Fair enough. Stumguy is chief asshat. But there are others who have dubbed themselves standard bearers of small press publishing. Astropi is one. The problem with identifying the posters is that I’m viewing the thread on my phone and the names don’t display clearly so I am reacting more to the posts and not considering that it’s a small number of posters.

To those on LibraryThing who are posting disparaging remarks about Paul's business model...

Suntup books are an acquired taste. If you don't like them, acquire some taste.

That made me laugh. Out loud, even. Though I agree subjectively I don’t objectively. No business can please everyone all the time. And that’s cool. It’s odd how closely tied Suntup selections are to my preferences. And how I have yet to groan when I’ve seen a book announced. But I don’t expect everyone to react the same way. Even my traitorous wife has blasphemed now and again with *gasp* criticisms. But we’re still married for now.

What annoys me is the sneering at the fans having our fun. Calling us a cult. And implying Paul is a Machiavellian figure or a cult leader or pied piper leading is all to the water. Seems unnecessary and spiteful.

I found the Q&A very enlightening. Paul gave us an inside look on how he does things and why he does them that way. Paul has the right to run HIS business the way he sees fit. Did I make mistakes in the beginning, sure. They still bother me to this day. But you know what, they were my mistakes. I don't run a business so I can't comment on that, but I am sure this is not an easy thing to do. As to pricing, I just checked all the numbered books only (since I don't buy lettered and only a few AE).
This is what I found. Now Paul admitted that when he started he was learning and maybe did not have a good way to set pricing. Even though that first book was Misery, let's take the first two out of the equation. And let's just a price of $550 as a price where people may think the books are getting expensive. Here is what I found. Paul has put out 28 books that have numbered versions. 11 were above $550 and 17 were below $550. Now I am not got at math either (trust me, I was in L.D math all through high school. ) But even I know 11 is less than 17. I mean, really, how much do we want to pay for quality. Just because we want them, do we expect Paul to just give the books away?

Maybe this is a wasted post. I don't know. If you think that, the completely disregard. I am not here to come to the rescue of Paul. He doesn't need it.
(But I have my fire suit ready, just in case).

Not a wasted post. Although I do not expect Paul to give away books I can honestly say that I have two books on my shelves that he gave me and I know many other people have books he has gifted them!
I agree. Paul has been generous to me as well in giving 1 or2 books. Plus the one I won. So I get your point and that should be all we need to know about where Paul's heart is.

If you are successful, you become a target. Suntup Editions has been amazingly successful and Paul has done an amazing job building his business and raving fans.

I'm not a fine press expert but I've collected/bought from many fine presses over the past 10-15 years. I've toured letterpress shops and taken letterpress printing classes. I can't think of any fine press publisher that's been founded during that time that has been anywhere nearly as successful as Suntup Editiions - anywhere in the world. It's the modern day equivalent of the Limited Editions Club, except the books chosen are contemporary and much more aligned with my taste. Suntup Editions numbereds at their best are on par with any publisher I'm aware of that publishes fine press in the same price range. No one communicates with their customers at this level. Objectively, it's impressive.

I dropped my number with Imajica because the value wasn't there for me on that title and I'm going to cut down on my book spending. That said the verry next title was something that I want.

Haters gonna hate. Don't let a couple randos disturb your tranquility.

Is this person for real?
I very much enjoyed The Dark Tower for the books I read in it (I-IV). I stopped at Wolves of the Calla, I got kind of turned off to it because the edition I got the font was the same as the Harry Potter books which I didn't like AT ALL.

It’s a legitimate criticism. I noticed the same thing about Wolves of the Calla when it came out, and I didn’t like the font Grant chose, either. It’s the Harry Potter font.

It didn’t cause me to stop reading, but I did notice.

... and I do realize it might have been deliberate.

I do agree that the font choice was a horrible one. And I think that book was the weakest of the series. So you can judge a book by the cover font.

