Looking for any and all custom bound 'Salem's Lot books. Emphasis is on (but not limited to) the page blocks from the Centipede Press Signed Limited version done by Betts Books.

I

~September 2014 I saw a rebound (actually a first bound) copy of 'Salem's Lot selling on ebay (http://www.ebay.com) for a surprising amount. I already owned a burgundy spine version. The thought came to me to track down some if not all of the copies that Stu Tinker had bound; (as well as all other custom bound copies). There are numerous variations on what Stu had done (more to come later on that). I still am FAR from figuring out all of the iterations/permutations of the 24+1 copies Stu had bound. In addition, there are a few additional page blocks that have been bound by others.

II

A little history on the book blocks purchased by Stu Tinker (original owner of Betts Books):
Sometime in 2004 Stu Tinker purchased unbound page blocks from Jared Walters at Centipede Press. The blocks were from the Signed Limited version of Centipede’s ‘Salem’s Lot. Stu Tinker says he bought 29 page blocks from Centipede Press. One copy was bound by Gray Parrot (http://www.grayparrotbookbinder.com/) of Bangor Maine. Three-quarter bound in leather with a marbled cover, the book did not have the original art in it. Although magnificent, Stu felt the cost to have all remaining copies done by Parrot would not be economically feasible. Parrot’s cost was 2-3 times what the eventual binder’s quote was. Stu does not recall who the binder was that bound the other 24 copies, nor the issue price. He “thinks” the books sold for $150. Stu says four unbound blocks were sold to David Williamson as part of David’s acquisition of Betts Books.
24 blocks were bound. Most three-quarter bound in leather. 12 blocks had black leather spines and 12 had burgundy leather spines. It’s confirmed that at least two different colors were used for the fabric boards on the burgundy bound book. At least one burgundy bound book was fully bound in leather (and surprising had the artwork inserted in the correct places) but as of now it’s unknown how many, if any, other colors were used. Marbled endpapers were intentionally used “randomly” so that few if any books would be exactly the same. Additionally, several different color slipcases were used (red, grey and light brown have been confirmed-there may be more). To make things even more interesting, Stu stated to me that he chose to intentionally have the original artwork inserted in the books in incorrect order.
According to noted Stephen King collector Bob Jackson:
“The Gray Parrot edition has no illustrations at all but definitely uses the S/L text block. The pages are 13" tall and the thickness of the text block is 2 and 1/2".

Both the black and the burgundy Betts editions I have use S/L pages BUT they have been trimmed to 11 and 1/2" tall. It is easy to see that the top and bottom margins on each page are less on the Betts bound editions. Both the black and burgundy Betts editions have illustrations but they seem to be all over the place and randomly placed in the book. The placement of the illustrations is the same on both my black and burgundy editions but the placement is not even remotely similar to the placement in the S/L.”

The combination of two different spine colors, multiple board colors, random marbled endpaper usage, different color slipcases, and artwork often in incorrect order means that few IF any books are exactly the same!

III

In 2014 Betts Books current owner David Williamson and TheDarktower.org owner Jerome Smith collaborated to use Betts Books last two page blocks. These two were three-quarter bound in leather, with one being black leather and grey boards, and the other burgundy leather and red boards. Both copies have the correct 13” tall page blocks, and had the artwork inserted in the correct placement.

There is also the test binding\prototype That was done in leather black spine gray boards.

I agree, but the discussion is only alive in the forum. Once an article is posted in the Catalog, the discussion dies.

Thanks Bill!!!! He did mention that he thought Centipede created a book too grand but loved the story, of course Centipede did not make this one but only the page block. I told him I was Very grateful & excited to have this part of my collection signed. He was very nice to Glen, Dan & myself during the interaction. This made my year as we were all a little upset due to the change of schedule to say the least. As Glen mentioned in the other thread I think we made a great night out of it, or night & following day if your Jerome(well done).

The two biggest changes were:

Instead of offering pre-signed copies AND the opportunity to stand in line to see King (8pm-9pm) sign your personal copy of Revival (purchased at the venue), King pre-signed ~360 copies. There was no after-theater-presentation opportunity to have 8 seconds in front of King while he signed your specific copy and perhaps have a quick conversation with King. This change was at King's request/requirement.
At the VIP event, King spent only 30 minutes in a room with ~140 people. It started out fine, but there was a little lady (Jane) who began denying some folks photo opportunities, while leading King to people she personally knew (who had a photo op). She was rude enough to put her hand in front of people's cameras to ruin their photo. She was arbitrary, capricious, and malicious.

That being said, it still turned out as a fun (though expensive) event. 75% of the fun was partying with fellow members and their guests.

Being in the front row was also cool-AND there really wasn't a bad seat in the house.
Between members being able to buy multiple copies of signed Revival's, and members winning 50% of all the raffle items (most very valuable); it was IMO a great time.

my opinion:
This is just my personal opinion, but I do plan on asking Doris a few questions, but I truly believe the signing event was cancelled after the event because the Bank sponsor had a signing event from 4:30 to 5:30. They knew a few days or week before that they were canceling the signing event. SK presigned all the books days before the event. I ran into an employee of the bank who was "late" for their SK reception as a sponsor he was supposed to be there with about 40 other bank employees. as a $10k sponsor they were treated like royalty, I also think they paid for all food and drink for the reception. our $5k sponsorship did not get us any extra privileges, except front row seats, thanks Jerome!

