Something to show soon. Completely unrelated to the Haven Foundation fundraiser.
I'll hold off from puzzles (for now), but rest assured this will be interesting.

I am guessing Jerome is self-publishing a limited edition book. The book will contain the DNA sequencing of Stephen King. In addition to the history, research and confirm DNA string there will be a DYI tutorial on cloning. In a unique move there will be a numbered edition of 26 books numbered 1 to 26 and a lettered edition of 467 lettered AA to AZ, BA to BZ, CA to CZ, etc. Some have speculated that this was done so that Jerome could have letter ‘RF’. I for one believe it was done because one of the features of the lettered edition is that the page will contain actual DNA from Mr. King and a number of these will be consumed during the attempted cloning process. Those with quick math skills may have notice that there are 467 not 468, this is not a typo but an intentional decision to omit letter ‘PC’ to avoid yet another debate on DT.ORG about the diminished value of a limited marked ‘PC’.

It’s that or a DT.ORG snuggy.

Yep but think Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and you'll understand.

I wonder if custom jobs of King books will become the next "remarque" that would be something.

Tim Miller tried that and I'm sure made some money off it, but I don't think the concept really took off in the King-collecting community.

On the other hand, I recall some special 'Salem's Lot customizations that did get appreciations, so maybe it depends on the book. Or perhaps it's just Tim that rubbed people the wrong way.

November, 2014

‘Salem’s Lot

Special Bound Edition

In 2004 a very small publishing house, known as Centipede Press, created one of the most treasured Stephen King limited editions published to date.

Betts Books and TheDarkTower.Org were fortunate enough to obtain the last two remaining sets of unbound pages from the 2004 Limited Edition publication. Using these last two sets, Betts Books, and TheDarkTower.Org have collaborated to create two remarkable pieces of craftsmanship.

This Book is One of The Only Two Specially Bound Sets

Both books were three-quarters bound in leather; one bound in black, and the other in red. Using fine hand binding and tooling techniques that have been passed down for generations, the books include the Jerry Uelsmann photographs, deleted scenes from the original manuscript, and the Stephen King afterword from the Pocket Books edition as published in the 2004 edition.

Advance Caveat-I do not have the books in hand, and have no pictures of the binding process. The books could arrive and be a complete failure.

A little background info:

~September 2014 I saw a rebound (actually a first bound) copy of 'Salem's Lot sell on ebay for a surprising amount. I already owned a red spine version. The thought came to me to track down all of the copies that Stu Tinker had bound; (as well as all other custom bound copies). There are numerous variations on what Stu had done (more to come later on that). I still am FAR from figuring out all of the iterations/permutations of the 15-20 copies Stu had bound. In addition, there are a few other page blocks that have been bound by others.
I contacted David at Betts to see if there were any remaining page blocks. In fact he had two. The quest began to find book binders and obtain pricing to see if doing a special 2 book set would be viable.

Are they already being bound or are you going to have to wait a year to be fit in to a schedule?

~September 2014 I saw a rebound (actually a first bound) copy of 'Salem's Lot selling on ebay (http://www.ebay.com) for a surprising amount. I already owned a burgundy spine version. The thought came to me to track down some if not all of the copies that Stu Tinker had bound; (as well as all other custom bound copies). There are numerous variations on what Stu had done (more to come later on that). I still am FAR from figuring out all of the iterations/permutations of the 24+1 copies Stu had bound. In addition, there are a few additional page blocks that have been bound by others.
I contacted David at Betts to see if there were any remaining page blocks. In fact he had two. The quest began to find book binders and obtain pricing to see if doing a special two book set would be viable.

