If this is even half as beautiful as the EOTD edition, it will rock. Unfortunately I am currently submerged in a giant collecting debt that needs my enthusiastic attention, so I will need to reluctantly pass. All the best Paul and punters.

Hey hey. So I wanted to respond to some questions I've been getting. Everyone who ordered the first book will have an opportunity to get this new one with their matching letter. I've noticed some members who didn't get EOTD have expressed interest. Depending on what is left, you will also have an opportunity to order once the owners of EOTD have ordered.

I will share all the details of this binding along with a photo of the prototype in the coming weeks. I have some cool things planned for it and I'm really excited about this one. I think you're going to love it. Also, once again, a copy will be donated to the Haven Fund auction.

Peace

Paul, you're an evil, evil man for doing this. Right when I am spending all my book money on my studies (and will be doing so for the next four years) you are releasing these wonderful editions.

My only hope is that you're secretly saving me a copy of every title.

zelig
12-15-2016, 01:16 PM
I'll make a note of first timers who have expressed interest and get in touch with you in the order of your post should there be any still available. This will only be in the new year once previous owners have an opportunity to order. And I still have to post the details on this one. Yesterday was just a teaser.

Michaël, sorry buddy. But come on, you need to get your priorities straight!

When I saw this announcement I couldn't help to think of possibly trying! I told myself I would only use them once and they came through for me. I don't like to "use" people(for lack of a better term) and they offered the first time so I don't want to abuse the privilege. Of course I would like too but we'll see ......

If you purchased a copy of the first book in this series, you will have first shot at acquiring a matching letter of Firestarer. You will be receiving an email with an order link soon.

Binding details:

The book is a wood binding and is quarter bound in leather using the Bradel binding structure. The spine is covered in Nigerian goatskin and is tooled in gold with raised bands and woven silk headbands. The front and back boards are quartersawn Sycamore and are shaped at the edges to create an elegant cushion bevel. The wood is scorched and engraved. The marbled endpapers are handmade in Italy.

A signed limited edition museum grade giclée print of the original cover art by Steven Stroud is printed on Museo 285gsm Textured Rag Watercolor Paper and is included in an acid free mandarin booklet envelope. An original drawing (aka remarque) signed by Steven Stroud is bound into the book. The book is housed in a custom handmade traycase.

Is Mr. Stroud going to be doing the drawings 'on demand' depending on what everybody chooses or are there going to be a limited number of each, first come first serve?

Good question... and no need to apologize for asking! The drawings will be made to order, so Steven will be drawing exactly what is requested. You will have an opportunity to make your selection at the time you place your order.

holy crap I haven't been on the site in a couple of days and totally missed the email this morning (i got it, but somehow overlooked it). Thank GOD I checked in today. If I had missed the deadline I likely would have put a sword through my gut to save my family's honor.

I, too, am having trouble deciding on the remarque. I am leaning toward the eye, but the B&w is tempting.

If that wood Japanese promo item is legit (no reason to believe it isn't), it's priceless...except I can't read it; even with the cheat front cover.
Bruce, HTF do you come up with this stuff?

I showed my wife the book and then the remarques and she said THE EYE with no hesitation.

So I went with the B&W.

I keed I keed...I chose the eye. Still having a mild anxiety attack that I could have easily missed this with the 48 hour window and missing the email. :onfire::onfire::onfire: (emoji pun intended)

Maybe I missed it in the description on the site, but is it safe to assume these will be 1st/1st page blocks?

I was playing around on Paul's site and noticed a ghost link hidden in the corner that led to the page still under construction for the THIRD book. It is CUJO, bound in real dog fur, and we each get to pick what breed of dog's fur we get, no doubles so each volume is a one of a kind!

The crappy part is apparently Gerald somehow already has dibs on St Bernard...jerk. I am debating whether to go with Chihuahua for the irony or Long Haired Retriever.

I really hope I don't have to miss out just because I'm short right now. So much anxiety. I may have to cancel some Cemetery Dance orders.

Don't worry Tommy, I will work with you on timing. Don't be anxious. And please don't cancel any CD orders. I don't want Brian to throw darts at a picture of me!

It's a tough time of year for big purchases too. The payment plan is mighty cool though.

I hadn't considered the timing with it being close to Christmas spending. So many things to think about, sometimes you can't cover all scenarios. But now I know for next time... If anyone is really in a crunch, I will give you some leeway.

