I forgot it was wednesday! love them all but the Carrie proofs are my favorite! Congratulations!

Thanks Glen. Yeah, the week went by fast. Pretty much like this year is going...

Congratulations Paul. Beautiful books and photos. The Plume PB Carrie, is it just the first chapter? I would have said it was a promo sampler if it didn't have 'uncorrected proof' printed on the title page. Looks like the Doubleday original cover is pasted in.

Thanks Jon. It looks like a promo sampler would, but it does say 'uncorrected proof' as you mentioned, so I'd consider it a proof, and for what I paid for it, I think I'll call it a proof instead of a sampler. Makes me feel better!

So yes the original cover art is pasted in. You can actually see the glue on the other side of that page. In terms of what's included in there, it's interesting because it's not the first chapter. It's 4 pages of text from the TP edition, in no discernible order. The page numbers on the left are what is shown in the proof, and the corresponding page number from the final book is on the right.

128 = 73
38 = 39
59 = 58
72 = 129 (Half way down the page)

Those are cool. Congrats Paul!

Nice, Paul. I don't have that Plume Carrie proof.

John

Thanks guys! And John, this may be the only proof I have which you don't!

Great acquisitions! The Carrie Plume partial proof was first discovered by Hannes Olverts. I wouldn't be surprised if he sold it to John S. (from the Betts consignment). Hannes was really good at finding impossible proofs all over the place.

Thanks. When I was reading over some of the older posts from the proofs thread, I remember seeing posts from Hannes. You're right, he was a wizard at finding rare proofs. I've wondered what his secret was.

Very intriguing proof. I wonder what the purpose of this little book was for with just four random pages. A test printing? Certainly not for proofreading or review. A very rare find! Congratulations.

Yes, it's interesting. It seems to be a combination of a "teaser" and proof. On one side of the interior text pages, there is a title page for Part Two. All it has on that page is the text "Part Two - Prom Night". So it seems to feature a small cross section of content from the final production; it has a few pages of text, the color 1st edition cover reproduction, and that Part Two title page. The back of it also has some details about the book such as publication date, ISBN, etc.

After this one, there are three more proofs left to show from the recent purchase. So there's a light at the end now! I forget which "Episode" we're on for Rare Proof Wednesday, but let's get into it.

This one was a trade for an item that was part of the proofs I'd purchased, so I would like to thank George for making this happen. I've been after a copy of this proof for a long time, and it has the publishers letter which is a nice bonus.

UK Dark Tower VII 1/100 numbered proof.

And here are all three of this series of proofs along with the 1st trade hardcover editions.

Good one John! I think the spinoff will be "Signed 1st edition Thursdays." I feel as if I've taken my proof collection as far as I can, at least in terms of what is available on the secondary market and/or what funds I have available for the ultra rare ones. I'd like to focus next on signed 1st's. Also possibly S/L editions.

I am planning a grand finale though for this season!

Congrats for this, now COMPLETE DT proof set !!!

Thanks Frank. It's complete in terms of the UK proofs for DTV, DTVI and DTVII, but I still need a bunch of other DT proofs, so I don't consider it complete yet until I have them all!

Of course the remaining ones I would need are super rare. All four of the Gunslinger proofs (Viking, Sphere and Plume) seen here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Stephen+King+Manuscripts+Proofs +and+ARCs:Gunslinger+The+DT1), and the two orange The Drawing of the Three proofs seen here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Stephen+King+Manuscripts+Proofs +and+ARCs:Drawing+of+the+Three+The+DT2). There's also a Plume W&G as well as a black tape spine state for Susannah. I may even have missed one! The rest I have. So I've got a ways to go before I'd feel I have a complete set of DT proofs.

VERY nice set!
Now, I wonder if all those proofs are numbered, in which case, you should hunt for a matching number :p

Thanks Jeremy. The only one that is numbered is VII. I'm relieved they aren't all numbered. One less thing to try and match up. Would have been cool though.

Beautiful stuff. The readers copies of the DT books are definitely handsome, especially with those covers!

I've thought about getting a PB set of the DTs to go back and read over. I have all the Kindles but there is just something about holding a book that makes it all worth it.

Congrats!

Thanks. I've tried to read books on my iPad or iPhone, and I just can't do it. I have to hold the book in my hands. There are definitely some benefits to e-books, but the experience is so different to holding the actual book.

It sounds like just the kind of book I'd like. It makes me think of Art Scott who has edited some books on Robert McGinnis cover art. I met him at that vintage paperback show earlier in the year, and got a book which he co-authored titled The Paperback Covers of Robert McGinnis.

