View Full Version : Great Music - Playoffs Round 1: 1975-1979 (Bracket 4 of 8)
For this playoffs poll, please choose one track to move on to the next round.
IMPORTANT! Please do not simply vote on name recognition (or lack thereof) alone. Please do listen to each nomination and then make your choice. Even if you think you know a track well, it's still worth giving it a listen for a refresher.
The poll will run for seven days. Discussion is greatly encouraged!
The nominees are (please let me know if any video doesn't play for you):

Can't believe "Stayin' Alive" is our only disco track left during this time period, although it is one of the best.
It is the anthem of disco.

I can't begin to express how much I HATE disco.
I can't begin to express how much I HATE disco.
It's one of these days: I come here to say something and find it already spoken.
Landslide. Of course.

I also agree.
And I apologize because it appears that the last three polls I voted it I brought them all to a tie...
All these ties will make me go gray... :pullhair:

There have been so many ties lately.

What happens in the event of a tie?
First, we go by stated votes in the thread. If that's tied, we will need someone who did not vote to cast the deciding vote.
"Landslide" seems to have an edge in stated votes so far.

Stayin' Alive
tied again http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k291/mishemplushem/Facilitation/bear_grin.gif (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/mishemplushem/media/Facilitation/bear_grin.gif.html)
On the one hand, this is painful and frustrating, but on the other it's just a testament to how great these songs are that a lot of these polls are so close.

With about 24 hours ago we are tied at 12 and stated votes also appear to be tied.

I need to get my wife to unearth her account so she can weigh-in (weigh out disco) on this.

 Disco is one era of music that I can not stand. I'm not sure there's a single disco song I enjoy  Hopefully someone else that voted for Landslide will come in here and say so.
Why is disco so hated? I never understood it. I like all kinds of music, regardless of genre. Great disco tracks like this one have a great beat, awesome basslines, and are usually pretty inventive. "Stayin' Alive" is one of the best songs in its genre and as per Wikipedia: "In 2004, "Stayin' Alive" was placed at number 189 on the list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time [and] it ranked No. 9 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema."

Music is kind of like food; everything is distasteful to someone.
My daughter once asked me, "how come with the bands you listen to, they don't have to sound good?"
My daughter once asked me, "how come with the bands you listen to, they don't have to sound good?"
This is a really shrewd observation, by the way.
The only answer I can come up with is: for the same reason that great paintings don't have to be beautiful

That's true, to an extent. A genre cannot be all bad. Especially a super popular genre like that. But there can be bad songs or songs you don't like. I can usually find great tracks in any genre, so I'm kinda omnivorous when it comes to music.

Since this seems to be headed for a tie-breaker, I'll state that my vote was for Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive (1977). Just don't ask me to explain it.

Exactly. The enjoyment of all forms of art is highly subjective to the individual. Personally I can appreciate a number of different musical styles but it certainly doesn't mean I like those styles. For this poll I appreciate both songs but only one sparks a perceived positive emotional response.

I should point out that my daughter wasn't making any kind of sophisticated observation - she just really hates the vocals/voices of Steve Hogarth, Steven Wilson, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Maynard James Keenan (which I find to be quite good).
The point is, everything sounds good to some of us but not to others.

Both are great songs, but Stayin' Alive is the more iconic between the two....
To break the tie, my vote goes for Stayin' Alive.
The poll has closed. "Stayin' Alive" will face Queen - We Are the Champions (1977) in the second round.
Fleetwood Mac could not win by a landslide and after a late rally the Bee Gees stay alive.
