Very nice indeed, Peter. Congratulations!

Thanks, Alan.

SubPress did the first six volumes of this series, and this is the first volume that CD have done since McCammon moved over to them as his publisher. They have tried to maintain a consistency of style with the previous volumes, while still distinguishing Cardinal Black from them. I think they've done a great job.

I assume the Cardinal is not a nice guy?

Indeed, he is not, Steve, although he may not be the worst villain of the series the we encounter before we are done.

Nice add, Peter!

Thanks, Brian.

This is the second of three long-sought-after purchases I made recently (the first being Straub's lost boy lost girl).

These two Hugo-winning novels form a single time-travel story of life in London during the Battle of Britain. Connie Willis spent the better part of a decade writing it, and the Blitz has been an intense interest of hers, so the result is pretty remarkable.

I had a PC lettered copy of All Clear, and had long been looking for any copy of Blackout, when this matching pair appeared for sale online. I wasn't really looking for a matching pair, but the seller and I came to an acceptable price, and I'm very pleased indeed to have them. As it turns out, to my great surprise, I was able to find another lettered copy of Blackout shortly thereafter, and so I'll be selling the unmatched lettered pair soon.

Congrats Peter!
I actually loved the design of both books - don't know if variation was part of the plan or not. Curved spine is one of my favorites for thicker books when displayed but I dont like to photograph it, lol as it never lays flat.
Nice additions as I know you are a fan of Willis!

Thanks very much, Yegor! It's good to see you here. Yes, I agree about the curved spine and the difficulty in "posing" it for pictures. :) And you are right that I am a fan of Willis' work - although I can see why she's not for everyone. Very pleased to find and buy this matching set.

Never read him, but it looks fantastic.

I would recommend the series. Not in the horror genre, more in the historical drama realm. But it's a great read.

Congrats, Peter! A gorgeous production.

One of SubPress's best, in my opinion. (I know I say that a lot, but they do a lot of very nice editions!)

Lots of beautiful little details in this edition, from the covers to the binding to the printing to the silver page edging. A lovely, elegant presentation of an iconic novel.

This is an absolutely stupendous acquisition and I'm very jealous! This has been on my grail list as well for some time and I've never seen one available. What a masterpiece this is!

I can't decide if it's a good thing or not that Sub Press dropped the production values on this series considerably after this book. On one hand it means that I have one Zafon grail instead of many, but on the other hand it seems like kind of a shame that the rest of the series pales in comparison to this amazing volume

I must admit when I saw pictures of this edition, I wasn't sure about it. It looks better in person, and even then, it's grown on me since I received it.

I would recommend the series. It's not perfect - I think the third volume is a little overcrowded with ideas and concepts - but it's a solid, no-nonsense story with an old-school SF flavour. Cixin Liu is the real deal.

Another beautiful add, Peter! Congrats!

Thanks, Brian. This edition will go down as one of SubPress's best (and most sought after), I think.

The Numbered edition of The Road by Cormac McCarthy, from Suntup Editions.

It’s well worth picking this book up with your (clean and dry) bare hands. Lovely textures in this design, and the rough cloth and heavy flax paper fit the novel’s subject and mood perfectly. Fins craftsmanship, too; the book fits the slipcase like a glove.

I enjoy Card’s SF and Fantasy work, but this book is a little different - a fictional recounting of early Mormon church history. I haven’t read it yet, to be honest, but I've heard good things. I saw it online for a reasonable price, so picked it up. I'd never seen a copy before - only 15 copies were published. I love the common design elements across traycase, dustjacket and book covers.

An elegant edition from SubPress’s history.

Wonderful addition! But why is the SubPress logo gone and what is the HR?

Not sure, but I think this book might have been co-published with Hatrack River Publishers, Orson Scott Card's own publishing house. SubPress's listing doesn't say anything about it, but does mention that copies were also available for sale on OSC's website.

The SubPress logo sometimes takes a vacation. It's not on the lettered edition of The Three Body Problem, either - just a simple 'Subterranean Press", as here. And the Expanse series numbered editions don't have any text at all on the dustjackets.

Wow. Again, your non-King collection is something to behold just on it's own. That's a great thing to have Peter.

