I've had a busy few days for some reason....

SO.... I have been wanting to post this but have not had a chance. If you recall, on one of the FB live videos I had a Rubik's Cube on the desk. The first person to notice it during the live broadcast was Patrick. So he wins an ARC of Let The Right One In. Congratulations Patrick!

Then we have someone who first mentioned it on this forum in this post (https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?20875-Suntup-Press&p=1202646&viewfull=1#post1202646), so he also gets a prize, and that was Noxus35. ARC for you too!

And finally..... the grand prize goes to the person who correctly identified the actual book from the clue. This person wins a PC copy of the Numbered edition of Let The Right One In. And the winner is CyberGhostface, who guessed correctly on this post (https://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?20875-Suntup-Press&p=1202661&viewfull=1#post1202661).

Congratulations to the winners!!

Oh, I should mention. These ARC winners will receive the rarer red variant ARC pictured here.

I love the fact that it's "rare" and it makes me wonder though how many of these ARCs were actually made. 😉

How do I see how many are left? Let’s just say I have insider info....

If those initially picked do not respond by the deadline set by Paul, it will work down to the next person(s) in the list. Paul has already determined the lottery list.

Also I assume you meant you entered but was NOT picked? Otherwise that’s a little greedy!! :)

As a little tidbit... One of the reasons why I appreciate Suntup doing LTROI is because English-language hardcovers with the proper title are scarce.

When the US publisher released the book in America they thought the title was too long and changed it to ‘Let Me In’. The only English-language hardcover with the full title was the UK edition which has since gone out of print. (You’d think with the success of the film that there’d be demand for a reprint but both publishers told me they have no plans.)

So unless you get lucky you’re looking at expensive prices to get a proper hardcover release for this book. The Suntup AGE is cheaper than the prices on Abesbooks and only slightly more expensive than what the sellers on Amazon have it at.

Offering $5000 cash for a Misery Number.... anyone?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I know Camelot books has one listed for $6000. Maybe Kim we'll come down on that price.

They don’t really bargain....

I know they usually don't. She said to me in an email that if someone is spending thousands of dollars on their site they might make an exception in certain situations.

Now would that situation be for the Misery numbered edition? Probably not. But who knows

That’s a consignment, I believe. So the seller may be willing.

I got the Georgies Boat paperweight, #51,
then i got the Misery Cube and requested #51 to go with it.
Suntup replied that they can not guarantee a matching number as that number belonged the numbered Suntup Misery #51, but if that person did not order the cube, then i could have that number. and when my cube arrived sure enough it was #51 and I am over the moon.
then the Horns cube was released, once again I ordered it and requested #51, Understanding that Suntup would match it if the owner of Horns #51 did not order the cube. and again when the cube arrived it was #51.
when 1984 orders opened up I was one of the lucky 17 and got a numbered 1984, a number i kept when Let The Right One In presale was offered.
and the fourth cube
so herein lies my dillema, do i get a cube that matches my numbered LTRIO or try to get another 51?

I would match the number to the book of LTROI , just because those two belong together.

Have you checked your number designation? What if you got number 51 on 1984? That would be too cool! And problem solved. If you didn’t, then I would match the paperweight with the book.

If you want to play it safe, don't handle the front and back boards with bare hands. There is a chance that oils or moisture can transfer to the quartzite slate. As for the book itself, the nature of the binding allows you to open the book fully. In fact it just opens that way and the sewn threads keep the pages secure.

Looking for one of Paul's remarqued "The Gunslinger" prints, I missed that one when it came out. Anyone?

So I'm kind of OCD in terms of leaving stuff in the original packaging. I'm getting better, I swear!

But anyways, I've never actually opened the packaging on my Merrin's Cross paperweight. I mean I opened the shipping box! But I never took the paperweight out of the smaller white box that contained it... until tonight!

Anyways, inspired by Jeff's videos, I decided to capture the unboxing on film! It's not a very good video, by any means. I'm no Jeffingoff and I'm no Vannah White.

