I've been buying Stephen King books for almost 30 years, and "collecting" them for maybe 20. My collection is modest, but I hope you enjoy seeing it.

I have a few interesting items and a lot of commonplace ones. I'll post the boring stuff first, and work my way up to the pinnacle of my collection, purchased just a couple of weeks ago.

I'll mostly be posting books on shelves, so if you want to see more than just the spine of a particular edition, just ask and I'll post an image of the front cover.

First post: Mass market paperbacks.

Most of these paperbacks were bought in Australia in the late '80s and early '90s, before I started buying hardcovers. Australia gets UK versions, as you can see, split between New English Library and Futura paperbacks.

Notable editions:

Night Shift - this was the first Stephen King book I ever bought, in 1985 or 1986. My high school English teacher had us study the prologue, and a couple of the stories - The Mangler, and Night Surf, if memory serves - right alongside Graham Greene and George Orwell.
IT - This paperback copy was the first Stephen King novel I ever bought, in '87 or so. It remains one of my absolute favourites.
The Tommyknockers - there are two copies of The Tommyknockers, as one is the international edition with the same "Ship in the Earth" illustration as on the hardcover.

None of these volumes is particularly collectible, they just have value to me, as they are some of my oldest King books.

Dark Tower mass-market paperbacks

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_7872.JPG

A mish-mash of Dark Tower UK paperback editions. The first three Sphere editions were bought in the early '90s in Australia - I love the cover art. DT IV was bought after I moved to the US, shipped from the UK, in around '99.

Volumes 5-7 were bought in 2008, in Frankfurt airport in Germany. These are the international UK editions, and I purchased them because the standard UK editions are B-format, which are larger. Volume 4.5 was also bought in Germany, for the same reason.

The volumes lying on top of volumes 1-7 are the UK and US editions of the revised Gunslinger.

These volumes are unsigned trade editions. Some limited print-run editions are included, but only from large publishers, not small presses like Grant, CD, PS or SubPress.

These hardcovers were bought between the late '80s and the present. Although I now live in the US, I still tend to buy the UK editions when possible. I'm not a completist, but I have started buying multiple editions of the more recent titles.

Notable editions:

The Talisman - this is the first hardcover King novel I bought, used from a university book store, in '87 or '88.
IT to The Regulators - these are all book club editions, and are pretty much worthless. I went through a phase where I preferred these paperback-sized hardcovers, much to the detriment - unknowingly - of my collection's value. Such is life.
Gerald's Game and Dolores Claiborne - I have heard that these UK book club editions were the world-wide first edition of these books. If so, I lucked out, as these copies appear to be first printings. If I recall correctly, I bought them from a major chain in the UK in 1992, at a discount.
Under the Dome - the Scribner edition is the unsigned limited edition with the bronze title tape and the illustrated cards, still in shrinkwrap. I got it for under $20, so I suspect it's not worth much.
11/22/63 - the trade and unsigned limited editions - the latter is the PS dust-jacketed edition
Doctor Sleep - the trade, W H Smith, Waterstones, and unsigned limited editions
Joyland - The paperback, "turtleback", unsigned limited and unsigned illustrated editions
Mr Mercedes - the trade and W H Smith editions
Revival - the trade, W H Smith, blue-edged Waterstones, and unsigned limited edition with silver plectrum
Finder Keepers - trade and W H Smith editions
The Bazaar of Bad Dreams - trade and W H Smith editions
End of Watch - trade and W H Smith editions

Dark Tower Trade Paperbacks and Hardcovers

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_7900.JPG

These are my trade paperback and trade hardcover copies of the Dark Tower series.

Volumes 1-3 are Sphere editions from the UK, and have all the color plate illustrations. Wizard and Glass is also from the UK, but lacks any colour plates.

The Wind Through the Keyhole editions include the trade, W H Smith and unsigned limited editions (with the PS Publishing-issued dustjacket).

Bruce is correct Jack, also not seeing your images. Photobucket have recently changed their policy on allowing images to be linked and unless you pay a ridiculous amount of money per year, no-one is ever going to see your no doubt wonderful collection.

I would suggest uploading them directly to this site by creating an album (there is a menu option at the top of the page, under the main banner called "Gallery", select this then find the option for "upload photo") or by using a different, (less greedy) image hosting site.

Thanks for all the positive feedback, everyone! I appreciate it.

