I had this idea years ago, where you'd take all of the Castle Rock-set stories and do it as something of a dramatic soap opera, with everything interconnected and ending with the apocalyptic events of Needful Things. I expect my royalty check in the mail any day now . . .

This is real. I'm a betting man that this ties in with the novella that King and Richard worked on too. JJ and King I think are quite friendly too.... this could be FANTASTIC if done right!!!!

The articles popping up about this teaser are calling it a limited anthology series, though no official indication for that is given. Very plausible, of course. Or it could be an ongoing series with a throughline plot.

They're new. That wasn't Kathy Bates as Annie or Tim Curry as Pennywise at least.

It sounds like they're taking one of the cool things about reading King where there are so many mentions of other characters and interactions between books and stories and weaving that into a connective narrative. Could be interesting.

The Hollywood Reporter speculates that Castle Rock will be an anthology series where "each season will follow a different set of character and story lines while interjecting themes and specific characters from previous seasons," like how Fargo mines the Coen Brothers' cinematic universe.

A few more details:

http://deadline.com/2017/02/castle-rock-jj-abrams-stephen-king-hulu-limited-series-1201915527/

Following their collaboration on 11.22.63, J.J. Abrams is reteaming with Stephen King for another Hulu limited series based on King’s works. Titled Castle Rock, the series is being written by Manhattan creator Sam Shaw and Dusty Thomason.

Castle Rock, from Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros TV where the company is under a deal, is based on short stories by King. It is named after Castle Rock, the fictional area in King’s native Maine that serves as the setting for a number of his novels, novellas, and short stories.

Like the sound of that. Baed on actual stories by King, instead of something like Haven. Maybe we will finally get adaptations of Mrs. Todd's Shortcut. The Man in the Black Suit, Nona, It Grows On You, and other Castle Rock tales.

10 episodes, with production scheduled to begin later this year.

A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.

WTF. IT is capitalized as IT is an it always will be. Wherever IT is, it is there. No debating it, IT has been the capitalized for every "it"eration of the novel and the book. There are ~16,601 it usages in the novel IT. most are lowercase as they are not used as the novel title, nor the monsters name.

‘Moonlight’s’ André Holland to Star in Hulu Series ‘Castle Rock’ (http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/moonlight-andre-holland-hulu-castle-rock-1202423364/)

“Moonlight” star André Holland has been cast as the lead in Hulu’s upcoming original series “Castle Rock,” Variety has learned. The series is described as a psychological-horror drama set in the Stephen King multiverse, with the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, having served as the setting for many of King’s books. Holland will play Henry, a death row attorney with a unique and complicated history in the town.

Stephen King's world is about to take over.

No, residents shouldn't fret about a rabid dog named Cujo running around, nor will people get possessed by supernatural forces.

New England Studios will only have the look of King's fictional town -- Castle Rock, Maine -- the setting of many of his horror stories.

Production crews have already moved in to produce a 10-episode Hulu series this summer called "Castle Rock." It will be a high-profile "psychological-horror series" from well-known executive producer J.J. Abrams and King, according to Hulu.

The production crews are starting to build sets on site. Filming is expected to begin in August and run until January.

Some of the filming will also take place in Orange -- a small town 45 minutes west of Leominster.

"It's a really exciting and prestigious project," said David Hartman, director of the Massachusetts Production Coalition. "Landing a TV series for the state is a major win, and an indication of how far the industry has come here."

Numerous movies have been produced in the Bay State in the last decade -- "The Town," "Black Mass," "Manchester By The Sea," "American Hustle" and more -- but TV series have stayed away.

Hartman estimated that it's been more than 25 years since a scripted TV series was produced in Massachusetts.

"It's been quite a while," he said. "But now we have the right infrastructure, crew and talent base, and a stable incentive program to land this big one.

"Once we have one series, it encourages others to look at bringing a series here," he added.

Unlike a movie that will film for only two or three months in an area, officials hope the series will come back to the region for future seasons.

"A good series can keep us busy for quite a while," Hartman said.

"More workers will be here for longer," he added. "It helps increase spending, and supporting local businesses."

Some of the jobs these series bring to the area include electricians, carpenters and accountants. Hotels typically fill up with the talent and production crews.

The series will be based on the characters and stories created by King.

"A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, 'Castle Rock' combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King's best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland," reads a description from Hulu.

" 'Castle Rock' is an original suspense/thriller -- a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories," Hulu adds.

Sets are getting built in Devens as the Legislature takes a look at the decade-old film tax credit. Last month, the state Senate adopted a proposal to impose more stringent requirements for studios to qualify. The amendment would save the state about $15 million annually from the $80 million it now extends in credits.

The Senate incorporated the proposal into its budget bill, which will be reconciled with the House budget in a conference committee before being sent to the governor's desk. Gov. Charlie Baker in his first budget proposed phasing out the film tax credit.

Hartman said he hopes the tax credit does not get altered. It's been a "crucial" piece in landing films over the last decade, he said.

"We've been working very hard to advocate for our industry, and make sure there are no changes to impact production," Hartman said.

Film companies can become eligible for the tax credit now if half their production expenditures are made in Massachusetts or if half of their principal photography days are spent in the state, under the law. The proposal would require those companies to either spend 75 percent or shoot 75 percent in Massachusetts to qualify.

New England Studios in Devens was established in 2013. The studio has served as the location for special effects done in "Central Intelligence" starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart, as well as a small romantic comedy "Tumbledown," in which Jason Sudeikis and Rebecca Hall shot a scene in a Shirley diner.

Hulu’s mysterious Stephen King/J.J. Abrams series Castle Rock is starting to cast its town residents. EW has confirmed that Sissy Spacek, who played the iconic title character in the film adaptation of King’s Carrie, and Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe) will both be joining the show. The actresses join previously cast member Andre Holland (Moonlight) in the 10-episode psychological horror series set in the titular town and King’s multiverse.

Spacek plays “Ruth Deaver, estranged adoptive mother of Henry (Holland), a retired professor whose fading memories may hold a key to Castle Rock’s unsettling past.”

Meanwhile, Levy is “Jackie, the death-obsessed, self-appointed historian of Castle Rock.”

The series is being developed by Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason (Abrams will executive produce with the duo) and will begin shooting this year.

Aspiring actors or hardcore Stephen King fans could have a chance to be an extra in the new television series based off King's world of horror.

"Castle Rock," the 10-episode thriller series to play on Hulu, is searching for people in Massachusetts to be extras.

Slate Casting is holding an open call on July 18, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Orange Town Hall Auditorium, according to its website.

At open call, people will have their photo taken to be considered as an extra for the show. Those who cannot make open call can fill out a submission form online.

Castle Rock is the creepy, but fictional, Maine town first mentioned in King's 1979 novel "The Dead Zone." It has also appeared in in Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and other King works.

The series is being filmed in Orange as well as at New England Studios in Devens.

Hulu has called the show a "first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories."

Castle Rock is produced by J.J. Abrams with his company Bad Robot Productions, Warner Bros. Television and executive producers/writers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, Hulu said.

Abrams is known for co-writing, producing and directing the blockbuster hit film Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

http://www.telegram.com/news/20170801/lancaster-house-being-used-in-stephen-king-miniseries

Get your creep on: An old Victorian house on Neck Road that last sold on Halloween 2011 will be featured in a new television series based on Stephen King novels.

Film crews arrived early Tuesday morning for three days of filming in and around the circa-1900 big white house at 170 Neck Road.

The 10-episode Hulu series, called “Castle Rock” after a fictional Maine town depicted in several of King’s books, will weave characters and themes from his books and novellas into episodes of psycho-horror.

Steve Arnold, production designer, said the house was chosen because it has a formal symmetrical facade indicative of the mid nineteenth century Second Empire style.

“Its symmetry and simplicity is a counterpoint to some of the other houses we are using in the series which are much more eccentric,” he said in an email. “We were particularly interested in the house because of how it is situated being set back from the road with an expansive front yard. This works well for a particular shot that we need.”

Neck Road from Centerbridge Road to Packard Street was closed Tuesday to all but residents. According to a July 24 letter sent to residents, filming will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Monday, Aug. 7. Some driving scenes will be filmed Wednesday morning and Monday evening on Packard. The letter from location manager Kevin Foster says “there will be no car chases, explosions or gunfire. Just dead bodies.”

