Okay, so I'm kind of toying with the thought of getting a DT tatt. I probably won't do it, but I like to think about it, nonetheless.

If you were going to have a DT tattoo, what would you choose, and why?

I have this on my right calf. It says Ka-Mai below it:

I don't think I will ever have a tattoo but if I did I would have one of my favourite sentences: "Stand and be true." and a little rose (the one Roland is keeping in his hand at the Tower) for it.

well i have a few tattoos already, and a DT one is definitely on the want list. I've been contemplating getting a friend of mine to draw a new version of the tower with the top ending in a rose(so all the balconies would look like thorns). Maybe adding a "drop" of blood to represent the crimson king.

I've already posted this in the general tattoo thread in The Dixie Pig, but here we go again.

My DT tattoo, obviously it's not finished yet, but it will be soon. The guns still need to be covered in and there will be a banner alolng the top saying "The Dark Tower" so people don't just think I really love Guns N' Roses.

Erin, that's really cool. I have Plato and Aristotle on my back and I've been trying to figure out how I could put something about the Dark Tower without taking away from the philosophers. Very cool tat.

Good idea. Or maybe just The Rose, as Jake first sees is it in The Waste Lands. A rose with suns in the center.

I have no tattoos myself but I know it will be a Tower one if/when I finally do. :)

This was what I was thinking would be my next, especially as we are naming our daughter Ella Rose. I thought it would be a nice way to get the Tower and part of her name into a single piece, and since we are using the name Rose bc we are both Tower junkies.:rose:

I think I may be breaking my wife down on the idea we name our first son either Lex or Fox. I think she would prefer Jake over those other two. :) Rose would be a cool name for a girl.

Hi guys,
So this thread is how I found this forum, I was doing research for my DT tattoo, I thought I had a fairly original idea, man I was so proud of myself  but hey people are right when they say most things have been thought of already!

http://www.bmeink.com/scal001.html

It's still beautiful and I'm still going to get it but I thought I'd have been unique, mine will be a lot smaller and just bellow my hairline on the back of my neck. When I get the cash together but this is my favourite tattoo of all time...

I just saw this....It actually didn't hurt too badly, meggmopp. The only parts that hurt a lot were the tips of the gun barrels on my shoulder bone and the middle area of the rose on my spine. It felt like a hot poker was tearing the skin. But the rest of it wasn't bad at all.

Also, I really love your son's tattoo! Very cool tower.

02-25-2008, 06:49 PM
Erin, did you ever finish yours?

My first two (not-DT) tattoos didn't hurt much, but the third one hurt like a bastard. Something to do with doing it on the ankle, I think.

Still thinking of a DT tattoo - I'm leaning towards the "unfound" symbols too, but can't decide where to put it. Or maybe a Ka symbol. Or maybe the symbol of the White.

You see my dilemma.

It depends on location, and your pain threshold mainly. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain, so I'm probably not a good barometer. :)

jayson
02-27-2008, 04:05 AM
it def depends on location. mine have ranged from excruciating to no pain at all depening on where they were.

ManOfWesternesse
02-27-2008, 04:26 AM
Have no tattoos myself, so I wouldn't know about the pain.
I did work at one time in England with 3 skinheads. One of them had a graveyard tattoed all accross the back of his head. Can just imagine the needle bouncing off your skull for multiple hours while that was being done! *shudder*

Telynn
02-28-2008, 08:30 PM
I know someone that has a lot of tattoes and he has one that is two snakes going up his upper arm. The tounge of one of the snakes ends right by his armpit. He said that one had him out of the chair a few times.