II

A little history on the book blocks purchased by Stu Tinker (original owner of Betts Books):
Sometime in 2004 Stu Tinker purchased unbound page blocks from Jared Walters at Centipede Press. The blocks were from the Signed Limited version of Centipede’s ‘Salem’s Lot. Stu Tinker says he bought 29 page blocks from Centipede Press. One copy was bound by Gray Parrot (http://www.grayparrotbookbinder.com/) of Bangor Maine. Three-quarter bound in leather with a marbled cover, the book did not have the original art in it. Although magnificent, Stu felt the cost to have all remaining copies done by Parrot would not be economically feasible. Parrot’s cost was 2-3 times what the eventual binder’s quote was. Stu does not recall who the binder was that bound the other 24 copies, nor the issue price. He “thinks” the books sold for $150. Stu says four unbound blocks were sold to David Williamson as part of David’s acquisition of Betts Books.
24 blocks were three-quarter bound in leather with fabric covers. 12 blocks had black leather spines and 12 had burgundy leather spines. It’s confirmed that at least two different colors were used for the fabric boards on the burgundy bound book, but unknown how many, if any, other colors were used. Marbled endpapers were intentionally used “randomly” so that few if any books would be exactly the same. Additionally, several different color slipcases were used (red, grey and light brown have been confirmed-there may be more). To make things even more interesting, Stu chose to intentionally have the original artwork inserted in the books in incorrect order.
According to noted Stephen King collector Bob Jackson:
“The Gray Parrot edition has no illustrations at all but definitely uses the S/L text block. The pages are 13" tall and the thickness of the text block is 2 and 1/2".

Both the black and the burgundy Betts editions use S/L pages BUT they have been trimmed to 11 and 1/2" tall. It is easy to see that the top and bottom margins on each page are less on the Betts bound editions. Both the black and burgundy Betts editions have illustrations but they seem to be all over the place and randomly placed in the book. The placement of the illustrations is the same on both my black and burgundy editions but the placement is not even remotely similar to the placement in the S/L.”
The combination of two different spine colors, multiple board colors, random marbled endpaper usage, different color slipcases, and artwork in incorrect order means that few IF any books are exactly the same!

III

I began obtaining quotes from book binders for our special product. Grey Parrot and others proved to be too expensive. I stumbled upon a Bible restoration, book binder located in Oil City, Louisiana. Their website was archaic and showed only two examples of their finished work, but after calling them and talking to the owner a bit, and receiving a price quote that was almost unbelievably low, I decided to give them a try. I sent them pictures of the burgundy and black books Stu had done. Design ideas were bounced back and forth, with a decision to make two books that not only complimented each other, but that would also be homage to the original 24 books done by Stu. Partially through the process, the binder informed me there was no artwork in the book blocks! David and I ended up sending our only complete sets of the artwork to the binder- One from David, one from me. I had to photograph the original art placement using my S/L Centipede book as an example, then send hard copies of the pictures to the binder to insure the art would be placed in the books in the correct place (the binder’s computer had failed so we were back to true old fashioned letters and printed photos).
The binder felt that simply tipping in the art would not be long lasting and decided to sew the pieces in. They suggested using gold gilt to mask the edges of the boards where the leather is pressed to connect to the fabric. Raised hubs were used on the spines. A limitation page printing on Mohawk Superfine paper was tipped in at the rear of the books.

To be continued....

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we wanted them to be an homage to the first 24 Stu had done. They are similar, yet distinctly different. One of the big differences is that the page blocks were not trimmed to 11.5" and the correct 13" tall. The gold along the edges, the sewn in art, the limitation page, and a few other things also make these remarkable.

Pics coming in a minute. There are ~15 pics, so get ready.

Well I thought I was going to keep quiet and when I met Jerome this past Saturday I told him I was not planning on coming forward as the buyer. After a few days with the book I have decided it is just too nice of a book not to talk about it.
The craftsmanship and attention to detail is hard to put into words and even the photos don’t fully do it justice. The gold trim and lettering really look great on the covers and spine, but then to have the gold lace work to trim out the inside boards is fantastic. The quality of the fabric and leather used is wonderful and the almost seamless transition between the two is amazing. So thank you David and Jerome and for these two outstanding books.