Jean Lidstone, who lives on Neck Road, said she noticed a lot of big trucks carrying props up and down the street in the early morning Tuesday. Ms. Lidstone said her house was also considered for filming.

“The location scout dropped off a letter saying our house was being considered for the show, but no one called back to photo the inside and outside,” Ms. Lidstone said. “The letter said if chosen, we would receive financial compensation based on the scope and extent of the filming.”

According to the town assessor’s office, the five-bedroom, three-bathroom Victorian at 170 Neck Road is owned by Hollis Petri and Heidi Horton. It sold on Oct. 31, 2011, for $280,000.

The fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine, first appeared in King’s 1979 novel “The Dead Zone” and is referenced in “Cujo,” “The Stand,” “It,” “Creepshow,” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” The town reappeared in his 2013 novel “Doctor Sleep” and 2014′s “Revival.”

The streaming series will star Sissy Spacek (reunited with King’s work after her famous role as “Carrie” in the 1976 blockbuster) and Andre Holland, who was in the Oscar-winning movie “Moonlight.” Holland will star in the series as Henry, a death row lawyer with a complicated history in Castle Rock. Spacek portrays his estranged adoptive mother, a retired professor.

Scenes for the series, the first scripted television series filmed in Massachusetts since the 1980s-era “Spenser: For Hire,” have also been shot in Hudson and Orange, and at a soundstage at Devens. The series is produced by J.J. Abrams and his company, Bad Robot Productions.

Unlike the May filming of scenes for the upcoming feature film “Daddy’s Home 2” in nearby Clinton, there were no onlookers – or King fans – at either end of Neck Road on Tuesday. The neighborhood was quiet, with one police officer on duty to keep the curious away.

http://www.recorder.com/About-Orange-town-employees-working-as-Castle-Rock-extras-11618745

Town Hall will not be closed on Aug. 8, but you can expect delays when production crews film scenes in downtown Orange and at the First Universalist Church for “Castle Rock,” an upcoming series inspired by the works of horror writer Stephen King.

Joseph Stargensky, a freelance location manager for Hulu, the subscription video-on-demand service producing “Castle Rock,” said traffic will be detoured around the center of town for the early part of the day, but he did not see a reason to close Town Hall. He said the main intersection will close from 5:30 a.m. to noon so filming can last from 7 a.m. until noon. Filming, he said, will move to the church on North Main Street in the afternoon.

Downtown businesses will remain open to pedestrian traffic during filming.

Stargensky said he and other location managers are working with 50 businesses in Orange to ensure they are accommodated. Some businesses have already been dressed up to appear as though they are in Castle Rock, a fictional town in King’s home state of Maine.

“They’re all on board,” Stargensky said at Tuesday’s Selectboard meeting in Town Hall. “They’ve been great.”

Orange Financial Director Gabriele Voelker had some concerns about how Town Hall’s eight employees would get to work on Aug. 8. Stargensky and location manager Alex Berard said an alternate parking lot can be found for them and shuttles can bring them to Town Hall. He also said the production would pay for a catered lunch so employees don’t have to leave the building.

“This is what we do. We’re solution-oriented,” Stargensky said. “We’ll find a way to get you to work.”

He also said drone footage will at some point be shot for the series. Filming, which Stargensky said started on July 31, is also being done at New England Studios in Devens.

Stargensky also handed over two checks — one for employee overtime accrued from a July 18 open casting call that drew nearly 1,700 people to Town Hall, and another for the filming slated for Aug. 8. Stargensky and Voelker declined to disclose how much the checks were for.

In other “Castle Rock” news, the three Selectmen said they have no issue with town employees working as background actors in the series if selected, though it would have to be on the employees’ own time.

“Castle Rock” is being produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot, the production company of J.J. Abrams, creator of “Lost,” “Felicity” and the films “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Mission: Impossible.”

http://www.recorder.com/Filming-of-Castle-Rock-in-downtown-Orange-11741173

If you were walking through downtown Orange on Tuesday, or should we say “Castle Rock,” you may have wondered what happened to local businesses like Quik Cutz hair styling salon or Sunjays bubble tea shop. Don’t worry — they’re not going anywhere. They merely had a temporary change of identity.

The town was ready for its close-up as the police cordoned off downtown for periods of the day so a film crew could shoot scenes for “Castle Rock,” an upcoming online series inspired by the works of famed horror writer Stephen King. Most pedestrian traffic was still allowed.

Orange resident Jamel Kovacevic, who lives on Dexter Street, stopped by to see the action.

“I’ve been trying to get them to use my swamp — I’ve got a nice little swamp down at my house,” he said. “This is cool. I think it’s good for the town.”

This series, slated for the Hulu subscription video-on-demand service, is an original suspense/thriller.

The main intersection was littered with equipment and personnel, from make-up artists and construction crew members to stunt drivers and camera operators, some of whom stood on ladders. The crew worked throughout the morning, stopping shortly after 1 p.m. Filming resumed after lunch and was scheduled for the First Universalist Church on North Main Street in the afternoon.

Traffic was detoured while the film crew was working.

Castle Rock is a fictional town in Maine (King’s home state) that the writer has used in much of his work. According to Hulu, the town has been featured in “Cujo,” “The Dark Half,” and “Needful Things,” as well as the novella “The Body” and other short stories.

At one point, a crew member was seen combing and styling the hair of actress Melanie Lynskey, who sat in the driver’s seat of a run-down Volvo waiting near the intersection on South Main Street. Lynskey, perhaps most known for playing Rose on the sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” is one of the production’s big names. André Holland, from the Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight,” has been cast to play the lead role, and Sissy Spacek, famous for her role as the title character in the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie,” and Jane Levy, who starred in the ABC comedy series “Suburgatory,” have also signed on.

Publicists for Hulu asked that no photographs or video footage be shot of the actors or the altered storefronts.

Equipped with headsets and walkie-talkies, crew members meticulously engineered every movement and camera angle for the scenes. This consisted mostly of vehicles driving through the intersection. Scenes were repeated multiple times. The business facades in the background of the shots had been artistically transferred to resemble those of a mysterious defunct mill town from yesteryear.

“Walk with the strollers,” one man instructed, prompting two women to walk up South Main Street with baby strollers while a car cruised past them. The parking lot across the street from Trail Head Outfitters & General Store was filled with background actors waiting to be tagged in. A July 18 open casting call drew nearly 1,700 people to Orange Town Hall.

Kovacevic, the local resident, said a background actor, apparently portraying a disheveled “town drunk” sitting in the intersection, reminded him of Otis Campbell, the drunken lush portrayed by actor Hal Smith on “The Andy Griffith Show” in the 1960s.

Several crew members poured into the Millers River Cafe, inside Trailhead, for food and drinks throughout Tuesday morning.

Joseph Stargensky, a freelance location manager working for Hulu, previously said Hulu has ordered 10 episodes and it takes 10 to 15 days to film one. Other scenes will be filmed at New England Studios in Devens. Kevin Kennedy, the director of community development and planning for Orange, has said film crews will be in town off and on until January 2018.

“Castle Rock” is being produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot, the production company of J.J. Abrams, creator of “Lost,” “Felicity” and the films “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Mission: Impossible.”

Crews working on “Castle Rock,” an upcoming series based on the works of Stephen King, were back in Orange this week, returning to town to shoot scenes for the series’ second episode.

Police officers helped guide traffic through the intersection of South Main and East River streets, where professionals set up shop on Thursday for scenes filmed in and around one of the two 15,000-square-foot brick buildings belonging to Gary Moise, who owns the Orange Trading Co. Filming was conducted on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Location manager Alex Berard said on Thursday he could not disclose the content of the scenes being filmed, though more filming was slated for Ball Street later in the day. He said a new episode is filmed every two weeks. Some filming is done at New England Studios in Devens. Hulu, a subscription video-on-demand service, has ordered 10 episodes of “Castle Rock,” an original suspense/thriller.

Carts of equipment and supplies packed the sidewalk across the street from the Post Office and crew members buzzed around making sure the operation was running smoothly. Equipment consisted mostly of trunks and cases, one of which was labeled “Period Eyewear.”

One of the brick buildings was rebranded as Schwall Wooden Mill Co., while the other was temporarily called the Katahdin Thread & Dye Co. A Jeep Grand Wagoneer with “Sweet Chariot Taxi” written on the sides sat parked in the intersection.