Zelig, you're right that these copies mean a lot to me. These are the copies of King's work that I bought and read for the first time. These are the copies I use when I occasionally reread a passage or chapter. Most of these books have travelled with me literally from the other side of the world.

They're not worth very much, and despite my best care, have the occasional dent, chip or crease. But they are very personal to me.

Next up will be unsigned-but-limited editions.

Unsigned (by King), limited (in some way) editions

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_7909.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_79032.JPG

This hodgepodge of a collection falls into the gap between regular trade editions and the lofty pinnacle of editions signed by King. They are of some rarity, or are limited editions, but not signed by King.

Most of these I bought new. I'm especially fond of the UK editions of the Bachman paperbacks. The copy of Rage is pretty much immaculate, and The Long Walk was found in a used bookstore in Sydney, Australia, for the princely sum of $2.50.

Unsigned Dark Tower editions

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/FullSizeRender5.jpg

A few personal notes:

Volumes 1-7 are the first trade or Artist editions, in the three Grant slipcases.
The DTIV sampler was a freebie if you bought the Desperation/Regulators hardcover set in 1996; a bookstore cashier gave me one gratis when she caught me staring at a stack of them on the counter.
Wizard and Glass was the first ever "collectible" limited edition book I bought. (I also bought a second "reading" copy at the same time, because I'd waited 5 years to read the darn thing!)
The Fantasy and Science Fiction issues are those containing the original Gunslinger stories. I bought them as a set about 15 years ago, and they are pretty much pristine.

I have some additional Grant Dark Tower trade volumes, including a first edition DTII signed by Phil Hale, the third edition DTI, and the second edition DTII. I don't have a Gunslinger 1984 edition ... yet.

Non-Dark Tower Signed Editions

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_7928.JPG

My signed King collection is very modest, and all are limited editions, as opposed to signed trades. A few items of interest:

The CD signed limited edition of IT is a personal favourite, just because IT is my favourite King novel - yes, even despite THAT scene. I missed out on this edition when it first went up for sale, but CD had a few extras on publication due to failed payments, and I picked up one of those. I can't believe how lucky I was.
I managed to order this copy of the signed Scribner edition of 11/22/63 before the Scribner website melted, and they had to resort to a random draw for the remaining copies. The slipcase is from CD.

Very cool S/L's. IT is also a personal fave of mine (and 99% of other King collectors, I think! Great edition). While I did not like the novel Doctor Sleep, I do really love the S/L. The traycase and interior artwork are superb.

Dark Tower Signed Editions

(Sorry for the long delay between posts; I had to resize some images to fit this one)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/FullSizeRender_2.jpg

This is a very recent acquisition from a member here, to whom I am very grateful. This set is a matching S/L set of DT III-VII and Little Sisters. The DT 4.5 pictured is an Artist edition.

This set is by far the pinnacle of my entire collection. I have various exclusive editions from other authors - including some lettered editions from small-print publishers - but this matching S/L set beats them all. Really thrilled to have it.

I'm still looking for S/L editions of DT I, II and Keyhole - non-matching, as I have a high number.

I recently managed to find a Signed Limited Grant Edition of The Drawing of the Three:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_8182.JPG

As you can see, the spine of the dustjacket has a slight wave in it from a too-tight Brodart cover, but otherwise the volume is in very good condition. The case has a few scuffs on the back corners, but not bad for a 30 year-old book.

Really pleased to get this. Still looking for a S/L Gunslinger and S/L Wind Through the Keyhole.

This is one fine collection. I have a set of high number DT books as well so a completed matching set is out of the question. I don't even know if I will be able to get a S\L GS so if you do, you will be one up on me. I just need a WTTKH S\L and I will be good to go. Your sleeping beauties collection and your unsigned limited books are all great. I did not even know there were different versions of SB or how to get them. So you are one up on me. Keep on going. It's a flipback edition of the book. The entire text is included, and the book itself is only about the size of a smartphone. The pages are super thin, like a Bible. Onion skin? Whatever it's called.

It may not be very practical - I doubt I'll ever read it - but it's a fun variant on the usual.

In the "used to be rare" category:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_8593.JPG

I picked this up for a steal on eBay. It's not rare or collectible, but that wasn't always the case.

Until about a year ago, the only widely-available audiobook for The Regulators was abridged. This unabridged recording did exist, but the only edition of it that I'm aware of was done by BooksOnTape for libraries, and it was pretty hard to find. Many King audiophiles didn't even know it existed. Crazy that the only unabridged recording of a King novel - read by Frank Muller, no less - was so unobtainable.

