Thanks a million, everybody. Your kind words are appreciated. And lotus, these are just IKEA shelves - I wanted affordable and modular, with doors. I also had little "locks" made from a 3D printing company (you can see the little black things slightly hanging on the top of the doors).

came to Ellison late (of course), and really took to his horror-weird focused stories... Here are two 1st editions I'm lucky to have in my collection.

Angry Candy signed by Ellison and also signed by the dedicatee, Robert Bloch, which is less common.

The second is Strange Wine which has one of my favourite inscriptions in my collection. I wanted something that captured Ellison's personality, and his inscription to TOR editor David G Hartwell is perfect, I think.

Very nice. Bloch and Ellison were, and still are, two of my all time favorite authors.

Your Ellison collection is a thing of beauty... While I'm deep into Bloch, science fiction appeals to me less, and thus has limited my exploration of Ellison (although when his science fiction gets horrory, I really like it).

Books of Blood (Vols 1 - 6) by Clive Barker. These are the Wiedenfeld & Nicolson UK 1st edition hardbacks (preceded by the less attractive, true 1st UK edition Sphere pbs). Each volume is flatsigned by Barker.

Some of Barker's most disturbing artwork. I remember you saying you weren't big on Barker, and I'm much more of a fan of his horror than dark fantasy style. I assume you've tried these, Steve? They're probably in my top short story collections of all time...

Nice! I love those covers!!!!
Cheers, Dez. Yeah, me too. Looks like they're done in pencil, very macabre.

Cheers, man. Yep, Barkers art and same as the Sub Press editions (which I sold to fund these - didn't really see the need to have two almost identical sets, and these had 5 extra sigs).

Continuing with the Books of Blood theme. These are the true 1st editions, published by Sphere. I've been looking for fine copies of these for years now, slowly upgrading copies along the way. Now I finally have all six, in unread, near mint condition, and flatsigned by Barker.

Oh, those W&N editions are really nice. Congrats, Peri.

How did they come to be flatsigned? Did Barker sign a limited number of sets on publication, or were they done after the fact?

There are a few editions of Books of Blood put there, and I have the SubPress set. But the W & N edition is very tempting, and I'd definitely pick up a flatsigned set if one came up. Very well done, sir.

Cheers man. Yeah, it would be cool to see how Barkers signature changes over time - like King's - and how it could be pinned to a time period. My guess is that these are very early sigs, as his later sig got really large and angular and sometimes just a "CBarker". These were also done at a UK signing, so, likely sometime before Barker moved to the US (pre 1991).

Cheers HBJ... I'm not sure whether Barker signed any upon publication, because they were released over a period of three years. I bought these and the previous W&N set from the same UK seller who was getting out of collecting, and he said these Spheres were signed on the same day at a UK signing.

I also had the Sub Press set for a few years and then sold it recently to get the W&N set. Sub Press did a lovely job but it disappointed me that only one of the books was signed in that set (I know that's usual for multi book sets, but still..) and that they used the same W&N artwork. So, I thought I'd just grab the firsts all signed...

While I'm not collecting ephemera, here's one I couldn't resist. A postcard from Robert Bloch to Bruce Walker (a Florida artist). I'm not sure how they came in contact with one another, but they regularly corresponded since the 1970s, I'm told (their correspondence is held in the Indiana University). In this postcard Bloch appears to be in a deeply reflective mood as his own health preoccupies him. The postage stamp is Jan 19, 1991, three years before his death.

Great question, I have no idea. I'll see if I can find out...

I looked into this a bit, and the October date doesn't really line up with anything, specifically.

As Australia gets U.K. editions, neither the Grant edition of W&G (August), or the Plume edition (November) would have been readily available in a Dymocks store in Sydney. The S/L Hodder edition had been published at the same time as the Grant edition, but only 500 copies were done, and again, not readily available in Australia. The Hodder trade paperback wouldn't be published until November, I think - too early for this event.

So I can only think that this was a pre-publication promotional event for W&G for which there were no signings, or King was on holiday in Australia and agreed to do a reading event for the heck of it. Neither possibility seems very likely, to me.

ETA: well, shoot, a bit more Googling, and it turns out, both possibilities are right:

Tales From The Nightside by Charles L. Grant. US 1st published by Arkham House, in flawless, unread condition. Although there are surely others, it's the only copy I've seen that is signed both by Grant and King, at his introduction.

And no idea who the "Paul" is in the inscription - I've posted it here previously (I bought that one a year or so ago from a member Tippy) but not sure who the "Paul" is, or the story, but as King has signed it Steve, and it's specific, I'd say it's someone at least on the periphery of King's circle.

