Amanda, I was just thinking the same thing. It makes me feel like I'm a slacker.

Then again, some people may read more than they watch TV, movies, write, etc.

fernandito

Precisely. TV shows alone are a HUGE time commitment, possibly even more than novels.

Many shows are around 6 seasons, 10-13 episodes a season, about 50 minutes each... you're looking at anywhere from a 50-70 hour commitment!

Very true.
Like I said, 3 books before February is substantial for me!

Yeah, committing to a tv show, especially binge-watching, will take up most of your life. When I do (rarely) get addicted to a tv show, I don't get any reading done at all.

TV shows are almost single handedly responsible for me not having had productive reading years these past 2-3 years. I'm not even finished with one when I've already started another.

3. Doctor Sleep - Stephen King
4. Revival - Stephen King (currently reading)

Same here. Haven't got much reading done the past couple of years at all. I'm aiming to change that this year, though. A book a week, even if one of those books is either really short or a graphic novel.

I highly, highly, highly recommend his Wayward Pines series. It's excellent. I read them a few months ago, and that's what turned me into a fan. They're actually going to be making a series out of it, which I want to say is going to premier later this spring or summer. Also I'm really enjoying Abandon. Only a little more than halfway through at the moment. I'd pass on Eerie though. He co-wrote it with his brother, but it was just kinda blah.

Abandon sounds very Phantoms-ish.

I've never read Phantoms so I can't compare, but I just looked up the synopsis. Sounds a little similar, but only in the fact of an abandoned town. I've heard good things about it though, maybe I'll add it to my list.

Hey Shac, have you read Joe Hill's 20th Century Ghosts? I'd add that to your list of must reads!

Thanks John - I'll defintly add this to my 2015 read list. The above are the book I already read :)

Ah, got it, misread your first post!

Heather, I love Blake as well! I haven't read that much of him so far but I do know that his work with JA Konrath, namely Serial Killers Uncut, is some deeply disturbing stuff, if you are feeling brave, give that one a try

Needful Things is the next King I want to read. Is Cujo really that good? For some reason it's been one of the last ones on my list to read. And I read about 100-150 pages of The Talisman but couldn't get into it so I put it down :(

Cujo is decent, but not one of my favorites. I was just surprised because it's one of King's "classics."

But Needful Things is in my top 5. I love it.

I read Cujo when I was much younger, it was the first novel I read in one day, it's really dark, much darker than the movie and one of my personal favs, The Talisman is a tough nut to crack but once you get going it's pretty decent I'd say

These are a few of my most favorite King books. I've read Dead Zone a few times. :)

Also, I wish that I could forget everything I remember about the movie version of Misery so that I could read the book. :orely:

Good thing is that it's been forever since I've seen it, so all I had in my head was Kathy and James as the characters, which they worked good as. I want to rewatch the movie now. Also on a semi-related note, I think this is part of the problem I had when reading The Stand. All I could picture were the actors from the miniseries, most of which I didn't care for at all.

I remember having a hard time really getting into The Talisman at first (I blame Peter Straub's ability to drone on and on about useless details). But, when I finally hit a certain mark within the book, I was hooked. It's one of my favorite King books now.

No, Damned was better... I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads but others weren't so kind. It's written in the form of a blog and Madison is even more annoying, if that's possible. I didn't hate it but it was far from love.

Eh, it was ok, but I had one huge pet peeve with it that affected my enjoyment of the book. So in the beginning Ruthie returns home one night to find her mom missing. But instead of contacting the police she just decides to play house with her sister and then eventually track down her mom on her own. It just didn't make sense. Aside from that the rest of the story was interesting. It was told from the point of view of three different women, and jumped around between them, but every time it got to present day with Ruthie and her sister, everything they did from that first moment on didn't really make sense to me. I just kept thinking why don't you call the police  I'd give it maybe a 2.5/5

And I really liked that it was left open for continuation.

I liked it too (it reminded me of the epilogue to The Talisman...or Black House. I can't remember).

I think that it would've been a little more plausible if it weren't such a long amount of time though. It took awhile for me to accept the 2,000 years in the future thing, so 70,000 years was kind of a stretch for me.

1. I can see what you mean about the time frame being a stretch in the epilogue, but it didn't bother me. I won't lie though, when I first even found out about it being the future, I was having a hard time understanding the time frame(s) of when Ethan first ended up in Pines, and when Theresa/Ben were taken there, etc. I was asking my mom about it since she read it before me, and she was like "I tried not to think too much about it because it got confusing trying to analyze it. i just went with it."

