope than, say, a goal for 2018. :)

(Although I may have a lead on a PC Lettered of All Clear, which would be cool)

Well, that lead turned out to be good.

This is a PC copy of the Lettered edition of All Clear, by Connie Willis, from SubPress:

Thanks, Mike.

There's a PC set of Blackout/All Clear up at Camelot for $2000, but that's too high, in my opinion. I paid about $250 for this copy of All Clear. So I'll have to keep looking for Blackout.

Meanwhile, I've been repairing my glass door bookcases - the cheapo plywood backs had come off - cleaning them top to bottom, and have been getting my S/Ls out of the plastic bags and into brodart covers. I plan to take some new shelfies and put them up in my gallery.

I also have a couple of new purchases I'll add here when they come in. Stay tuned.

A PC copy of the SubPress Lettered edition of The Skylark by Peter Straub:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_03092.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_03101.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_03111.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_03121.JPG

The numbered S/L edition of The Skylark was the first book I ever ordered directly from SubPress, back in 2010. It's a "first draft" version of Straub's novel, A Dark Matter, and was published exclusively by SubPress ahead of the "official" version. I love that sort of thing, and given it was also signed, I couldn't resist picking it up. Well worth reading alongside the more widely-published novel.

So when a PC copy of the Lettered edition showed up recently, I also couldn't resist picking it up.

Strangely, the signature sheet in this copy mentions the 500 copies of the numbered edition, but not the 26 copies of the Lettered edition. But this is definitely a PC copy of the lettered edition - the cover and binding is superior to the numbered edition. So I can only assume that all the lettered copies are like this, or the binder goofed (which is why this is a PC copy).

And of course much love for Peter Straub :)

I haven't read The Skylark/A Dark Matter, though, I'll admit. There are a few Straub books I have yet to pick up, but, like King (though to a smaller degree), he has a number of books that are SO GOOD that I always hesitate to read a new book instead of rereading one of the classics.

Thanks, BM! You know, I remember being fascinated by the differences - the Skylark is considerably longer, and has a many scenes cut from the final novel - but overall I recall them being very much the same novel. But I can't remember specifics; it was years ago that I read them, and I'm an old man.

Yes, I love me some Straub. The Tim Underhill novels (Koko, Mystery, The Throat, lost boy lost girl, and In the Night Room) are all fantastic. I also like his shorter work, although it can be a little uneven. I particularly like the shorter works associated with the Blue Rose novels. His prose is somehow intriguingly unusual, yet very clear and readable.

I have yet to go back and read some of his very early novels, and there are a couple of novels after The Throat that I need to get to.

I've been collecting signed UK trade editions lately, and I thought I'd post some pics of them here.

I read that Zafon series 2 years back - there were peaks and troughs but overall, I enjoyed them very much. I’d be interested to see what the latest book is like. They’re beautiful looking editions - nice!

Antoni, I enjoyed the series immensely. The second, particularly, I thought was fantastic for reasons I won't spoil. I think a lot of the appeal for me is the prose itself; the plot is a little meandering at times, but I like that sort of thing. I also listened to audiobooks for the series, which benefit from excellent narrators.

And your copy has TWO letters! Wow!

:D That's not how that works.

I won this ARC during the live FB stream that Paul did late last year. I couldn't be more thrilled.

Two signed UK editions of The Angel's Game, by Carlos Ruiz Zafón:

Mystery is the second of a trilogy (with Koko preceding it, and The Throat following it), but they are pretty loosely connected, and work as standalone novels. In fact, the S/Ls of Koko and The Throat already come from different publishers (CP and Borderlands, respectively), so I don't think having a Suntup edition of just Mystery would be unattractive to collectors.

Of course, if Paul wanted to release the whole trilogy, I'd be the last person on Earth to object.

ETA: I should add that the three "Blue Rose" novels mentioned above are not a trilogy in any conventional narrative sense. They share characters of the same name, but on different narrative planes of existence. The three novels form part of a larger metafictional framework (which includes some related short stories and novellas) in which Straub envisions specific parts of his work to be fiction written by one of his characters.

