This is not new, I just realized I never posted these here before - one of the craziest rollercoaster deals I made off eBay. Story for some other time with good bourbon perhaps.

What an absolutely magnificent visual feast! A total treat that I very much enjoyed today :)

I love the "A" subcollection. I'd bet it's a hard one though! I have my preference of letters that I will always request when I'm able to buy a book new, but I'd bet that "A" is spoken for a lot. A nice array of colors even in just that one letter, though! Wow!

Letter A is when collecting is transformed into new level of sickness. HAHAHA.
It is usually assigned at random at Subterranean Press. Im not sure how the other publishers are doing it but its definitely the rarest letter in my years of search!

I love the rounded spine on the Dangerous Ways traycase! Why oh why didn't they do the same thing for Desperate Days?!

That said, doing interesting stuff with the spine of a traycase - rounding, hubbing, tooling, etc. - is an overlooked feature in a lot of small press offerings, which makes that Dangerous Ways an especially pretty book! That, and the material looks really neat. Nice grab, that pair :)

I'll be interested to keep up with your Vance acquisitions; a good sized output among a number of small presses. I don't collect him (yet, perhaps) but have been eyeing his stuff in Steve's collection thread, who first introduced me to the lettered Dangerous Ways when he commented that the Sub Press lettered edition was one of his most favorite books (or something similar) and posted a pic when I asked about it.

It's the one thing about SubPress that dismays me - they sometimes change a traycase or book design halfway through a series. I like that they switch it up sometimes, and experiment with new approaches, but I wish they would keep a series looking uniform.

(They usually do, I should stress, but at least a couple of times they haven't).

Hell yes, congratulations!! This is a fantastic way to start. And I'm happy we're going to get top notch pictures of the Vance lettereds!

Speaking about SP traycases, I'm not a fan of the rounded spine when it's the odd man out (like the lettered of The Neutronium Alchemist), but I really like the Dangerous Ways traycase. It looks good.

I spent some time researching as to why it is.
Most of the answers did not lead to experimentation but rather something else. For example - really old school cases with a flap ( Fevre Dream, Old Man's War) - they were discontinued due to constant quality issues and the binder who made them. The new binder after that ( happened to many presses at some point) did not make in business very long and there was another switch. And the last reason is the gap between the books themselves - the years between editions in the series. Longer time - more chances it will not match. You would be surprised but many publishers do not keep a "design book" of all their productions so for the most part they have to do a research as to what the heck did they produce this book in. Publishers even reached out to me for photos of their own book in order to show the design to binder. Now say if that work is not done, then you get completely different tray case and you and I will be sitting scratching our heads and freaking out because cases dont match, lol
This last one is a tough one for all OCD people. Hopefully with a help of online photography "database" and better cataloging software inconsistencies will be rare. I pray they will be.

This has been on my "to get list" for a few years. As an avid science fiction fan - I just "had to" find one of the best space operas published by Subterranean Press.
I was presented with an opportunity to buy this set a year or so ago but I was in a bit of a funk and decided to pass. Regretted it later. Due to some lucky circumstances last month I was offered to purchase it again and could not pass up.
This collection is one of only 15 available and considering how many stand alone editions I have seen for sale over the years, I would say its one of 15 or less. Way less. :)

First is Asimov's Foundation Trilogy by Easton Press, which I have no idea why I need to get into EP collecting again, but I wanted this book real bad apparently. It has a signature of Michael Whelan and James Gunn as well as Asimov. Which is cool.

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson.
Suntup Editions, 2020
I love photographing unique books as they present a really fun way to experiment and challenge me creatively at the same time.
There are many examples of these types of books in the past as recent as Limited edition of Let The Right One In - the boards had almost jewel like texture that has a beautiful sparkle depending on the angle.
When I've read Becca describing The Lottery boards as Caviar I was immediately intrigued - I am Russian after all, lol (And depending on the depth of field, it does look a lot like belugas opalescent and luminous eggs)
Obsidian color shagreen stingray is truly gorgeous in any light - with texture resembling diamonds and pearls with a stunning crown in the middle.

Thank you!
My wife spent a lot of time swimming with stingrays in Bora Bora - I just took pictures so Im OK with pretty much anything but yes the process is not what you think.
As to lettered editions - Suntup is one press that definitely makes completely different book with that edition. For the most part of every other publisher its an "upgrade" of sort over limited but not something totally new.

As much as I loved numbered editions that were published earlier this year, the lettereds will be a highlight for Subterranean Press for years to come.
There are many cool little elements about this production - I’m gonna point out the obvious ones.
This is the first time ever SP produced a book with bradel binding - where the boards are separate from the spine, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.
I love the train embossing on a traycase to match signature page and the tickets - which were also given out with numbered edition.

Amazing books (and photographs). The more I see Falling Angel from CP, the more I want it. (I'm about to start reading it, too)...

Wow, those Bancroft lettered editions are amazing! And it looks like SubPress used a different method of binding for them - fantastic and unique.

I passed on these as I hadn't read the novels and didn't know the author. Thanks for showing us how they look. Just gorgeous.

(And beautiful photos as always, Yegor).

Edited to add: oh, I see you mentioned the binding already. :) I should read the text instead of just gawking at the photos next time.

Here are some of the shots I did for Paul Suntup:
Neuromancer, 2021 - Lettered edition

I remember the first time I saw this prototype.
My immediate reaction was - holy sh@%! this is the most amazing and creative thing I have seen in my book collecting history! Imagine a printed circuit board that is absolutely perfect for a work of science fiction like this, with a title and Gibson' name looking beautifully so it looks like its always been there, it belonged.
The back board which is not shown in release photos is also printed with a beautiful logo.
Both Lettered and limited editions will be a collecting grail for years to come.

A few things to post from the last few weeks.

The Forever War by Joe Haldeman
Easton Press, 1988. What makes this book special?
It is signed by 3 people! Joe Haldeman and illustrator Vincent DiFate on the title page as well as Ben Bova who wrote an amazing intro for this novel.

Cardinal Black by Robert McCammon
Art by Vincent Chong, Cemetery Dance, 2020
This edition has been delayed by COVID-19 and when it finally arrived I could not wait to see what Brian and Cemetery Dance will do with the lettered, how will they continue the legacy that Subterranean started with earlier Corbett books.
It did not disappoint - although traycase leather feel is a bit different than SP, overall presentation is top notch, including beautiful endpapers and traycase inlays, design and of course Vinny Chong illustrations are amazing.
I ended up selling almost all of my McCammons earlier this year keeping only limited and lettered of this series.

Suntup Editions, 2020. Numbered and Lettered editions.
Since I do not own Misery anymore by Stephen King which is to me the best limited ( numbered ) edition ever made - I will venture out and say that this is very close second and it’s not that easy to choose .

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Suntup Editions - Roman Numeral Edition, one of only five copies.
Not often one gets to photograph a $13,000 book. This beauty of design and craftsmanship spent a few days with me on a project for Paul Suntup and it was really sad ( hard, devastating, whichever) to send it back to California😜.

Original Art and throughout the book is by Dave McKean.
Subterranean Press, 2020. One of 26 Lettered copies.
One of the biggest surprises of the year ( below on this) - this beautiful edition that I tried to capture some of my favorite production details and of course the stories.
When people were receiving these books at home they discovered that this edition was also signed by Stephen King who co-wrote on some stories with Joe Hill.