OchrisO
02-28-2008, 08:34 PM
The tattoo that I have on my arm didn't hurt at all, but the Ka symbol on my lower leg hurt like crazy.

in all seriousness, i would love to do a Dark Tower sleeve, or other large scale DT tattoo. i currently tattoo out of atlanta, but i travel to conventions all over the country, and i also have clients fly in regularly since flying into atlanta is so affordable. this story has been a huge part of my life for the last 15 years, and i feel that i have an obligation to express that. which means whomever the recipient is will most assuredly get one hell of a deal. if anyone on this site is interested, you can check my pedigree at http://www.allornothingtattoo.com or http://www.daveMFtedder.com

and you can bet your watch and warrant that as soon as i get a fish that bites, youll see the most incredible Dark Tower tattoo yet. hell, just click the link if you think im pulling your leg.

on a side note, i didnt pick up 5-7 until very recently because i was terrified that i would hate them, and unless the ending really proves to be the great mind-fuckaroo that ive heard rumors of, that might just be the case. i really think the ending is going to make it or break it for me, im not sure what i want to happen, but i love an upset.

so..... now that im roughly 600+ pages deep into book 7, right where roland is in the tet corp. and finds out about this link to insomnia. my question is, should i stop where im at and read insomnia? i dont wanna read part of the adventure after its already reached the clearing, if thats the case. basically what im asking is, does reading insomnia before finishing the series add to the mystery of the Dark Tower, and thus add to the fun? or is it a book that i could read as an afterthought to the series?

oh yea, im sure it goes without saying, no spoilers please

Erin
02-29-2008, 11:31 PM
Wow Dave! I really like your work.

I'm seriously considering getting a half-sleeve and my dad lives in Atlanta, so I'm down there several times a year as it's only a 5 hour drive for me here in Kentucky.

I bookmarked your website so I can get in touch with you down the line.

Also, to answer your question, I read the Dark Tower 1-7 and then read Insomnia. I quite enjoyed it that way and don't feel I missed much. But then again, I could understand someone else wanting to stop and read Insomnia so they would know exactly what was happening and would recognize characters/events. I think it just depends what type of person you are...if you'd rather be completely informed going into things, or if you don't mind finding out a bit more (not too much) later.

jayson
03-01-2008, 04:34 AM
Dave, firstly let me say that your ink work is awesome! i love tattoo art work and yours is spectacular.

as for Insomnia, I agree with Erin that you may as well finish out the DT books. I had read Insomnia before DT 5-7 but only bc 5-7 didn't exist yet at the time to be read. I don't think you will miss anything you "need" to know for the ending, nor will DT-7 spoil Insomnia for you. Personally, I was a bit distracted towards the end trying to fit something from Insomnia in to my view of where DT-7 was going. Without saying more, when you read Insomnia, you will see what I meant.

@ erin, thank for the compliment, a dark tower 1/2 sleeve would be awesome. i would love a little more room to breath, but i understand that not everyone can be heavily tattooed or have visible tattoos. i also have ALOT of clientel from kentucky since its such a short drive, and i usually subtract traveling expenses from the final price with my out of state clients.
if you're really serious, then it is best to contact me early as i am usually booked about 3-4 months in advance.
i am also a person who likes to be well informed, so chances are im going to go out and pick up insomnia this afternoon since my all day appointment canceled an hour before he was due today.

@ jayson, thank you for the kind words as well, i can see how one could become distracted trying to read between the lines of insomnia then immediately finish the The Dark Tower. and that is what im trying to avoid. but im also an obstinate bastard, so im likely to do the opposite of whatever is recommended. i just wish i knew for sure if the contents of insomnia are important to rolands quest for the Tower. if so, i will read, if not, i will probably never pick it up, save maybe as an audio book later down the line.

@ monte, is it a farce because its too upsetting for you to believe, or because it really makes no sense to the storyline.

so is the crimson king from insomnia a different incarnation from the one in the Dark Tower series, does the Tower have any relevance in insomnia other than the little boy painting a picture of roland and the crimson king trapped in the room at the top. and is the little boy supposed to be some other kind of metaphor for stephen king himself.

im sorry i have so many questions, i just dont want this story to wind up roont.

Brice
03-01-2008, 10:15 AM
Nothing will wind up roont. Nothing in Insomnia is neccessary to the DT really. There are some references and connections between the two, but both can be thoroughly enjoyed without the other.