Castle Rock is a fictional town in Maine (King’s home state) that the writer has used in much of his work. According to Hulu, the town has been featured in “Cujo,” “The Dark Half,” and “Needful Things,” as well as the novella “The Body” and other short stories.

Recruited talent includes Melanie Lynskey, perhaps most known for playing Rose on the sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” André Holland, from the Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight,” Sissy Spacek, famous for her role as the title character in the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie,” and Jane Levy, who starred in the ABC comedy series “Suburgatory,” have also signed on.

Kevin Kennedy, the director of community development and planning for Orange, has said film crews will be in town off and on until January 2018.

Terry O’Quinn has to go back… to working with J.J. Abrams.

The Lost alum is reuniting with the storied ABC drama’s co-creator via a starring role in Hulu’s upcoming psychological-horror drama series Castle Rock, which counts Abrams and Stephen King as EPs.

Castle Rock (named after the fictional town in King’s native Maine that is featured prominently in a number of his works) blends “the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved stories, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland,” per producers.

O’Quinn, whose recent TV gigs include stints on now-axed dramas The Blacklist: Redemption and Secrets and Lies, will play Dale Lacy, a pillar of the Castle Rock community. The cast also includes André Holland, Scott Glenn, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy and Bill Skarsgard.

Fans of Stephen King are likely already aware that the series “Castle Rock,” based on the fictional area in Maine that is the setting for many of his stories, is being filmed in Massachusetts. The Hulu-produced series will be a psychological thriller containing characters and plot lines from several of King’s works.

According to a variety of news accounts, locations around the Commonwealth where “action” is occurring include Orange, Lancaster and the New England Studios at Devens. However, additional footage is being shot right here in Tewksbury.

The Public Health Museum in Tewksbury on the campus of the Tewksbury State Hospital on East Street will be a backdrop for several scenes in the show. A representative of the museum stated that information about the production schedule was not available, but the museum website states that the building closed on Sept. 7th and won’t reopen until Sept. 20.

The museum is the old Administration Building on the campus and houses an impressive collection of public health displays and highlights the role Massachusetts played in developing cures for several illnesses early last century including polio and smallpox. The building enjoys a reputation as a “creepy” place, though its architecture is by the renowned Richard Morris and dates to 1894.

The building has spectacular woodwork and precious Works Project Administration murals by Maurice Compris, Samuel F. Hershey, and W. Lester Stevens. Other parts of the state hospital and grounds are purported to be “haunted” and perhaps suitable for King’s thriller series.

The State Hospital has been in operation in Tewksbury since 1852, evolving from an almshouse and infirmary, to its current mission providing mental health and critical care support for adults in the Commonwealth as well as outpatient support for numerous state agencies.

According to the Massachusetts Film Office, Tewksbury has been the location for a host of film and television productions, including the series Katie Fforde and Jim Wahlberg’s short film “If Only,” along with the recent “Manchester by the Sea.”

Communication from Perry Seaman, Public Relations for Hulu, stated that interviews about the show are not being granted at this time, but a teaser trailer is up on YouTube by Bad Robot productions. So far, actors cast for the show include Bill Skarsgård, Sissy Spacek, André Holland, Jane Levy and Melanie Lynskey.

Each episode will feature a different story so keep your eyes open in town for some noted notables wandering around. The series is set to air in 2018 on Hulu.

http://www.recorder.com/Castle-Rock-to-film-in-Orange-cemetery-12768069

It may have been inevitable that the production crew shooting a Stephen King-inspired online series would want to film in a cemetery.

And that’s exactly what will happen one day next week, when those involved in “Castle Rock” set up shop in Central Cemetery to shoot a funeral scene. The Orange Cemetery Commission met with “Castle Rock” assistant location manager Peter Gonzalez near the cemetery’s Civil War monument on Thursday and voted unanimously to grant permission.

Hulu, a subscription video-on-demand service, has ordered 10 episodes of “Castle Rock,” an original suspense/thriller. Castle Rock is a fictional town in Maine, King’s home state, that the writer has used in much of his work. According to Hulu, the town has been featured in “Cujo,” “The Dark Half,” and “Needful Things,” as well as the novella “The Body” and other short stories. Some filming takes place in Orange and the rest is done at New England Studios in Devens. A teaser for the series can be viewed online at: hulu.tv/2rBi7hF.

“Castle Rock” crews started working in town around the beginning of August and are expected to visit periodically until January 2018. Some filming was conducted near the downtown intersection on Thursday.

The production company will pay for a town employee familiar with cemetery maintenance and terrain to be present for the filming. Gonzalez said loss-of-production compensation can probably be arranged. He said a $1,000 filming fee will also be paid. Interim Public Works Superintendent Joshua Knechtel said there are no funerals planned for Central Cemetery in the near future.

Gonzalez also said the names of tombstones will not be seen by the series’ viewers.

“We’re going to respect everybody’s privacy,” he said. “We’re going to be respectful as possible. This is a cemetery and we don’t plan to do anything that’s going to dishonor anybody in any way, shape or form.”

Cemetery Commissioner James Cornwell said he also belongs to the Trustees of Soldiers Memorial, which got a grant to repair the Civil War monument, and requested the production company make a donation if the monument is used in the filming. Gonzalez said he can probably make that happen.

https://www.bleedingcool.com/2017/10/08/castle-rock-gets-season-2-reboot/

The TV show life cycle of Hulu’s Castle Rock is moving at an alarmingly accelerated pace. The show’s first season hasn’t even aired yet, and it’s already getting a reboot for Season 2.

At the New York Comic Con pre-panel press Q&A for the psychological thriller, drawing characters and themes from many classic works of Stephen King, producers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason revealed that Castle Rock Season 2 will have a new storyline and a new lead cast.

It seems like the show might be heading toward an anthology format, and the wording seems to imply that some regulars might stick around on the cast — probably the ones who get paid the least. The first season is expected to start streaming on Hulu in 2018.

Ana Lily Amirpour is one of the most fascinating new directors working today. Her feature film debut A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night was tagged as “The first Iranian vampire Western” and received universal acclaim in 2014. Just two years later she followed that up with The Bad Batch, a cannibal Western featuring Keanu Reeves, Jim Carrey and Jason Momoa. She recently finished shooting an upcoming episode of Legion.

Flickering Myth spoke to Amirpour at the Sitges Film Festival and asked her what it was like working on Legion and if she would do another TV show, to which she replied, “I am directing an episode of Castle Rock, and that’s because I’m a huge Stephen King fan and J.J. Abrams is producing it, and André Holland is the lead and it’s an awesome group of people, so I’m opened to do things like that.”

Amirpour was tight-lipped about giving details of the show. The full interview will be up shortly, but in the meantime, check out the NYCC trailer for the 2018 show right here.

Castle Rock is set in King’s fictional town, and is described as a psychological horror series which ““combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.” It is slated to premiere in 2018.

http://www.telegram.com/news/20171122/castle-rock-comes-to-worcester

On Tuesday, Pennywise the Dancing Clown made his way to Downtown Worcester when the Heart of the Commonwealth was momentarily transformed into Stephen King’s fictitious and creepy town of “Castle Rock.”

Bill Skarsgård, best known as the evil, sewer-dwelling child predator in the Hollywood blockbuster “It,” addressed four corporate suits around a boardroom table set up in the lobby of the Mercantile Building, 100 Front St., for a scene being filmed for the original Hulu series “Castle Rock,” due out next year.

Minus the white greasepaint and menacing sharp teeth, the tall and lanky Swedish actor let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, when he removed a feline from his leather tote, and the tabby, enticed by a laser pointer, proceeded to walk across the table.

And that appeared to be the only major scene filmed inside the downtown office tower.

For filming, crews arrived at 7 a.m. and left by 11:15 p.m. The main lobby was closed and the use of the first-floor elevators shut down for 16 hours.

Skarsgård, who is on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) as playing a “Shawshank Prisoner” in the streaming series, arrived around 5 p.m.

Set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock, from Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television, is named after the fictional town in King’s native Maine that first appeared in King’s 1979 novel “The Dead Zone” and is referenced in “Cujo,” “The Stand,” “It,” “Creepshow,” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” The town reappeared in his 2013 novel “Doctor Sleep” and 2014′s “Revival.”

This is not the first time “Castle Rock” has filmed in the area. In August, crews shot scenes at Vernon Hill School on Providence Street and at an old Victorian house in Lancaster. In addition, a heavy amount of filming has been reportedly done in Orange, which appears to be doubling for downtown Castle Rock.

