So, this is a newbie question....what does someone usually purchase to be on the list for Advance Review? Does it come with purchase of a certain edition, or they passed on to trusted folks to consider them and pass on thoughts? I was a research specialist for the professors where I edited dissertations while working on doctorate if that helps me get in the group :)
It's a very exclusive club, and all memberships are taken. Your best bet is to get in one of the club member's will, so that when they die, the membership is passed on to you.

See that's complicated b/c then I'd be hoping for the death of someone who had put me in their will.

I appreciate that info, I was also asking in a general nature. I know this is the Suntup Thread and obviously that was my primary reason, but I have always wondered how this happens with all books. I've bought all types for years and never even been offered an opportunity to receive an advance reader's copy except once from Grim Oaks & that was with pre-order.

Thanks

In general most review copies go to influential people in the media or who have an association with the project - journalists, book reviewers, bloggers, agents, publishers, editors, etc. With Suntup, if you bought at the Silver or Gold level subscription, ARCs are included.

Makes sense, Thanks! As usual I'm just behind the times, would have certainly bought in at Gold if I had been here before.

I can tell you that I bought it because I totally wholeheartedly believed in Paul and his mission. Could I afford it? NO. I had never spent this much on anything other than my home! Not even a car... Near $35000 in CAD. We all know now that it was worth every penny but I knew then it was a steal. The lettered selling for $15K for Misery itself... made this all worth while. I do not sell the books.. I keep them. AT first I though I would sell them. Once I started to get them? Nope.... I AM a collector of King and of Paul's work. There is no one out there doing what he is doing. His career is just starting and I love being on the ride with him. Was it a gamble? Not to me... my only issue was how to get the money not whether I should or not.

Yep, I found out about Dragon Rebound about a month ago leaving me behind the curve. I also agree that, particularly with the lettered, I'm finding I simply want to keep them. I do have a bookstore, and always list everything even favorites but I'm not sure if I'll let go of the upcoming Rosemary's Baby lettered. I'll probably list it to show it off and set the market super high.

If I wasn't married, I would have found the money. But a lifetime subscription on top of a divorce was way too much.

True. My wife is a graphic designer and she LOVED the type treatment in The Haunting of Hill House. She rarely comments on my addiction. So I take it from her reaction that Suntup is an approved dealer. Still, getting her to agree to buy a lifetime subscription before there's a beautiful book to show her, that's a bridge too far. And even after I've shown her. Which is fair. We don't have "for special" money. Otherwise we'd be living in a Frankie Wright house with a Suntup library, furnished with mid century modern furniture.

Does anyone have an “Annie” postcard from the Misery swag kit they’d be willing to part with (for a price, of course)? I recently cleaned my office and I seem to have misplaced that one. I have the rest of the swag, just not that one postcard.

If you don’t end up securing one send me a PM and I will mail you one.

See, now the problem is to figure out how to display it (it's a beast) and to really fill it up with more than the prints I have so far (EOTD, DT III, and Desperation, all remarqued) ... good problems to have. Along those lines Paul, I fired you off an email yesterday evening.

True. Not sure how you all store the prints, but without the backing boards and plastic sleeves, you can obviously get more in a box. It's perfectly fine to store them that way, as long as there is the interleaving glassine sheet between each print.

There is no popcorn and the only box that has tape is the shipping box. I’ve moved away from peanuts and use the foam inserts. It’s a good amount of extra prep-work (they need to be designed and die cut to fit not only the book but also a standard size shipping box), but I prefer this method for several reasons.

ONE HAS to be less worry about any damage. I mean, you have to have the least of any company. I HATE (ABHOR) packing peanuts... you have the best packing I have ever seen. I am glad to hear it will be a thing from now on Paul. Awesome sauce brother!

It’s a lot of extra work and also an expense, but for now that is the plan. It started with the rebound IT. And I implemented it in Suntup from Misery. Not all books will have the printed ‘mailer’ though. For me the foam serves two purposes. Protection during shipment and that of presentation, which enhances the experience.

This is so true! I have never kept boxes/shipping materials before, but so far I have for all of my Suntup editions. It has been fun to share some of the experience of the unboxing with friends/family, when I'm showing off the collection, and it's been a great way to protect the books in the middle of a big move I'm currently doing.

It's very much appreciated, Paul. The packing method you use is second to none, and gives enormous peace of mind to your customers. Unpacking the Misery S/L - my first experience with your method - was a great experience, and a large part of that was recognizing immediately that the chance of any damage in transit was vanishingly small.