In the introduction to this book, he writes about how he'd been collecting the original paperbacks which featured McGinnis artwork on the cover. Apparently there are close to 1100. According to the intro, his collection numbers around 1400 paperbacks including certain reprints. The book has a bibliography of all the paperbacks along with color photos. Really nice book.

This is the penultimate post of the proofs from that recent purchase. Last one next week, and then the grand finale!

The Joyland ARC which is quite scarce. I don't know how many copies are out there but I know it isn't many.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5390_zpsfmzlkljj.jpg

So while I was photographing the proof, I thought I'd get together the various versions of the book that I have. I was surprised to see how many I had. I was thinking, do we really need 8 different versions of the same book...!?

From bottom left: The new Illustrated edition, the "Gift" hardcover edition, the trade paperback 1st edition, the limited signed hardcover, a repeat of the 1st edition paperback (realized after I took the shot and had already put the books away), a later printing of the trade paperback with the red band across the top, a smaller mass market paperback, and the Turtleback edition. Proof takes center stage.

I'm missing the Lettered edition, and apparently there was a UK paperback edition which I seem to have missed.

Hey Glen, thanks! I also really liked this book. It's up there with my favorites. Yes, this was from David from that last proof consignment. I don't really collect the Turtleback books, but I do tend to get certain titles where the 1st edition was a paperback, and they're really inexpensive.

Thanks Jon. Yes, I got the first copy and paid top dollar unfortunately. I think you got the other copy after it was reduced in price a couple times. I'm happy to have it anyway. I also thought the Joyland paperback was universal, but there was a discussion recently, and apparently the conclusion was that there is an edition that was printed in the UK. Michaël has one.

Thanks Michael. I haven't been around too much recently - too much time at work and in hospitals, so this completely passed me by. I found what I was looking for in the comments section in the catalogue of the 1st edition of Joyland. If you wish me to get one for you, Paul, just let me know.

Welcome to RPW! This will be the last episode before the final posting next week. A quick note about the finale. I realized about halfway through posting the proofs from this purchase that I didn't really have anything fitting a grand finale. I had started out strong with the signed Danse Macabre proof, and although the rest of the proofs are certainly scarce and sought after, I felt that I needed something special for the finale other than what I had left.

Luckily, around the time this was all going on, I happened to have found two other proofs, not from this initial purchase, but still rare and which I felt were better suited. So next week, you'll get to see what those are.

For now, here we go for this week.

Subterranean Press tarde cover proof for The Shining. Supposedly 20 copies exist.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_4960_zpsisbkjym5.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_4962_zpsrwuvd1oo.jpg

The proof is produced so well, that once you look on the inside, it feels more like a finished product than a proof, with the color printing and quality of the paper.

I'm really excited about this one. I've been reading/re-reading all of Stephen King's books, and recently read Firestarter for the first time. It has become one of my favorites and I wanted a nice signed copy for my collection, so I found this one.

It is an association copy, signed and inscribed to Otto Penzler, the famous mystery book publisher and bookseller. It is dated 5 days prior to the official publication date, and it is also an advance review copy which includes the review slip and publisher's publicity sheet. The DJ is bright and not faded as you often see with this book.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5538_zps39dzkc5n.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5543_zpsq3qvorux.jpg

While we're on the topic of Otto Penzler, these arrived the same day. This is the UK and US edition of a new anthology featuring King's The Doctor's Case. And the proof as well.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5544_zpskdiagubw.jpg

Welcome to RPW's grand finale! After this, normal programming will resume.

These two proofs were not part of the original Betts purchase, but they sort of came along around that time and they seemed fitting for the finale, so here you go!

Enjoy!

I think I'm starting to act like Rogier... I've been buying these UK paperbacks as reading copies, and as they start to add up on the shelves, I really like how they look.

So I'm thinking of getting all the rest. I much prefer the cover art on these than the current US paperbacks. I am usually concerned about finding 1st printings, but to do that on all of these will be a very difficult task, so I'm fine with them not being 1st printings. It's more to just read them, and then enjoy how they all look on the shelf.

Okay, here's a shot of the proofs bookcase. It's blurry as it's tough to get a clear shot of a whole bookcase with the iPhone camera. This is basically my entire Stephen King proof collection, taking up 6 shelves. While I was posting this, I went back to look at some previous photos I'd taken of this bookcase and was surprised at how much the collection had grown.