This is not only a book, it is an art form.
Wonderful idea, beautiful presentation.

Officially it's 48 hours, which would make it tomorrow around 9am. There's a small handful of previous owners who haven't ordered yet, and I'll check in with them tomorrow. I'm going to allow a little leeway because timing wasn't the best for some folks given the holiday spending. So I'll know more tomorrow and will provide an update. I'm fairly confident that you'll be able to get one because you're higher up on the list.

I didn't recognize Mark Ryden's name and just Googled him - pretty unique style and no doubt a talented man, but not quite my taste (I generally wouldn't want his art in a book I bought; I didn't like the Desperation/Regulators covers).

Having said that, for certain unreal things, I think he'd be just the person - I would like to see what he could do illustrating the otherworldly sections of Lisey's Story as well as the surprising stuff we see at the end of Revival; I can picture him going in a Bosch-like direction for these.

Paul, I'm just curious as to how you got started on these projects?

I like the thought process behind these things :)

I'm also curious as to how I got started on this... I don't really have a clear, definitive answer for it. Not to get airy fairy, but in some ways I feel as if I've been guided toward it. You asked.... so here's a longish story for you.

The first time I saw a rebound book, I was instantly drawn to it. I just loved the concept, and the fact that you could give such special treatment to a book that has meant so much to you. I don't remember when this was. Maybe a few years ago.

The way I felt about it, well it sort of peculated in my mind, and my initial thoughts were to take some of my favorite books, find a book binder, and have them rebind my copy just for myself. I even made some inquiries and got some quotes, and it was more than I could spend at the time.

Of course, I wanted to do Eyes, and I think the tipping point happened exactly a year ago when I forced myself to take a vacation. I had not been away on a vacation for many many years. A year ago, I was still trying to recover from some health issues I was going through and I was very stressed and anxious at the time. So I took this forced vacation and I drove up to the mountains. It was the first week of January 2016.

It was cold and rainy, and I was sitting in the hotel lobby with my computer. I had the idea to rebind EOTD several months prior, but I never did anything with it. I got stuck in my head and I kept telling myself, I can't do this. I don't know where to start or what to do, and I was basically stuck in this holding pattern for some time.

Then that day I was sitting in the lobby with my computer, and I was so tired of all the negative talk in my head and all the procrastinating, that I said, Paul, stop thinking.. Just do. So I went online, researched some bookbinders and fired off 10 emails. I was really anxious about it for some unknown reason but I just forced myself to do it.

Anyway, the rest is history. A few responded. I ended up going with the one who was most enthusiastic with it, and even though these are still early days, ever since then I feel as if I'm being guided down this path and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's way more work that I expected and I find myself spending hours every day on it, but I'm enjoying it.

Do "The Shining"? Rare, I know but it really needs a re-binding.

The cost of rebinding is the sum total of all of the aspects of acquiring the books, the involvement of the artists, the binder and materials needed, the slipcase or traycase production and several other elements.

In order to rebind 30 books Paul needs 35+ books. Not all of them end up being of use. Some turn out to not be first editions and some aren't in good enough condition, no matter the diligence involved in purchasing them. All other aspects being equal the initial cost of the source books is a large consideration in pricing the project. There was an ample supply of The Eyes of the Dragon which helped keep the cost down. There are fewer Firestarters which necessitates a greater investment to secure the page blocks to be rebound. Rebinding the Doubleday books would require a much larger investment. There simply aren't that many copies of them in decent condition available for reasonable prices. Not to say it isn't possible, but buying 35 copies of The Shining or The Stand in decent condition would be prohibitive. The final product would necessarily be priced beyond the means of most.

I know, but he asked. It is certainly a novel in dire need of re-binding is all I meant.

All but two of the original EOTD buyers have purchased Firestarter, which translates to a 92% retention. Right now 96% of the Firestarter book is sold and I have one copy left if anyone is interested. Wait list people have already been given an opportunity.

So anyone looking for a copy, send me a PM. Once that is gone, this book will be sold out.

I will be posting more pictures and updates as it moves through production.

Thank you everyone again for your support of these projects! A big part of why I do this is because of your enthusiasm and the joy these books bring...