But it felt like a fun thing to film, especially with the Oskar's Cube paperweight still being available to order until Saturday.

wtf...your numbered 451 went from California, all the way to Florida, and then back to California again.

I have a feeling it got put in the wrong mailing bin or something. I know it's media mail, but it's usually not that drastic of a detour. Like a lot of businesses, USPS has had it rough during the pandemic.

I've had a lot of problems with packages taking a detour for awhile before anyone notices and finally get sent to where they're supposed to go.

I've received thousands of packages, and this is the worst tracking I've seen.

It went to Orange Co which is the next county to the west. Instead of coming to Melbourne, it went to St. Lucie Co which is the next county south. For some reason it then had to go all the way back to LA. I assumed it was headed back to Paul, but it should have reach him by now if that was the case. It now appears to be headed back towards me again. The next scan will tell me more.

Got my shipping for notice (no real tracking info yet where I can follow). Just that a label was created for my Lottery and GE Red Dragon. Can'r wait to see these two in person. But it's strange. The email says that one item is on it's way. But when I hit the View your order, it looks like Red Dragon is getting ready and getting prepared for shipping. So I will probably be only getting Lottery in this shipment and the Red Dragon GE is close behind.

I was a little nervous about putting mine on, it felt a little bit like after-market modification...

But having done it, I highly recommend it! You can always remove them and clean the acrylic, but it scratches very easily on and that's a much harder (or impossible) fix. Great idea to include these!

Ah, dammit, I missed those.

They are not hard to get hold of.

Ah, but those are like a secondary market slipcase; nice, fulfills the function, but not quite the same as the original.

Paul's Mini Clear Self Adhesive Domed Rubber Feet were carefully crafted for a perfect 94.7% clarity, allowing just enough opaqueness so as not to appear invisible while still capable of capturing and ever so gently refracting the full rainbow spectrum of evening light.

To ensure optimum protection against earth-induced vibration, the curvature of the dome was formulated by a group of MIT mathematicians taking into account continental crust density, average global annual atmospheric pressure since measurements began in 1643, and Newton's gravitational constant (G).

More than 300 plantations around the globe were evaluated for suitability before the rubber was sourced from a private, centuries-old Guatemala location originally used by the Maya for production of the õllamaloni to play their ritual ballgame pokolpok.

The glue was handmade in limited, numbered batches by a Dutch master craftsman and imported under tightly controlled conditions, before finally being applied with a brush held between the front teeth in the manner perfected by the Radium Girls in the early 1900's.

Face it; you really messed up by losing the originals.

This is a real question, that have crossed my mind several times : if I am not mistaken, it seems like there is an announcement planned for every month.

No matter how much we love Paul and his work, if someone wanted to get each Suntup book, at the budget of the "Let the right one in" that represents a (12x2.5k) 30k budget for lettered and about 7k for numbered (12x575)

Are there really a lot of people that can afford that, annually?
Can customers keep up at that pace?
Isn't there a risk to create customer fatigue? Or not really because people that buy expensive books are not the average citizens already, and Suntup already has a huge customer base / waiting list?

I don't know about anyone else but I had to let my Suntup number go a while back. I couldn't handle still having two payments due for a book and then another book announced to pay for. It's a nice hobby if you can afford it. I cannot.

I certainly think the market is more than big enough to sustain the frequency of release. Books are pre sold out within 2 days of announcement and Paul currently has to do a lottery to cope with the demand for the rest. Will they always be sold to the same people? I think not. Currently the numbers of both Lettered and Numbered that have bought everything is around 30%, however repeat customer purchases are waaay higher.

Right now it pays to keep buying as supply and demand mean you are unlikely to lose money on your purchase and some people are buying and selling, just to stay on the matched designation train.

As time goes on, I think people will be worried less about "keeping a number" and focus on specific titles.

"Are there really a lot of people that can afford that, annually?" - I think there are a few, yes.

The market can MORE THAN bare this. Not only Does Suntup sell out.. Look at Lyra... look at titles from Subpress, Centipede,etc... The market is more vast than Suntup and what is coming out from them. With a waiting list as long as Paul has? Always someone to take the place of someone who decides to stop moving forward with them...