That was me on that thread who said that. I guess it does sound a bit ridiculous and it's not the only reason I didn't continue reading the series... the previous book was super long and I was burnt out and just never went back for whatever reason. But I do specifically remember thinking "I really hate this font." I'm sure everyone here can appreciate book design and I feel like the font totally ruined the design continuity between the copies I purchased (The paperback ones, the covers all same artist I think, that font choice was just awful though)

I joined a few of the FB groups last month; Friends of Suntup, Friends of Cemetery Dance, Friends of SubPress; I dropped them all after less than two weeks. Seems most posts were either somebody trying to sell a book or complaining, just not my style. At least here on TDT there's more to do and fun people to do it with!

So I had my first Suntup shipment come in damaged, two covers prints. The whole shipping box had been bent in two, maybe three, side crushed in, etc. Dropped a note, sent photos, and Rebecca got me two replacements in the mail with absolutely no issues. So kudos to Paul and his crew for continued outstanding customer service and sweet products.

So if you would like a copy of Replay and don't have rights hit me up with a pm if that is the announcement!

Trying to do whatever i can to stay on the train, buddy :) The 5 book quarter has been rough on me.

If it is Beloved or Still Life with Woodpecker I will definitely keep it.

If it is Replay I want to sell because it is not a book I am familiar with or love and cant afford to spend the numbered price (to just keep it in my collection) just to stay on the train. Therefore selling Replay without rights to a buyer that just wants the book is what I would like to do. Just trying to get a jump on finding someone that might want that book (IF it ends up being that book)

In this particular case no; I had them boxed and ready to go but was asked to destroy them instead. They were pretty beat up, not worth returning as they wouldn't be resold; it wasn't like a scuff on a slipcase or a smudge on a title page.

Did anyone else pick up on the little Easter egg on the prices? It can't be pure coincidence that the numbered sells for $555, the lettered for $3,333 and the roman for $5,555.

Kudos Paul (I assume this was intentional)! Too bad you couldn't get the AE in at $111, but I'm sure that would have been impossible while maintaining the Suntup standards.

Looks like four more beautiful additions to the Suntup lineup!

Well look at that!

it WAS Replay!

Nice foresight! Were you able to sell it?

I am contemplating keeping the book because i believe the design and art is fantastic. My main reason for wanting to sell it was that I was just not familiar with the title and it is difficult for me to buy multiple Suntup numbered in one 30 day period.

The book design and art are amazing and Im really intrigued to read my first read of the novel while experiencing the full Suntup production including the translucent art pages (which are not in the AE). I may end up selling it down the road, but for now i think I am in on it.

This book is really, really good. Heartfelt, kind, sad, funny, clever...

I've read it several times and when this one ships the Suntup version will go to the top of my reading queue.

I strongly recommend anyone who hasn't read this and is considering selling it to reconsider, as Lookwhoitis has. The fact that this is one of the nicest designs (which is a hard club to break into this year) makes this a surefire keeper!

Yes, intentional. Just had some fun with that. For the AE, $111 wouldn't work, and I certainly didn't want to go out with $222 just for the sake of repeated numbers. So repeating the last two digits was the next best option.

I have to agree. I really like the fact that the numbered versions seem to have more artwork or symbols on the cover like the AE.

Question for those of you that display your editions spine out - how will you display the numbered edition of Replay?

I'm interested to see what this edition looks like with the quarter leather chemise, but from what I can see in the pictures, the chemise has no printing on it. If so, that seems to present three options.

Display it spine out, without the chemise, so the title shows.
Display it spine out with the chemise, presenting a blank spine.
Display it spine in.

I don’t make display decisions by individual Suntup edition. That lack of uniformity would drive me nuts. I’ve been displaying all of my Suntup numbered collection spine-out for a couple months but at some point I will switch them all to spine-in and leave them that way for a very long time. Most likely when I start going back to an office instead of full-time WFH.

It has been a while since I offered a contest to Dark Tower forum members only. I have some extra copies of the AE of The Auctioneer which I need to clear out. These had been held back to allow for any that may have been lost or damaged during shipment of orders. So instead of putting them back in the store for sale, I will give them away to any members here who have never won anything from Suntup.

So please comment here with “Never Won” and then send an email using the contact form on the website and provide your name and mailing address. Please do not PM.

When I post here that the contest is over then don’t email any more because that means all copies are gone.

Congrats! The Suntup AEs are really very nice books. Quality, of course, but they also often have a lot of little design features that make them a joy to read.