I will suggest that at some point (before or after) you read Insomnia though. :)

so i picked up insomnia this afternoon and have put the Dark Tower down temporarily. if for no other reason than to merely extend the journey. its been many years since i first read "The man in black fled into the desert, and the gunslinger followed.", and im not all that anxious to reach the clearing at the end of this path.
i am excited to read some of the other threads on this site, and get different opinions of the series, but im terrified of spoilers, so they will have to wait.

roughly back on topic though, aside from the DT tattoos i want to do, ive also decided to do a series of DT paintings and possibly show them in NYC if i could find an understanding gallery. if anyone is interested in obtaining either i can be reached through my links in my previous post.

I would like to get my entire back done. I say that like it's a large area, but I'm tiny so it's not that big.
But yeah. I know a few things I want in it, but I'd like to find a good artist who has read the series so that they understand the books and the way things should flow. I haven't found anyone within 2 hours of here, so my next stop is Atlanta, GA when I have enough money.
In between now and then, I may get the Eld symbol, but done with scarification.

so they top with but with the gun and rose from the second.

i've been toying with the idea of the ka symbol and a rose on the pointer and middle finger on my right hand (palm side)...

but we'll see if i can get the guts to do it.
it would be my first tat, but i know i would REALLY love it.

dmft - When you do a tat, do you prefer someone to bring the design to you, or do you like it best when you yourself do the design?

For instance, say one of us wanted a DT piece, you know the story and all, how would you work up what to feature in the tattoo?

Just wondering. I've wanted a DT tattoo for the longest time.

I hva a nice collection of tatts already, and a few DT ones are on the list--actually, Erin's comes close to what I was considering for my shoulders (although they wouldn't be connected, just one pistol on each shoulder). The other would be 'Ves'Ka Gan' on the top of my wrist, somewhere I could always see it, especially while I was typing away chasing my muse-of-the moment.

The last...and perhaps the biggest jump into super-fandom would be a 3/4 sleeve of red roses. I may work something else into it...I've got a yr and a half before I am out of the Marine Corps and can follow the idea, then getting married shortly after, so I guess I have time to think on it.

i want a turtle tattoo so badly. on the inside of my wrist would be great. sadly, i'm not allowed to get one because of the medicine i'm on. . . . coumadin (blood thinner) makes any cut or puncture dangerous as hell and having a needle punched into your skin hundreds of times would probably be a bad idea.

i'm considering going off of it just long enough to have it done, then going back on it. really, who would have to know? :)

Um, why don't you check with the doctor - right up front - and ask about the medication and a tattoo specifically. There might be something you can take in place of ( rather than skipping, silly turtle ). Surely others on Coumadin have had tattoos?

OchrisO
06-04-2008, 05:55 PM
If you have a fear of needles, you shouldn't let that affect your tattoo p[lans, because it is quite another sort of needle all together, and it only barely breaks the skin. It has more in common sensation-wise with taking a thumb tack and dragging it across your skin than it does with any sort of needle puncture.

I think mostly it's a fear of a lot of pain. It's not like once it starts you can stop it. I mean, really, that would leave you with a partial tattoo!!!

I am diabetic, so the needles really don't bother me at this point. A thumb tack across the skin... gee, that sounds nice.

It depends on where you get them. The one on my back hurt pretty bad, because of my shoulder blade. The one on my arm didn't hurt too bad.

Ves'Ka Gan
06-04-2008, 06:38 PM
I fell alseep when my artist was doing the ones on my upper chest. The two on the back hurt, but more than anything, I was uncomfortable because the position I had to sit on.

My one peice of advice if you are afraid of pain is don't get it on your belly! I imagine a boob-tattoo would feel similar, but it is the single most unpleasant thing I've ever experienced.

Also--I hate needles. Getting blood drawn, or getting shots just weirds me out..but tattoos have never had thateffecct on me. I don't like needles under my skin...poking over & over I guess is different.

you admonished me for saying that i thought that a woman having her breasts tattooed was insane. you said that i was in the wrong thread, that all the people in this thread like ink, anywhere. so i asked the question. perhaps my choice of language was crude, and for that crudeness i sincerely say sorry if i offended you or anyone else, but that doesn't mean the overarching question is inappropriate.

don't admonish me, and tell me i'm in the wrong thread, and then tell me that all the people in this thread like ink, anywhere if you're not willing to stand up and be counted.

