Yes. Just what we need. Another edition of The Shining. But still, I ordered one and entered the drawing. Sigh!

Thanks -- entered. I won't be picking up a copy, though...heck, I'm not even picking up the CD version. The Sub Press edition will do me just fine (but I certainly wouldn't turn down a free, signed Folio ed.).

Also entered the drawing but agree, how many editions does one need? This would make four(which in comparison to others is minimal I'm sure ;) ) However, I don't know much about these particular editions. What are Folio books and how do they rank as a collectible?
Thanks for posting by the way!

Unless there's a good reason not to get it, I'm getting a copy. They're great quality books, very readable, and the 4 of 11 art samples look fantastic to me. Thanks for sharing, 1 of 10 signed copies will be an amazing prize.

Under the terms and conditions, it says new customers. http://www.foliosociety.com/pages/shining-prize-draw-terms-and-conditions

But good point, that's odd.

I ordered one. It looks great.

This is King's first Folio appearance, as far as I know, so it's hard to gauge. I can say that there are a couple Folio volumes that I've had my eye on for a while so track on eBay, etc., and their collectible value is generally minimal and like a used car falls as soon as it's yours, similar to an Easton though even a bit more decline, given that there is no gilt, leather, etc w/ the Folio. Since it's King and there's no previous example, it's hard to say for certain, but for general purposes, one buys a Folio book because they want a decently produced example of a book they like, but not as an investment.

I entered with my name and email and I am a customer and it took it. Not sure how they are basing it. Maybe I'll have my girlfriend who is not a customer enter as well.

Thank you! I've been reading up on these a little and it appears that they are very nice editions and not very expensive(compared to what we're used to, lol) so what the hell, another Shining for the shelf!

The original link (http://www.foliosociety.com/prizedraw/shining) seems to be working for me. "The Prize" tab is blank, but there's a form on the "Prize Draw Entry" tab. I think they changed it though because on this page (http://www.foliosociety.com/pages/theshining-competition) at the bottom is says all you need to enter is to place an order before 26 June.

becca69

I also get a blank with the new link. The old one seems to work.

jsmcmullen92
05-10-2016, 04:28 PM
I have no idea any more. When I got the email this morning the link in the email didn't work. Then I went to their site and got the first link I posted. Went back later today to look for the 10 vs 100 and the link didn't work and had a different one that said 100.
If I click the first link I get nothing but 2 tabs that one is a form for entry the other is empty. The 2nd link takes me to a page that says 1 of 100 signed. I think they are trying to get everything situated. From my sleuthing it looks as if they took away the enter to win and went to the buy a book to be entered. The T&C for the entry form was taken down as well and the only T&C I can find are the ones for the buy a book to be entered.

TLDR:
Basically you have to buy a book to be entered to win 1 of 100 books now.

For those of you still getting the old link try clearing your cache and see if that makes it go away, I am going to email them for clarification.

Just read (as in I just read - damn those double meanings) the terms and conditions - no mention of having to purchase a book. Unless they're changing that. Here's a brief snippet I just copied:

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Open to non-members and new customers aged 18 or over, except employees of the Folio Society, its associated companies and suppliers. Members of employees’ immediate families (namely spouse, children, parents, siblings) are also ineligible. Existing customers and members of The Folio Society are not eligible for this competition. This promotion is void where prohibited by local law.
No purchase necessary. Only one entry per individual permitted. Entry only via the Folio Society website at www.foliosociety.com.
By entering the Prize Draw you may receive future email correspondence from The Folio Society. You will always be able to choose not to receive emails from us by following the unsubscribe message in any future email we send out.

Chad and Kris, which link is working for you and which T&C page are you on I dont get why some links are working for some but not others

Edit
I figured it out. If you are signed in to folio only the second link works which is why my laptop works for that one, 1/100. If you are not logged in the first link works saying 1/10 which is why my iPad works for the first link, 1/10. So I would assume there are 110.

That's interesting - for the 10 copies - the one I entered - that's for non members - so if you're a member I presume you can't enter both contests; but I guess your odds might be better if there are 100 of those available.

For information. In the UK it is illegal to require a person to buy something to enter a competition like this. They have to offer a, "No purchase necessary" option.

Well there is this bit in the T&C : "Existing customers and members of The Folio Society are not eligible for this competition."
Personally I think that all of that is confusing.

Let's not forget the : "This promotion is void where prohibited by local law."
What does that mean? If you are from a territory to which they cannot sell those books, then you cannot enter?
And do they have restrictions like Hodder vs Scribner? I guess not, but who knows?

