How much was your ticket, dags?

Only 4 months! :excited:

Daghain

Airfare for 2 was $300. We're flying the small local airline.

Will and I are here if you need or want to ship anything before you arrive. Will just got finished cleaning and rearranging the garage so there's plenty of room for whatever. And we aren't going anywhere so the option is open if you need us for storage.

We live about 15-20 minutes from the strip in the newer southwest side of town...so it no problem to get anything from our house to the strip fast.
I just might take you up on that-for stemware, beer, and champagne wouldn't last long in a warm garage. I'll be in contact via PM shortly.
Thanks.

Well we do have closets inside the cool and airconditioned house that could temporarily house alcohol. Provided it's not a warehouse load. And you don't have to worry about me getting into the hooch cause I'm preggers and not drinking and Will doesn't drink anyway.

Hey, for those of you who haven't booked a room, there's always the Golden Nugget downtown attached to the Freemont Experience. Go old school...if the weather is nice they have an AWESOME pool that has a slide through a shark tank. They've totally redone all of their rooms so they are nice. And it's cheaper than staying on the strip.

Will and I are thinking about getting a room there in about a week for the weekend cause they are running a super special for $59-99 a night.

Of course you'll have to pay cab fare to get to the Strip, but it's a good alternative for a cheaper route.

Just throwing that out there.

Check out their website at goldennugget.com for more info.

Thank you for that, She-Oy.

So my cousin went to Vegas this past weekend with his gf, and based on what he told me about the gas money, traffic, and heat, I think I might end up driving to Vegas. And if this is the case, then maybe I can take a few supplies with me.

I am trying to figure out what show to go to.
Some of the ones I'm looking at are:

Blue Man Group (http://shop.vegas.com/shows/showtimes2.jsp?show=12)
KÀ Cirque du Soleil (http://shop.vegas.com/shows/showtimes2.jsp?show=727)
Le Rêve (http://shop.vegas.com/shows/showtimes2.jsp?show=764)

Any thoughts or advice?

Daghain
07-07-2008, 09:27 AM
Blue Man Group. Definitely.

Ka was okay, but Mystere was by far a better show. I haven't seen the third one.

I was going to get tickets to O until I had to shell out all this cash for my car. Grrrrrr.

Randall Flagg
07-07-2008, 09:31 AM
I was leaning towards Le Rêve as they have a package called The Champagne Circle:

It also facilitated the creation of the Strip's first ever bottle-service VIP theater seats. Dubbed the Champagne Circle, these seats are only available as part of a special VIP Indulgence package. Guests seated in them enjoy complimentary Perrier-Jouët champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries, plush lounge seating and the ultimate insider's look at Le Rêve a video screen that shows behind-the-scenes, underwater and overhead shots before and during the show.

Sounds kind of cool, and my wife loves Perrier-Jouët champagne.
Blue Man does sound awfully tempting.

Blue Man was freaking hilarious. I totally loved it.

We still haven't seen KA, but we want to. I've also heard that Love is awesome even if you aren't a Beatles fans.

I saw O years ago, and I've never seen anything as super fabulous as that since.

Not to get people's hopes up....but I am going to try like hell to get Jae Lee to spend a little time with our group. He is in Vegas now and he told me to contact him if ever I was coming to Vegas. Little did he know that it would be so soon!

Picking Jae's brain on the Dark Tower would be tres cool for everyone. I will see if he is amenable to joining our group, at least for a short while.

Sweet. I'll do a formal headcount in September. :)

wizardsrainbow
07-09-2008, 09:29 AM
I just made my reservations....

I am arriving from NYC Friday morning and departing very very early Sunday morning. Funny thing with flights to the Northeast from Las Vegas, either you have to leave at the crack of dawn or late in the day (red-eye flight). The few flights that leave middle of the day are way expensive and usually involve a stop with a long layover.:arg:

For those of you that still have to pick a place to stay, I did an extensive search all morning on the Internet looking at Obitz.com, kayak.com and about 20 other such discount-type sites. Vegas on the weekend is expensive no matter how you slice or dice it. I wanted something on the Vegas Strip (which is in fact quite long end to end...3-3.5 miles maybe) and I was searching by cheapest (and decent quality). I ended up at Harrah's for $160 a night. Harrah's is dead center ogf the strip, not far from Monte Carlo where Jerome & lovely wife will be and Bally's (forget who booked there).