Even though I've been a tech guy for most of my life, when it comes to social media, I'm about as social as I am in real life. That being, not much at all... I'm not really into Facebook.. Sure I log in every so often to see what my 'friends' had for breakfast, but I don't post much at all. I do like to catch up on news from my brother in South Africa though, and other family members.

Creating Facebook pages? Forget it...

A friend of mine kept telling me I have to make a Facebook for some projects I'm working on; one of them being these rebound books, and I finally caved to the pressure. I figure it's a nice way to keep folks updated as the book goes through the process of being made, and anything else of interest.

So I created this page (https://www.facebook.com/Dragon-Rebound-Editions-1619403898367537/) and will post updates that I think would be of interest.

Here's a production update.

I have approved the final proof for the cover artwork print. This process was more involved that I thought it would be. I went through 11 different proofs trying various types of paper and positioning before I was happy.

The finished giclée print will be on a fine art acid free, 100% cotton rag paper with a textured finish.

Once these are done, I'll be sending them off to Steven Stroud for signing.

Bruce, I had not considered having any of the artisans sign the book. Not a bad idea, although we couldn't sign the back of the boards because the marbled papers are applied there. I'll give it some thought.

The artists? As in Paul, the binder, the woodworker, the paper marblers, the illustrators, etc.?

Paul has been fortunate enough to gain the involvement of the original illustrators in his projects. While their contributions do help to make the end result special, they are not necessarily the main focus.

I concur. The only two signatures that add to the book are from the artist, and the author. If a buyer wants Paul ( and others) to sign their personal copy and they are willing, that's great. Otherwise I say leave perfection alone.

I think this conversation is about what constitutes an artist rather than who should sign. It seems everyone agrees only the artists involved should sign.

For example, if the person making the boards hand picks and scorches each one to get a specific look and feel, does that count as art? I agree that anything made with a repeatable process doesn't count, but it seems there are a number of hand made, unique components involved. The tradition is obviously artist = illustrator.

At the end of the day I don't feel strongly either way.

Paul is the ultimate arbiter. I know on the copy I purchased, I want it exactly as described. What the other buyers want is between them and Paul, but at some point, every single person involved in the process can't sign the book (who cut down the tree, etc.).

I speak for myself having purchased one. Paul has obviously put quite a bit of thought into this project. "Too many cooks spoil in the kitchen spoil the broth" comes to mind.
I can't answer the hypothetical question myself, as the project has been announced, and I like it as it is.

Stephen Stroud should sign.

Any artisan can affix his trademark.

If buyers would like Paul's signature then they should ask him for it.

I think this conversation is about what constitutes an artist...

It's worth pointing out that, were this a run-of-the-mill (woodworking pun not intended) copy of Firestarter, no one here would be interested in it at all - it is precisely the work of the craftsmen behind this edition's unique qualities that make it a subject of interest at all.

This reminds me of something: I ordered a CD (a music album, not audio book etc.) from overseas (it was not widely available, not on Amazon etc.), and the mailing form on the box contained customs information, which required a signature. Turns out, the signature was that of the main guy (song writer/vocalist/guitarist) in the band - I basically have an artist's signature in the form of a simple piece of mail (yes, I saved the box).

Since you asked, I will abuse the opportunity to plug the band:

The band is Traffic Experiment: http://www.trafficexperiment.net/

The musician is Stuart Chalmers.

The "sampler" video (which is quite good) for their only (as yet) full album (Blue Suburbia) is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHU0MTxd1Cs (go ahead, give the guys 3:22 of your time; this is a nice cross sample of the album's various moods and is set to some simple but evocative video). I think they call themselves "art rock," some call it prog, but I find it a bit more radio-friendly (not in a bad way) than much prog.

All of the songs from Blue Suburbia can be heard at: http://shop.trafficexperiment.net/album/blue-suburbia

I also hope there is a lot of relief between books. I am thrilled to be in on these books but if there are going to be multiple books each year I hope the price is more in line with the first book and doesn't grow exponentially with each book as it seems to have done with the second. Right. I'm just lining up future titles. I don't think I will do more than 2 a year. As a collector myself, I can sympathize with not wanting to be hit every other month or so with a new book to buy. And there is so much time involved working on these anyway.

In terms of pricing, every book will be different based on the bindings. I've done my best to keep the costs down and not compromise on quality. Many designer bindings can cost in the thousands. So I have to find a happy balance there.

Anyway, breathe easy folks. I won't bombard you.
