Great news for IAL "5/7/20: We have been informed that our bookbinder will be opening up again on May 18th, at which point production on the Numbered Book and Lettered Enclosure will resume." It looks like binding needs to be done on the numbered and case making on the lettered.
Plus some of the others are moving along nicely as well. Awesome to see this.

I thought you'd like to see this little book we're working on. The book block weighs in at 4.5" thick, mainly due to the heavier cotton paper being used on the Lettered edition. This is one of three 1000+ page books that are in the pipeline. So this edition will be split into two volumes. For comparison, you can see it here beside the Lettered Horns.

That looks MASSIVE! Are both the numbered and lettered editions being split into two volumes? Or strictly the lettered because of the cotton paper?

Also, is the use of cotton paper thematic with the nature of the novel? ;-)

Also, can we get a close-up of the cotton paper's texture? Possibly on the title page?

Man O man. A dual volume book. So that image is basically the one book that will be split into two volumes. Not two volumes of that thickness. That being the lettered version, with that certain paper, I doubt the numbered will be two volumes. A 1000+ page book can be done in one volume. But I am very excited to see this one when it's done.
P.S And you have three 1,000 page books in the pipeline? Impressive.

Of course the Uncut version is better. Doubleday MADE King cut the first version. King was not pleased.

It's only the Lettered that will be 2 volumes. The paper is not thematic to the novel, it's just a nice premium paper. It's actually the same paper we used on the Numbered Misery. No more pics though, sorry!

My favorite King books are Eyes of the Dragon, IT, and The Stand (the order of my favoritism changes depending on my mood and which I've re-read the most recently) and even if there were 100 other limited editions of The Stand I would still want to see a Suntup version! And I'd be fine with either text, the original or Uncut. Or a DRE version of the Uncut would be neat, as it would probably increase the retail price enormously to use original first editions.

I do understand why people would want other books, of course. To some extent, with the smaller (though increasing) output that Paul has chosen to maintain, the choice to do a certain book may mean not doing a different book. And I think there are lots and lots of authors that are worthy of having a Suntup Edition limited, and lots of books that have never seen a limited edition and deserve to. To be honest, I feel that to some extent about the HG Wells books. I do think it's neat to have a nice, matching series of books from a very deserving author, and I think the Wells books are also generally very important books in the American canon, and specifically to the emergence of science fiction as a genre. But I will admit that my first thought was: "Three (then four) books by the same author? Let's give some other authors a shot!" Are the beautiful? Yes. Am I going to buy them all? Also yes. So I get that people might have the same feeling about The Stand: "Another limited edition of a book that already has a nice limited edition? Let's give some other books a shot!" But there are folks that are over the moon about the HG Wells books and I'd be over it too for a Suntup version of The Stand :)

On a different note: right now I am most excited about Red Dragon. What is everyone else looking forward to the most?

I Am Legend, War of the Worlds, Invisible Man, Red Dragon, Fahrenheit 451, or The Lottery?

The Stand
Infinite JestAlthough i really want it to be The Stand (my all-time favourite King book) & Paul already confirmed it will not be The Stand.

I think some of the other possibilities are ;

- IT , not likely though because he made a Dragon Rebound of this.
- The Lord Of The Rings , it wouldn't be the first time a publisher compressed these three novels into one edition
- War & Peace , Leo Tolstoj's absolute masterpiece. Counting about 1220 pages.
- Atlas Shrugged .
- The Count of Monte Cristo.

I’m pretty sure I just figured out what the books is. I’ll put it in spoiler so if you don’t want to know you don’t have to look.

It’s a bound book of all of our survey responses. The best part is the Lettered Edition is going to be signed by Ben Stein who is not only doing an intro but a detailed analysis of all the replies. Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

The book I’m most excited for is June’s announcement, assuming it is what I think it is. All signs point to a visit from Big Brother.

My guesses for what the book is in the picture would be Catch 22 or slaughterhouse five. Slaughterhouse five is more wishful thinking than anything else. It’s too short of a book to be that large I think. But I think it is the perfect book and story for a Suntup edition. Hope we get to see it happen someday.