My opinion:

Jane should of been nicer to the 8 of us, treated others very, very special. she was RUDE and needs to be taken to the woodshed!

I feel sorry for about half the guests at the reception, I think I photo bombed about 1/2 the pictures that were taken! I spotted myself, arm, leg, head, shirt in 12 pictures on the herald website!

ps . I had a blast! I am not complaining, just telling what happened, so that people know what to expect when they go to these things! I was surprised about how quickly things go from bad to good! How organizers change plans daily!

I truly think the plans changed because of the bank sponsorship and/or all of the knuckle head questions they were getting before the event. It was easier for them just to sell the pre signed books. And what a great system they had selling them! one book per ticket, and you cou could stand back in line and buy more if they didn't remember you. barlowe and I could only buy one, My wife bought nine, sometimes two at a time!

I agree Glen the presigned sellers were not nice(or the lady anyways)! The reception should have been handled better for sure! We were lucky enough to catch him before all the sponsors were in the room, but that doesn't help the rest which I feel is wrong, just my thoughts

I didn't gave a VIP ticket, but I agree that the lady selling the books was worse then the guy. I ended up with 3 copies of Revival, but she didn't want to sell me one of them, when I went back through the line (she said one per ticket) I told her it was another ticket and since it hadn't been stamped or anything she couldn't really deny me after I argued that. And after the show they still had more so I bought my 3rd copy.

I will say that even though I didn't win a raffle book (only bought one ticket - dumb) , and there was some confusion with the raffle, the ladies there were much more pleasant!

I agree Brian, I've been debating wether to contact her as well. King seemed to think that people donating the money that they did deserved more/interaction(not the right wording, but close enough), I only say this because when we had are books signed & she was he'll bent on him not he told her they're 5K sponsors & he was going to sign a book for each of us. I think if he had signed a book or a photo with each everyone would have been happy. I'll say the VIP wasn't what I expected but was very happy with getting the outcome I did. I just think that everyone in the room payed a lot & should have recieved equal treatment.

I wrote an email to Jane Plitt, expressing my extreme frustration with how she handled the VIP event for anyone who wasn't a $10,000 sponsor. I have no idea if she'll respond, but I'm not really sure if I care. It made me feel better simply letting her know that she was a complete jerk.

I was completely unaware about the bank having an earlier reception. We arrived at ~5pm and I didn't see anything going on inside, but if they were upstairs, they wouldn't have been visible anyway. Before I go mentioning that to Doris or Jane, I'd like to get additional verification of that.

(The pic doesn't provide good scale as the slipcase is over 14" tall)

Here is the spine of the slipcase:

http://www.thedarktower.org/custom/images/1506721886-2017%20Salems%20lot%20slipcase%20spine.JPG

I chose a distressed Italian goatskin that is black/purple/green, and is rough to the feel. It's how I would imagine Barlows skin looking when one opened his casket.

I recently acquired a page block for the CP S/L version of 'Salem's Lot. The block was still "folded and gathered":

Far less time. If all goes well, ~2 weeks. All of the materials except the endpapers are at the binder, and he has begun the work.

Weeks.... brilliant! Do you and the binder discuss design, Jerome? Or ask the designer to come up with something worthy, based on his other work? How does it work?

Randall Flagg
07-28-2020, 08:40 PM
I usually provide the materials and convey my wishes to the bookbinder.
This book has a few differences in material than other versions I have done, but still is an homage to the earlier Betts rebound versions.

The picture doesn't do it justice, but I chose a fine English goatskin for the 3/4 binding. The skin is pebbled to resembled Moroccan goat skin (which I was unable to source).

You should do your own with a personal goat.
That would be easier than eating your favorite, but actually you could do both.

After this post, I'm saving pics for when I get the book from the binder. I have a secret or two left for then.
The most challenging part of this whole endeavor has been obtaining the endpapers I wanted for the book. It took UPS ground over 14 days to get me the endpapers. By that time (Tuesday night), I had reordered the endpapers from the supplier, and asked for them to be shipped direct to the binder. As fate appears to have decided, the reorder, and my shipping of the original order are Scheduled (scheduled no longer means what is used to, now it means a wild guess, and likely to disappoint) to arrive this Saturday. We shall see.

I've used these endpapers on on my Different Seasons rebind projects. They were always for the "Fall from innocence" story-The Body. They represent the Fall colors, and the changes fall brings.
I think they are appropriate for 'Salem's Lot. The papers are called Thai Marble Momi Firestorm. They come from Thailand and are hand "crinkled". The paper is made from Kozu (a mistake I believe on the seller's website that should read Kudzu (https://www.britannica.com/plant/kudzu)) and Bamboo pulp. It's impossible to truly see, or feel the 3D texture on a computer or phone. Here is a two-dimensional image:

It took over 2 weeks for the endpapers to finally make it to the binder. Finally he has all of the parts!

I decided to be a bit different that the other rebinds I have seen, and go with the title stamped in blood red. All other stamping s in the traditional gold. Pics from the binder:
