Would love to hear an argument for why February is NOT The Godfather!
January should be relatively easy to whittle down to a couple guesses. Apparently the author has passed or did not want to sign this latest book (?).
March should be cool since I am a sucker for anthologies!

My presumption is that March is the collected stories of M. R. James. Ash Tree Press did a similar massive volume, which I own, some time ago…if I’m correct, it’ll be interesting to see Suntup’s take on this master’s works.

My guess for March is Poe.

I think Poe is the correct answer here, as the blurb indicates it's an American author.

January is almost certainly 'The Magus' by John Fowles.

Ah, I didn’t catch that American reference…you’re absolutely correct, that omits James. Must be Poe.

Paul will-a make-a an offer we canotta refuse-a!

From Coppola's Godfather Notebook:

"WEDDING SCENE:
PITFALLS:
1. Clichés; Italians who-a talka lika-dis. ..."

Coincidentally, my wife and I rewatched Godfathers I and II over the weekend. 50 years on, they still hold up. They're timeless.

...the other vanished as I was entering payment info.

Funny thing...Suntup uses a third party payment thing for processing credit cards, and when I was entering payment info, this other program/app sent me a text message with a 6-digit code to confirm my identity.

The first 3 digits of this 6-digit number were: 666.

The book I was attempting to order was...The Omen.

Shit like this is why I should stop reading books like The Omen.

The sale sucked me in, and I finally made my first actual, sticking purchase with Suntup: the Artist Edition of Schindler's Ark.

[Why I phrased that as I did:
- I actually already have one Suntup production - The Auctioneer - but it was free (I won it)
- I did place an order for Imajica, but backed out (not so much a long story as a dumb one)
- I tried like hell to order two dinged books - The Omen and Imajica - but they both sold out before I could check out.]

Not a surprise but Paul let slip today that the March book is going to be the complete works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Also of note is that due to printing difficulties the amount of numbered editions will go down from 350 to 310. Although as he pointed out it shouldn't be too difficult to grab a copy once they go out on sale given how many numbereds are left open for public preorder.

All editions look fantastic (not unusual for Suntup); the covers of the numbered and lettered are quite stately, and the textures (of the paper as well) look sumptuous. The side view of the lettered shows: that is one thick 600 pages (just how I like 'em).

I would have probably snagged one anyway, but there would have gone another load on my PayPal credit card!
At the same time I am glad I don't have to worry about it!
I just browsed the SUNTUP website again and noticed the orders page now lists all one's books and merchandise in a much easier to read format. You do not have to click a link to see them, it's all open with price, date, etc., very easy to see where all your money went! All well spent in my worthless opinion.
I also clicked on the still available option and see a couple of numbered and AE editions I need to get!

Oh cool, I didn't get a chance to look at the Suntup email the other day to see who the artist was.
I did a lot of intaglio work in college and my printmaking professor ran a juried national print show annually.
I want to say that Art was selected every year that I was there. A friend of mine also went on to get her MFA in printmaking working under Art Werger at Ohio University.

$300 for one of his mezzotints is not bad at all. Just rocking the copper plate to get it to the deep black starting point of a mezzotint is a lot of work.

Fantastic in every detail...other than the almost LeRoy Neiman-ish AE dust jacket illustration which feels very disconnected from the work.

Too many great things to comment on individually, but the Masque of the Red Death illustration is sick (particularly satisfying not only because Masque is awesome, but also because submissions to Folio Society's semi-recent art competition for Masque were almost uniformly awful).

April hint: "Our second publication by this author, we cannot tell you what his name is."

No idea except that this likely is a dead male author (given that they're not signing) who has only been published once which doesn't narrow it down. (Edit: Paul also said this was a horror novel.)

May hint: "This iconic horror novel took the world by storm when it was first published in the 1970s with its claims to be based on a true story. "

Amityville Horror, most likely.

June hint: "One of the most influential horror novels of the 20th century, this book became a pop culture phenomenon. The novel spawned sequels, a cinematic masterpiece and a horror franchise, but it is this original work of literary genius that is the mother of them all."

Clearly Psycho.

I hope it's Legion or something by Matheson just because I'm looking to get Centipede's 'We Have Always Lived in the Castle' in April which is pretty expensive lol and I can avoid those.

I've never read Legion so don't know if Mahurin's art style complements the nature/vibe of the story but I think his work for Centipede's The Haunting of Hill House and dust jacket for Something Wicked This Way Comes fit perfectly for those books. I wish Jared had let him do all of the art for SWTWC.

After teetering for a bit, I dove in and bought the AE. It is on the outer edge (a bit past it, actually) of what I wanted to spend, but I think dreams of eventually landing a Suntup Exorcist to go with it (as unlikely as that is, given its current value) pushed me in.