Early reports had Terry O’Quinn (John Locke from “Lost”) being a part of the filming at the Mercantile Center, but he didn’t appear in the boardroom scene nor was he spotted on the premises.

Also in the cast is Sissy Spacek, whose major breakthrough came in Brian De Palma’s 1976 horror film “Carrie,” based on King’s first novel, for which she earned her first of six Oscar nominations.

Specek won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1980′s “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

The setting of an upcoming online series partially filmed in Orange has taken a modern twist, as previous vintage-looking signs adorning local “businesses” featured on the show have been replaced by more contemporary ones.

Facades that were once made to look old-fashioned for “Castle Rock,” a series inspired by the works of horror writer Stephen King, were jazzed up with vibrant colors on Tuesday and the fake storefronts depicted businesses specializing in sushi, yoga and other commodities that might appeal to consumers in the 21st century.

A portion of South Main Street was cordoned off by Orange Police, though wooden barricades with “CASTLE ROCK POLICE” written on them were used to block the roadway.

A storefront that once had a sign for a fake video store sported one for “Castle Cuppa,” a fictional tea and coffee shop. Another fake sign, used in previous filming advertising a hair salon or barber shop, was still hanging and reads “A Thousand Cuts.” This appears to be a reference to an old method of torture and execution, and serves as a subtle nod to the sadistic and eerie themes of King’s work.

Castle Rock is a fictional town in Maine (King’s home state) that the author has used in much of his work. Hulu, a subscription video-on-demand service, ordered 10 episodes of the original suspense/thriller series. It is being produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot, the production company of J.J. Abrams, creator of “Lost” and “Felicity” and director of the films “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Mission: Impossible III.”

According to Hulu, the fictional town has been featured in “Cujo,” “The Dark Half,” and “Needful Things,” as well as the novella “The Body” and other short stories. Representatives from Hulu did not reply to emails requesting comment on Tuesday’s filming.

Orange landmarks, like the Quabbin Harvest food co-op at 12 North Main St., are visible in the trailer, which can be seen online at bit.ly/2y5Lptp.

The cast includes Melanie Lynskey, perhaps best known for playing Rose on the sitcom “Two and a Half Men,” André Holland, from the Academy Award-winning film “Moonlight,” Sissy Spacek, famous for her role as the title character in the 1976 film adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie,” and Jane Levy, who starred in the ABC comedy series “Suburgatory.” Bill Skarsgård, who portrays Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 2017 film adaptation of “It,” based on King’s novel of the same name, has also signed on.

http://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2018/03/another-it-star-joins-stephen-king-hulu-series-castle-rock-chosen-jacobs

A second It star has signed on for Stephen King and J.J. Abrams' upcoming series Castle Rock.

Chosen Jacobs will play Wendell Deaver in the new Hulu series, Deadline announced Thursday. Jacobs joins fellow It star Bill Skarsgård and fellow King universe dweller Sissy Spacek, who previously starred in Brian De Palma's classic 1976 adaptation of Carrie. The series takes its name from the made-up town of Castle Rock, Maine. The hamlet is mentioned in a variety of King novels and short stories.

King and Abrams announced the series with a footage-free teaser trailer in February of last year. The teaser, embedded below, referenced a variety of instantly recognizable King works. Castle Rock was crafted "from the world of Stephen King" and counts Abrams as an executive producer. Abrams' Bad Robot is also involved.

A year later, Hulu gave the series a full-blown Super Bowl spot, complete with satisfyingly King-esque footage.

Castle Rock premieres this summer.

With It, which saw Jacobs portray Mike Hanlon, director Andy Muschietti helped establish 2017 as the biggest year for the horror genre ever. It, with its $327 million domestic gross and critical acclaim, was joined by the $176 million haul of Jordan Peele's even more critically acclaimed (and Oscar-nominated) Get Out.

Thankfully, we don't have to wait much longer for It: Chapter Two. Muschietti is back in the director's chair, this time focusing on Pennywise's return 27 years after the events of the first film. The sequel arrives Sept. 6, 2019.

Castle Rock, Hulu's new anthology series set in the Stephen King universe, was the brainchild of showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason nearly a decade ago. But the frequent collaborators would never have gone forward with the show without the blessing from the horror master himself.

"Stephen was sort of for us like Charlie in Charlie's Angels," Shaw said during a panel for the series at the 2018 ATX Television Festival on Friday afternoon. Though King wasn't involved in the day-to-day matters of the show, "it was more like the crucial figure who loomed large from afar."

The pair was interested in creating a show based around a town that has "been visited by more than its share of nightmares," Shaw said. Added Thomason, "what is a town like Castle Rock like now? ... I think we were excited about coming back to this town that haunted our childhood dreams and what it would be like in the modern era."

The audience at the Austin panel was the first to see a four-minute clip from the series, which was narrated by Terry O'Quinn, before Shaw and Thomason vaguely discussed the series in a Q&A panel.

Much of the plot of the first season has been kept under wraps, and Thomason and Shaw said the series followed the top-secret protocol that most Bad Robot productions adhere to (J.J. Abrams is also an EP). But they did tell their stars whatever they wanted to know.

"There are certainly some actors who want to know everything from the beginning and there are some who don't want to know more than what their characters know," Thomason said. Lost veteran O'Quinn was happy not knowing anything. While shooting on the first day of filming, he told producers he didn't need to know much about what would happen to his character. "You work long enough on a J.J. Abrams show and you learn to work on a need-to-know basis," he told them.

They also discussed the casting of the series — which hinged deeply on Andre Holland and his character.

"One of the challenges of a genre show is you end up with characters who understand at some level that they're in a genre story," Thomason said. He and Shaw wanted "to find actors who really brought you into a world and made it feel really true and human and natural even as strange occurrences started happening around them."

Some of those actors include King vets Sissy Spacek and Bill Skarsgard — who had finished filming It and was tentative to sign on for another Stephen King-set series — and Melanie Lynskey, whose character's sister was cast in part thanks to Twitter. After Lynskey's casting was announced, fellow actor Allison Tolman reached out to her on Twitter to congratulate her, joking that she'd love to play her sister.

"But the weird thing is we knew her character had a sister," Thomason said, and he and Shaw knew immediately that she'd be the perfect person to cast in the role.

Another challenge for Shaw and Thomason was figuring out just how many Stephen King easter eggs to include in the series. "The impulse was to try to write a show that can be fun and pleasurable for somebody who has no experience reading Stephen King but also to satiate people who want to nerd out," said Shaw. "There's definitely some PhD-level deep cut [references]."

Said Thomason, "we've seen things that are so packed full with easter eggs that it becomes kind of dizzying. ...It was important to us [that the references] all had meaning."

As for a second season, Shaw and Thomason said they don't necessarily intend to follow the same characters — the new story could be set in the past or the future and follow an entirely different group of characters.

"You feel when Stephen King writes about these small towns is that there's a story behind every shuttered window...that the town is a little advent calendar of stories and disasters," said Shaw.

Added Thomason, "we like the idea of actually being able to come across characters and catch back up with what they're doing at unexpected times."

Castle Rock premieres July 25 on Hulu.

Castle Rock doesn’t premiere on Hulu until July 25, but San Diego Comic-Con attendees will get a lot more than a sneak peek at the psychological-horror drama. The entire opening episode of the J.J. Abrams-produced series based on Stephen King’s stories will be played for fans at the confab next month, I’ve learned.

Additionally, the home of The Handmaid’s Tale is planning a big Rock presence offscreen at SDCC.

Abrams is working on the next Star Wars movie over in the U.K., so he won’t be in Ballroom 20, but a Castle Rock panel with stars Sissy Spacek, Bill Skarsgard, Melanie Lynskey and more will be there. Although it is not 100% yet that Andre Holland will be there, that panel is where the special screening is set to take place for fans too. With all that, King himself will not be in the house in any form or fashion as of right now. Yet, there is a chance that SDCC vet Abrams might show his face via video, but that is still under discussion and a matter of scheduling, I hear.

Contacted by Deadline, Hulu had no comment on what Castle Rock has up its sleeve for Comic-Con.