Then, about a year ago, this edition was published, and audible also made it available. I have the library edition already, on cassette, but these CDs will have much better sound quality.

Normally I wouldn't have bothered posting it, but thought people might be interested in its history, in case you weren't aware.

By the way, there's also an unabridged recording of Desperation narrated by King himself, that was equally obscure and hard to get, and also now generally available.

I don't collect anthologies much at all, but with signatures from three of my favourite authors, I couldn't pass it up. The slipcase has seen better days, but the book is much better, and the price was right.

SubPress had a massive PC sale this morning, for charity, and I might have gotten a bit carried away. :)

So my King collecting will be put on hold for a while. I still have a few preordered items coming in later this year, but my wallet is definitely on hiatus.

I could not get the S/L link to work, and the lettered link only showed a few books. Typical of the Sub Press problems I'm having lately.

Did you buy any of the Vance or Ellison books?

Hunchback Jack
03-05-2018, 02:34 PM
The site was very slow, but held up well enough for my transaction to (eventually) go through. It was pretty frenzied - almost everything was sold in the first 30 minutes, and the really hot items went in the first 5.

I did not get any Vance or Ellison, but picked up a couple by other authors. The lettered and limited editions of The Dying Earth - both signed - were available, but they went almost immediately. Had my focus not been elsewhere, I definitely would have tried for it.

All for a good cause; the proceeds went to a charity for research into Lupus.

I was ready and refreshing, with my credit card number copied and ready to paste, to shave off every second, and I still missed the main book I was trying to grab (Ready Player One Lettered). I did manage to snag my second choice, but then I hesitated for about 2 minutes on what I wanted next and by the time I decided it didn't even matter because practically everything was gone!

And what's nice is that these are actually in stock so we should get them this week... I'm so used to pre-orders that it will be a nice treat...

I really like how you broke up your collection for easier viewing along with notable items explained. I think I’ll try to give that a shot with mine. Man, don’t get me wrong, all the limited and lettered editions are amazing to see here on TDT, but I really enjoyed your Mass Market Paperback pictures! One of my goals is to have a home with a fireplace, a comfortable chair near it, and a tall and wide bookshelf near the chair with nothing but mass market paperbacks in it. I think the phrase, “curl up with a good book” was meant to describe getting comfortable with a mass market paperback that just kind of molds to your hands. Anyway, I seem to have a case of rambling on this morning... thanks for sharing your collection!

I'm going to try, but listings often don't describe the endpapers unless the seller knows about the two variants. There was actually a listing for both on eBay, maybe 6 months ago, but I missed out on it.

Also, I believe the UK book club edition of Dolores Claiborne is the true first.

Yes, I'll be keeping my BCA edition of Dolores. I've heard the same thing about the book club edition of Gerald's Game as well, but I'm not sure it's really true. I'll keep that one as well, anyway, as it's a nice copy. :)

Only if they're for the original price, which I doubt they will be. I'm all for capitalism but when things like this are scooped up just to resell them for twice the price my ire begins to rise whether I like it or not. And I DO NOT do anything with Facebook.

It's been a while since I posted anything here, as I've been holding off on many King acquisitions, due to some recent significant non-King purchases. But I picked up these over the last few weeks:
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9673.JPG

The slipcased N&D is the U.K. "Christmas Gift" edition. It is unnumbered, so I don't know how many copies were produced. The slipcase on this copy is in remarkable condition; many of them suffer from wear and fraying issues. The book itself has a facsimile signature on a bookplate, and an embossed image on the front cover. Not worth very much, but being a UK edition collector, this is my thing.

That sig is a bit of a trap. Without the label on the slipcase - which can be removed - it would be very easy to think it was genuine. As far as I know, Hodder did not release signed editions of these volumes, though.

These type of "deluxe trade editions" probably won't appreciate much, because they aren't that rare, and don't have the appeal of a real signature or the craftsmanship of a small press limited. But I like them for the little extra touches they have.

I'd really like to know whether Hodder released a deluxe or signed edition of Gerald's Game. It was published around this time, but I've never seen one.

Hunchback Jack
06-22-2018, 10:17 AM
Okay, my last post here for a while.

