H & S just announced a UK S/L of Sleeping Beauties signed by Stephen and Owen King! Limited to 250 copies! LINK (https://www.waterstones.com/book/sleeping-beauties/stephen-king/owen-king/9781473678019?utm_campaign=WSStephenKing70th210917&utm_content=12640620530&utm_medium=email&utm_source=WSStephenKing70th210917)

Details:

Dear Reader,

Today marks the 70th birthday of an author who has steered our popular culture like no other: Stephen King. From his 1974 debut Carrie to The Dark Tower and the current media frenzy surrounding his creation IT, we live in the world Stephen King has made.

Almost 70 novels and short-story collections on, if anything King is proving even more prolific. Hot on the heels of the recent End of Watch and Gwendy's Button Box, next Tuesday sees the publication of Sleeping Beauties, the master’s first collaboration with his son Owen King.

Sleeping Beauties Exclusive Edition
Pre-Order

To celebrate Stephen King in his 70th year, we offer Sleeping Beauties in both its standard edition, yours to pre-order at Half Price and something else very special. Absolutely exclusive to Waterstones, we present our beautiful, limited edition of Sleeping Beauties, signed by both Stephen King and Owen King.

Available now to pre-order, only 250 copies of this gorgeous volume are available worldwide, in an edition that features deluxe binding, slipcase and coloured endpapers.

https://cdn.waterstones.com/override/v6/large/9781/4736/9781473678019.jpg

Sleeping Beauties is a tale typical of King’s daring. Across the planet, women succumb to a strange, viral slumber, the remaining men turning almost primal in their absence. One woman, however – the mysterious Evie – seems immune, but is she the world’s saviour, or the world’s end?

Raise a glass, if you will, to one of literature’s true icons, a writer who so often captures the ordinary and drills down to what makes us most genuinely afraid. As Walter Mosley so memorably said, “he knows fear.”

Happy Birthday, Stephen King.

With all best wishes,

Your friends at Waterstones

I just checked and there is a link for questions and feedback to Waterstones. My advice would be for everyone who has ordered this book to use this link (http://waterstones.force.com/WaterStonesTicket) and specifically request the book is packaged well, stating the UTD and CTCC problems that have occurred in the past. If they get repeated comments, they might do something about it.

We cut to a scene where we find Simon driving a large unmarked panel truck. As he passes a pair of Coppers sitting in their vehicle; the rookie turns towards his Sgt. and states, "Hey, Sgt. That large panel truck looks very suspicious". The Sgt. leans forward to look past the young cop and spies Simon in the driver's seat. The Sgt. then tells the rookie, "Not at all. That's just Simon on his way to Waterstones to pick up the latest King book for all those bloody Yanks!" The Sgt. rolls his eyes and whispers under his breath, "Rookies."

If you're only paying £12 for shipping to the US, I don't see them sending it to you in anything but a standard parcel envelope. :scared:

The cost of shipping a box containing a 700 page book through Royal Mail is at least three times as much.

Just saying that it states that the book may NOT have been available at the time you ordered.
Of course it isn't available yet. It hasn't been produced yet (or if it has, it isn't ready for shipping until after 9/26/2017).

Nothing to worry about. The major worry is the potential of damage.

I used the contact link listed upthread. It will be interesting to hear what if any responses we receive.

I said:

I ordered the signed limited today. In the past, Waterstones shipping of books to the USA often were inadequately packaged, resulting in damage to the book. Since there are only 250 of the books, there likely won't be any to replace damaged copies.
Please pack mine in a fashion that will insure it arrives safely.
I'm more than willing to pay extra for robust packaging.

Best,

Please pack mine in a fashion that will insure it arrives safely. For example, please ship in a sturdy cardboard box big enough to allow for at least two inches of padding (foam peanuts, bubblewrap, etc.) on all sides of the book. Please pack tightly so book can't move at all once box is sealed. I'm more than willing to pay extra for this kind of robust packaging.

Same here! Ended up with three damaged copies of the same book. That was the last time I ordered from them and won't bother again.

The first time I ordered from them was one of those blue edged books. It was damaged and they replaced it with the plain white one.

If anyone is this concerned about damage occurring, you can have it shipped to me and I will pack it well and forward it on at cost. It will still go through the UK postal service, so I can’t guarantee pristine if they pack badly, but at least you will have the opportunity to have it inspected before it leaves the U.K.

Is anybody else considering cancelling their order? I would like a copy, but I also don't want a 360 dollar hassle. If it shows up dinged or basically anything short of perfect, it's going to drive me nuts. When people had issues like this, did you have to ship the damaged items back?

If anyone is this concerned about damage occurring, you can have it shipped to me and I will pack it well and forward it on at cost. It will still go through the UK postal service, so I can’t guarantee pristine if they pack badly, but at least you will have the opportunity to have it inspected before it leaves the U.K.

PM me for my address if this is something you want to do.

Will they allow an address change without cancelling the order?

I've been on the phone with Waterstones' Customer Service three times today. First, I get a call from my CC company saying that they detected possible fraudulent activity. I'm thinking, "that's great, awesome catch". Until they tell me they rejected a payment request to Waterstones!! I was even more pissed when the CC company told me that I would have to try the purchase again; already knowing that this book is sold out. So, I called Waterstones. They looked up my order number and acknowledged that the payment had been rejected, but that they would re-submit and call me when it went through.