St. Troy
04-16-2023, 09:58 AM
What do we think about when Legion (the AE, at least) is likely to ship? The main Legion page says "ESTIMATED PUBLICATION: Winter 2023/2024" (several months from now) but the AE-specific pre-order page says "ESTIMATED PUBLICATION - Spring 2023" (effectively, any day now). Perhaps the longer window is for the numbered and lettered editions (I don't know if Suntup staggers them).

ajw2910

Based on that page I would say the AE is not far from shipping (within a few weeks). I think the dates shown imply when all versions should be shipped.

My Legion (Artist Edition) has been delivered, but is not yet in my hands (delivered to a P.O. box) - can't wait to take a good look.

I just checked Suntup's site out of curiosity and was surprised to see that the Legion AE hasn't yet sold out. While I know Legion lacks The Exorcist's cache, I'd thought general Suntup collector interest would've mopped up the rest of these by now, but perhaps that's only the case with lettered and numbered editions.

CyberGhostface

I saw there was some controversy over Mahurin's signature for Legion as it's just a squiggle. I didn't get Legion but he did the same thing for Centipede's Haunting of Hill House and I didn't really take much issue with it. It is what it is, that's just his style.

St. Troy
05-12-2023, 05:29 AM
Don't book people already know that that is how some people do their signatures? It's just the way it is.

(As for signature quality: we got one J.R.R. Tolkien and we're never getting another).

I intend to hold off on this one but the introduction (from "Laura DiDio, the first local reporter to cover the story, featuring her own true account of what she and her crew experienced upon visiting the house after the Lutzes fled") and afterword ("providing a wealth of historical context by Eric Walter, the director of the documentary, My Amityville Horror") are pulling at me (and a tip of the cap, once again, to Suntup for putting together nice extras such as this).

Nice design, and that leather on the lettered edition - you could lose your car keys in there.

Glad by the choice. I think I might have listed it as a suggestion a few years ago. This was the very first horror novel I ever read (I was 10 +/- 1). I still consider it to be the scariest I read (although I was young and easier to scare). Will try to get a numbered if any available, but I always forget the day they go on sale.

I have no real guess on any of the Q3 announcements, but I think we do have two clues for the "clueless" July announcement:

1) the fact that this has a "classic" edition (as opposed to "artist") means that it will be signed by the author, and therefore the author is alive (or was until very recently);

2) the classic limitation of 500 and the numbered limitation of 250 may suggest a title more niche than tentpole (I say "may" because Paul's recent comments about limitations point to a more general Suntup outlook on this - on the other hand, the contracts driving these particular titles were settled long before Paul's most recent Facebook video, so perhaps my logic holds).

I'd noticed before that the The Amityville Horror artist edition product page stated the number of copies remaining, but that is no longer there. Is the removal of that an indicator of the count having dropped below a certain point? I believe I'll eventually order one of these but am waiting for a bit (let's just say: one must watch one's altitude when trying to stay under the radar) and it was reassuring to see that there were still over 200 available (when I last checked).

I have a 1/1 signed, but would LOVE a Suntup version - in fact, I know I ask for it every time Paul sends out a survey. I know some have said it would be a PITA to print since the last third of it has some quirks that could make printing "fun".

PLUS, it's not like Mark Z. Danielewski's signature is hard to do, and I'm sure he could sign hundreds of sheets a minute. :)

A poster elsewhere said it could be Winterset Hollow by Jonathan Edward Durham. The Amazon listing has a quote from Gabaldon on it:

"Winterset Hollow is of the most interesting books I've read in years...astonishingly powerful and multilayered! It's like you're sitting on a long by a pleasant pond, dabbling your toes, and then you see a dark shape in the water...then another...and while you're holding your breath, suddenly you realize the log you're sitting on...is...moving!"— DIANA GABALDON, NY Times bestselling author of Outlander

Although not related to Misery, the first publication ready to ship:

Just curious if they will be exclusively be binding Suntup books, or if you will take orders for other small publishers.

Several months ago, an opportunity presented itself, and I jumped at it. Through the years, we have utilized many different binderies for our books. One in particular has always impressed us in the excellence of their craftsmanship. This bindery has consistently produced a quality product that we and our customers have loved. When I learned that the bindery was shutting down, I stepped in and hired their four key bookmakers and purchased the equipment needed to assist in the binding process.