I apologise for the confusion caused.

I can confirm that there are different draws for our members and non members. Non-Members go into the smaller draw, where they have the chance to win 1 of 10 copies and this can be entered by filling in the form on the website. Current members can enter the bigger draw, for the chance to win 1 of 100 copies, by purchasing any book from us between now and 10 June. I entered the non-customer contest, then bought another book (the Terry Pratchett one) but had to create an account with a different email address as it wouldnt take my normal one for some reason (the order page told me I couldnt create a new account as that email already existed, but the forgot password page told me 'no account found'!) I think its because I signed up to a now defunct mailing list with them a few years ago.

So I wonder if I am now in both draws?

Dear Mr Krynsky

Thank you for your email.

I would be happy to answer your questions. In all, over 2,300 copies were printed and it is available now.

We do have some copies signed by the author and the illustrator. However, these cannot be purchased. We are currently running a prize draw in which the purchase of any of our books before midnight (GMT) on Sunday 26 June would automatically enter one in a competition to win one of these signed copies.

I do hope that you find this information useful. If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Just an update, I'm going to cut and paste my latest email thread with them as the info isn't quite as clear as I usually get so I don't want to misinterpret anything.

=============================================
Tomas Krynsky replied May 11, 16:35

Thank you for the reply Edward. I'll let my readers know.

On various online forums there has been some additional information posted that I wanted to make sure was accurate:

- There are 10 signed copies for non-customers that can be won by entering the drawing (no purchase necessary)
- There are 100 signed copies that can be won for customers of the Folio Society / or those first time customers that buy a book between now and June 26th
- The total number of signed copies available to be won is 110
- The contest is open to anyone worldwide not just those with addresses in the UK

Does that sound accurate? If so, could you clarify

- If a person signed up for the non-customer drawing and then later purchased a copy of the book is he entered into both drawings? Or does his purchase move his single entry from the 10 non-customer section to the 100 customer section?
- Does everyone who buys a book (regardless of title) get entered into the 100 signed copy drawing automatically, or is it for customers that purchase a copy of The Shining specifically?
- Are these 110 copies in addition to the 2,300? Meaning is the actual print run 2,410 copies?
- Is there a slipcase that comes with the book?

Thank you again for your time,

Dear Mr Krynsky

I would be happy to clarify. The first four statements of your email are indeed correct. As to the fifth, one can only enter the draw once, even if you enter and then later purchase a book. I can also confirm that the draw can be entered on the purchase of any book, not solely 'The Shining'. With regards to the print run for the book, please be aware that this is not an exact science, as it were. There were roughly 2,500 copies printed in all. I can also confirm that the book does indeed have a slipcase. This is true for all of our book unless otherwise stated.

I do hope that this clarifies matters.

Kind regards

Hmmm, well that kinda sucks. I entered the contest for the 10 copies first, then bought a book, so my chances of winning are much smaller than if I had just bought the book :(

I think this contest is a mess. I don't know why they had to complicate things with this 10/100 thing. It should have been you buy a book you are entered to win 1 of 100. I agree with Becca. If you entered first as a non-customer before buying, your chances are much less. Doesn't seem fair.

Yeah I was trying to decide if I was reading that correctly. I would like to think if you entered the front form and then bought one it would move you to the 1/100 rather than the 1/10. Also the front form allowed entry of previous customers if you were not logged in. I signed up for the front one with my normal information that is tied to my account and it let me through.

Gift horse...yadda yadda...It's a mess but they're giving away 110 signed books of a special edition of The Shining. For 10 of those all is required is roughly 27 seconds to enter.

I'm not sure which contest has better odds: non-book-buying cheapskates vs. paying customers.

I'm actually debating buying a different book since you get entered just with a book purchase, not just The Shining.

If I use a different email address when ordering that book I should, in theory, be entered into the 1 in 10 and 1 in 100 right?

Non-buying cheapskates?
They set up the convoluted "free" contest and sale.
Why don't you pony up, buy every copy, then have your own lottery.
Hopefully your rules will be coherent at the onset.

No rules, I'd sell them to the highest bidder or at an inflated price. Which is what they could've done. I don't see why you'd say "free" instead of just free. Anyone can put their name in for exactly zero dollars. Others can buy any book they want. The signed Stephen King book would still be free to the winner.