I enjoy showing someone the pictures of the upcoming Rosemary's baby...and then explain it started from someone doing the Dragon Rebound projects where it was something born out of creative love of books. Unparalleled story of origination for me so far on publishers...I am sure I don't know all the details of the story, but that's the interpretation I get.

Respectfully disagree as you’re a great salesmen - the teaser vids and your transparency with production are like collector catnip. In all seriousness I’d put your products inside a Venn diagram that includes the sheen and mystique of (pre-Cook) Apple products, the simple and straight forward mastery of Seinfeld’s stand up writing structure, (set-up, punchline, tag...no unnecessary fluff) and the philosophy of Bruce Lee that stems from practicing one thing 10,000 times instead of trying to master 10,000 things

And of course packaging akin to those old ziploc commercials where the tiger couldn’t figure out what was inside the bag bc it was so well protected

I’m getting such a Billy Mays vibe from Paul today. I’d say we’re about two more successful launches away from him posting videos of him running over one of his packages with a 58 Plymouth Fury and then opening the package to show zero damage being done to the book inside

“But wait, there’s more!”

As always, thanks for prioritizing customer satisfaction sir

Good one, but so not my style! I'm probably the worst salesman out there. I focus my efforts on producing a product that sells itself. I do like the idea though of driving over one of the boxes in a Fury.

Don't use a Plymouth Fury, use Sir Boomes Pontiac Fiero.

Well...... since you put it that way. Sure, I can be Bruce Lee! And Jobs has always been an inspiration to me. In several ways, I find myself channelling his core philosophies.

I will admit that I had to look up Venn diagram...

Exciting stuff
Looking forward to posts about how you do The Road lettered packaging:)...

Looks like I be spending another half hour to undue all the tape and clean up the popcorn. But it will be worth it.

There is no popcorn and the only box that has tape is the shipping box. I’ve moved away from peanuts and use the foam inserts. It’s a good amount of extra prep-work (they need to be designed and die cut to fit not only the book but also a standard size shipping box), but I prefer this method for several reasons.
OK. Packing foam works for me. Sorry it's more work for you though. Can't wait to get that shipping notice.

This one is coming along well. It's clearly a complex box, so we started out by making a prototype which is pictured below. After carefully reviewing this, I came up with a list of 8-10 items that needed to be tweaked or modified. We had to make some dummy books in order to size the inner cradle correctly, and we refined the swivel mechanism as well as the way the lid is attached to the outer box. Anyway, now that all of the refinements are clear, we are in the process of making the boxes for the run. It is shaping up to be a real beauty.

This reminds me that I still need a 1st Horns and 1st Road as well:)

Later McCarthy firsts are pretty easy - everything after All The Pretty Horses had giant print runs. Even the ARC print run was huge for The Road!

Of everything Paul's done, I think firsts of The Haunting of Hill House are the rarest, especially in Fine condition...

I tried for awhile to find nice firsts of everything that Centipede put out, but even a production schedule of ~20 books/year, combined with the rarity of some of them, made it too difficult. Paul's production is more my speed for this sort of 1st/1st collecting... And HHH is a really nice cross-collecting treat because Paul shared early on that the design for the lettered book was inspired by the first edition cover :rose: (which I’m sure you knew!)

For pretty much every release, there will be a Lettered and Numbered. I do have one book scheduled which I am only releasing as a Lettered. It's the only one out of everything currently in the pipeline that will just have a Lettered, so this is a rare occurrence. I am also planning on doing a Roman Numeral edition in the future. As for AGE's, these were pretty much handled on a case by case basis, but going forward if an edition is printed Letterpress, there will most likely be an AGE as well.

Any hint/tease/riddle on how someone becomes eligible to buy a roman numeral version?

Well... I have not thought that through yet, but there would be no way to become "eligible" for it. I'd like to make it as fair as possible for everyone. Of course, due to the extreme scarcity of it, there are those who will miss out. But at the same time, the pricing will be up there so it may exclude some people from being in the running anyway. So either it just goes up for sale, and the fastest draw in the west wins, or we could do a lottery. Just haven't put any thought into that yet.

Obviously do what feels right, but I think fastest fingers on the internet doesn't give a good glimpse at what this will deserve.