I'd get a tattoo on my cock if I found one that I actually wanted there. There's nothing that would stop me aside from that fact that it really isn't a very good canvas, and it would most likely have to be a self-done tattoo. What I mean though, is that, aside from that stuff, there's no sort of fear or pain issues that would keep me from doing it. *shrug*
I've also seen some wonderful tattoos on breasts as well. Two of my friends have awesome tattoos that start on their shoulders and extend down onto their breasts. They actually make for great canvas, and there's not really any issues with ink that would do anything like increase chances of breast cancer or cause problems breast feeding and such. It will most certainly hurt like a motherfucker, though. Chest tattoos are supposedly quite painful for both men and women.

Oh, and to turtlex: I'm also a diabetic. I'd advise not getting any tattoos on the lower parts of your legs, unless you want to deal with a big hassle, because of all the circulation issues and such. The Ka symbol that is tattooed on my lower leg(posted a pic of it freshly done on the first page) didn't heal very well and lost a lot of ink because of it, and will take several touch up sessions to fix, most likely, once I get around to it.

None of the women could describe him very well, but they all agreed that he had the letters "PE" tattooed on his penis.

After soem time, they caught the guy and the cop couldn't help but to ask why he had "PE" tattooed there. The guy told him it was supposed to say "PENIS" but it hurt to bad after the E so he made the tattoo artist stop!

OchrisO - Thanks for the advice. Good points all.

I was thinking maybe this summer, but the more I think about it - the more I just think that when the time is right, I'll know.

Everyone - Thanks for the info on "where it hurts" the most. I was thinking probably shoulder for the first one.

Honestly, I do carry a small print out of the TDT logo in my wallet - should I suddenly decide, and the feeling takes me.

Dave (mum's ex) said that the outline hurts more than the colouring, is this true? Should i bother getting a tattoo if i don't like pain?

well, i think the pain thing is completely personal. i have two. one is on my left shoulder blade and it didn't hurt at all. the other is on my right ankle and it hurt a little but not much. i've heard other people say that the ankle is the worst place for a tattoo, but i'm not sure why. maybe because of the bone being right there? i didn't notice a difference with either one between the outline and the coloring. it all felt the same; but mine are all one color and that might make a difference. maybe different colors feel different?

if you don't handle pain well, maybe it's not a good idea. but it would depend on the size, the number of colors, and whether it was done in stages or all at once i think. you might be surprised. when you reach 18, have dave try a tiny little spot somewhere it won't be seen and see if you can handle it. if you can't, you have your answer.

on a completely different subject:

i have a question for any tattoo artists that might be among us. someone told me once that in the us it's illegal to have a tattoo put on your hand (the top part, not the palm). is that true - something about the veins and stuff. but i want one on the inside of my wrist and i've seen people with those, so what's the difference?

Ves'Ka Gan
06-05-2008, 02:40 PM
I sincerely doubt it's illegal in general, but some states have weird tattoo laws. Up until a couple years ago tattooing was completely illegal in Oklahoma...so who knows?

As for the "should I even bother...if I don't like pain?" question...YES! YOU SHOULD!! Haha. Not all of them hurt that bad, for one. And two, I think the pain really instills a deep appreciation for the artwork. You don't go buy a tattoo, you earn one. As long as you're getting a tattoo that has meaning for you, it's worth it completely everytime.

And if you are one of those people who just loves ink in general, you probably think it's worth it even if it's not meanigul...as long as it looks good!

My tattoo artist was originally from Oklahoma and swore to never go back. He was of the opinion that any state willing to let girls marry at 13 (with parental consent) but wouldn't let an adult get a clean tattoo wasn't a state worth living in.

now maybe you can post a pic of yourself on the fottergraf thread?

I have a turtle on my back, and eventually I will get a rose with the words "Remember the face of your father."

Amazing ideas. Really. And I love your turtle. So unique.