Cheaper places I rejected were:

Imperial Palace (central and next to Harrah's): $130/ nite on Obitz.com rejected cause of reviewers saying the whole place was smoky and a bit run down

Sahara (way at end of strip): $110/night cause too far away from everything

Stratosphere (past the Sahara): $100/night cause too far away

Circus Circus (towards the far end, not as far out as Sahara): $110/night cause of bad reviews regarding noise, service etc.

Good luck people. Double or triple up if you are able to save costs.

I just e-mailed Jae Lee and outlined the weekend for him and put in a personal request that he meet you all while we are there.

No promises, of course.

Sometimes it takes him a couple months before he replies, so be patient please.

Very cool Wiz. You are only ~4,000' from our hotel. Probably only a $10 cab ride:doh:

sarah
07-09-2008, 04:27 PM
My hubby was in Vegas in March and he said the cab ride from the airport to Treasure Island was $22. Maybe we could coordinate some of us at the airport to share the ride.

I'm for sure going to be staying at the Monte Carlo. I haven't booked yet but that is where I'll be planting my feet. First comes the cocktails then comes the pool. Party on wayne, party on garth.

and I'm bringing my Gunslinger Born Hardcover for you all to sign. :D

Randall Flagg
07-09-2008, 05:15 PM
I'd like some feedback now as we get closer.

Is a cocktail social in a room, (mine, I did get a larger room on purpose) the best thing for both nights? It certainly would be cheaper and more intimate than a bar.
If so, I was thinking 5pm-8+ish on Friday and 5pm-7pm on Saturday (I wanted to go to a show Saturday, and my wife and Father in-law would need a little time to prepare and travel.)
Obviously additional get togethers can/will be scheduled, but this is just a feeler to see what others think.

Daghain
07-09-2008, 07:16 PM
That sounds great. I'll even chip in some beer and whatnot. :)

Maybe some of us can get together on Saturday afternoon and play poker. The Luxor and Excalibur have "beginner" lessons at around 1-2pm, and then it's a $20 buy in and a $1/$2 table. You can come and go as you please, and it's cheap. Or, if enough people were interested, we might be able to arrange our own "regular" table in one of the poker rooms.

Cutter
07-10-2008, 06:35 AM
I would be interested in coming. I mostly hang out on the collectors site, and I see Wiz has signed up. I was wondering if anyone else from the collectors site knows about this. I have a feeling most don't as they don't usually visit other parts of the site. Maybe a heads up on other portions of the site might get others involved.

Anyway, I also have to say I'm confused. I haven't read through all 22 pages, and not sure when I'll get the time to do that. Are there any plans or structure of anything set yet, that I could look at?

Thanks in advance!

Randall Flagg

We are just now trying to firm up two Cocktail socials, as well as other activities (it isn't a Convention so there are no formal events)-one or both likely to be held in my hotel suite. Both starting ~5pm and ending???

I will post a notice in the collector area-good suggestion.

That would be SWEET if you could come.

Jerome, I'm cool with the two receptions in your room as well as the times. Loose and easy is the ticket for me. I plan on gambling around the area in addition to hanging with people from the site.

Daghain's idea of introductory poker is a really great idea with low stakes to boot! I know how to play poker, but would be intimidated playing in a casino. Roulette and blackjack are my games of choice.

fernandito
07-10-2008, 07:30 AM
Umm, is there anyone else here besides me that has no idea how to play poker?

Daghain
07-10-2008, 07:33 AM
They teach you the basics. If there's enough of us, we could take over the table. And at $1/$2, if you play conservatively you can basically drink free all afternoon.

Hannah
07-10-2008, 10:29 AM
I plan on not gambling at all. Maybe like, slots or blackjack. Maybe.

I know of one other person that might be coming, but I'm not for sure so I guess I'll wait until I know for sure until I say something.