After months of planning, I am delighted to announce that we now have our own in-house bookbindery. Suntup Bindery is a dream team of bookmakers with 20-30 years of experience in their field. Some of the books this team have made for Suntup Editions over the years include the Numbered editions of Misery, The Handmaid’s Tale, Horns and Blackwater, as well as the Lettered editions of Red Dragon, The Lottery, Neuromancer, 1984 and A Scanner Darkly, just to name a few.

Yes; this is fantastic, for Paul and for all of us.

The book that I keep hoping that Paul will do is "The Man Who Fell to Earth." The old Bowie movie is flawed in some ways but an iconic portrayal. A close second is "Under the Skin."

November is clearly Hell House. December I'm guessing is something by Ania Ahlborn or Kealan Patrick Burke. No idea for the October story.

Could October be something from Noel Coward, given the "cowardly" clue. I'm not familiar enough with Coward's work to hazard a guess as to which work.

How about the Wizard of Oz? One article online notes “Cowardly Lion is the character that most closely represents Baum in the book.”

How about the Wizard of Oz? One article online notes “Cowardly Lion is the character that most closely represents Baum in the book.”

That was also my first "cowardly" association, but Suntup's description of October's announcement as "chilling" seems to undercut that idea.

They've also said it's a short story (WoO is a short but still a novel) and if it was book like Oz it would most likely have an artist edition.

December is Ania Ahlborn

I also think it will be Ania Ahlborn in December, but do you have any reasoning behind your statement?
I think it will be Ania Ahlborn based on her output in recent years, her last two published books were both limited editions first, Suntup has published three limited editions of her works before, but since Ania Ahlborn has not published anything new in quite some time ( her last two books were very short, Palmetto and Dark Across the Bay, from thunderstorm and Earthling publications, and If You See Her from Suntup last year, which was a previously published novel)
Ania Ahlborn is due for a new book, having it debut as a Suntup book would be great!
My guesses for the fourth quarter are :
October - either The Yellow Wallpaper or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
( Sleepy Hollow being a perfect fit for Halloween)
November is 100% Hell House
December something chilling from Ania Ahlborn

Garrell
09-25-2023, 04:19 PM
Lots of what you said but I also remember awhile back seeing something about her next book going limited. Mainly, she is due a book based on her releases.

October - either The Yellow Wallpaper or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
( Sleepy Hollow being a perfect fit for Halloween)

Sleepy Hollow could be mighty cool, although I recall the actual Washington Irving work as more jaunty and fun than chilling. If it is SH, I will wear a giant frowny face since there is no artist edition (lettered and numbered being a bit out of my range).

If I remember correctly, Paul said he would do a new release of hers sometime down the road.

St. Troy

Back to the possibility of the October one being The Legend of Sleepy Hollow: Paul says this one will have "wood engravings printed from the original blocks," suggesting something old.

What about wizard of oz - looking through articles - the movie is nothing like the book. The book is "The Original 'Wizard of Oz' Books Are Shockingly Violent Compared To The Judy Garland Classic" - there are many deaths and dismemberments in the actual book

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was actually incredibly violent, with Dorothy and friends killing nearly 100 animals and people during their quest"

And of course the dark story behind the Tin man actually becoming the Tin man and hacking off various parts of his body

Also there were older s/l WOS books - that included many wood engravings...just saying

RichardX

December is Ania Ahlborn

That seems like overkill. Her books are readable but would prefer something different.

Very cool (from a Suntup email this morning):

We were delighted to learn that our Roman Numeral edition of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl was shortlisted for the British Book Design and Production Awards 2023 in the Fine Binding and Limited Edition category. The winner of each category will be announced at the British Book Design and Production Awards gala dinner on Wednesday 24 January 2024 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

The book is bound by Shepherds Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with typographic design by Jerry Kelly, letterpress printing by Bradley Hutchinson & offset illustrations printed by Penmor Lithographers.

I’m leaning towards a Hemingway story - ‘The Short Happy Life of Francis Macombe’ could fit - though ‘The Killers’ or ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro’ are probably more widely known.

King's Ghost Story tweet also got my attention.

Given that Centipede Press's edition of Ghost Story is lined up (but not definite) for sale in February (2 months from now) and that King doesn't yet know if he's writing the introduction he refers to (he said "I hope to do an introduction"), I wonder if it's even possible that he's referring to CP - I would think their edition must be set in stone by this point (only 2 months out).

I am hoping that King's tweet refers to a special edition other than CP's, whose Ghost Story is priced ("$495 or more") beyond my budget.

If some one wants to have a %60 sale, I would be more than willing to take that deal. You really don't know how bad and stupid I feel.
That's back when I did not know about the "subscription" model and I thought around $700 was a lot at once. If I was smart, I should have bought a bronze subscription. But I did not. Now that was stupid. Boy have things
changed.