No, I didn't design it. It was in a portfolio at the studio I went to.

turtlesong - for obvious reasons, i too would like a turtle tattoo... but aside from abject fear, I have no reason not to get one. Someday. I'm looking and thinking of the perfect one. Some kind of DT/turtle combo, for sure.

Maybe something like this? Of course, more detail and a better turtle but something like this would be nice. Also you can have something like Dark Tower" or your favorite DT quote wrapped around it in a circle.......

just sayin'

bruno this rocks! it's very similar to somthing i've been thinking about. i'm not sure if i want a rose or what. it's so hard. plus, i'm still in the dreaming stage. . . .

i, too, put this into my images file if that's okay. :couple:

Reading this thread really makes me want to run out and get another one.....

In regards to pain, the one on my ankle hurt when he was doing the outline cause there were straight lines going right up the ligament.

I have a bracelet on my right wrist and it only hurt when he got near the bone, and it didn't even hurt that much.

The artist said he was impressed with the fact that I never even flinched when he did it.

I honestly think it just feels like a very strong vibration.

Nerak--

I agree. The only times it was uncomfortable for me was when it was right over bone. Granted, the one on my belly hurt like hell...but I think that should be expected from the area between the belly button and the hoo-ha.

turtlex, i found 2 different things I liked and combined them using Paint. Glad you like it. If you ever decided to get one for real I could design you one, I've designed a bunch of tattoo's for friends of mine.

I may actually take you up on this when I'm ready. I appreciate the offer. Very much.

Funny, I was also thinking of a bracelet sort of deal with a rose centered on the top, and on the reverse of my wrist, a turtle. The "band" would be like stems with thorns. That's an idea I've been tossing around.

Yeah, but if we did that, then we'd have 10 tattoo threads, all different ages. One might die out, then someone starts a new one, now everyone who posted in the old one feels compelled to repeat their original post over again.

Easier to just merge, IMHO.

So this is most of what i have done so far. Right now we are going back thru the whole thing to tighten it up and make it a little crisper. Then we shall start on the background. I think it will be more towers fading back. Kinda like the Tailsman and how there seem to be multiple towers, even though there is only the one true tower that binds all together. Trying to make it look good, have fun with it, and stay somewhat accurate to the facts. We will see how it turns out. My main concern was to have David, which is the beginning of the journey, and a cool looking tower to represent the end. Hope you like. Sorry if the picture is too small

Thanks Angelo. We loved the name before she was even born and now that she's here it seems even more perfect. I am planning to get some version of The Rose tattooed on me later this summer [my bday]. I'll post pics when I do.

Thanks Guys. I aim for everyone to like it, but I am only really worried about DT nuts like you all. Dont want to let anyone down. This series helped me get through my teenage years, and has been with me as I have moved around the country in my 20s. Whenever I start to lose sight of my tower, I just reach over and reunite with my old friends.

I must say that I am blown away by your responses. Thanks for giving a non-traditional tat some love :) . As for David, Rolands comming of age has always been a favorite section of the series. Dont really know why... And to give props to New England, Was in NH for a bit at the age of 9. Loved it there. I am carving a visit to NE again. Hoping for this fall... I must say that I envy the beauty you are surrounded by.

Who designed the Tower? It's fantastic!

Bumbler
07-02-2008, 11:36 AM
The tower is free hand from the artwork in Wizard and Glass. The top of the tower is kinda from the beach pic in Gunslinger and David is from the sketch in Gun, minus Roland. Because the Pictures are all different, I gave them to my tat artist and just told her to have fun with it.

bumping to the next page. I think the rose in David's mouth is a super idea. Would you keep the rose black or would you add the color of red?

Matt

I was considering suggesting around the bottom but in Davids mouth or talons is a great idea.

I know you can't see his feet well but it might still work.

Bumbler

The rose in the mouth might work. Like the talons even better. As you said, Matt, cant really see them. But I guess we could add them in. Maerlyn, I have not decided on black or white yet... just want it in there lol. Blackrose, thank you. Up to the point where the picture was taken, it never hurt much. This last session, we went back thru most of it with a deeper black and it was more painful.