Thanks Wiz, I'm not going to say for sure until I get the airline tickets and hotel room. But I will start researching that soon. It's been over 10 years since I've been to Vegas, and the excuse of hanging out with other SK fans, why not? :)

fernandito
07-10-2008, 01:06 PM
I just got off the phone with my cousin, and he told me that he made it to Vegas on a full tank (he filled up here before he left). So yiyay! Road trip for sure!

He also told me that he has the hookup at the Hooters Hotel - he paid $189 for three nights there, and he says he might be able to hook me up as well. I'm not sure if I'll stay there or not, but its definitely something to reconsider

I realize I probably came across as boastful....sorry not my intent. :nope: I am just lucky and fortunate to know them. I live in CT and work in NYC. Just before Gunslinger Born came out, I Googled Jae Lee and found his e-mail on the Net so I e-mailed him about the potential sale of his artwork. For whatever reason, he took a personal interest in me and we developed a friendly relationship to the point that he stopped by my office twice to sign a bunch of comics and I visited him at his place once. The relationship has continued despite his recent move from NYC to Vegas.

As for Michael Whelan, I had purchased a couple of prints from him in early 2005 and then I met him and his wife Audrey Price at Palavercon in August 2005. They live 35 minutes from my home in CT. I own a bunch of the remarques he did in the DT VII Artists Editions and really am in love with his work. Over the last three years our relationship and friendship have really bloomed, and I am pretty close to them. Mostly being in the right place at the right time and then investing in building the relationship.

Matt
07-11-2008, 11:54 AM
pfft--you didn't sound boastful at all David. Sounds to me like you went the extra steps to make contact and are the type of person that people love knowing.

I knew that before we met in DC and was made even more sure at the time. One of the most un assuming and nice people I have ever met.

For me, I feel privileged that the site (and me personally) have you around to know and draw knowledge from.

It would be incredible if Jae Lee could show up to the gathering.

If you ever head out East, look me up and if there is time, I can always try to arrange a meeting. Michael is a very busy guy and keeps strange hours, but is one of the most down-to-earth individuals I have ever met.

On your other point....Dragonriders of Pern....I was shocked at how many book covers Michael has done artwork for. I went into my son's room and he had 4 or 5 books with Whelan cover art and he (my son) had no idea.

We are going to get there late Thursday night so we're available as people come in.

Friday night is going to be party time in Jerome's suite, that is when everyone is there I think.

Saturday night is going to be a mixed fare. Jerome will be gone to a show with his family but I promised to man his room for him in case anyone wants to come by.

We can't afford a show or anything so maybe we could do a little walk along the strip or something.

Just to clarify, I have a room (In The Monte Carlo) that is a small suite, and it has 1.5 bathrooms. The hope was we could have a party in my room on Friday starting at 5pm-lasting till who knows......
On Saturday I told Matt we could have another cocktail party in my room, but that my wife, father in-law and myself have a show @7pm, and will be gone for several hours. Matt will have a key to the room and people can come and go as they please. I'll be back Saturday ~11pm and the "hospitality" room will close Saturday ~midnight. This is all flexible, but the idea was it would be more intimate-and cheaper to party in a reasonably sized room than in a crowded expensive bar.
Woo Hoo! Can't wait.
As we get really close to the event, It would be best for all who wish, to share their cell phone numbers so we can text/call each other.

I just got off the phone with Albert Moy (Jae Lee's art dealer) and it turns out he may be in Vegas the same dates as the gathering (basically he has tentatively plans but if the Mets are still in the running he won't be going). He of course would be seeing Jae and indicated we may be able to all get together and he would probably bring some available pages. Patrick
09-23-2008, 04:42 PM
 Thanks, Gretchen. The 7am flight was actually my choice, believe it or not. I want to get home early enough to have the day with my family:

First there was this:
Hey RF, add me to the "Maybe" list. :)Then there was this:
Hi Guys,
I'm sorry to say that I won't be attending the gathering. My apologies.

I have an opportunity to visit China for the first time. It is my first chance and by all reckoning will be my only chance for a long, long time to come. Anyone who knows how much I love international travel (and how little of it I do) will understand. Unfortunately the trip begins before, and ends after, the gathering in Vegas. I'm sad to miss the group, and it is most certainly my loss, so I hope to make the next one in 2009.