Three hours, no phone call. So, I call them again. "Oh, we've been trying to call you, but the call just wouldn't go through." At least they were able to resubmit the order and they said it went through successfully.

Then, I remembered seeing something on this forum about the quality of previous US shipping fiascos from Waterstones, so I called again and asked them what i needed to do to assure the book was packaged correctly so as to avoid any shipping damage. She told me she would send a message to the "internet" team and pass along the message. I didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling with that, so I sent a message similar to the ones above. Hopefully, it will arrive intact.

If they could just mark it as an online purchase it shouldn't flag anything. It probably looks awful funny that we are magically in UK at a chain bookstore one day when I bought dinner in Texas last night.

I got my shipping notice as well. Crossing my fingers for save travels across the pond. I guess I don't have much of a choice if it has damage. They won't have any replacements, so either I keep it with the damage or return it for a full refund.

No doubt! The fraud protection is great and all but come on already! One thing that might work for you guys is to get a PayPal debt card and transfer money into your PayPal account. Not sure if the PayPal credit card will issue a fraud alert but I was able to order from Amazon UK using my PayPal debt. So far that's the only way I've found around the whole fraud protection deal. My bank refuses to lift the international ban on my debt card even when I asked to sign a wavier to approve charges before they are outright denied. However, I still haven't gotten an email about the S/L nor a phone call stating one way or the other. Ordered it with my PayPal debt card as well.

I received the fraud alert when I initially made the purchase - but it came right up on my phone and I was able to say it was okay - then called CC company just to double check it was good - and they said everything looked fine. Got shipping notice this morning around 0945. Will see how this one is packed - hopefully everyone else's cc issues will be resolved.

Since it is still listed as sold out on site - and so many issues with fraud alert occurred - I would hope they will wait to hear from those buyers

Thanks for that! I opened a ticket with them yesterday to ask how many times they would resubmit before cancelling. I haven't received any kind of notice... no attempt from Waterstones and no fraud alert from my bank. I got a text 30 minutes ago from my bank saying that there was a purchase from waterstones. it was just an oversees change alert that I have set up from when I was in Jamaica but not a fraud alert. joys of using a credit card is it never shows up on the card until the next day or so and my tracking page has not updated so I have no idea if it went through or they just tried and failed.

They are shrinkwrapped but it will not protect them. It's too thin. The Amazon type mailer is fine for our great post in the UK, but none will survive the journey to the USA without better packing.

Not great news for our American (and elsewhere) friends I'm afraid. I got my copy through the post and it came in this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7m11oedil04ovwc/Photo%2027-09-2017%2C%2011%2055%2000.jpg?raw=1

No bubble wrap or anything in there - just the book. Thankfully mine was totally undamaged but not sure how these will fare on their journey across the pond.

Here's my number:

I don't want to add fuel to the fire here, but the way the book itself has had it's cover printed, is kind of like a foil 'wrap'. It's beautiful and amazing when the light reflects upon it, but I can see that it will be VERY susceptible to damage, either as scratches or if it suffered some rubbing. It is sealed in plastic and a very snug fit in the slipcase, but if it is allowed to move around in that thin cereal box of a package... :scared:

I really hope that Waterstones have done something better for books going across the pond.

The Library Policeman
09-27-2017, 04:19 AM
What gets me is, for roughly $10 more per person, they could send them securely boxed. I sent a couple copies of the WH Smith edition Stateside for £19.90 each which included tracking. They were boxed, bubble wrapped and had packing peanuts inside. I believe Waterstones charged £12 shipping for foreign orders - so for an extra £8 ( which I'm sure everyone would have willingly paid) they could have sent them worry free. Bonkers!

Brian861
09-27-2017, 04:32 AM
That packaging is how my BCEs arrive. You'd think with a S/L they would care better care in shipping, even within the UK. I can understand about them caring less in regards to trades. Those are reading copies to the rest of the world, outside of the collecting community. But when a S/L is published, it's published for one reason; to collect. Having it sent to a UK member in the future is definitely the best option.

I wonder if there is a travelling 'Corner Cruncher' job in the UK. He started at Waterstones for UTD then made his way to Folio for The Shining. Let's see if he makes his way back to Waterstones for this one.

How could (I suppose it could happen, but weird) a brand new S/L be anything other than a first printing?

Many S/L's don't even have a number line, so that is a rather obtuse question.

Mine is similar, and when I removed the wrap, those areas are scuffed, but not bumped. There are a few other light dings too. It could be worse, but I'm still pissed. I emailed customer support and kind of read them the riot act just to see what they have to say.

Seems like a possibility. Regardless, that's the first and last time I'm ordering through them, unless they somehow wow me with their response to this situation, which I doubt is going to happen. It's just so stupid that they ship expensive books so irresponsibly. I've bought books from ebayers that have been packaged in cereal boxes, but even those sellers have added padding so that the books aren't damaged. These Waterstones dickbags basically gift wrap their books in cardboard for shipping.