I’m also planning a read of The Auctioneer AE, but I have a few books in the queue before it.

It is the first book in the Kingsbridge Series - the others being a sequel, set 150 years later, entitled World Without End (2007),[2] and A Column of Fire (2017) set in Elizabethan England. A fourth novel, The Evening and the Morning (2020), a prequel set in 997 AD, was released on September 15, 2020.

Just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation and is aware of a resolution:

I used to be able to watch Suntup's live Facebook videos on a PC, laptop, and iPhone despite not having a Facebook account.

On June 2, when I tried on a laptop the Facebook link on Suntup's website took me to a Facebook "you must log in" page. I was, however, able to view the Facebook video by clicking the same link from an iPhone.

Today, I tried on a PC with the same (fail) results as on June 2 with a laptop, and now get the same (fail) result on an iPhone.

I thought maybe Facebook had made some blanket changes, but I can still see Clive Barker's Facebook page, so that doesn't appear to be it.

It's not exactly an emergency, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Just put The Wolfen and Johnny Got His Gun on hold so I can pick them up next week when I return the two I have. Kind of feels like I'm back in school!
Yea, but you don't have to write a book report unless you WANT to.

You didn’t really have to the book reports in school either.

If you're contemplating whether you or possibly your child should join the military, you might both want to read "Johnny got his Gun" 1st.
Life changing for me as young teenager (read it in high school)
Even though I did eventually serve in the military, "Johnny got his Gun" did ultimately influence which branch I enlisted into.
To me, this story is a "must read".

Not sure I would use "obscure" to describe it. It won the National Book Award. It's been adapted to the radio, television, several stage plays and a fantastic 1971 movie that Trumbo wrote the screenplay for as well. Parts of that movie appear in Metallica's video for "One" in 1988.

Besides all that, it has a fascinating political history that would make a cool documentary one day.

This Southern gothic horror novel was originally published as a series in the 1980s. It is considered to be among the author’s finest achievements. The book is available in three states: Lettered, Numbered and Artist. The Lettered edition is limited to 26 copies, the Numbered edition is limited to 350 copies, and the Artist edition is limited to 1000 copies. The Lettered and Numbered editions are signed by the author of the afterword and the artists. The Artist edition is signed by the artists.

Definitely Blackwater by Michael McDowell.

Jaws makes sense, "this thriller is the ultimate Summer beach read," and especially given that Benchley is no longer with us..." author of the introduction and the artists." Jaws is my favorite movie of all time, so this would be a must for me.

Do be aware that the book and film are considerably different, and by most reviews the book pales to the film. I finally read it myself a couple years ago, and quickly realized that Spielberg took bits of Benchley’s disappointing work to produce something truly special and wonderful and that bore only a superficial resemblance to the book. That said, I’d still pick up a AE of the book (especially if it had some interesting extras) just because it was the source work for a film that’s a cornerstone in modern horror history and so would be nice to have on the shelf.

And I agree August must be BLACKWATER, which I have nothing but glowing things to say about. I do have the Centipede edition, though, so will likely be able to skip this one.

That being said Benchley deserves credit for acknowledging the negative impact Jaws had on sharks and becoming a shark conservationist after.

All true. The book is anti-climatic for anyone who sees the film first. I was lucky I had parents that made me read it before seeing it in the theater the summer it came out. And yes, Benchley had many regrets regarding the impact of the film. Of course, I'm sure he kept on cashing the checks.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.

I own the Centipede of this as well and there is no way a Suntup version can eclipse it (for me) because it was $195. I appreciate the opportunity to be exposed to new books, or buy fancy editions of books that I don't have in my collection, but re-publishing works that other Publishers have covered recently is not for me (especially if I already own those editions).

I mean for some books, though it might be a good idea. People have asked in the FB groups for Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos which I think would be a good candidate for re-publishing a LE of. Those books are hard to find on the open market.

Blackwater just isn't a famous enough series to have multiple High quality publishers editions of it. When you Google Blackwater you have to pare through the hits of Jeremy Scahill's book and info about the Mercenary Company

I wonder if I am going to get lambasted for trying to pre-sell Blackwater A. Before it is announced and possibly B. Under cost, way early and ahead of time

You guys always amaze me at how quickly you jump on the clues. Adding my two cents...