Sure, no problem. Yes the Lettered Legend books are complete and I have them. Just waiting for the cases to get done. Here's some pictures.

Although the glue sticking the stake to the cover was adequate, I decided to also screw it down to make it even stronger. So there are two small screws on the underside, going through the board which are recessed and covered under the pastedown so that you don't see the screws.

No problem. This is something I feel strongly about. For the most part, we will have worked on a book for up to a year before announcing it, so this means that it is already quite far into production by the time it's announced.

OldCrow88

Paul, I think all the upfront prep helps you be cool as a cucumber when doing videos and announcements. (In contrast to us frenzied screaming fans on the edge of our seats watching) you're like, "Well, we've been working on a few books, they're turning out quite nice, I'm not going to mention that Easter egg for another title sitting on my desk..." Such a contrast to the the style of some other publishing houses: "I'M USING 18 EXCLAMATION POINTS IN MY ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!! AREN"T YOU EXCITED!!!! THE BOOK WILL SHIP RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER IN 2025!!!!" Kudos to you, Paul.

What if the real mystery of this weekend's title is that it is the first title that Paul announces VERY early??

"We're pleased to announce our first journey into the mystery genre. What does the title look like? No idea! Haven't planned that yet. It'll be a mystery!"

A little detail, but I love how the spine label for The Lottery excludes Suntup Editions just like Hill House. Those are the only two SEs like that.

I really do like how each book looks completely different due to the hand marbled paper, making each book unique in it's own way.

I mean if I complete the transfer of rights form right now, can I then send the link to the person who I transfer it to so they can order the new book before Saturday 9am? Technically I am not selling anything, but I have ordered The Lottery, was just going to give my rights away (with conditions). Or is it too late, and I would need to be the one to buy the new book, and then sell it.

Let's assume you are talking about selling your copy of The Lottery. If you have a buyer, conclude the sale and submit the seller form. If that is done before Saturday at 9 a.m., then the new owner can get the Matching Pre-Order link. Although that should come from me, after I receive your seller form. It also means that technically, you cannot place an order for Bibliomysteries before Saturday. But I don't think you wanted to buy it anyway.

"Technically I am not selling anything,"

Okay, this changes things. If you aren't selling The Lottery, then you cannot transfer the rights to anyone. The current owner of The Lottery, whether that is you, or someone you sold it to, will have access to pre-order before Saturday. If no sale takes place, then only you can order Bibliomysteries before Saturday. The buyer you are referring to can also just wait for Saturday and place the order. There are always copies available when it opens up.

"Or is it too late, and I would need to be the one to buy the new book, and then sell it."

Yes, you would need to buy the book and then sell it if what you are looking to do is provide someone else with the ability to purchase Bibliomysteries before Saturday. You can't just assign "rights" to someone without selling the book. And when I use the word "rights", really all it means is that whoever owns the last announced book, will be able to order the next book before everyone else, thereby guaranteeing a match.

Rebecca, if anything I've said here is inaccurate be sure to rap me over the knuckles.

Yes, you should have received a letter from me in one of your print orders last year. I think it was December. It answers that question. There will be just under 60. On the topic of the cigar box, it's similar to a clamshell, just a slightly different structure. "cigar style" is just a term used to describe this particular construction.

I just received the Suntup e-mail for the cover of The Running Man they are printing as part of The Covers Collection. Love the idea of a clamshell design. I like clamshell traycases generally - particularly when the book has a dustjacket. Slipcases can cause edgewear if they are a bit tight or the DJ isn’t perfectly aligned.

I think it's irresponsible for Paul to encourage cigar smoking around his books! Now he needs to have a warning on the cigar box. Like the Surgeon General's warning. That would actually be fun and somewhat necessary when you consider that Suntup Editions are habit-forming.

It's really a shame that this title was announced after April Fool's Day. Can you imagine a joke "behind the scenes" video of Paul puffing on a cigar and blowing the smoke directly into a cigar box traycase "to get the scent just right"??

Would've been hilarious!

I think it's irresponsible for Paul to encourage cigar smoking around his books! Now he needs to have a warning on the cigar box. Like the Surgeon General's warning. That would actually be fun and somewhat necessary when you consider that Suntup Editions are habit-forming.