I am not one of them, but I think your trusted folk could be part of a draw. Perhaps actual creative scratch offs that can be bought and if you don't win then the ticket cost can be used towards future purchase and if you do....then you obviously win :)

Anyway, I hope I get a shot and money won't be what holds me back.

It's 444 pages. The biggest book I've printed letterpress, and likely won't be many more at that sort of page count because of the expense. It's a big book to print using that process. There is one I'm waiting on an approval for that is 1000+ pages, and I'm going to do it should it come through. Will be rather epic...

I am ready to go with next preorder as well. Can't wait to see what it will be. But Horns does look really cool. Plus, as I read closer, I saw the 1000 page reference. That would be impressive. I mean if Horns is this large (especially the lettered) a thousand page book would very impressive. I can't wait to see the binding and look of that book.

Would it still be in a single volume, or would you split it into two or three? I shudder to think how thick that spine would be...

Also, is it The Count of Monte Crisco by Alexandree Dumb-ass?

Thanks for trying to keep the uber-expensive books spaced apart enough for us pikers to keep up. It is strongly appreciated. ;)

Also- HORNS is looking really cool so far... As someone who was slow to warm to this edition (for my own reasons), I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yes, single volume but although the trade edition is over 1000 pages, because of the unique design and page size we came up with for this, it will come in at a good number under 1000. Still pretty thick though. But again, I'm getting ahead of myself here. It's not Monte Cristo.

Does that make it exclusive, though? I know he does his own leather-bound of Mistborn etc. and SubPress likes to have exclusive deals but for my purposes I do not care if someone else has done it. What Suntup is doing with books elevates it to art on another level. The signature of Sanderson is not of any value b/c he signs anything and even sells signed books off his site for a song...but I could imagine an amazing presentation better than some leather bound in traycase as SubPress does with almost every lettered edition.

On the other hand, I am under the impression that Suntup is working to do titles without limited editions recently done so you make a good point.

As a very general rule, I tend to stay away from publishing an edition of a book if there is already a limited from another publisher. This could be the collector in me saying that we just don't need another limited of that one.

So I will look to see what has been done before, and by which press. Then with that knowledge, I will make a decision. Even though I follow this basic rule, there are definitely times when I will still publish the novel, despite the fact that it has already been done.

Several factors play a part in that decision, one of which is the book itself. If it's a big classic story, I may feel that it just needs a Suntup edition of it. Another factor is related to what sort of job the other publishers did with it. Sure, our books tend to stand alone from the typical limited edition, but there are times where I feel that the previous publisher did a great job of it, and there is no point in doing my own version. Just like some movies don't need a sequel. Then of course, the converse to that is also true. If I feel the previous edition didn't quite do the book justice, then I will take it on.

And then there are publishers who have done several books from a certain author, and I tend to stay away from that because I respect the long-term relationship between publisher and author. Koontz and Charnel come to mind, McCammon and Sub Press, Sanderson as well. Also, existing contracts may prevent these and others I may have my sights on. So lots of variables come into play.

Right now, I have a good mix of first-time limited publications, and an SE take on some classics.

Your sensibilities as a collector make all the difference to your press. The books you pick, the way you pack, and how you announce each new release I think all come from that. Also, you're an artist approaching each book as a unique work, finding and delivering on the defining concept. It's really spectacular. And I'm glad you consider what's been done and what should be done before deciding on what to do. BUT I think you can definitely get away with doing new limited editions for books that have existing limited editions. I don't mind. Not one bit. So I'm thrilled to see that you're open to that.

I would like to give a shout out to Paul. I was tasked with helping a chap to find a Cujo. He had his letter from EOTD up and did not get to order it. He had some shit going on in his life and missed the window and thus Paul moved on and his letter went to the next in line. He was devastated. Here is where the story gets interesting. The person would not give up the book. I can understand that... They did not care that his set was going to be broken. SO, I started asking around to a few guys that may want to sell theirs. My thoughts for my buddy was... If I can get another copy for him, the guy with his letter might not care as long as he is getting the book. I found a DH and Cujo double letter that he could buy. The other buyer was fine with the swap of letters and the world was righted again. However...... when the book arrived he posted his shock (AND MINE TOO!) that not only did he get the other variant color of DH BUT IT WAS SIGNED!!!! Well, at first glance I was stunned. He had it posted on the King Facebook I run and he was over the moon. Chad (honkytonk) who is one of the guys that runs it with me... said he didn't like the signature. I looked again. FAR to large. He was right... we were convinced it was fake. Chad, played the bad guy and told him. Now, he was not mislead as we did not know it was signed but in my eyes this copy is defaced and the value has dropped a lot. I asked the seller if he knew it was signed and he did! He thought I knew and I did not but he in fact purchased this and sent it in to Paul. Paul's job is not to evaluate signatures or even look at what is sent in so he would have no idea. And nor did the seller. He was shocked we found it fake.

