I know he only has one book, but he seems to be a popular author here amongst those that have read The Martian and there are two (that I know of) collectible editions of the book and a movie due out this fall. With that said, here's my Andy Weir collection so far. I also have a lettered and limited edition on preorder from SP; will add pictures of those when the eventually arrive.

Love the books Joe!

Unrelated, but I think this is the original PDF Andy Weir released when fans were asking for something they could put on an eReader. I haven't read it, so not sure how much it differs (if at all) from the published book. Thought I'd share in case anyone was looking for a copy.

Nice books. I just have a s/l coming from sub press. Gotta thank Shac for letting me know Andy will be out west later in the year - October 29th - right around the movie release. It's only a short 110 minute drive - but I've already taken the day off (and the next day) - already called and placed an rsvp. Also managed to get an unsigned 1/1 - on its way. So I'm psyched that I'll get to meet him and have my book signed. I've tried to get the UK s/n - but too late on that train.

I subscribed to same newsletter:

Looks like only 3 events listed for this year and 1 early next. Also he seems to be pretty active on his Facebook page. Although I hate most forms of social media and stay off the "look at me sites" - see what I've been dong, does that make you feel any better or worse about your life? Come on let's be friends...sorry don't know what got into me (yes I do).

The lettered edition sold out almost instantly, but as you saw, the s/l is still available. They released the cover the other day.

And here is why I tend to believe that score... The book/ movie feels like you can tell what is going to happen from start to finish.... No surprises or twists... I could be wrong but that's what I see... Hence why I asked.

I will say I did enjoy it in a way. The book however was similar to watching Macgyver. My biggest issue was most off the characters had the same voice. They all sounded and shared too many similarities with the protagonist.

I give it a 9. I loved all of the technical discussions of figuring out how to try to survive. The book had no fluff, no unnecessary romances, etc. I guess having a math background made it more enjoyable for me. And I think Matt Damon is a perfect choice for the movie. He's gonna be great.

I enjoyed it. I think it will be a hit.

Science is significantly "dumbed down" to make it more accessible to the average audience goer. I am very glad I read the book before the film. (because I really enjoyed the science)

I agree - reading the book first was definitely better - put things in a lot better context; you felt his struggle a lot more throughout the book - and they had to take out several important aspects (at least in the book - but I saw the necessity to help the movie flow). The movie was enjoyable - I just liked the book a lot more.

It was a fun evening. Andy was very nice and engaging. The bookstore owners who ran the event were very nice. The whole purchasing ticket thing before hand was a bit odd - we all ended up getting everything signed. Looking back on it I didn't need to buy so many extra tickets - since they never held fast on the one ticket per item signed. But realistically there were only a handful of people with more than 1 book (can you guess who?).

The talk and q&a started around 6:30 - that lasted little over an hour - and the signing started at about 7:40. There were probably a little over 100 people there. Our group got our books signed early. I got all 5 books I needed to get signed (and purchased tickets for). The line went quickly (no posed photos). So patrick and I went to end of line (only two who went through twice) to get our extra 2 books each signed. They were cool about that. We were done by 8:15 - since by the time I said goodbye to everyone, got to the car and started on the 95 minute ride home - I was home just before 10.

Oh, and our little group was able to head over to a little Mexican place - had some nice food, beer and margarita's before the event; doors opened at 5:30 and we strolled in about 6:10 after food - and had plenty of seating. And there was a guy in the audience who let us all know that he was friends with buzz aldrin - and sent him an email during the talk - asking if he saw the movie - and got a reply - and let us all know - during the event.

Now just looking forward to the next local event, hoping it will be for The Fireman release somewhere in the city in the spring.

Oh, and there were no extras, nothing really from the bookstore or museum even talking or advertising for the event, just talk and signing - and that was plenty.

Good summary of the evening, Chad. What the heck was Jerome up to?

Chad had the unique idea of bringing the S/L's, so we both did, and I had the not-so-original idea to have Andy inscribe the book's opening line, so we did that too. I'll post a few book photos tonight too.

Long night, but I'm up and have my coffee, so I can relate a bit of yesterdays event.
The wife and I arrived a few hours early in Los Gatos. Had a chance to check out the venue and visit the bookstore that was sponsoring the event.
Patrick, Taunya, and Chad around 5pm. We went for a bite to eat at a local Mexican restaurant. Of course Patrick ordered an entire bottle of tequila:

Two posts up is a picture of Patrick, Chad, and myself.

Taunya, Patrick, and Chad:

We arrived at the venue about 20 minutes before the scheduled start time of 6:30 PM. The had a nice temporary setup in a small recently opened museum. As we were waiting for the event to begin, I was in the lobby and took a pic of the lady who owns the bookstore:

http://www.thedarktower.org/custom/images/1446219669-Lobby%20shot.JPG

I asked the man in the Tam hat when was Weir going to arrive. He turned around and said "I'm here right now, and will start in one minute". I managed to get a quick picture with him just before he took the stage:

Weir talked for a bit over 30 minutes then did another 30 minutes of Q&A before signing books.

I received my lettered of The Martian the other day. Thought I'd post pics since I probably won't have it for long... it's been listed on Ebay. The traycase is super cool, I just wish they would do a little more with the interiors of these editions - like some illustrations.

Yes, someone in Austria bought it for $995 and Ebay had a $5 flat fee special going, so that's why I listed it right away.

Alright if you have been watching the Ernest Cline thread you know that I am working on some designs for slip cases to that book and The Martian that will go to the S/L. I am going to post over here as well in case there is anyone who has the Martian but doesn't have RP1.