Cheapskate comment...well, I don't do smiley faces (I didn't actually mean it) but I'm not going to apologize if someone got offended. If a person entered without paying (something for nothing) but can still find a reason to bitch about the contest being convoluted, then yeah, they are a cheapskate.

I also entered the contest and then bought the book. Oh well.

On both the previous page of this thread and on the FS website.

Entering a Folio Society contest 101:

Every single non-member person on the planet with an internet connection can enter to win one of the ten signed books. No purchase or previous membership required. No strings, you don't even have to sign up for the newsletter.

Persons who want to enter for the bigger pot of one hundred books are required to buy a book. Any book at all. No previous membership required. Also no strings.

Hope this helps.

I quite like The Folio Society (I own 1 book and 1 set of 6 books from them and have about a hundred of their titles on the "must hunt down" list) but find their Shining a bit too staid for my tastes. Not complaining; it's good to have a variety of publishers' takes on these things.

Contacted them yesterday and here is their response. Since the book wasn't damaged but the slipcase was, I asked for a replacement slipcase. It's really refreshing to see things like this handled so well.

I am sorry to hear that your copy of 'The Shining' arrived in less than perfect condition. I'm afraid that we would be unable to replace an individual slipcase, and so instead a replacement copy of the book itself will be despatched to you. I do hope that it arrives safely and in good time.

As to the damaged copy, there is no need to return it. We do ask instead that it be donated to a local school or library.

Thank you for your support for The Folio Society. Should you require any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me."

Oddly (or not), I had pretty much the exact same problem and response. I was pretty blown away by their customer service. Hopefully the next copy shows up ok.

Incidentally, the first one arrived on my doorstep encased within a comically oversized white nylon bag, zip-tied with customs tags. The Folio box inside was sealed and seemed unmolested and the book inside packed fairly well in bubble wrap. It almost looks like the book went in the box with bumped corners.

Books packed in larger bubble wrap and inside a box. Then put in a giant white bag. I thought my postman was santa and first. I had no idea what the hell she was leaving me and thought it was a mistake. Saw my name and thought it was some sort of joke. Then saw it was Folio and thought, "Damn, Foilio says the are printing them shortly and sending them when done." To be honest, I never dealt with them before and I was super impressed. To be frank, they surely don't fuck around! lol

It's pretty neat that artwork fits the tone of the book as well the Folio Society general style. Much like Centipede Press they have a recognizable format and you'd be hard pressed to confuse their books with other publishers.

I know, I think they'll do a good job of it too. If they do an edition of 300 though I'm worried I won't be able to get one because I think they'll sell quick. Dune's a favorite enough of mine though where I'm not worried about accumulating a few different copies. I know I probably won't ever get a nice first edition, so I'll take what I can get:)

Probably cheaper at Folio too I image. If I can't get in on the ground floor with the same number throughout, I'll pass on the series. And the cost of course. Not a do or die for me. Just thought it'd be a nice looking set to own.

Well... here in Los Angeles, I received my first dinged copy on Tuesday, the 24th. Still waiting on the replacement, however, for which Folio sent me a shipping notice- free expedited shipping- on Wednesday, the 25th. The turnaround- and amazing response- are head-spinning. Got this email today about my Shining Folio edition. Great to hear, but I feel they should replace just the slipcase and not the whole thing. It is great to read that they are trusting enough that I am not lying, I am not, but I feel they are losing money in simply replacing something damaged like this.

I'm kind of in the same boat but on a different book. It's one of my favorite books and this is about the only special edition they have produced. Plus the chance at a signed Shining is an awfully tempting carrot.

My replacement copy showed up a few days ago- with a very healthy dinged corner to the slipcase. Since it didn't affect the book, really- I'm ok with it. At this point, it's looking- rightfully- like the Dinged copies are the "Trade" edition, and perfectly fine copies are the "Limited" edition, so- congrats to those who lucked out!

*Edited to add: I really like the edition. I think, ding's aside, it's a unique, and classy King edition of one of his top 3 books.

Bummer, Paul. Cool bag though. I'm thinking these books must be damaged before they are shipped or poorly packaged inside of the bag.

zelig
06-09-2016, 02:21 PM
They are packed in a way that makes it easy for corners to get bumped. Even though the book is wrapped in bubble wrap, the box size doesn't allow for much extra space between the book and the box. And even with the bubble wrap, the corners tend to have little padding. Not surprising these are being bumped during shipping. I'm over it.

swintek
06-09-2016, 06:44 PM
Yeah, it's tough to say whether they are pre-dinged, or dinged-in-transit. The shipping boxes are tough to "read": as Zelig says, they are seemingly well-packaged, in bubble wrap. The Folio boxes, however, are really thin and flimsy- which seems to be a staple of UK shipping boxes. All it would take is an average drop of a few feet or so to affect the book. Too bad. I've had quite a few books sent from Folio over the years and never had a single issue. Of course, on the most important one- 2 "dingers" in a row. Oh well, as I said- I'm cool with the least dinged. And, really dig the book.