However, sources say that outside the confines of the San Diego Convention Center, Castle Rock also is setting up quite the large shop. Over near the Hard Rock Café Hotel, the Sam Shaw- and Dustin Thomason-developed project will have a huge immersive “experience” for fans and the curious. While the likes of Amazon and AMC’s The Walking Dead have had similar venues in years past, the streamer aims to make this one of the biggest and baddest, in the best way.

The intention and design will encompass not just Castle Rock itself but swaths of the legacy of the iconic King too.

So be afraid, very afraid.

San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 19-22.

So far nothing has really interested me... it kind of reminds me of Haven in that it seems to include bit of namedropping and the SK brand recognition but little else.

I remember the initial trailer which was teasing everyone from Pennywise to Cujo to Annie Wilkes and so far the only SK character to show up is Alan Pangborn...

There are plenty of references to events from King canon. One character lives in Frank Dodd's old house, and another goes through clippings that mention various incidents from Castle Rock's past. I've seen one other King character, although it's true that most of them are new -- it's 2018, after all. A lot of the first season centers around something that happens at Shawshank Prison. I'm four episodes in and I can't wait until I can see more of it. It's much better than Haven in many ways. It's one complete story told over 10 episodes, not a new story each episode.

Yes, that's a good analogy. I was going to say American Horror Story, but Fargo is more apropos since the cast will be different from season to season, as I understand it.

https://meaww.com/hulu-reveals-episodic-details-upcoming-psychological-horror-web-series-castle-rock

Streaming giant Hulu has revealed the episodic details for its upcoming psychological horror web television series 'Castle Rock,' which will be based on the stories of acclaimed supernatural fiction author Stephen King and intertwine characters and themes from the fictional town of Castle Rock — a significant part of King's fictional Maine topography and a setting for many of his novels, novellas, and short stories since its first appearance in his 1979 novel 'The Dead Zone.'

According to an official description by Hulu, the show is 'an original story that combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland,' with details for four of the episodes revealed by the network so far.

The pilot, titled 'Severance,' has been directed by Michael Uppendahl, known for his work on AMC's 'Mad Men,' FX's horror anthology 'American Horror Story,' and Marvel's 'Legion,' and written by Sam Shaw & Dustin Thomason.

André Holland (Moonlight, American Horror Story: Roanoke) portrays the protagonist, Henry Deaver, a death-row attorney who hasn't returned to his hometown since the townspeople turned on him after an accident — of which he has no memory — killed his father and left him the sole suspect. Set to premiere on July 25, a one-line explanation for the episode reads, "An anonymous phone call lures death-row attorney Henry Deaver back to his hometown of Castle Rock, Maine."

Episode 2, titled 'Habeas Corpus,' and Episode 3, 'Local Color,' will also be premiering on July 25 as well, though it is unclear who will be directing/writing the episodes. A description for the former states that "Henry gets a new client at Shawshank Prison," with the latter reading: "The past catches up with Molly Strand." Melanie Lynskey (Sweet Home Alabama, I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore) has been cast as Strand, the owner of a real-estate business in Castle Rock.

According to plot for episode 4, 'The Box,' "Henry prepares for his day in court; a coffin arrives in Castle Rock," and will air on the streaming platform on August 1.

Besides Holland and Lynskey, 'Castle Rock' will also feature Scott Glenn as Alan Pangborn, the world-weary former sheriff of Castle Rock, now retired, Sissy Spacek as Ruth Deaver, Henry's adoptive mother, who struggles with dementia, Terry O'Quinn as Dale Lacy, the warden of Shawshank State Penitentiary, and Jane Levy as Jackie. Chosen Jacobs, Allison Tolman, and Noel Fisher will appear in the recurring roles.

The series will have its world premiere during the show's panel at the San Diego Comic-Con on June 19, with cast members such as Sissy Spacek, Bill Skarsgard, and Melanie Lynskey all set to be in attendance.

Bill. You can come to my house and watch. I'm sure the price of 10 plane tickets to Indiana are worth it. Just land in Muncie Indiana, head east to Parker City. Roll down your window to listen for the sound of bleating sheep. Turn North at the "Penis Tree" and keep your window down. When you reach the condemned house (it's not my hose...yet...I'm savin' up for it,) turn left at the Big Mouth Billy Bass modified into a mailbox, wait until you smell my special Spam and Ramen noodle surprise cooking and turn into the driveway (watch out for the pit bull and the kid's bicycles. On the sidewalk, be careful of all the parts of my dirt bike)

Great review:

https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/07/castle-rock-stephen-king-review/

Everybody wants Stephen King. Over the past year, Maine’s best-selling author has been the hottest commodity for Hollywood as more and more studios pick up on the idea that this is a guy with a wealth of original content and sterling IP to boot. Blame it on the overnight success of Netflix’s Stranger Things or the stacks of cash Warner Bros. received for last year’s smash, It, but King hasn’t been this popular since the ’80s, and that’s not a bad thing. At a time when sequels, reboots, and comics reign supreme, it’s a relief to see old-fashioned stories being told again, even when they’re new adaptations of already-adapted works, such as next year’s facelifts for Pet Sematary and Firestarter.

Nothing, however, has come close to Castle Rock. Hulu’s new series is the most exciting use of King’s work since the Golden Age of Frank Darabont (see: 1994’s The Shawshank Redemption; 1998’s The Green Mile), back when King’s prestigious side still felt alien. It’s also the most inventive: Longtime fan J.J. Abrams, who once bid on the rights to The Dark Tower series for a cheeky $19 bucks, has once more turned a new page on prized source material. This isn’t some retelling, reboot, or remake — hell, it’s not even really a sequel, per se — it’s an expansion, an experiment in storytelling, a reaction to Hollywood’s incessant demands of familiar narratives. Consider this an antidote.

Without spoiling too much, the story centers around Henry Deaver (Andre Holland), a death-row attorney who returns to his hometown of Castle Rock when he’s curiously called upon by a strange inmate who’s been found hiding at Shawshank State Prison. Of course, that’s just the tip of the Rock; the story is far more complicated, involving over a dozen characters, most of whom are new, and that’s the intrigue of this series. Showrunners Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason have strung together a sprawling story that’s right in line with King’s ensemble epics such as ‘Salem’s Lot, Needful Things, or the rather recent Under the Dome. This is dense, complex, and incredibly patient television.

It’s also remarkably faithful. When it was first announced back in early 2017, Bad Robot teased the series with an animated clip that roamed all across a map of Maine, highlighting iconic titles, characters, and places. At the time, it was anyone’s guess what to expect, which is exactly what Abrams always wants, and that mystery persists even four episodes in. Similar to Westworld, Game of Thrones, or Lost before it, Castle Rock relishes the little details, stuff that will be inconsequential to most, but essential to die-hards. As such, most Constant Readers will likely spend hours after every episode parsing through each frame on Reddit, calling out trivia like the Dodd house or The Mellow Tiger.

These add weathered cracks to a town that is very much alive and lived in. Because unlike a number of Reddit Shows, Castle Rock stays committed to the story at hand, and every nook and cranny winds up “serving the Beam,” to borrow a phrase from King. Granted, not everything is connected, but each detail adds flavor, which is why it doesn’t take very long to get a feel for the town, another trademark of King’s that Shaw and Thomason nails with aplomb. So, by the time the two-part pilot wraps, and we’re sitting in a beat-up pickup truck with grizzled, retired Sheriff Alan Pangborn (Scott Glenn), there’s a comfort in having both a through-line in motion and a rich playground to play in.

So much can happen. Even better, you know so much will happen, and unlike Lost or previous Bad Robot productions, there’s a confidence at hand that suggests they’ve actually taken their time hammering in all the right nails. It helps that the whole thing looks so damn sharp. Mad Men director Michael Uppendahl sets the tone for the series, striking a natural balance between Darabont and David Cronenberg’s vision for King, leaning slightly on the former with the return of Shawshank and Green Mile composer Thomas Newman. If that’s not a commitment to a vision, then, well, good luck finding a better team to reproduce King. Save for grabbing Darabont, this is as legit as it comes.

That legitimacy pays dividends; it sells the drama and lands the horror. Think about 2007’s The Mist, the strongest post-2000 King adaptation, namely how Darabont mixes the prestige and horror to unnerving results. The same applies to Castle Rock, where a similar economical blend parses out King’s strengths in terror and drama to delicate measures. This is likely why they were able to rope in such an A-list cast, from Sissy Spacek to Melanie Lynskey to Terry O’Quinn, who all commit to the scenery without a single ounce of camp. So far, it hasn’t come close to being maudlin or treacly or inconsistent. Rather, there’s a raw naturalism to the performances that matches the show’s aesthetic.