Antoni,
I took a look again at your collection again. Amazing. I noticed that the Gunslinger back jacket and spine are different on them. Is one the S\L and one a first ed? I need to put a pick up of my first because that's one I have never done.
But you have an amazing collection.
Cheers, Mike. I'm not exactly sure which photo you're referring to, but I do have a Gunslinger 1st and an SL, but they should have the same jackets..? Could be sun fade?

Amazing Misery`s, BIG CONGRATS Antoni !!!
Thanks Frank!

St. Troy - totally agree - makes for a nice and neat presentation.

Alec - also agree - entirely underrated series. In fact, they are the only Lettered editions I've succumbed to from ay publisher. They are truly limited to 26, in stark difference to the artist / gift edition. They really stand on their own.

I've been reading this forum off and on for a few hours and this is the post that made me register.
I was listening to "Alexander the Great" when I came upon this post.
Anyway, nice collection (a vast understatement). I've only read 2 Stephen King books - "Cycle of the Werewolf" and "Thinner" but a week ago I came across a picture of the first edition of "Cycle of the Werewolf" and thought it was beautiful so it got me intrigued about collecting Stephen King. I am currently a book collector; authors like Edward Abbey, Jim Harrison, Thomas McGuane, etc., mostly western American fiction.
I hope to possibly start collecting some Stephen King. But I'll have to smart small.
Cheers.

Ooph I've also been falling prey to this not incorrect way of framing my book purchases. I recently opened a box and thought to myself "this book is 1/2 of the new washer/dryer set we want" :arg:

I'm never going to stop collecting books, but I am definitely now considering how much joy a book will bring me relative to how much joy an equally expensive home improvement might bring...

Also my kids might want to go to college, but that's far enough off that it doesn't feel real yet. Hell, the fact that I'm going to have teenagers running around the house someday doesn't feel real yet.

Anyway - nice book! Sorry you have to let it go but at least there are lots of nice other ones there to help keep you company :)

Spot on - 100%. I also find my collecting interests change. I'm always going to collect books. While I may not want to keep a Lettered (and would rather buy a Weber 6 burner), I would still spend just as much for a King first with a super cool unique inscription!

Antoni, your comment that you would rather pay as much for a signed and inscribed 1st Edition resonates with me. I could not agree with you more. Still the heart of any collection, as far as my ideals go, is the signed 1st Edition. Lettereds and limiteds are beautiful things and naturally fall in place if your collection horizons encompass them, however for me, to find a wonderful condition signed 1st gives more satisfaction than simply waiting for the publisher to send through the letter or number that you are entitled to.
Good luck with your progress.

Good luck with your progress.Great topic, Antoni and Alec. Limited vs. the signed 1st:

Book Construction/production/art: no contest here. Advantage Limited

Odds of Legitimacy of signature: no contest here. LIMITED. Regardless of the opinions here I have yet to meet a handwriting expert. And outside of King it can be really tough.

The Hunt: edge to Signed 1st but most people that collect S/L are definately not "waiting for the publisher to send through the letter or number that you are entitled to". I wish. The hunt is definataly real for S/L (good price being the main factor)

History/story of the book: edge goes to 1st editions here due to age BUT does a 40 year old book in great condition have much of a history? I know Suntup is an exception but The History/story behind The Road Limited is probably better than the story behind many signed 1st

Rarity: Limited wins this one. Even a limitation of 3000 destroys print run of a 1st BUT obviously a great signed first can be more rare in some instances.

Will say this: An awesome inscription and signature from King as I watch him sign a 1st would be more valuable to me than any limited.

What did I leave out?

I also have an inscribed Authors copy of the S\L of DTII and an artist inscription with a re-marque as well in the S\L Green Mile. My S\L firestarter also has a small inscription and signed again by King. I would love to get a few more signed first ed as well. I think having a signed first is really neat to add to a collection. Thanks lotuz! Yes, that's so true. It's about getting the balance right between collecting goals, obligations and disposable income. Doing this home extension made me narrow my goals for now and surely the goals will move again in the future. I too have a couple of young kids (both in elementary school) and their future needs are going to make things a whole new ball game. And, all the while, I dream of retiring at around 60-years old (15 years away)...

Thanks, Alec. Yes - I feel very fortunate to have been able to be the custodian of a lettered edition, albeit for a short while. It was something I never thought I'd be able to do. And while I've sold all of my PS Lettered collections, I have kept the Thinner Lettered edition - that was my first and remains my favourite - Les Edwards' artwork is some of my favourite in any King edition.

Good analysis here... The only thing I would add: There is a "manufactured" rarity in the limited editions that doesn't quite match the organic rarity of the first edition (like a true antique, if that makes sense?).