I've never read Jaws; just assumed the book and movie followed fairly closely. If the book is somewhat disappointing, does it deserve the Suntup treatment?

I'd never heard of Blackwater, but it definitely intrigues me as I love gothic horror.

The September book is very intriguing to me. No idea what it could be, but since it deserves a Roman, 1,250 AEs, and Paul's signature, it must be something special! I'd love another King book, but I can't imagine it is without an author signature. Any guesses?

While I really like HHGTTG, the Folio Society edition is adequate for me. I am not aware of any nice editions of 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' or the subsequent 'Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul' though, and as I've gotten older I find those are actually my favorite Adams novels.

I've now convinced myself that September is definitely Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Also, I can see why the print run is being bumped to 1250 for the artist edition. A very popular work that appeals to all ages. Maybe Paul will have a golden ticket contest or something like that.

I'm still hoping for a Suntup edition of Where the Red Fern Grows. The very first novel I read as a kid.

What did everyone think of Paul's Facebook Live today?

First off, I was surprised by his T-shirt - was he trying to throw people off by wearing a Jaws shirt (seems over the top obvious), or just going with the flow since the overwhelming guess seems to be Jaws?

Second, I was very surprised when he said this book is second only to Misery in the books they've announced. I've seen the movie numerous times, but never read the book. From many of the comments I've seen, it seems like most people liked the movie better than the book. With all the other Suntup books produced, would Jaws really come in second?

Like always, it was a great broadcast. I think in this setting, it's an important book in the pantheon of important books in literature. I don't think it's a King book and I know people have speculated
(myself included) that maybe King wrote the intro. But, obviously I could be completely wrong about that. But for Paul to put it that way has me very excited :excited: for tomorrow. Plus the fact that has a Roman version, at least to me, says that it is an important book.

There are several intriguing design elements in this round: I was intrigued to see the different approach toward quarter binding mentioned in yesterday's Facebook video; it (the numbered edition) is a simple and elegant depiction of what we picture when we do the da-dum thing (without being in the least cartoonish) and the Japanese cloth Suntup uses continues to make me drool - want to touch. And who knew that fish leather (used in the lettered edition) was a thing? The Roman numeral edition looks to be a pretty singular object with all the hand dying and silver leaf - not to mention the velvet lining. Another mighty impressive batch from Suntup (unless you hail from LibraryThing).

I like all the editions, but I really like the design of the numbered. Hopefully they turn out as nice as the sample shown!

Ordered the AE, Numbered and paperweight - looks like I'm gonna need a bigger bookcase (especially after seeing the Imajica mockup yesterday)!

All I can say is, darn my toothache to heck! I was at the drugstore buying Orajel, which didn't even work!

This is the way that Suntup must follow. Nice full page illustrations (Traditional style art), bonus content and a nice design.
After a long time, I buy a suntup book. This will be sold out.

Wow, what an impressive campaign for an iconic book. Every edition is so wonderfully designed. I can't imagine the amount of work that went into just this Suntup title alone. Congrats on a knockout project, Paul!

I just got home. No artist editions, no prints, no cubes.

At least I'll get my numbered copy.

Brain, these went crazy fast. For the cube and the print, I don't even think you had time to think. The Artist went very fast. You had to jump on that with the
quickness as well. And there are 125 numbered left.

I will pay a dumb amount of money for a print, or will trade you pretty much any 2 AEs of your choice (except Misery/RB)

I would be very willing to pay for an extra cube, particularly if I can get it with a matching number.

Missed out on the cube and the print. Oh well. Maybe I’ll look when the market calms down.

Paul, I see what you meant about this being the biggest book since Misery :) In addition to being very popular it’s also the only other book (so far) with dimensions larger than 6” x 9”

Misery was 7.5 x 10.5 and Jaws is 7 x 10

I was too busy with the interview to even notice there was a paperweight involved! But that’s a relief that I didn’t have to struggle with the decision to either buy and break my “books only” rule (again!) or pass and feel the regret. I can’t regret a decision I couldn’t make. :)

One book that does well doesn’t change my thoughts on that. I do stand by that statement I made. [emoji123][emoji869][emoji109][emoji119][emoji1690]