Two new U.K. S/L editions: Desperation/Regulators and TWTTK (1 of 200):

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9688.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9689.JPG

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_9690.JPG

The slipcase of the D/R set was showing its age a bit, but a gentle cleaning improved it greatly - it was just a bit dirty. There are a few very minor defects to the gold foil stamping on the spines of both books, but nothing to get worked up about. All in all, they are probably VG to VG+ condition.

Nothing to say about the TWTTK, except that it's missing the slipcase label stating it's a 1 of 200 edition. Not a big deal, either.

I like that DESPERATION/REGULATORS. Mainly because I need one too!

Thanks! I really like it, too.

Hodder was a bit cheeky with this edition of The Regulators, as I recall. There wasn't anything on the dustjacket to say that the book was actually by King. They just put Bachman's name in the same font - which they had used exclusively for King for 5 years, by that point - and displayed it alongside Desperation in bookstores. They just relied on readers to know (or figure out) it was King.

ETA: This is not correct; see Simon's post here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?21113-Book-Collection-Hunchback-Jack&p=1115295&viewfull=1#post1115295) to get the real story.

The set is a nice nod to the association between the two novels, as well.

Thanks, Mike. I'm not worried; I have (finally!) learned to collect what I like, and so long as I'm happy with the price when I buy it, I don't focus much on value after that. I don't flip or sell books very often.

Those are really nice. I haven’t seen many of the UK S/Ls yet but I can see why you like them.

Thanks, Adam. I "grew up" with UK editions, so I kind of love them. These Hodder editions don't have many special features beyond the signature itself, but I like the look of them. They have become my recent focus when collecting King.

Thanks, Frank! Yes, there are some copies available that either have condition problems or are (in my opinion) a little on the high side. This set was acceptable in both aspects, for me at least.

Yes, peri, I lived in Australia for my first 30-odd years of life. I've been living in the US for about the last 20. Dual citizen now, but I still have family and friends back home.

HBJ

Actually thats not accurate. The H & S Trade copy had a sticker on the front and some additional blurb on the back to show Bachman was in fact King. The US Dutton edition on the other hand had no mention of King on the outer Dust jacket and only referred to King in a comparison ("Bachman has been described as Stephen King without a conscience") and as the writer of the introduction. Even though it had been years since the news broke and Thinner and the Bachman books were re-released, Dutton continued with the pretence.

Thanks, Adam. Yes, it's a nice copy; a few minor smudges on the slipcase, but the book is in good condition. The bleeding of the signature and number is not ideal, but I'm hoping that confirms it's a real signature. :)

Insomnia will be a tough nut to crack. I don't think it came in a slipcase, so finding a copy with a clean page block will be next to impossible. I've only seen one on the market since I've started looking, and it had just a few too many condition problems for me to pull the trigger, given the asking price.

Nice! That's one I'd like to have.

Very nice. One on my want list too. Congrats

Thanks, guys.

Recently, there were a few copies available on ebay and ABE in the $800-900 range, but it looks like they sold. Not that I would pay that, incidentally; $600 is more reasonable. Just be patient, I guess.

Congrats, Peter!

Thanks, Brian!

Great pick up Peter. I only have one Hodder but you make me want to try and find some more.

Thanks a lot, Mike.

I like Hodder S/Ls a lot, but they are a bit of a mixed bag. On the plus side, they tend to have smaller printing runs, and the earlier titles are quite nicely made, both books and slipcases being bound in leather. On the downside, the later titles are a bit cheaper, with the slipcase bound in cloth, and the book not being any different in construction from the trade edition. Many of the signatures through the "series" are on bookplates, too, not on the title page.

So a lot of collectors don't really find them that desirable. I really like them, because UK editions are "my thing", and I like the look of them.

I've been moving some books out of storage and re-discovered this, so I thought I'd take a few pics and post them.

Knowing Darkness, edited by George Beahm, from Centipede Press:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_00041.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_00051.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_00061.JPG

It's hard to convey how nice this book is, from the photos. It's HUGE, and HEAVY. The slipcase and book are bound in this gorgeous printed silk, incredibly soft to the touch. The book spine is covered in black velvet. The pages are glossy, and there are many fold-out illustrations. I've heard that this edition has problems with the binding cracking from the weight of the pages, but I've been very careful with this copy, and it still looks okay.

I actually have two copies of KD. That I have this book at all, though, is just dumb luck.