Brian861
06-09-2016, 06:53 PM
Well, in that case, the undinged copies are the limiteds :). Based on the consensus, I guess we can declare the dinged copies the variants. Wonder if this info should be placed in the variant thread, Paul. (kidding) :).

MikeDuke

Wow, too bad for all the people who got dinged ones. I guess I was a lucky one because mine was not. Mine was wrapped pretty good I think. Someone else took it out but I believe it came in a shipping box wrapped in bubble wrap. Again, sorry to all the people who have damaged ones. I wonder how many people ordered from here and what percentage of those were good and what percentage were dinged.

It is interesting to me that we are having so many issues with this book. It leads me to believe that they were all damaged pre-shipment. I have ordered the entire Tolkien collection from them at one time and all the books showed up perfect with no damage in a box not much bigger than the ones they are trying to ship this in. Who knows, maybe the USPS is practicing for the Hammer Throw competition with these white bags.

It really is ashamed that they are having this issue with so many copies because they really are nice editions. Do they actually have a brick and mortar store? Thought I remembered reading that somewhere or someone posted that they visited it. Might be best to get it directly from the storefront if so and have some of our UK mates hook us up if future editions come out that we may be interested in.

Yeah, I got the standard email today about replacing the whole thing, and recommending I donate the old one to school or library. I wonder if these replacements are coming from the original allotment? Wasn't this supposed to be limited to 2 or 3k? Seems like there are a lot of replacements. I'd agree, Joe. Better QC on the front end would save them a ton of time and money I'd think. Not to mention the frustration on the customers end even if you aren't required to send it back. You'd think someone in the Folio hierarchy would realize they are hemorrhaging money on this deal put a stop to it. Or the markup is so great that it isn't even putting a "dent" in the profit margin.

My replacement was also dinged. It seems they have this program called the humdinger special. You buy one ding and get the second ding free.

I was on the fence on buying this one, but if anyone has a 'dinged' copy that has been replaced, I'd be happy to take it off your hands. I can live with a ding for the right price!

As could I Simon and did :).

Ha I wonder how dinged it would be shipping it back across the pond :) PM me, I bet we can make a good deal.

has it been determined whether the "Introduction" by King included here is previously released? i'm thinking yes?

Just received my replacement copy. This time it wasn't in a big white bag. Otherwise the packaging was the same (minus the bonus notebook). Was surprised that it was undamaged. The box was very flimsy.

Ordered mine 17 days ago and it's still not here. Probably getting lots of extra dings,

It's being custom dinged by craftsmen of the old English ding tradition, which dates back to the 1600s, when wobbly-wheeled wagons first attempted to transport books over cobblestone streets.

...because quality control is a two-way street.

Ding ding ding! Is that a bright idea or just another ding to the slipcase? Who knows?!

My copy finally arrived today, 17 days after I had ordered it. It was packed in a brown cardboard box that had lost all its structural integrity, and looked like it had travelled across the Atlantic Ocean several times before reaching me. The book was inside bubble wrap, but the slipcase still had a nice ding it.

Mine arrived last week. The mailman left it, along with a CD AE Salem's Lot, on the neighbors doorstep.

The bag works well as a slingshot to really throw that box across the room. The box looked like it had been reused a dozen times. I suspect it was new when it started out. It was well labeled with "Fragile" and "Do Not Crush." Which is amusing since you can't read the box through the bag.

The book had one loose wrap of bubblewrap. I'm amazed that there is no damage. I still need to remove the shrinkwrap, but it seemingly arrived intact.

Really ashamed that there are so many issues with this. It's a really nice edition; dinged or otherwise.

The bag thing is really dumb. Mine was undinged but I was surprised considering how easy it would be to get damaged being thrown around in that bag. My box also looked like it had been through hell.

All that said, I am really pleased with it. It is much more impressive in person than in pictures.

Thinking about it. Just not into the whole selfie thing and I really dislike photos of myself. But still, might have to suck it up for what might an extremely rare item.