I still believe that eventually, and I'm not making any guesses as to when, Suntup will start to look like a "normal" press, with a more even combination of (a) customers who buy every book, (b) customers who buy some/many books, and (c) customers who buy the occasional book. Right now it's very heavily tilted toward group (a). And also right now, demand is so high that as soon as anyone "gives up" their number there are more than enough people waiting to take it over and buy every book they can. That's how we get into a situation where, out of a run of 250 copies, we have less than 20 that are not claimed by previous customers. That's >90% retention, and that's nuts!! Things like increasing print runs to 350 occasionally will speed this along. I'm not saying at all that one model is better or worse, for either Paul or the customers! But I think eventually we'll get to a point where we still see sellouts for most titles, but the buyers become a more diverse lot. People who don't (can't) buy every book, but are able to snag the books they want, mixed with folks who still get every release, mixed with folks who only buy a rare title here and there.

EDIT: I agree with Kris that the market is definitely there! And strong. I also agree with Simon because it dovetails nicely with my point - I do think in the future people will be less concerned with matching numbers (as trying to build a complete matching set becomes harder and harder with every new release) and will focus instead on just trying to secure the titles they want the most.

I could be wrong, but I dont think that Cemetery Dance, PS Publishing, Subterranean, Gauntlet, Centipede, Charnel House etc release as many limited on a yearly basis? I certainly don't see an announcement every month

Otherwise, I agree with the customer base and waiting list

What I am afraid of is that I will say one month, "nah, I don't want that one'" and I lose my number. Then the book after that I say "yea, that one is awesome!!!" But since I said no to the previous one, I would have to wait for the public pre-order and I just know I won't be fast enough to get it. As long as the prices are around "Let the right one on", or even lower, then I should be good to go. But if Paul has 2-3 books in a row that are $600-$700, that would be tough. This is not a complaint or me whining. I just don't want to miss any other books. So I am staying on as long as possibly can.

Just speaking of CD, Subterranean and Centipede. They announce/publish many more than one book a month. I have at least 14 pre-order books from Subterranean so far for 2020, Centipede has announced 10 so far this year, and I bought 10 books from CD in 2019 and I don't buy even close to every title they announce. So I think Suntup actually announces far less books than these three.

I don't know about the others, but I am pretty sure CP has a news letter every week that that they announce books in. Like I said before, I just want to be able to stay with Suntup and maybe branch out a bit.

This is exactly right. There is a misconception out there that we announce more books in a year than other publishers in this market. As Rebecca correctly points out, we do not. But don't worry, if 12 a year isn't enough, we're going to be doing 24 next year!

Yeah very few people buy every book a publisher produces. Sooner or later long time Suntup customers will have to step off. And step back on where possible. Or sell some editions in order to maintain their number for those must-haves.

Oh for sure! And for every person who can't or doesn't want to maintain, there will be a few more wanting to step in. I think Paul can maintain the current output when it comes to selling out editions. Just as long as he doesn't grind himself to a nub. :D

I had to jump off due to a Covid layoff with no clue when I might return to work. Thankfully I returned sooner than later but it cost me a very nice copy of LTROI as I had to enter the lottery and I'm not going to pay aftermarket prices. I was selling off the copies I wasn't favorable of to get the books I wanted and to stay on track. Even with the increase to 350, I believe the days are gone when you can pick and choose which books you want without entering into a lottery. It's best to stay on board if you can and sell the titles you don't want. Those of you that hang on to every title are in a whole different league.

One book per month is not much. I could buy everything Suntup publishes, but I only buy the titles that I like and I'm fine with that. All limited editions are the same with a different numbering, I have decided not to give it much importance to the number, because it is only a small mark on the paper. I know that in the future I will not have to worry about obtaining a title because the limitation will be 350 copies. The Suntup books are beautiful, and I understand the effect it has in the mass of collectors.

I don’t do the lettered editions (kids are expensive, yo), but I intend to stay on the numbered train. I typically buy based on author, but Suntup books are so gorgeous that they are the only ones I buy purely based on the publisher.