ALSO, I do realize that cigar-style is just a way to describe the clamshell container and it doesn't mean these will be Paul's discarded Cohiba or Drew Estate boxes.

Paul has already confirmed that the author of the introduction is signing BOTH the numbered and lettered editions.

But that doesn't mean that it will be King. It could also be Hill, Ahlborn, McCarthy, or Harris. I'd say it's a toss up between King, Hill, and McCarthy.

Can i ask why there is so much speculation about king in the next book?

Because of the clues Paul gave:

Book is 70 years old

signed and introduced by an author he's previously published who hails the book
visionary work/important dystopian book

So the 70 year dystopian has everyone pointed to 1984.
The only living authors who he's previously published: Hill, King, McCarthy, and Ahlborn.
King has listed 1984 on several of his top 10 favorite books of all times list (well, I saw it on one list attributed to King).
Wishful thinking.

Ass it all up and we have speculation that has lasted more than four hours. Call a nurse.

EDIT--you could also ADD it all up.

I wish he was King, but there are more possibilities for Hill. Hill could do a double signature for each book. Hill is a good guy.

Ass it all up made me laugh.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if it was all that. Just reread the email from Suntup and confirms the intro author is signing both numbered and lettered.

I think Joe but if either of the other two, it will be wow!

But the current book, looking forward to reading the kindle versions and introduce myself to these authors.

Thanks Jeff.

Edited, to ass: happy if any of those 3, think Joe more likely.

Thomas Harris is another living author that Suntup has published (will publish, technically), though he doesn't fit the bill.

As you've said, King lists the book amongst his favorites. Joe Hill has also given the novel a 5 star review on Goodreads. And there have been scholarly papers written comparing Nineteen Eighty-Four with McCarthy's The Road.

I'd say it's a toss up between the three authors. King is definitely the preferred of the three, but I'd be happy with any of them.

MikeDuke
05-16-2020, 10:27 AM
Yep, Jeff and I talked about who the intro author could be and I sent him basically what he just posted. I think it will be a King intro. I also think it's a nice way of people who may have missed out on Misery, to get a book with a King sig in it.

I think in the email that Paul sent out, it said authors that were already published. Red Dragon was not published at that time so I don't think it could be that author. But I could be wrong.

Oh, and Paul, impressive sell out. I don't know how many were left but congrats to those who got one. If you are new, welcome to the club.

Here there is only a personal opinion.
I have bought Bibliomysteries to keep my number. It is a nice design, although we have only seen the dustjacket, we do not know the design of the spine and other details. If the spine is similar to the lettered edition, it would be great news for everyone. The illustration, I know that most people like it, and I am among them. The artist, although using straight lines, has good technique, excellent use of color, his style can transmit the essence of each story.
The stories are not the Best of Bibliomysteries, the selected stories have a regular literary quality, can highlight F. Paul Wilson and John Connolly. But we lost Joe R. Lansdale, Joyce Carol Oates and Michael Koryta, they also published stories for Bibliomysteries. Maybe there is a Bibliomysteries vol. 2?
However, although they are mystery books, there is something of fantasy and suspense. Despite all that, I have not been bewitched.
Bibliomysteries is the most successful after King. This needs a newspaper article.
Mis felicitaciones a Suntup.

Now this could actually be the case. In the mail he stated : "This is a very unique book for us as it marks our first release in the mystery genre"

Our first release, these words could specifically be saying it's not going to be Suntup's only release in the mystery genre and could indeed have it's follow up.

Which brings me back to the title page, it includes the year 2021.
I already posted this earlier on this thread but i'll include it again with this one.

I still think it's an error but what if he did this to let us know he's planning to release Bibliomysteries once a year ?

Now for the June release; i absolutely want it to be 1984 with a new intro written & signed by King. So i've got my fingers crossed! [emoji41]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200516/b84262430ef12de30017b6afa93a26b5.jpg

Also, a new quarterly update due too next month.

My speculation is that it will ship in 2021. There are many titles in production and then wait for the shipping phase. However, Suntup does not fail on shipping dates.