To nail so many components is a marvel in itself. After all, how many times has King’s works been derailed on screen? More often than not. And yet Castle Rock not only conjures up the magic of King’s oeuvre, but expands upon it. Such a staggering feat proves successful because the series doesn’t have to be so indebted to the source material. Instead, the past acts more like a crutch, propping up the current stories to give them an edge and a sense of place. We’ve seen this recently with YouTube’s excellent Karate Kid series, Cobra Kai, another surprising approach to the sequel, and like that show, the past informs the present in ways that feel anything but regurgitated.

Looking back, it could have been so easy for Bad Robot to simply redo Needful Things as a series or any other King novel for that matter. What this does is give them more agency and plenty of room to breathe. In a sense, they’ve created a Stephen King Cinematic Universe for themselves, and seeing how it’s produced by Warner Bros., the properties can go very deep. Again, that doesn’t appear to be the focus of Castle Rock, but rather the skeleton key to tell more original stories, which is paramount in an era where brand recognition and IP is seemingly the only way to exist. That reason alone is why the series is such a valuable commodity, not only for Hulu but for all the creatives involved.

Rest assured, this isn’t exploitation. In fact, what separates Castle Rock from most Stephen King adaptations is that it actually feels like you’re reading a new novel of his. The characters are introduced and evolved similarly; the streets, alleyways, and hangouts strangely become familiar; and the line of tension keeps you wanting more. Oh, it’s a page turner, alright, and one without an ending in sight. Granted, that’s risky business in Abrams’ world, at least based on his track record, but Shaw and Thomason have instilled enough goodwill with these first chapters that we’re ready to keep binging under the covers in complete darkness with our bookmarks collecting dust on the nightstand.

Want to stay in Castle Rock? Subscribe to The Losers’ Club, our weekly Stephen King podcast, which will break down every episode this season starting with the series premiere on Wednesday, July 25th. What’s more, they’re also hosting a two-day Stephen King film festival at Chicago’s historic Music Box Theatre, all centered around the fictional small town. Screenings include Stand by Me, Needful Things, The Shawshank Redemption, Cujo, and many more. Get more information, including tickets and the complete lineup, at the theatre’s official website.

It's funny. There was another guy who I was talking with off and on for months who was working on a deal to do several things with Hulu for Castle Rock. I was all ready to schedule a visit with his production team when, at the last minute, the green light he had gotten went red and the project was canceled. Then a few days later I heard from this other company doing one component of what the first guy had planned. But, as I said, they were on a tight budget and couldn't swing a trip to interview me on camera.

Okay, I'm in the midst of this and a few observations......................

1. As an online content provider, Hulu sucks. Not only are there commercials (for $11.99 a mo/Prime is $14, no commercials and free s/h and Netflix no commercials and comparable price)
2. Kinda cool that the first few episodes are released the day of. I thought I had to wait until prime time.
3. So far, so cool & good!!!!
4. I may have to go back and re-read every fucking King book ever!!!!! lol lol5. Someone should start a thread for all the easter eggs/references.
5. Wish I had a list of all Derry/Castle Rock books. I mean I recall some of the obvious ones, Needful things, Dark Half, etc. But it would be nice to have a concordance of sorts
6. I guess the above also goes for all the characters as well!!! lol

So, I've learned. Hulu doesn't seem to stream as well as Amazon Prime & Netflix, at least for me anyway. I'm using my daughters account for Hulu, my son for Netflix and I pay for Prime. I also have the platinum Directv with MLB/NFL package. It's starting to get a little expensive even for me!!!! DTV was the absolute best until AT&T took over. Ever since then I've had nothing but issues. Going on a rant here so skip the spoiler if you're uninterested........

AT&T/DTV hasn't properly programmed their soiftware for "Buy it Early" movie purchases. I had purchased 8 films, IT being my favorite. Went to watch it in June and it wouldn't load. After 2 hrs on the phone with customer svc and a Tech visit, turns out the software for "Purchases" only authorizes playback for 6 months!!!!!! LOL Finally got a DTV employee on the phone who referred the issue to engineering. Then, I bought "A Quiet Place" and had issues with that as well. Then, I tried to rent a MI movie and the charge would not go thru for the rental. Between my cell phone and DTV I must have spent 4-5 hrs all told on the phone with customer service!!!! And I've been an AT&T customer since 1990 (My company was an authorized reseller lol) and a Directv customer since 1996!!!!

I mean I got a fair amount of credits out of the mess, but truth be told I'd really just like to have the fucking service I pay dearly and on time for each and every month!!!! Okay rant over......................LOL

I hear you Mr. Merlin. DTV rentals never work for me. They always say it's not them it's my internet. I call my internet provider and they say it's not them it's DTV. Bottom line is I stopped renting movies from DTV.

Constant Listeners, we’ve finally arrived at Castle Rock — Hulu’s Castle Rock, that is — where there’s been a mysterious discovery deep within the bowels of Shawshank State Prison. What implications will it have on the sleepy town? We’re going to find out.

Kicking off our weekly coverage is Losers Randall Colburn, McKenzie Gerber, and Michael Roffman, who spend two hours dissecting the first three episodes — “Severance”, “Habeas Corpus”, and “Local Color” — of the highly anticipated series.

Listen above and stay tuned next week for another episode recap. Or, you can head to Chicago for some more Castle Rock lore with our own Stephen King Film Festival, which touches down at the Music Box Theatre this weekend.

NPR's Fresh Air had a broadcast about the show and King:

This is FRESH AIR. I'm David Bianculli, editor of the website TV Worth Watching, sitting in for Terry Gross. This week, the Hulu streaming service premiered the first episodes of a new drama series called "Castle Rock" based on the works of Stephen King. The fictional town of Castle Rock, which recurs in several of King's stories, is the home of, among other things, Cujo the rabid dog and one of the wardens of Shawshank Prison. In this new "Castle Rock" series, that warden is played by Terry O'Quinn from the ABC series "Lost," who once again finds himself in a very mysterious, isolated and creepy environment.

It's a slow-burner for sure, but I do like it and find it intriguing. A tad creepy here and there but hoping for more creepiness very soon. The first half of the Mr. Mercedes show was also slow-burn and character development, but it's more catchy in Castle Rock. More exciting. It has a broody atmosphere and stunning imagery. And I happen to find Melanie Lynskey as Molly Strand to be the one stealing the entire thing. Just as I feel about Holly Gibney, Molly should have her own show (or book). But we're only three episodes in, and lots can change. Hopefully it will get better and better.

I didn't find it slow at all. I think they used the first 3 ep. to set up the bulk of the mysteries to be explained/revealed later. I'm all in on this one. I think you have to give it at least the first season before you can draw any conclusions. It certainly wet my appetite and I really like the SK Universe angle so far. JMHO

I like the show, but it needs to pick up speed and get going with the creepy stuff, and put slow character developments aside. The same little issue I had with the Mr. Mercedes show but that one turned very good all of a sudden. Based on the ending of episode 4, and some trailers, I'm confident CR will soon do that as well.

It's decent so far. Better than something like 'Under the Dome' at least. Although as I guessed the King connections (aside from Pangborn and Shawshank) feel mostly tangential.

A mild disappointment with episode 4 was I heard somewhere that another SK character was going to show up in this episode and people were acting like episode 4 was shocking so I was kind of hoping for some sort of 'reveal' in terms of a big character appearance like R.F. Turns out the character was the old guy who apparently is related to some minor character from 'The Body'. Meh.

One SK character I'd like to see appear is Trisha McFarland who I guess would be 28 now.

Spoilers for today’s episode

Jackie Torrance:

“I had this uncle though. He was a writer too. One winter he just flipped his lid and tried to axe murder his wife and kids in a fancy ski resort. And my folks will never talk to me about it. So I took his name… to piss them off. My real name’s Diane.”

Looks like they’re using the film over the books now.

1. Jack used a mallet. Not an axe.
2. Doctor Sleep showed that the story Wendy gave was that Jack died a hero trying to stop the boiler from exploding. Only she and Danny knew that he went crazy.