Yep! Most of the announcements from SubPress are just tossed in their email newsletters. And there are a lot of them. Same with Centipede Press. He announces new books in his Sunday email and they're usually books that people have seen coming for a while because of his straightforward website. (Looking at it, BTW, Jerad released 17 books in 2019, 20 books in 2018, and 28 in 2017.) But no one else creates such events around each release.

Yeah, when lotuz initially reported back, I took his post to mean that there were 145 unsold (the number remaining showed 145 available in inventory but since ordering was closed, those 145 were locked out). SO I thought that meant there were 205 sold.

Be honest, you photoshopped this right!?

I'm amazed at how these weird things happen to your copies. First you get the only copy of a book that's missing a designation, and now this! That should absolutely be red. I will replace it for you if you wish. It should not be that way, and my apologies. I think I'm just going to remove 23 from the list to avoid any future weirdness. You won't mind will you??

This doesn’t bother me at all. In fact I loved it when I thought it was an editorial detail and I love it even more knowing mine is the only one that appears that way. I think it totally fits the story and the person who continues to crash the Suntup party.

Okay. Your decision, but happy to replace it. I checked with the printer and it's what he calls a "double". Two sheets went through the press at the same time, so one missed the red ink. And as you say, by some universal adjustment, it ended up in your book!

Got my "The Lottery". I love it. The art work... The printing and binding. Everything is just wonderful. And that cover. How can anyone not love that. This is a great addition to the Suntup collection. It's going right next to the HHH. Even though it's not in order. I want books by the same author to go together.
Great work Paul.

Years down the line, in the eventual Suntup Editions bibliography that will be produced, there will be a special section for "Jeffingoff Variants". There will have to be a small camera crew sent to Jeff's house to take pictures of his Suntup books, and a meticulous check of every headband, tailband, endsheet, title page, and limitation page, to determine just how many of these special variants exist. I will make a lot of posts about it in great detail and it will all be much fun

Aside from Jerome’s very astute response, I will add that there was no Lettered edition of that portfolio. There was only a single edition where some were designated with a letter instead of a number. And it was non-sequential. Over and out.

I LOVE randomness. It reaffirms that the universe is always in chaos.

New idea: publish a S/L book numbered 1-500, but only actually sell 250 copies, numbered/lettered at random. The book should be something about the randomness of life-a person(s) killed by someone using a somewhat random selection process
Maybe even one single book with the same number/letter as another. Ship the duplicate to jeffingoff.

Who knows what will be discovered. Maybe it’ll turn out that The entire text of The Cat in the Hat Comes Back isn’t supposed to be bound into the middle of The Road. (I didn’t remembered it being there before but when I read my Suntup edition I thought it made the novel take on an even deeper meaning.) The show could be called the Jeffingoff Editions. I thought this would be of interest. The paperweight for Let The Right One In is a complex one to make. Someone had sent us an interesting observation; that the configuration of the colored squares on the prototype in the photos made the cube impossible to solve. We were aware of that, and had already planned for the production run to have a cube with a combination of colors that is solvable. There's a website (https://ruwix.com/puzzle-scramble-generator/?type=rubiks-cube) we used to determine not only an ideal placement (we needed a red square at the corner of one side, but also that its a solvable combination.

It isn't possible to use an actual Rubik's Cube because it would get distorted and damaged during the production process, and any colors would not remain intact due to extended/excessive heat and pressure. So we're making a replica cube to achieve the effect. We also wanted to make sure the colors were accurate, so we used the specific Pantone color codes for each. This is a diagram showing the placement of the squares and the color codes.

A lot has gone into making this one, and it should be a fun paperweight to have.

I didnt know that one specific configuration was impossible to solve!
I didnt know that there were configuation impossibe to solve

By the way, Netflix released an interested documentary the other day, titled "The Speed Cubers"

It's actually kind of the opposite—some scrambled states can never be created. The core of the cube is fixed as far as where the center colors sit in relation to one another. For instance, the green center is always opposite the blue center on a standard cube. They're connected by an axle, like wheels, so you could never have something like two blue centers or a corner or edge with both blue and green, etc. Unless you take a cube apart or take the stickers off a stickered cube and reapply them, there's no way to scramble it that can't be solved, but if you just add colors randomly to a blank cube, the chances that you'll create a scramble that's actually possible in reality are astronomical.

