It's time! This thread will serve to nominate and discuss the tracks for the tournament that were released between January 1, 1945 and December 31, 1949. Keep in mind that your nomination must have been initially released within this time-frame. Singles can often be released earlier or later than the album, so double check things like Wikipedia. When nominating and seconding, please follow these guidelines:

You can nominate one track per post, and you can nominate another track after one other member has made their nomination (per thread).
You can second one track per post, and you can second another track after one other track has been seconded (per thread).
Each nomination should be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated.
The video must be the version of the track being nominated (so no live versions, covers, re-recordings, or remixes).

To reiterate from the announcement post (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?19369), to make a nomination, please use the following format: ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR). A nomination should also be supported by a video, illustrating the song being nominated (though not necessarily the song's official video, especially if it contains a lengthy pre-song scene). Most tracks can be found on YouTube, and that's preferred, but other video hosting services can be used, which can be embedded with your nomination. If you can't find your pick, send me a PM and I will try to locate it for you. However, please do not simply post a link or embed the video so it appears on the page. Since there will be lots of nominations per page and lots of videos, this will be too much to handle for most computers, slowing down the page tremendously. So to make your nomination, please hide the embedded video using the SPOIL tags (using this spoiler option: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/icons/spoiler.gif) Don't forget to remove the s in https when embedding YouTube links. Also, the youtu.be sharing shortcut will not work. We need the full address (just without the s in https).

All you need to do is first click the "Insert Video" icon: http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/images/editor/video.png. Paste your YouTube link, remove the s in https and click OK. The link should stay selected, so click the black SPOIL button, enter your ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR) into the field which appears, click OK, and you're done.

To illustrate, a sample nomination should look like this (and this track is not eligible, since it's from 2015):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo6Nr1VEml8

Or, simply use the below template (fill in the red placeholders):

ARTIST - TITLE (YEAR)"]

Yeah, I made a mistake... I thought the Dinah Shore version was much older but on checking, it was also released in 1948.

Is it too late to substitute the Gene Autry version for Dinah Shore's?

If I can swap the nominations around, the video is here:

Based on the following info from Wikipedia, I'm going with this version as a 1946 release:

"Babalú" was the signature song of the fictional television character Ricky Ricardo, played by Desi Arnaz in the television comedy series I Love Lucy, though it was already an established musical number for Arnaz in the 1940s as evidenced in the 1946 film short Desi Arnaz and His Orchestra. By the time Arnaz had adopted the song, it had become a Latin American music standard, associated mainly with Cuban singer Miguelito Valdés, who recorded one of its many versions. Arnaz made the song a rather popular cultural reference in the United States.

The record appears to have been actually released in 1947:

And I'll second it, as a big Lucy fan :)

After this is done and hopefully a big success, I don't see why we can't do 1940-1944 and 1935-1939 and so on. And later 2015-2019 :)

I'm not sure that's the right version. According to Discogs, it did come out in 1949: http://www.discogs.com/Edmundo-Ros-And-His-Rumba-Band-The-Wedding-Samba/release/2420685 But I'm not seeing Carmen Miranda with The Andrews Sisters anywhere. Here is this original version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID4x04UEg44

The Miranda/Andrews version must be from 1950 then: http://www.discogs.com/Andrews-Sisters-And-Carmen-Miranda-I-See-I-See-Asi-Asi-The-Wedding-Samba/release/1991887

It would have to be the year that particular version was originally released. It can be a little confusing with the older songs that had lots of covers, but it does seem The Ink Spots released that one in 1940. So when we do the 1940-1944 (eventually), that certainly should be nominated there. Unless there's a really good version of it from the second half of the '40s.

Interestingly, Johnny Cash covered it in 2002: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72CKEhHnLPk

Really happy to see The Andrews Sisters end up with the most nominations. They are probably my favorite 1930s-'40s artists. I could've nominated a few more of their songs here and I do have one more from 1950 still to nominate.