I haven't watched the most recent episode but so far I like what I am seeing (except for the performance of the woman from Two and a Half Men who kind of annoys me.) It does feel more like Lost than a horror show. But then the characters in King's works normally get hundreds of pages to develop between the acts of horror. Why do some expect non-stop horror or action?

Hulu has renewed “Castle Rock,” its drama that pays tribute to the Stephen King universe, for a second season.

From creators Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason, the anthology drama is set in Castle Rock — the ill-fated fictional Maine town featured in such King works as “The Dead Zone” and “Cujo” — and weaves together characters and themes from King’s book catalog to present an original story.

The 10-episode first season revolved around Henry Deaver (André Holland of “Moonlight”), a death-row attorney who returns to his hometown after a mysterious young man (Bill Skarsgard) is found in a cage inside a hidden area of Shawshank State Penitentiary.

The series also stars Sissy Spacek, a veteran of the King world after making her breakthrough in 1976 as the title character in the big-screen adaptation of “Carrie.”

Although Hulu does not release ratings data, the nebulous details it did share about the show’s performance included:

On the day of its premiere, “Castle Rock” became the most successful first-season Hulu Original launch in terms of consumption and reach.
The series also has among the highest view-through rates for a Hulu Original in both its first and second weeks since launch.
The second season of the drama will also be set in Castle Rock, but will feature a new narrative and cast.

Yeah, Spacek was great.

As far as, Pangborn goes do we really know for sure that he is dead? I mean I want to re-watch the episode, but it was all about time travel as well as what was/is going on in her head. I haven't quite figured out how it all fits with the "God's Voice" thing we learned in the last episode yet. like I said I need to go back and re-watch the last two.

Having said all that I'd welcome anyone's theories and such on the storyline so far. The only thing I feel relatively certain about is that "pennywise" (as I refer to him) is not the Devil so much as a time traveler of sorts or some one lost in the stream of time.

This is the episode I called the Sissy Spacek emmy performance when I first saw it. I love the way they re-integrated things we'd seen in previous shows to let us know what was actually going on in her head at the time. And, yeah, AP is toast., But I'm still not sure what's going on with the Kid. At times he seems to be channeling her late husband, but I still think there's more going on than that.

Something really bugs me in that last episod. And it's none of what you guys will probably think.

SPOILER

By the end, when Henry plays chess with his son Wendell... he moves his knight, as if it was a bishop. I dont know if there is a symbolism hidden within this scene, or if it's simply an error done during the shooting

NB : how fucking stupid was I? I couldnt help thinking about it since yesterday, creating some symbolism behind it while... it was the queen, not a knight!

And not anything spoilery but still
10mins in, when the new warden gets papers. There are books on the background. The red and black sort of looks like a limited edition of "Danse Macabre", but I could be wrong. That designs also looks like the Suntup limited edition of Misery... but maybe that's a "common" design for the side?

I stopped listening to these guys' podcast a while back. Too much goofing around, wasting time on random stuff, too much laughing at unfunny jokes, and some weird opinions that come out of the blue and have nothing to do with the topic of CR the show (like "John Rainbird is such an ridiculous character," "Victor Pascow is stupid," "Doctor Sleep the movie will be a sequel to Kubrick's movie," and more and more. What the heck?). Weird opinions aside, they don't strike me as fans in general (except for CR which they love so much it makes you wonder if they were involved with the production). I wonder how they got the permission to have such a podcast. When they finally focus on discussing the show, it's pretty good. But as a whole, it's a waste of time. Others out there do it much, much better. So, no, won't listen to it, but judging from the little snippet above, I do agree that the post-credit sequence was...well, maybe not ridiculous, but definitely unnecessary...unless it's a kind of teaser for the second season.

Although I liked this show, I'm also disappointed. They didn't wrap it up the way they should...but I assume a re-watch or more will make things clearer. I loved the performances and the mystery. I hope a second season will be a more focused story, and spending less time on characters that don't really go anywhere, and filler that is just that...filler. I love shows that are weird and doesn't serve everything on a platter, but just don't overdo it. And yup, Spacek should be nominated for her work in "The Queen." That episode alone, although confusing at times, was worth it all. On to better things (in my opinion): the second season of Mr. Mercedes.

I agree with you. I haven't listened to the Castle Rock podcasts, because the show bored me enough to not want to spend more time on related things, but also in their book episode they tend to go off on in-joke tangents that are unfunny to me as a listener, or spend too much time discussing unrelated pop culture like their favorite indy bands. Things that should be edited out, because they make the podcast long and hard to listen to.

But yeah, this show bored me... I don't mind slow-burners, but this went nowhere and characters took forever to develop if they did at all. Just like with Under The Dome, I'm not gonna stick around for season 2.

While definitely not "great," Castle Rock is still better than just about any other Stephen King-based TV show I have watched. That isn't a high standard unfortunately.

I was disappointed in the finale but there were episodes that were pretty damn good, mainly The Queen. My guess as to why they ended like they did is because they wanted to keep the cause of the evil in town. That way they have something to partly explain the crazy things that will happen in future seasons.

I will give the next season a try. I can't say the same of The Mist.

The show didn't have a horror genre feel. The show was very ant-climactic. To put it another way. Nothing really happens, the viewers didn't get a conclusion of the story. Without giving anything away, it was a giant circle from the beginning to the end. Cage to cage so to speak. Meh?! This was all we get? I was very disappointed with this and I feel season 2 will be 20 episodes.....of nothing.

I was thinking about Fargo and I think that's a show that really feels like something the Coens would do. I think an approach like that would be great for a Stephen King show. But it feels more like J. J. Abrams's than King's. You could change the names of the characters and if you marketed it as something else I don't think anyone would say "Hey this reminds me of Stephen King".

I think the conversation between Molly and Ruth on the bridge in the finale is very Kingy in the sense that Ruth is aware that she's done this journey before and all she wants is to go back and try it again to fix the things she got wrong this time..

So here's Jackie Torrance in a nutshell:

She named herself after her uncle Jack because her family didn't want to talk about him. Jack tried to kill his family with an axe. She talks about going to the Overlook to write her book.

According to what King actually wrote in The Shining and later Doctor Sleep:

1. Jack never used an axe. He used a mallet.
2. The Overlook Hotel blew up. It is never rebuilt.
3. The official story that Wendy used was that Jack heroically died trying to prevent the boiler from malfunctioning.

So in other words everything Jackie does is a direct contradiction of King's story.

I get that this is basically nerd nitpicking but given that the show makes such a big deal about taking place in Stephen King's universe for them to basically jettison what he wrote and use Kubrick's version in its continuity really frustrated me and prevented me from viewing it as being part of King's canon. (And yeah I know they can just handwave it as "Different levels of the Dark Tower" or something.)

https://comicbook.com/horror/2019/01/10/castle-rock-season-2-production-hulu-stephen-king/

One of the more ambitious Stephen King projects to debut last year was Castle Rock, which took place in the fictional Maine town created by the author. The success of the series resulted in the confirmation of Season Two, which will reportedly head into production in March.

Production Weekly reports on the series' production, which will return to Central Massachusetts to film the new episodes for Hulu.

A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rockhas figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT, and Needful Things, as well as novella "The Body" and numerous short stories such as "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.

The freedom of setting the series in the King locale without actually adapting one storyline means each season can be its own self-contained mystery, as co-creator Dustin Thomason previously detailed.

"Each season is going to be its own self-contained story: beginning, middle, and end," Thomason previously shared with The Hollywood Reporter. "But I think that just as the books do, we want to surprise viewers with the ways in which the stories intersect. Just as the places the characters pop up in very unexpected ways throughout the books, that's the kind of anthology that we would like to tell."

He continued, "One of the things about the King universe or multiverse is that some very strange things can happen when it comes to the ways that the stories unfold, and hopefully there'll be surprises along the way in terms of how the anthology works in that way. It's pretty delicious that Kathy Bates played both Dolores Claiborne and Annie Wilkes when you really think about that question in the movie adaptations. But I think that there's something for us about being faithful to the way that Steve does it in the books, that almost feels like the anthology format has already been laid out for us."

The credits of Season One's finale included a tease about The Shining, one of King's most iconic works, though it's unclear if this new season will have any connection to that story.

Yes, MM is an AT&T production and was very good IMHO. If you can, watch it!!!!