Cemetery Dance was offering new copies for $150 back in 2011. Even at half price, that was more than I would normally pay for almost any book back then - I didn't have a single signed King book in my collection - and I hesitated for a full day before deciding to take a chance on it. A year later, CD had a few dinged copies for $99, and I picked up one of those as well.

(BTW, I'm not confusing Cemetery Dance and Centipede Press; CP was the publisher; CD was selling it through their website on CP's behalf)

These pictures are of the dinged copy; the slipcase is damaged, but the book itself is completely fine. The pristine 2011 copy is still in shrinkwrap on my bookshelf, fresh out of storage.

$150 for that in 2011? It seems like not more than 5-10 years ago the cost of collecting King was considerably less prohibitive. What happened? Or am I mistaken? What did, say, a lettered Green Mile go for upon release? Or The Stand (coffin) or CP Salem’s Lot? Asbestos Firestarter? Do those have list prices anywhere near their current values?

Well, I don't know if $150 was market price for Knowing Darkness in 2011. Perhaps the title was not selling well at the list price of $295, and CD decided to heavily discount it as a result. After it had sold out, it might have sold for higher than $150 on the secondary market - although not $295, presumably.

Having said that, the King market is crazy right now. Others can probably say why better that I can, but my opinion is that the increased demand for King collectibles is caused by a combination of two things: social media groups raising awareness of King editions to a wider group of collectors, and speculators in the market buying items to flip because it's hot. So some of the price increases of the past few years are legitimate, caused by the increase in "real" demand, and some of it is due to a speculative bubble, which may see a correction some point in the future.

Nice going! Yeah, you can sometimes get lucky like that with CD's or SubPress's dinged sales.

My dinged copy of KD is definitely dinged though. :) Big ol' dent in the bottom edge of the slipcase, and some of the silk cover is peeling away on one slipcase corner.

Yes Mike, the rare ones with more value are red. Blue has no extra value over black. It was just a mistake and one would not care I imagine if they were blue or black. RED... yes that be awesome!

WOW. That is awesome. A big congrats to you.
It looks like there is a "Just after sunset" one as well. And Revival.
Those are two that were listed on "The Collectors" website
http://www.stephenkingcollector.com/uk_limiteds.html

Thanks, Mike!

Both of the editions you mention have Facsimile signatures. I have them, but don't count them as being part of this "set".
OK then. It looks like you are good to go. Congrats.

If I remember from the website, it said 185 signed in Black ink. 15 signed in Red ink (for private distribution). There are your 200 copies.

Read Kris’s last post above.
I read that. This is what I was talking about. Right from the website.

Got you. I thought the red one would be sent out at a different time then the rest. That's all.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is a cool achievement!

Thanks, Kris. I'm pretty darn thrilled, I must admit.

Awesome! You found that Insomnia quick! They look great all together like that. Way to go, pal.

I found Insomnia through a certain Facebook group. I can't believe the condition it's in. Just stunning.

Look great, man! That is a hell of a set (one which i am lagging behind in) Bravo!

Thanks, Chad. I've had this "set" as my specific King-collecting goal for about a year, and that focus really helped me (as well as all the great people here).

Congratulations man they look great!

Thanks very much, Alan.

They do look really nice all together. Congrats, Peter!

Don't they just? Thanks, Brian!

Great U.K. set. Those are ones I would really like to have.

Thanks, jon10g. Copies do come up every now and then, but you have to be patient - particularly if you want to pay a fair price!

Nice job.

Thanks, Becca. I guess we all have our collecting niches, and this is mine, so I'm pretty excited.

Incidentally, now that most folks have received their Misery S/Ls, I lifted the spoiler tags from my previous post. You can see it here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?21113-Book-Collection-Hunchback-Jack&p=1119034&viewfull=1#post1119034).

I got this a while back, and you've all seen the photos already. But I can't help but to show off my copy of this very cool edition.

I’ve been meaning to do the same thing. We all have our own ways of taking pictures so it’s enjoyable to see them, even if the same book has been posted.

I must admit, I do it partly as a self-indulgence. It gives me a chance to admire the books again.

Thanks, Mike. It truly is!

I have a very well worn NEL PB copy of The Long Walk, and have been looking for a better one. I finally found one:

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_0489.JPG
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_0490.JPGhttp://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/930/IMG_0491.JPG

The photos don't do the book justice. There's a reflection in the cover that makes the color look uneven in the last photo, and the light direction makes the spine looks sun faded in the second photo, but the book has neither of these problems. It actually looks amazing for a 38 year old book.