As always, it's great to see how much attention to detail Paul put into the final production of this. I'm not the one who pointed out the colors on the prototype, but I'm not surprised someone did. Seeing cubes in unsolvable states is something that drives some cubers crazy. I'm just bummed I couldn't afford to pick one up—it looks like it's going to be awesome!

Can I just say that I have never been more thrilled by a survey than when I just opened that one and was immediately asked about Haruki Murakami?!

I’ve never read any of his work. What’s he most famous for?

I'd say he's most well known for The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle or 1Q84. I'd recommend starting with A Wild Sheep Chase or Norwegian Wood, if you wanted to read some of his works.

He has a very easy to read style, equal parts surreal and melancholy.

Wonder if it’s a good or bad thing that I didn’t really have any non-SK suggestions for a limited edition. I guess after Let the Right One In it’s hard for me to think of something I really want to see.

I went with Silence of the Lambs and Weaveworld for my two suggestions.

Anything Murakami-related would be fantastic! "1Q84" is probably the book most consistent with Suntup's horror/sci fi line but I would also recommend "Kafka on the Shore." "Killing Commendatore" is another with a bit of horror that would work with Suntup.

My two picks beyond Murakami are:

1) Under the Skin by Michel Faber
2) The Wolfen by Whitley Strieber

I’d love to see some
Blake Crouch..... happy to see him on there.

Me as well Kris! The one's I picked also lent themselves well to fantastic art, while continuing to focus on some themes important to our times whether dystopian, humanity in general, or a perspective to drive some individual introspection.

Can I approve of this post with a hearty LOL, but pass on the physical aspects of both suggestions?

The Suntup Royal treatment on either of my two suggestions would be spectacular:

1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy

2. Jurassic Park

I think I wiped a tear when I saw The Butcher Boy among the list of titles. Just that it's a consideration is amazing. Thank you.

Centipede Press recently did an edition of Kafka on the Shore, so that one may not be likely.

I had the same reaction when seeing The Impossible Times trilogy amongst the list of living authors. Just the mere possibility of it not being totally impossible is just great, the fact that it has been taken in consideration. 😉

Thank you!

And I decided to color in the title page myself. I think I did a pretty good job...

Your work calls this to mind:

I went for

Replay by Ken Grimwood
Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris

I take it both are in development by omission from the previous lists..result

That is one of my most famous works--Whistler's Stepmother.

Even if it gets no other votes, it meant a lot for me to see it there.

In honor of Jeff I voted that every Bentley Little book needs the Suntup treatment starting with The Mailman.

Lol! I'm telling you, there's a bizarre future timeline out there where Little will be a GUEST on Jeff's show.

Once Suntup did an edition of Madison County, I figure anything is game. For the fill-in-the-blanks, I suggested:

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the original art by Joseph Schindelman. Replacing his work with a different artist for that book and my interest would drop considerably, but a Suntup edition with that artwork would be the prize possession of my collection.

Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.

If there had been another, I would have suggested Jurassic Park.

I chose The Ocean at the End of the Lane for Gaiman (and could easily have gone for Coraline or Neverwhere), but I've read nothing from Murakami. I have read a few things from Vonnegut, but I detest his work and chose nothing.

I only chose two from the "choose three" list: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (of which I've only read about 20-30 pages of an online sample - but how fantastic that bit was) and All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

My open suggestions were Shadowland (Straub) and The Name of the Wind (Rothfuss).

Well, then, I think what you'll witness is an old-fashioned case of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). Due to that trauma, my psyche will have no choice but to bifurcate and create a new personality--one willing to accept and look forward with gleeful anticipation to a Suntup book authored by Little. This new personality will take full ownership of those feelings, while my original personality will simply "lose time" and have no recollection that those books ever existed.
