View Full Version : Essential Christmas Viewing

So, in the weeks leading up to Christmas, what's on everyone's lists of essential viewing? What films or tv specials are you guaranteed to watch at least once this December?

Ones that immediately spring to mind are:

- Blackadder's Christmas Carol. I adore this one. A brilliant, ingenius twist on the ol' Dickens classic (which I do plan to actually read sometime this month). For those that don't know, Blackadder is one of the few comedies where Rowan Atkinson not only gets to play someone who's intelligent and a total bastard, he also occasionally gets a beard, as well. Pretty much all the Blackadders he plays throughout history are scheming, selfish gits. Except for Ebenezer Blackadder, one of the kindest and most generous (and most gullible) men in England. Until one fateful night, when a ghost comes to visit of course.
- Scrooged. Love this hysterical and modern day satirical take on it, as well. Bill Murray is actually hilarious in this one, and I love the Ghost of Christmas Past.
- Love Actually. Bit of a guilty pleasure this one, but still very enjoyable. Love all the different stories, especially the one with that guy from the Walking Dead in it.
- It's a Wonderful Life. 'Nuff said.

I also might re-watch This Is England '88, and possibly even check out A Christmas Story. So what's everyone else watching for Christmas this year?

This is my favorite time of the year, and I have a lot of movies I love to watch each Christmas. But, my essentials are:

A Christmas Story (although I own it on dvd, I refrain from watching it until the 24 hour marathon airs on TBS Christmas Day)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
It's a Wonderful Life (I am ashamed to say I didn't see this movie until a year or so back. But, it was awesome enough to become an essential immediately)
I always have to watch the classics like Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch, etc.

I will consume almost anything Christmas related. I add new dvds to my collection each year. I love this time of year!

Love all the mentions of the one essential Christmas film I forgot to include on my list, Die Hard. :) Another one I'm bound to watch that's set at Christmas is last year's fucked-up Scottish film Filth. Arthur Christmas
All the classic TV specials (Rudolph, Frosty, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Year Without a Santa Claus, Charlie Brown Christmas)
A Christmas Story (though I'm with Amanda in that I hold off watching it until the 24-hour marathon)

I also try and do a marathon of all The Office Christmas episodes.

A Christmas Story captures that time period so well that I thought it was made in the 50's when I was a kid. My dad is from that era (more so the 60's) and says they nailed the time period perfect. There are just so many great scenes in that film that most people can identify with while growing up.

Also, what kid can't identify with wanting something for Christmas so much that it consumes your life. I can see why people think it's overrated now since it plays for 24 hours, but to me it's a classic and was a big part of my childhood.

It might not be your cup of tea: the humour is overall very different to the US series, and it's way more uncomfortable to watch at times. I've heard from a lot of people used to the US series that it's difficult to enjoy the UK series as much, at times. Also, for the Christmas specials, the two specials are pretty much the end of the series, so not necessarily something to jump on board with. Not that it would take long to catch up, as there's only 14 eps including the specials altogether, just something to keep in mind.

Yeah, I saw that when I was looking them up the other day. I was thinking it was like the US series where it's an episode in the middle of a season.

DoctorDodge
12-05-2014, 09:20 AM
Nah, our Christmas specials in general are very odd in that they're usually in between series (after all, 6 eps is WAY too short to call it a 'season') or even after a show has finished. (Only Fools & Horses was especially notable for this, and if there's one Christmas special I recommend to everyone, it's an episode called "Heroes & Villains". It has one of the greatest Batman moments ever. And I mean ever.) What's also different to US Christmas specials is that they're usually broadcast on Christmas day, as well. (I was very shocked to find that US Christmas eps were broadcast sometimes weeks before the day itself.) So Christmas TV is a big thing, over here. Hell, it's probably one of my favourite things about the day itself.

Oh, that reminds me: the annual Doctor Who Christmas special is on this year! Looking forward to that! It's funny that it's only since the series was brought back that they started doing Christmas specials for the series, now ten years on it just wouldn't feel like Christmas without one.

Well, it's definitely a film that would be more near and dear to your heart if it was something you grew up with.

A Christmas Story (though I'm with Amanda in that I hold off watching it until the 24-hour marathon)

Ok, I have to ask, how on earth do the two of you hold off on watching this until the 24 hour marathon?! I need to watch it multiple times leading up to the marathon, and then as many times during those 24 hours. Unfortunately, when it's on tv, I rarely get to watch it. Christmas day we're not in front of the tv, and they end it early, so when I get home it's no longer playing :(

Also I finally watched Love Actually. It's been on my list since last year, and with quite a few people saying it was one of their essentials I had to see it. I was kinda disappointed. It was ok, but nothing really spectacular. I think there were too many stories, that I didn't feel attached to any one of them, since we just got brief glances into their lives and barely got to know them. Also I didn't know that Rick Grimes was it, so I was kinda surprised to see him. And it's weird he doesn't look nearly as good all cleaned up

For me it's just the tradition of turning on the marathon on Christmas morning (and then turning it off 5 minutes later because my dad gets distracted while we're opening presents, then turning it back on after  ). Plus, we usually don't have to go anywhere until late afternoon, so I'm usually able to catch it a few times.

Also, I don't understand all the love for Love Actually either. I agree that there were way too many stories. I saw it for the first time a few years ago and don't really need to see it again.

The only other marathon that usually happens every year that I can think of is The Twilight Zone marathon that plays on New Years Eve/Day on SyFy. Yes! The Christmas season is my double-edged sword. I look forward to it all year, and I'm so excited when it arrives. That's hilarious because my mom and my sister love watching those as well. I thought they were the only people watching those!

I came by to see if anybody mentioned One Magic Christmas. It turns out Brownings Childe mentioned it on page 1. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember watching it when I was a kid. In fact, it's one of my first movie memories. It's also the first time I remember having a movie crush. That's right - Mary Steenburgen. The crazy thing is that I still have a crush on her to this day.

I've been watching Arthur Christmas pretty obsessively this year.

That's on telly Christmas Day. Might have to watch that.

I also might have to watch one or two Doctor Who Christmas specials. There's a beautiful take on the classic A Christmas Carol that works way better than it should.

Oh, and Amanda: did you know that Nick Frost is playing Santa in this year's Christmas special?

I'm not sure if I should admit this or not, but I've been watching a ton of those lifetime and hallmark Christmas movies. I'm a sucker for them

That's hilarious because my mom and my sister love watching those as well. I thought they were the only people watching those!

It's a girl thing :)

Has anyone seen Frosty on tv this year? I've been waiting for it to show up but haven't come across it at all. I fear I must have missed it.

It came on last Saturday (the 13th) on CBS. That's when I watched it. And before that I think they played it Thanksgiving weekend.

Indeed it is, as you can now see. And while I don't think they'll include the quote in my current sig, it would seriously make my Christmas Day if they did!

You know, he surprisingly looks like a pretty good Santa. :orely:

What do you expect? His first name's "Nick" and his surname's "Frost". He was practically born for a Santa role with a name like that!

(Still one of the most beautiful fairy tale adaptations in film history.)
