View Full Version : The SKMB thread

A place to discuss all things regarding the official Stephen King Message Board.

I wonder if Mr. King spends much time online reading forums posts. Wouldn't it be riot if he was a regular poster here and nobody knew who he was ( accept Bev, who knows everything ).

Here is the thread folks. Personally, the message board is way too heavily moderated. All there needs to be is a big disclaimer and TOS that you agree to.

Brice
02-05-2008, 08:55 AM
I think even if he did read some boards he probably wouldn't be a regular poster. When would he find the time?

ATG
02-05-2008, 08:55 AM
Whoops. I jumped too fast.

Wuducynn
02-05-2008, 08:55 AM
I think we made them at the same time

Brice
02-05-2008, 08:57 AM
Well, I can't but I'm sure someone will merge them soon. I almost started one too.

Matt
02-05-2008, 09:04 AM
Hmmm...which to merge to which. :orely:

Wuducynn
02-05-2008, 09:05 AM
Doesn't matter.

Matt
02-05-2008, 09:12 AM
Okay, its a done deal then. I was saying in the thread where this started that I think caution is probably the genesis of how the place is set up.

I can just see how it would go.

Poster 1: SK is an ass!

Poster 2: I'll kill you

Poster One sues Stephen King because they were threatened on his message board.

Now, I understand a disclaimer could be put up and I believe that you can set the board that it must be agreed to before you can post...but would that be enough to protect SK from crazy people :orely:

Its something to think about.

With that, its kind of a drag it has to be that way and a fully moderated board does have a way of curtailing discussion.

ATG
02-05-2008, 09:23 AM
The no posting on weekends and at night is the real killer.

Matt
02-05-2008, 09:24 AM
Its funny because I always forget and then think I'm in trouble because I can't post.

Brice
02-05-2008, 09:25 AM
I have done that a couple times too Matt!. I almost sent her a PM once asking if I did something wrong.

ATG
02-05-2008, 09:33 AM
I did that, she was like; "Duh,did you read the FAQ? "

Daghain
02-05-2008, 09:57 AM
That's why I don't post over there. Too much censorship.

Matt
02-05-2008, 09:57 AM
I did that, she was like; "Duh,did you read the FAQ? "

I wonder how many of the overall PMs she gets are in regards to this very thing.

I wish I could log on, but when I tried to re-log on back when they switched to the new message board system, it kept saying that my ID was incorrect and then when I changed my ID slightly just so I could join, I never got any e-mail confirmation. So I gave up.

I think there was a thread there about people having problems when they switched to the new board. I'll try to see what I can find about it for you Matthew.

I e-mailed the head mod in charge of all that, not Ms. Mod but the other one there, twice and the first time he told me to go back and try again, (which I already did) and then for the second, I never heard from him again. Fuck 'em.

Brice
02-05-2008, 02:05 PM
Well, Okay then. I just thought I'd offer to try to help. That is kinda' lame though.

Wuducynn

Thanks, its just not worth yours or my time. TheDarkTower.Com lays waste to the official message board 7 days a week and twice on Sundays anyway.

Matt
02-05-2008, 02:09 PM
They had a bit of a problem with new members when the board changed. Its weird about the email because I got that right away.

Not sure whats up with that Matchu

And thanks for that last bit, not necessary but totally cool.

jhanic

I had the same problem. The confirmation took almost a week to get to me.

Holy hell, that isn't good at all.

Its a vbulletin set up and I know from experience that there can be major problems with getting auto board emails to go to certain address now.

They are treated like spam and simply not delivered at all in some cases. :(

Now...I'm hoping it would be okay to move the SKMB comments over to the thread for it. I am as guilty as anyone at getting carried away in here.

Agreed.

Here, one feels freedom to call a spade a spade, or a stinker a stinker, like in the case of Liseys Story. But over there, it's like walking on eggshells.

Brice
02-05-2008, 03:42 PM
Hmm... I don't know. If I didn't like something for example one of his books, I'd just say it. What are they gonna' do ban you for disliking something or talking bad about it. That wouldn't be too wise for them. Word of mouth moves quickly. If I got something to say I'll say it. If you feel Lisey's Story sucked there's no reason to not say it there. It would actually be kinda' refreshing.

I think i tried to post something on the board, I can't remember when, and it required me to rip off a testicle and post it for registration so I decided against it.

I posted quite a few messages on there last night, just in book discussions and such like, and I swear they actually showed up on the board...but aren't there this morning...

I was drunk though :D

I was a member there a while ago (must've been the old board) posted once and then left because of the frustrating mod/post situation. As has been said, its not very condusive to generating discussion.

ZoNeSeeK

But i guess they have to protect the product, you know, its an official site so whatever is on their represents the views of stephenking.com, to a degree.

When you make a post Lisa you (and only you) can briefly see your own post. It is not actually on the board until a mod approves it. So...it was not just the alcohol...this time. :P

Ugh...another thing I can't stand about SK's MB is that the moderators mod the posts but they don't seem to care much about the fact that newbies just post repetitive threads all the time.

Matt
04-08-2008, 12:41 PM
I think its funny how many people start a thread with their "personal message to King"

The messages are very touching to read but I just find it amusing that they think its like fan mail.

Wuducynn
04-08-2008, 03:12 PM
Yeah...I honestly think they don't get what a message board community is all about and how it works. Same with the ones just making threads instead of going back a few pages and seeing if one has already been made. Which it invariably has.

Ricky
04-08-2008, 04:08 PM
You wouldn't believe some of the stuff I read on SKMB and others like it. Do they actually believe that SK reads every single post that they post? It's kind of sad actually.

Brice

Yeah, somehow I suspect he's not a messageboard addict.

Wuducynn
04-08-2008, 04:23 PM
King does check his message board once in awhile from what I understand, but its silly that folk think that he is going to be reading their threads/personal message of thanks to him.

Matt
04-08-2008, 04:58 PM
I would think so, but just because of the sheer volume of stuff he would have to look at.

It would be like keeping up with every thread here...it takes some of us all day :ninja:

I bet he would if he could though, realistically I mean.

Posted my Ms. Mod on the SKMB regarding the Talisman.

Del Rey has provided us with the exclusive sneak peek of the color versions of Morgan Sloat and Speedy Parker which you can view on our new landing page (http://www.stephenking.com/promo/talisman_gn/) for this project.

I wouldn't push the panic button just yet.

Frankly, I think it could go. Being heavily moderated as it is makes it hard to have any kind of conversation on there. I rarely if ever read it anymore, let alone post.

alinda
04-01-2009, 10:35 AM
Yeah, well IMO we have a better site anyway!:wtf:No offence to Sai King
its just that when it comes to friendliness like you mention Dags, we are tops!
I rarely go there anymore myself, when I want to plug into SK's work or just
need info on something I just peruse this board, I still doubt I have seen everything
on it.We have such a wealth of stuff at our disposal its incredible to me!:grouphug:

That "poll" they have on the SKMB is a bit rigged. No matter how you vote, it registers your vote to close the MB.

Matt

Yep, it was a big ole joke and I was very surprised by the amount of people that got sucked in.

I know Jordan would not throw away the amazing amount of work he has put in so I knew it right away.

My comment on the poll was...

"look, Jordan is so dang busy he can't even get a poll set up right. I think the more popular the site gets, the more the technical side will suffer"

He PM'd me and said he thought it was funny.