This might sound trite or pretentious, but it's far from it. Reading later novels is like looking at the earlier ones reflected in a broken mirror, where characters, plot points and themes are revisited in distorted or transformed ways.

Kind of, but not really. The different levels of his metafiction don't interact; there is no metaverse with different levels of existence. It's more like he is revisiting ideas and themes using different versions of the same characters. Each book stands alone, but reading all three in order is very intriguing.

This sounds like it begs for a trilogy with art (cover, slipcase, illustrations) following the same pattern of repeated but varied themes. In the right hands, that could be a remarkable set (now I just have to go read the books).

This edition is not particularly rare, with a publication run of 1000. But I believe it's the only UK S/L edition of this book, and I was looking for one to "complete" my Zafon set.

I took a chance on a somewhat vague listing and got it for an absolute steal. It's not in perfect shape - the book has one small ding to a corner, and the slipcase has some minor wear on the corners - but it'll do very nicely

I now have U.K. S/Ls of all four volumes of Zafon's Cemetery of Forgotten Books. However, I'm not sure whether I have all the U.K. S/L editions that exist for these books. Some were published by arrangement with multiple booksellers - Goldsboro and Waterstones, at least - each with its own stated limitation. I don't think any bookseller published all four in a limited edition, and the publisher themselves did not either.

So it's a bit hard to know what a "complete set" really means. But I think I'm done.

I've been collecting these for a while, and just completed the set. These are Deluxe Trade hardcover editions of Tolkien's works, published by HarperCollins in the U.K. :

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_3506.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_3507.JPG

These editions aren't signed or numbered, and are relatively modestly priced - particularly the later printings, which most of these copies are. But they have some nice design details on slipcase and boards, are printed on heavier paper stock, and have a higher quality binding and ribbon bookmark. Very nice editions.

HarperCollins have a few different slipcased editions of Tolkien's works, and so I'm not entirely sure if there are others in this particular set. There is a deluxe version of the three-volume History of Middle Earth, published in 2017, which may be part of this set, but it's almost identical to the standard three-volume set published in 2005, so I'm not sure it's really considered "deluxe". Or, at least, deluxe enough for me to buy, given that I have the 2005 set (and a few others besides).

Other editions of these books tend to be fancier, having leather spines, gilt pages or artist signatures. This set contains volumes that are simple enough to be enjoyed as reading copies.

Thank you! Most were not that hard to find - later printings are still available new - but some look a bit of hunting.

Very nice, Peter!

Thank you, Brian.

I think they look great. Tolkien wrote more than I thought.

He wrote a lot more than was published in his lifetime. He spent literally decades working on the "Elder Tales" of Middle Earth - set in the "First Age" of its history - and trying to make those tales consistent with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (set in the Third Age). The Silmarillion contains short forms of those tales, and many of the other books contain longer versions of them - in multiple, unfinished versions.

The posthumous volumes were edited by his son, Christopher Tolkien, who also provided extensive commentary and analysis of the texts. He is the literary executor of the Tolkien estate and, in that role, is responsible for organizing and publishing his father's works as he sees fit.

Yes, but do you really think it is ever complete (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Letters-Father-Christmas-J-Tolkien/dp/0008327726/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=B9E8965PJVQDXMKSGJ2J)? HA!

:D Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't heard about this volume, and will certainly get it once published, if it is in this set.

Nice Tolkien. Maybe one day I will try to get a complete set. I would love to read his stuff.

If you are more interested in the stories themselves, and less interested in the literary analysis of how his work evolved over time, I would recommend:
- The Hobbit (a children's book, so keep that in mind)
- The Lord of the Rings (famous, wonderful, but challenging)
- The Silmarillion (tales from Middle-Earth's history long before the events of Lord of the Rings; even more challenging)
- Tales from the Perilous Realm (short stories, some from Middle-Earth, some not)
- The Children of Hurin, Beren and Luthien, The Fall of Gondolin (expanded versions of three key tales from The Silmarillion, with some commentary)

It looks very nice, Peter!

Thanks! The set looks great on the shelf, and the books are quite a bit nicer than standard trade editions - but not so nice that you feel reluctant to actually read them.