I am starting on the case now but as always need some input. As stated in the other thread we are limited to a 5.25" x 8" plate so it would have to be a spine only plate or a cover only plate. Most are leading towards a spine only so that is going to be what I work on. The next questions will be what font and do we want the words to go up and down or left and right. If up and down are the letters oriented at a 90 degree angle or normal up and down letters?

All input helps as well as who all would be interested in a case for the S/L The Martian?

Can you do something like the lettered case that I posted... I'm just not sure what font it is. I was able to find the RP1 font but not this one yet. And of course I've got my fingers crossed for holographic foil. I think SP did a two foil process to create that shadow effect which looks cool. Maybe try to emulate that look and typeset similar to the SP spine?

Just an update Jeff and I have been going back and forth for a few days now on the plates. For some reason on my computer is shows one size then when I print it it prints bigger. No big deal just don't trust computer rulers. The fun part was when I sent it to him and he printed it we got another size still. We have figured stuff out and it should be going off to the plate makers today.

becca69
04-20-2016, 06:14 AM
What program do you use? If you have Illustrator or a vector based program, that is extremely accurate.

(I'm just guessing that maybe the DPI is a factor in the size discrepancy if you are using a photo editing program?)

jsmcmullen92
04-20-2016, 07:04 AM
I am glad you said that. I was going crazy trying to explain the DPI differences to Jeff lol. I use a freeware called InkScape that is great for vectors but Jeff usually needs it in PDF form so on the conversion it requires a DPI and I just leave it default. Then opening in Adobe caused skew issues (I think there was an error in the Font download) but if I opened in my browser it looked just fine. I think the size issues came mostly from me printing on an industrial printer with Jeff probably on a home printer (different DPIs). Sorry that was really nerdy...

In the end no matter where we printed the image help the correct ratio and still fit on both cases for the trade and S/L so we are good to go! Plates should be back in 3 days then he will send me the test fit cases and afterward all will be ready for order. So hopefully by the 1st we should have everything ready for order.

becca69
04-20-2016, 07:06 AM
Just for the skew issue... if you convert to outlines and then make your PDF, that shouldn't happen.

It was almost as it the vector was trying to compensate for getting larger by making the lines thicker which is usual but it only made some of them thicker and tapered them into thinner lines. Looked wonky

It all depends on the width of the book. Basically how thick is the spine I know Jeff confirmed it will work for the UK 1/1 so as long as the spine is greater than 1 1/8 I think then you are good to go. When we are ready you can email just saying you want this plate on a case and send him the dimensions of the book and he will make it.

Here is the test cases from Jeff. One they make it across the pond and I can confirm fit they will be open to orders. The Red with White/Yellow is one that he made for himself to fit the UK 1/1 of the book. If you want different color combos feel free to shoot an email to him at time of order with what you are looking for.

Three payments of $44.
RP1 is three payments of $33 for a book the same size (per Easton's specs on the order pages).

Do you suppose the price differential is so they can pay Weir significantly more given the popularity of his book?
Or is this a business decision by Easton to get a larger margin due to THE MARTIAN's popularity?
Or do you think it's due to other factors, such as print run and related economy of scale factors?

There was a pre-sale last week for those who already had numbered/lettered editions, so I assume most of those folks renewed before the public sale opened.

If anyone comes across an early printing (doesn't have to be a 1st) of The Martian with a nice dust jacket with the $24 price, I'm in need of a dust jacket upgrade for a signed 1st. My book is in great condition, but somehow the dust jacket isn't.

Tommy

I noticed at B&N yesterday that some copies of Artemis have glossy dust jackets and some have matte finishes. I've noticed this over the years with a few other titles by different authors as well. Does anyone know if this a mistake or on purpose? If it is on purpose, what's the reasoning behind it?

I must check that out. I know B&N also had or will have signed copies.

It could be that the publisher liked both finishes so released both. I’ve seen that with the jacket design before but not the finish.

Or they could have multiple printers. (Or didn't print enough dust jackets and went back to press with a different or cheaper treatment).

That too. Wonder if it’s the book club jacket. I don’t know what finish mine is but I’m pretty sure it has raised letters on the jacket. If the other finish is flat then the cheaper alternative makes sense.

So has anyone else finished reading Artemis? No spoilers here....

My only comment would be - was this book written by the same person who wrote The Martian? If Artemis had been his first book, I would never read another one by him again. The plot was OK, but the main character was annoying as hell. It seemed very juvenile to me.

Maybe it will be a sophomore slump and his next book will be better.

The reviews I've read have not been kind, but I'm still looking forward to giving it a chance. I have a signed 1st of it...went tonight to an interview of (by Neal Stephenson) and signing by Weir here in Seattle a couple nights ago...Weir was funny and personable. Place was packed -- other than King, by far the most folks I've seen at a signing. So if it's a dud, there're going to be a lot of disappointed folks.

I enjoyed it as well, generally speaking. It was certainly not as good as THE MARTIAN, as most if not all reviews/posts have argued, but if the previous novel was a 8.5, I'd still give this one a solid 7. I do understand and appreciate some of the criticisms leveled against it, but I don't see them to the degree that some others have suggested. Recommended.

Would anyone be interested in a straight-across trade of my Fine/Fine (as-new) signed/#d (1/1000) UK HC of the MARTIAN for your Fine/Fine (as-new) signed/#d (1/750) U.S. (Sub Press) HC of THE MARTIAN? eBay sales and ABE listings suggest the values are fundamentally the same so not looking to offer or request add'l cash...just a straight swap. If there's any incentive, I suppose the fact that the UK S/L came before the Sub Press is a plus, as it means that my UK S/L is the first limited of THE MARTIAN (and, for that matter, the first Weir limited).

Reason: I have the Sub Press S/L HC of ARTEMIS on its way to me, and the art of each matches/complements each other much better than the UK S/L would.