I don't know how I missed this when you posted it, but BIG CONGRATS on this one! Some of the resale prices on this are nuts, so I hope you got a fair deal. And I do believe that a "fair deal" is still a pretty hefty price, as this is one of Sub Press's all time greatest books, for sure! Right up there with, or even above, the lettered Shadow of the Wind. Silence of the Lambs, and Snowcrash. I love the spine design and the traycase design, I think the art deco nod is really cool and what elevates it above some of the others. I believe that this type of marbling is "Italian" and it's one of my favorite types of marbling patterns - the colors here are just beautiful.

Great acquisition!

You said you do your best. I just looked at what the three body problem lettered is going for now. WOW. First, it is a fantastic looking book but I have to say the price I saw almost made my glasses fly off my head.

Thanks, guys! I was fortunate enough to preorder this edition directly from SubPress, so I paid list price.

But if you're looking at the $8K BIN copy on ebay, that's for the whole trilogy, not just the first volume. I'd expect just this book (now that it no longer holds rights to the following volumes) to be on the order of $1500, tops.

(My copy is not for sale, I should add).

The leather of the boards and traycase is just amazing to touch, and the whole production is perfect. Heavy paper stock, two-color printing throughout, illustrated section headings, and many tipped-in color illustrations. Many of these features are also in the numbered edition, making it one of SubPress's best editions all around. The whole series is like that, in fact.

SubPress were nice enough to send me the same letter as my (secondary market) lettered Shadow of the Wind, as no one else had claimed it. So I'm half way toward a matched set (if I can find letter F of volumes 2 and 3. Hey, I can dream, can't i?)

Thanks, Mike. Your King collection is really great - you’ve been getting some impressive books lately, and I can see you are focusing on the specific editions you want. It’s great to see.

Thanks for the nice comments about my pictures. As I say, I’m trying new things, and trying to show the books at their best while being limited by my lack of skills, equipment, and environment. I never achieve the pictures I see in my head, but I hope that people can see what I was going for - and the books are usually stunning enough that they still look great, at least. :)

Thank you, Frank. This series is one of my favorite of recent years, and the SubPress editions of them are stunning - even for SubPress. They really went above and beyond on this series.

It’s worth mentioning that while the leather covering the traycase and boards looks like it is glossy and smooth, it actually feels silky, almost like a very subtle suede, and has a beautiful texture to it. You can just see it in some of my photos when you look closely.

So sorry to hear about your house! I hope it’s all repaired now and you are back to a more regular life.

I don’t read fantasy much anymore, but I did back in the 80s and 90s. This was one of the first series I read after Lord of the Rings, and was captivated. But, be warned, Donaldson is very divisive. He has a very unique writing style that some people don’t like, and in this series particularly, the protagonist does something early on that many readers consider unforgivable. But I find his books compelling.

There are still copies of this edition available, by the way, although the slipcases are sold out.

Thanks, Brian. I'm trying a few new things, photography-wise - more interesting backgrounds, darker environments with slightly warmer light sources, and the digital "depth of field" fakery of my phone. I'm still not entirely happy with the results, but I'm getting there.

It helps that with a book this nice, it's hard to make it look bad :) .

I've heard of that book, it looks like a very classy edition.

It was a big deal back in '77 when it was published (with its two sequels), and it catapulted Donaldson into the Fantasy limelight. His later series continued to do well, although his most recent work is struggling to find an audience. He tends to have 3-4 year gaps between series - and sometimes between novels - so I think it's hard for him to retain readers.

Looks very well done. Congrats!

Thanks very much!

Oh yes, the drama is mostly behind us and our home is restored to the usual clutter.

I looked into the plot of this book based on your point above related to the unforgivable thing the character does and found a lot of negativity around that and other elements of the book. Though I take the input of the people I trust and respect over that of random online chatter (wait . . . am I contributing to random online chatter?!).

The numbered is a very nice book - and Grim Oak will be getting more slipcases, if you want one (you will need to order it separately). I love how the book looks without the dustjacket.

Buying Lord Foul's Bane will also give you first refusal of the matching number S/L of The Illearth War and The Power That Preserves, also being done by Grim Oak.

Yeah, I would find it hard to recommend buying a $100 book - as nice as it is - if you didn't know anything about the author or hadn't read it. It was an instant "take my money goddammit!" purchase for me, because it was a genre-defining book for me. But that feeling is far from universal.

I think it looks better than the picture on the store page shows, honestly. The logo is printed on both "sides" of the mug, rather than on the end.

That's a nice print. I'll probably get one once Corona is under check.

Thanks, WDIL.

I'll have to remember to pick one up when the next book is announced.