Incidentally, the printings I have of this series are:

The Hobbit: unspecified
Lord of the Rings: 11th
The Silmarillion: 6th
Unfinished Tales: 5th
The Children of Húrin: 6th
Tales from the Perilous Realm: 3rd
Sigurd and Gudrún: 3rd
The Fall of Arthur: 2nd
Beowulf: 1st
The Story of Kullervo: 1st
Beren and Lúthien: 3rd
The Fall of Gondolin: 1st

First printings - particularly of the earlier volumes in the series - are collectible and usually sell for a premium. They tend to be a bit nicer too - later printings are done by a cheaper manufacturer, and lack attention to detail.

For example, you'll notice that the spine text on The Fall of Arthur is set higher on the spine than the titles on the other volumes. Apparently that is because it's a second printing - first printings do line up. Beren and Luthien, a third printing, has a similar problem.

What kind of BS is that? How is that acceptable?

Because HC is a generic publisher, not a small/specialty one; because it isn't an official "series" in the sense we understand it, where each book in a series owes something to the books before it, design-wise; and because these are basically just nicer versions of pretty ordinary books.

Don't get me wrong - I've been lusting after these books from afar and hope to one day buy some - but you need to know what they are and aren't before going in.

Pretty much exactly this.

However, I do think that HarperCollins *intends* these books to be a proper series, and they do carry design elements across all the volumes. But that doesn't always translate when they outsource production to different printers and binders, and (unlike a small press) they don't care enough to fix it when variations happen. Having said that, the third printing of The Fall of Arthur will supposedly fix the spine text misalignment.

(I should stress that I care about the later-printing mistakes not at all, and feel no need to replace the printings I have with first printings. Some collectors do, and that's cool, but I'm totally happy will getting later printings at lower prices.)

Don't get me wrong - I've been lusting after these books from afar and hope to one day buy some - but you need to know what they are and aren't before going in.

Exactly. And I've tried to be clear about what they are - fancy trade editions that are affordable enough to be enjoyed as reading copies. And they are "deluxe" enough to scratch my book lover's itch.

I had to go look at my handful after the title matching being mentioned. My Children of Hurin goes down the spine, guess I got an American print in there. Don't know how many American ones came out. Also looked up Christopher Tolkien and did not realize he is 94. Who will carry on?!

That does sound different from the editions I have. Maybe Houghton-Mifflin? And yes, Christopher Tolkien has hung up his cap as literary executor (as of The Fall of Gondolin), it's hard to say who will take up the mantle. It may be a committee of various grandchildren.

I have been holding back on collecting this year, partly to recover from over-purchasing over the holidays, and partly to save up so that I could buy a Grail item if one came along.

Well, it paid off. In the past week or so, THREE much-wanted items - one a Grail item - appeared on the market, and after a bit of bargaining with the sellers, I was able to purchase them. One I already have; two are still on the way. I'll post pics when they all arrive.

Lost boy lost girl and In the Night Room are companion volumes in a sense, and Borderlands gave them a similar look. You can find matching pairs of the numbered edition for sale for quite reasonable prices, but the lettered editions appear almost never. I've had Night Room on my shelves for a while, waiting for its mate. Now they are united.

The 5 Stories lettered edition is a gorgeous volume that I've never seen before. The marbled cloth and leather bound covers are amazing.

Yes, I agree. The lost boy lost girl and Night Room volumes have nice covers and endpapers, but are a bit on the plain side. 5 Stories is another matter - the covers and binding are beautiful.

(I should say that I really liked the lblg and ItNR novels - very interesting and intertwining narratives. Really thrilled to have the lattered editions of both)

So do I, Brian. The photos don't do it justice - the endpapers and 5 Stories covers are just fantastic.

The Gauntlet Press one is quite nice, but I agree - I'd like to see a fancier edition. Mystery has not had any S/L treatment, either.

Thanks, Mike, I appreciate it.

A gorgeous edition; CD did a great job on this title. Slipcase materials and quality are beautiful, and the matching boards of the book itself are a beautiful touch. (And they do match; they look different in the photos because they are catching the light at different angles).

I can't wait to see the Lettered edition.