Yes, I also believe after this resounding success that there will be Bibliomysteries vol. 2. Maybe in 2022, if we are still here.

People seem surprised that this book sold out faster than Red Dragon. RD has a 1000-copy gift edition while Biblio has none. With RD you had another option, but with the new book, it’s numbered or nothing. (Lettered editions are locked up so they don’t count.)

Yep, so remaining books after the pre order were bought by new individuals, if people stuck to rules. Wasn’t there 30 available.

Not many more new people to the limited, but still possibly 30 more. Not sure what my point is, but just an observation.

I don't see any real connection between King and 1984. If it were Lord of the Flies, then maybe but not Orwell. Hill seems most likely due to availability but that would detract from the book in my opinion. McCarthy would be my choice if limited to authors already published by SP. Someone like Margaret Atwood or Haruki Murakami would be perfect for 1984, though.

Yes, i read that list a while back too. King also uses quotes from 1984 on twitter every now and then, not too often but it happens.

If not King then McCarthy would be very cool as others have stated Hill signs everything he can get his hands on.

You know what, I really don't cares who signs it. I am not buying the sig, I am buying the book. So if it's King McCarthy or Hill, it really won't matter to me. All
that matters is that if we are right, one of seminal novels of the 20th century is getting the Suntup treatment and that's good enough for me. So I won't be guessing
anymore.

I'll pay whatever too! 😁 1984 is a classic dystopian masterpiece and was Orwell's last novel, his swan song if you will.
The Suntup treatment will do it justice, no doubt and will make it all worth it.

Seriously though, it depends on whether or not it’s letterpress. Or what materials are used. I can’t speculate on the value based on just those two variables. But I think it’ll be worth every penny.

Yeah, I'm really curious about the specifications of the book.

We shall see in a month!

It’ll cost whatever. And That’s exactly what I’ll pay.

I'll pay whatever too! 😁 1984 is a classic dystopian masterpiece and was Orwell's last novel, his swan song if you will.
The Suntup treatment will do it justice, no doubt and will make it all worth it.

Plus on a side note; 1984 was a good year.

The year of the Purple Rain....

I hear the lettered edition may or may not contain locks of David Lee Roth's hair!

As long as it’s not locks of Sammy Hagar’s hair, we’re good to go!

I know what I said before, but I am just curious. Seriously. I would love McCarthy to sign this book as well. But considering what his signed The Road books that are hard to get for, plus I don't know what other books he has signed (has he signed other S\L)?, I don't see why it it's a slam dunk for him either. I am just wondering what's the though behind McCarthy having more of chance then King that's all. And what would be the connection to 1984 and McCarthy. This is a serious question. But like I said before, I am buying the book, not the signature.
Thanks for any replies.

Though Murakami isn't possible for next month's title, I would LOVE to see one of his novels get the Suntup treatment!

Wow can’t believe I actually got a copy. My first Suntup numbered. So excited and even more so for next months!

Congratulations and welcome to the club! We don’t have T Shirts, but we do have a kick ass mug.

At this point, I’d say we’re more of a cult than a club.

We’ll need to get a copy of The Sacred Texts available as Roman numeral edition I/I. Bound in demon skin, printed with ink from Cthulhu’s ink sacs. My favorite thing about that book is that it contains Stephen King’s 19 pseudonyms. Each signed by King.

I’m skeptical that the next book will be signed by King, even if it is Nineteen Eighty-Four. King doesn’t seem to want to sign his own books much anymore, much less anyone else’s. So while I’d love if it were true, I suspect we might be hoping for too much.

As for price, I expect the numbered edition will be between $275 and $725 :)

I’m fine with whomever signs it, even one of the various Bibliomysteries authors. If given my personal choice, I’d prefer McCarthy - even over King - but I’ll be happy with any of them.

[QUOTE=Splync;1197979][QUOTE=RichardX;1197920]Just because I'm curious - why isn't Murakami available?

The author writing the introduction is someone that has been previously published by Suntup.

However, I still hope that we might see a Suntup edition of a Murakami novel in the future!