- PatrickThen this:
... I've got a scheduling conflict in that I'm leaving for China on the Wednesday after the Vegas weekend. I was originally supposed to be gone during the .com weekend, but I had an opportunity to delay the trip a week, so I took it - on the off-chance that I might win the lottery and be able to afford both.

Going for a weekend in Vegas and then coming home for only two days (and working them), and then leaving for nine more days just doesn't work.I never won the lotto, but I'm coming to Vegas because my wife rocks. She's the one who has to carry the parenting load in my absence.

So, anyway, that's why I'll be getting up gawdawfully early on Sunday morning, if I go to bed at all. It's a short flight to San Jose and relatively short drive home. I should be pulling into my driveway about 9am.

Daghain

Wiz and I are talking about splitting a room. Hopefully we can move it to the Monte Carlo (rather than Harrah's) since that's where most people are staying, but it'll depend on whether his existing reservation is cancellable.

Wiz also has an early flight out, so really Gretchen is right. We should probably only book a room for Friday night/Saturday morning and just assume that we're not going to bed on Saturday night.

Patrick, that is so much the mirror of my own situation that it's truely scary! Only I will walk in my own door at home at roughly 5pm having left at the same time you do and a direct flight no less to NYC. :o I lose 3 hours time difference.

Patrick!!! You know we're going to have to pound some Jose Cuervo and sing Vicente Fernandez songs loud and obnoxiously, right?

damn feev, nothing makes me want to go as badly as this post of yours.......

Patrick
09-24-2008, 09:03 AM
Thanks, Wiz and OTB. I'm really looking forward to meeting you guys as well.

Any update on Jae's availability that weekend?

Wiz, you can shorten your trip considerably if you simply fly west instead of east.

:wtf: Hooters Hotel?! Awesome, Feev.

So, Matt, are you bringing the mezcal?
Is Hannah road-tripping out with you and Dora?

When does Erin arrive/depart?

These questions need answers.

Matt
09-24-2008, 09:06 AM
So, Matt, are you bringing the mezcal?
Is Hannah road-tripping out with you and Dora?

I think if there was ever a reason to score a bottle, this is it! I will get one ordered and bring it for sure.

And yes, Hannah is roadtripping with me and Dora out there. We're really looking forward to all the time together. One evening is seldom enough, the only thing that would make it better is if Aaron was there.

fernandito
09-24-2008, 09:08 AM
You forgot one, Patrick:

How to kill Superman?

Patrick
09-24-2008, 09:18 AM
Yeah, I reviewed the thread and realized that Aaron can't make it - that's a bummer. Oh well, we'll raise a toast to him - and everyone else for that matter.

Feev:  That should have been top of the list.

Hannah

Stupid high school reunion. :(

I think I already put this out here, but since I know that Boehmke will probably never remember to pop in and give his info: he's arriving Friday at noon, leaving Sunday morning-ish. Staying at the Monte Carlo.

Patrick
09-24-2008, 09:23 AM
Understandable about the reunion.

Cool that Boehmke will be there.

So what's the story on some of the more local people? Are they going to join us?
She-Oy? Rjeso? etc.

fernandito
09-24-2008, 09:28 AM
Laura mentioned earlier in the thread that she was going to stop by... I don't know if anything has changed since then.

Laura?

sarah
09-24-2008, 09:43 AM
She-oy is expecting a baby any moment so I don't know if she'll be able to stop by.

Patrick
09-24-2008, 09:47 AM
:o I had no idea, I'm so out of the loop. Good luck and congratulations to she and Will!

Rjeso
09-24-2008, 11:15 AM
Yeah, I'll be swinging by fo' sho.' :D

Also, of course Feev's choice of accommodations is the Hooters hotel. Would we expect ought else? Have fun with that, dude. :P

Hannah

Matt
09-25-2008, 06:38 AM
Me too, I'll send Dora's number (the one we take places) out to everyone on the list.

Daghain

How about we all PM them to one person, then he/she can make a list and send it out to everyone?

Matt

I would be happy to gather them if you guys want to do it that way.

Hannah

Matt