I'm doing the best I can, but the paper/pages expanded and the gilt exfoliated from the page edges.
The coffin case was severely damaged also.
As I may have mentioned, it's a reinvention/reincarnation.
I'm starting to get excited about the progress.

Reinvention / Reincarnation for the coffin box Stand S/L sounds even more appropriate... A second life. A Frankenstein.

Without spending thousands of dollars for a professional restoration, I had to use the parts of the book that were salvageable, and re-imagine it.

Out of interest, was it sold by the person who suffered the flood? I would have thought if they claimed on the insurance, it would be the property of the insurance company...

A book press would work wonders on that thing. Trim the page block edges and either re-gild or "re-imagine" the edges. A new binding and it's a nice book.

I hope you can find the endpapers.

Book presses don't make a page block that is water absorbed flat. Feel free to take a PB book, soak it, let it dry and warp, then use a 10 ton press to flatten it out.
You can try to repair each page one-by-one, but it's very very time (money) consuming.
The bottom line is I had to remove the pages that were worth saving; the signature page and each art page, and abandon the rest. Fortunately the leather binding could still be used.

It's taken weeks because I can't find red endpapers that match well. I can find black, green etc, but red is tough.
I finally settled on a "cranberry" red.

I was very upset when I received it. I'm using the book block from the trade The Stand Uncut. The height was workable, and the lack of thickness was resolved by adding some blank pages for artwork, and putting a pouch in the rear of the book that would hold art also. The problem was, the book edge did not come out far enough. As soon as I saw it, I laughed, then got pissed. It was so bad, I didn't even take a picture of it, I simply sent it back.
The binder and I came up with an alternate idea.

In May, 2016 I bought a S/L The Stand on eBay. The book and case had been water damaged. The pages on the book had swollen and restoring 1,000 pages would be either impossible, or too expensive.

Auction Link (http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/222123471239?)

I had a local wood refinisher repair and refinish the box. He’s very good at what he does, and wonderfully affordable ($50).

I decided to try a different approach with the page block. I shipped the book to a book binder that I use.
I also sent a US trade 1st edition hardback. The page block of the trade is actually a bit taller than the S/L so the binder shaved the block down. The binder removed the signature sheet, all of the art, and the book break pages (Book I, Book II, Book III) from the S/L. He spent quite a bit of time restoring the pages and did a remarkable job. He bound each of the S/L pages in the trade book preceding the existing art, with protective vellum added.

The Trade edition is not as thick as the S/L so additional blank pages were added for future remarques/artwork. He bound the Trade pages and bonus items in the S/L leather book cover. Unfortunately it didn’t look well. The page edges came quite a bit shy of the cover edges and the book looked awkward. It looked so bad that when I opened the box, I didn’t even take (embarrassing) pictures. I simply shipped the book back.

Since he couldn’t pad the spine of the book to push the block outwards (one wouldn’t be able to open the book) I had to try a different approach. I eventually decided to use the leather S/L cover to create a slipcase for the trade edition, and have new leather binding bound on the trade block. All of the added blank pages were removed, and a thinner than normal leather was used to bind the trade block to “thin” the book so it would fit inside the slipcase. Gold colored cardboard was used for the top and bottom of the slipcase to resemble the gilded page edges on the S/L. A padded back was added to the slipcase so that the book would come to the edge properly. The cranberry endpapers looked odd to me so black endpapers were substituted.

The inside of the coffin box is ideal for added art. I placed a piece in the lid for a picture but haven’t actually put the corner art brackets in yet.

Judge for yourself whether you like it or not.

Great results, and great creativity in finding solutions that would accommodate what it had been and what it still was.

...but I'm always torn when an original book, no matter how badly damaged, is undone and rebound - if it had been me, I'd have kept the water damaged version as it was. Not that that's the right way to do things; it's just one of my quirks re: books.