Now, Castle Rock. I had very high expectations for this and looked forward to its release. I had my daughter order Hulu so I could watch it (we trade passwords) and well, I wasn't impressed. I mean it wasn't bad, but then again it wasn't good either. Maybe ny expectations were too high IDK, but I expected more. I also thought that they would delve more into Mid-World (I'm sure some will say they did) but I didn't make that jump from the plot. I also expected a little more cross reference/easter eggs in the episodes. What references they gave were a bit more hidden then I would have expected and did not really intertwine with the plot IMHO. As of now I told my daughter to discontinue Hulu, but I may give it another try. We'll see.

I guess bottom line I just expected more from this series. Of course that's just MHO.

Yeah I kept on waiting for some big reveal that never happened. Like someone turns out to be an incarnation of R.F. for example.

It didn't even *feel* like a Stephen King story the way a show like Fargo feels like a Coen Bros. movie each season.

Yeah the Sissy Spacek episode was the best IMO. The only moments where I really felt like 'geeking out' as a King fan were seeing her and Bill Skarsgard. Felt like a mini-crossover when she had her scenes together with him, like seeing Pennywise and Carrie face off.

Speaking of Skarsgard, this really sold him as a great actor to me. I actually thought he was scarier here than he was in 'It'.

According to sources close to Revenge of The Fans, Castle Rock will feature a special appearance by none other than the star of Shawshank Redemption, Tim Robbins.

As of now, the details and scope of his role are undisclosed, but simply knowing they’ve secured his services for Season 2 of Castle Rock should be enough to make fans of Castle Rock, of Shawshank Redemption, and of Stephen King quite happy.

‘Castle Rock’: Lizzy Caplan, Tim Robbins, Garrett Hedlund & Elsie Fisher Among 7 Cast In Season 2 Of Hulu Series (https://deadline.com/2019/03/castle-rock-lizzy-caplan-tim-robbins-garrett-hedlund-elsie-fisher-season-2-cast-hulu-series-jj-abrams-stephen-king-1202578605/)

Masters of Sex alumna Lizzy Caplan, Tim Robbins (Here and Now), Garrett Hedlund (Mosaic) and Eighth Grade star Elsie Fisher are set to lead the Season 2 cast of Hulu’s psychological horror series Castle Rock, from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King. Also set as series regulars are Yusra Warsama (Assassin’s Creed: Origins), Barkhad Abdi (Blade Runner 2049) and Matthew Alan (13 Reasons Why).

In Season 2, a feud between warring clans comes to a boil when budding psychopath Annie Wilkes (Caplan), Stephen King’s nurse from hell, gets waylaid in Castle Rock.

Caplan’s Annie Wilkes is a nurse and superfan battling to overcome mental health issues.

Robbins is Reginald “Pop” Merrill. The Patriarch of Stephen King’s iconic crime family, Pop is dying of cancer and at a reckoning with his family.

Hedlund plays John “Ace” Merril. Castle Rock’s legendary bully, Ace is taking over his uncle Pop’s businesses and threatening a fragile peace with nearby Jerusalem’s Lot.

Fisher is Joy. Annie’s home-schooled teenage daughter, Joy is starting to have questions about her mother’s sanity.

Warsam is Dr. Nadia Omar. The Harvard-trained Somali medical director of a rural hospital in Jerusalem’s Lot, Dr. Omar’s rational and scientific mind will be put to the test.

Abdi will portray Abdi Omar. The tough, older brother of Nadia, Abdi leads the charge to build a Somali community center that will deepen the roots of his people in Maine.

Alan plays Chris Merrill. Pop’s nephew and Ace’s brother, Chris struggles to keep peace between the Merrills and the Somali community.

Sam Shaw & Dustin Thomason developed the project for television and serve as executive producers along with J.J. Abrams, Ben Stephenson, Dustin Thomason, Vince Calandra, Sam Shaw, Stephen King and Liz Glotzer. Castle Rock hails from Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Caplan starred as human sexuality research pioneer Virginia Johnson in Masters Of Sex, which ran on Showtime for four seasons. The role earned her an Emmy nomination. She’ll soon be seen opposite Octavia Spencer in Apple’s upcoming drama series Are You Sleeping? She is repped by WME, Rise Management and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

Robbins is coming off a starring role in HBO’s Alan Ball series Here and Now. He’s next set to star on the big screen alongside Anne Hathaway and Mark Ruffalo in Todd Haynes’ untitled drama about the DuPont pollution scandal.

Alan is best known for his recurring role on Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why. He can next be seen on HBO’s upcoming Lovecraft Country and recurring on Season 3 of FX’s Snowfall. Alan is repped by AKA Talent and Main Title.

Hedlund is coming out in Triple Frontier and Dirt Music. He is repped by Brillstein, WME and Sloane Offer.

That's what I actually find interesting about it. We've all read the books and seen the movies. I'm up for a different take on things. Otherwise, it's just re-fried.

Was able to watch all episodes this past week and, for the most part, found it to be an intriguing and compelling series. The acting was top notch, the cinematography was superb and the mood was reminiscent of the oppresive atmosphere SK weaved throughout 'Salem's Lot. Based upon what I saw I would relish a 4-5 episode J.J. Abrams treatment of 'SL.

Just finished Castle Rock. I enjoyed it overall, but I think I was expecting something a little more plot-centric. I enjoyed the characters and thought they were developed well, but it seemed like not enough happened overall. I liked what they did with Alan Pangborn (was sad to see him go, but they could still do a season in the past and have him appear), Shawshank, and the overall King-y tone to the show. Wasn't a fan of some of the minor characters that, while I loved, didn't seem to go anywhere. Also wish there was more of a concrete answer to the "is he or isn't he?" in the final episode. I'm all for open-ended questions and half-answers, but I felt like this one needed an answer (and wouldn't have taken away anything from the show).

Overall, good, fun show. Thought the episode count was just right but the storytelling didn't really seem to have a sense or urgency. I'll be checking out Season 2, though.

This article (https://www.inverse.com/article/47354-castle-rock-ending-dark-tower-stephen-king-canon)was a fun read. I remember reading another one released just before this where the writers were being coy about not knowing what a thinny was despite having a thinny be central to the plot. I'm hopeful the second season will have a reference to the tower somewhere.

I am interested in seeing how the Doctor Sleep film justifies the discontinuity between the book and the film, since it promises to do this. The director of the film, Mike Flanagan, also directed Gerald's Game for netflix. He added a Dark Tower reference to the story that's just in the film by having Gerald tell Jessie as she laments dying alone chained to the bed, "Everything dies. All things serve the beam." Gave me chills.

Anyway, I figure it's like Jake said, "there are other worlds than these." Any discontinuity can be easily explained this way within any of the stories, someone just has to write it.

You'll want to check out the news contained in this thread.........................

http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18059-Doctor-Sleep-movie-set-for-2019

for the answer to your query. They, I suppose for the same reasons as "Castle Rock", are utilizing the "Canon" established Kubrick's film because of its more wide spread popularity and so forth. Not that I necessarily agree with them, but I can see their point. Also, they are apparently utilizing recreated/retouched scenes from the movie in "Dr. Sleep". There are some pretty interesting recent articles referred to later in the above thread. Enjoy!!! Oh, and welcome to the forum!!!

Okay, so now when you enter 1960, 1982, 1983, and 1990 the message has changed to "Jake". 1994 gives you the message "This is not the Derry Dairy. This is Jake." The message is a man's voice. Probably Jake Epping from 11/22/63. That was also a J.J. Abrams/SK show. He was a time traveller.

On the phone?

Yes, this was all over the phone.

I started watching last night at midnight and enjoyed what I saw. The Laughing Place is mentioned in the first sentence. Looking forward to watching more tonight.

Got to watch all 3 back to back tonight. Pretty good! Going in a direction I hadnt expected. Episode 3 was pretty creepy. Everything about that episode was freaking great in fact. Biting my nails by the end.

My wife and I have watched the first 2 episodes as of last night (10/24). We're really liking it and it's making us want to rewatch the movie "Misery".

Liking it better than the previous season. I guess giving up on this being canon and treating it like Bates Motel with SK characters is the best approach to take at this point. Lizzy Caplan is a great Annie Wilkes so far.

Looking forward to watching the new episode tonight. I hope people are watching. I would hate it if Hulu canceled because of "Second Season Slump" Anyone have any ratings numbers?

Love love love it. Changing things up and playing with characters but it always feels respectful and with reverence.

looking for: The Terror S/L,
Dead Zone 1st/1st F or NF, Boy's Life S/L