2. It was hard to get through! And I remember you told me to finish it because it was short, and then I realized that I actually had about 150 pages left. I couldn't do it, man. I couldn't. haha

I really enjoyed it. I listened to the audio book, and I have to say when it comes to audiobooks, it was probably the most well done one I've heard. It was narrated by both a man and woman so it was easy to follow, and you didn't have the person trying to imitate the opposite sex which can sometimes be annoying  I'd recommend checking it out.

Well Ethan was taken by Pilcher, and then Theresa and Ben were taken after. And then Hassler decided to go after that. I can't remember but I think he went with Pilcher and all them right, which might have been a few years later? I can't quite remember it's been awhile since I read it.

As for when they woke up in Pines I'm pretty sure Theresa and Ben were woken up first with Hassler, and then Hassler was sent off outside the wall, which is when Ethan was taken out of suspension. However if I remember correctly he was put back into suspension a few times because he didn't do well when he came out.

1. I never listen to audiobooks (I tried once and found myself not paying attention), but the thought of a man/woman speaking for a character of the opposite sex does sound like it would be annoying and/or distracting.

2. I wanted to get through The Long Walk so bad! In fact, I kept thinking: "If I don't finish this book, I'm gonna have to admit to it on DT, and Heather is gonna be so disappointed".

3. Yeah, as the story went on, I was able to figure out the timeline like you described. And you're right about Ethan being put into suspension a few times. Pilcher told Ethan that he tried to escape three times. I thought that was a nice little touch to the story. Ethan was a badass.

"They're all gonna laugh at you!"

And I don't think I would be able to really pay attention to an audiobook. I think it's too passive for me. I need to be actually reading the words to be fully engrossed.

And I feel the same about the audiobook. I was listening to one, and a few minutes went by before I realized that I wasn't even paying attention to what was going on because I wasn't having to concentrate on the words.

Well I was contemplating having to end our friendship...

As for audiobooks, I usually reserve them for books that I wouldn't get to reading. If it's one I really want to read then I have to read it, I could never listen to the audio. But for all those books that I wouldn't normally have time to read, I'll listen to them. Plus I have a crazy long commute to work so it's perfect for that.

How'd you like Before I Go to Sleep? I read it a couple months ago in anticipation of the movie, but still haven't seen the movie.

Also, the author's second book just came out.

It was ok, I liked it well enough, but it did go a little slow for me. I'll have to look up his next one. Also the movie is streaming on netflix, plan to watch it soon while the book is still fresh in my mind.

I really liked it.
For some reason, it felt like it got a bit slow near the middle, but picked up again closer to the end. I really liked the way it ended.

Also, that has to be THE most vague review ever.

It's decent. It's well-written, but the characters are kind of annoying sometimes. I think I've got about 100 pages left and things are just starting to happen.

Yeah, it's a great feeling. Hopefully, I'll be on plenty of lists....just hopefully not any 'worst of' lists lol

I read the review and it was great. Hoping it entices some doubters to give the book a shot. For me as the author, the review was just sentences after that first sentence, "This book really got to me" = Mission Accomplished. :D I liked how you mentioned how the book is about more than the horror and violence, but it's about the broken people inside of all that horror and violence, and all of the horror and violence inside of them, so Mission Accomplished x 2 :D :D I'm hoping book number two gets to you too, though it may get to you in the 'lying awake in the dark unable to fall asleep because of the nightmares' kind of way--it's really creepy :)

I'll have to look into costs soon to see what that entails. I am hoping I can make the digital copy successful enough I can find a publisher for book form.

It's possible. A few probably for sure. It's got a lot more of my nightmares and night terrors and dreams than anything else.

Nope, not at all. It was much better than book 2, but still a bit of a struggle to read. And the conclusion wasn't very good. You're best just leaving it with only reading the first.

I usually dont like to post my whole list over and over again, preferring to just edit the first post I made in the thread, but with completing my latest read I am up to 25!

This equals the number of books I read total in 2013 and 2014 COMBINED! And I have 3 and a half months to go! HUZZAH! Feels great to be reading (and listening) a lot more this year. :D

I have two Jack London hardcover collections...should I move White Fang up my list?

I thoroughly enjoyed White Fang. London's insight into the mind of a wolf is uncanny. I will never look at my dog the same. It was amazing. I've not yet read Call of the Wild, but it is short, and I expect to soon. So, a resounding YES, you should read it soon.

I am often amazed at the prodigious reading skills exhibited by posters in this thread.

I thank the thread for motivating me to read more and am happy to say I will complete reading/listening to over 40 books by the end of this year.