HERE is where Paul deserves a shout out. He comes on the thread under the post and OFFERS to help. He, at his cost, offers to take the book back and repair it by removing that defaced page and replacing it with a clean one. I do not know of any other publisher owner that would do that. I mean do not get me wrong, there are others out there that will help (CD has numerous times) but to just offer and take on that hassle when he is clearly BUSY as hell trying to get books signed and put out? It shows what kind of guy we are dealing with here as a publisher. I sincerely hope more authors find out about this guy and start to come to him because they want no other to care for their work and livelihood. Kudos for the help on this when you didn't have to brother. You again prove why I am honored to be a lifer with you and your company:) Cheers mate, kris

TOTALLY with you on that. I don't even own Finders Keepers. It might be an unpopular opinion, but Holly Gibney annoyed the living hell out of me. And the way Hodges' girlfriend Janey wrinkled her nose all the time drove me nuts. I only mention this because it's odd for King characters to chafe me so much. Maybe I just needed a hug at the time.

It's very easy to figure out. The files are color coded. And there is a pattern to how they are laid out. Look closely. If you can't figure it out, take a piece of graph paper and color the boxes left to right the same order as the files.
It's easier if you repeat the pattern at least four times, then look at the sheet.

Wow, the artwork for Horns looks fantastic! I only looked at the thumbnails to avoid spoiling the experience when I have the book in hand, but even those are gorgeous.

I'm torn on whether to get this portfolio. I want to collect everything with "my" number on it, but I don't collect artwork and the shipping costs + import duties would be almost as much as the portfolio itself... Sometimes, living across the Atlantic sucks.

Nice. As I said above, I hope Suntup does more of these for their books in the future. It's kind of neat.

Thanks, I'll quit looking for the colored filters now.

Apologies. My response to your request now contains an image you can see, not just the text.

It's okay. I just didn't want to miss the joke. I wonder how many people can read that? :orely:

I could. I have to take that test every 3 years for my job.

When I was young I wanted to be a pilot. I was given an eye test. They told me that since I was good at math I could be the navigator. :wtf:

I have what I consider normal vision. Go figure. I can differentiate colors. I have trouble when they are blended together though.

My brother went to the Air Force Academy and anything....anything other than perfect vision was keeping folks from going to pilot school.

Just ordered my Suntup art portfolio for Horns. I wonder if Paul will do some for the other books even though they may not have as many color pictures.
But I figured I might as well have the complete set.

I want it but hope it is still available in two days (payday).

It's an already limited pre-order aimed at previous customers. I assume it will be available for a little while.

The inventory value I put up there is just the max run I will do. The final run will be based on how many pre-orders I get, and I'll cut that off at some point so I have a final number.

Got you. I saw that part but maybe I missed when pre-order will finish. Anyway, good stuff Paul. But I am sorry if I was giving out wrong info.
P.S Is there a chance these will be sent out with the book or will this be after the book.
Thanks Paul.

I'm torn on whether to get this portfolio. I want to collect everything with "my" number on it, but I don't collect artwork

I had the same hesitation, but went with it. Partly because the portfolio has artwork in it that wasn't used in the book, and partly because I want a complete Suntup set for my number.

I guess for me it doesn't matter, since my number is 12, but just wondering how the number matching works if you want to match #222, but say for example you are only printing 175 portfolios. Will it say #222 of 175?

Given that he was willing to match to a letter, my guess is that after 175 purchases they match it and it isn't with the /175 designation. I'm sure we will find out soon.

It will be designated non-sequentially. So the limitation page will read something like this: "Of 150 portfolios printed, this is copy 222".

Didn't you do the same thing for the Misery paperweight?

Out of interest, do you know how many of those you ended up making? Did the entire run of 150 cubes sell out?

Wait a second! What did Paul mean by "Happy Friday. I mean, Happy Thursday." ???? It's a goddamned clue is what it is! He could have easily edited that replacing Thursday with Friday since he obviously caught the error before posting! So what does it mean? I'll tell you it means he's doing an edition of Robinson Caruso!