This (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18803-Book-Collection-zelig&p=881460&viewfull=1#post881460) is the first picture when I started the thread. Although I had difference bookcases then, the proofs were taking up the top 2 shelves on the last bookcase. Then I had taken this (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?18803-Book-Collection-zelig&p=915143&viewfull=1#post915143) one when I changed to difference cases. There was 3 shelves then, and I see just spilling over to the 4th. And now we have all 6, with a little space at the end for a few extras.

Thanks guys! And yes, you "two-shelfers" need to get crackin'!

Looks nice, Paul. Which proof is your favorite?

Oh man Bob, that's a tough one. I had a look over them again, and if it were purely for sentimental reasons, believe it or not, it would be the UK proof of The Dark Half because that was the very first proof I ever got. It was free, direct from the publisher's rep at the time of release and it brings back many happy memories of the time.

If I were to exclude the nostalgia, then I'd say either the signed US Cujo proof with the 'Don't let the dog bite" inscription, or the signed Danse Macabre.

Now you've got me going... if it were based purely on production value, then I'd say the UK Revival proof. I've always liked how that one looks, outside and inside. The UK Under the Dome is a close 2nd.

Great photo with a good number of scarce proofs in great condition :) so, which of the remaining ones are on the top of you want list right now?

Good question. Here's my current want list (http://zelig.io/want-list/). I've separated out the manuscript states, because I consider that a separate collecting goal. As I started down that road, I realized there were way more known states that I realized, they're really hard to find, and if you do, they're priced higher than I'd feel comfortable spending. So those are a far off goal. The list of remaining US and UK proofs are the ones I am looking to add to my collection, although most of what is left are the rare/ultra-rare ones.

Thanks John. It was a lot longer not too long ago. I've got a total of 115 proofs, and around 25 missing from US and UK lists. I don't know which ones are relatively easy to find. Maybe the CD ones. But the rest, I haven't seen them for sale. A few were on Betts, but by then I'd tapped out.

Dear Santa. I need a lettered Gunslinger please. And maybe also a lettered Regulators. If those aren't handy, then a signed limited Firestarter will do. One for each day they were signed.

Yes, that proof want list is a great place to start for the Secret Santa! And I am also missing a UK Danse Macabre and a signed Mr. Mercedes!

Of course I don't expect any pricey treats such as those. I will be happy with whatever I get.

This is actually the Australian edition, but the 'airport edition' is basically the same. I think I mentioned in your thread about where you can buy this one, or maybe it was the UK edition. Anyway, here's a link (http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=17455320745&searchurl=bi=s&ds=30&sts=t&bx=off&sortby=17&tn=bazaar%20of%20bad%20dreams&an=stephen%20king&recentlyadded=all) to where I bought the UK edition (hasn't arrived yet.) From left: US Proof, UK proof, US Trade 1st, UK Trade 1st, UK WHSmith variant, UK Trade Paperback, Australia Trade Paperback, Dutch numbered hardcover, Dutch Trade Paperback.

The US 1st Trade edition has the early review letter.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5691_zpsfvo1psgq.jpg

And just for fun, here are 14 of the first appearances of the stories from Bazaar. The one that is missing is on order and I didn't feel like waiting for it before I posted these. It's the anthology A Book of Horrors which includes "The Little Green God of Agony."

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5693_zpsggigkcc8.jpg

Instead of typing all the individual issues, here's a list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bazaar_of_Bad_Dreams).

What is not pictured are: Mile 81, UR and Bad Little Kid which were eBooks. I have seen pictures of a printed edition of Bad Little Kid, but I don't have a copy. Would love one though. And of course, a couple of stories which were previously unpublished.

My hatred for PB's is not only somewhat irrational, but a personal vow I made to myself. Lord knows I have read hundreds of PB's in my early years and the days of commuting to NYC. I just vowed that at some point in my career I would never again read a PB or, own one for that matter.

My hatred for PB's is not only somewhat irrational, but a personal vow I made to myself. Lord knows I have read hundreds of PB's in my early years and the days of commuting to NYC. I just vowed that at some point in my career I would never again read a PB or, own one for that matter.

So don't mind me, I was just joking with you, my friend. I think my hatred of PB's is about as well known around here as my feeling for that team from, Boston!!! LOL

All good Bill. I won't hold it against you... :-P

Very nice! How much was it, if you don't mind me asking?

It's fairly easy to find out with a little research... but you know now anyway... he he....

So I had a great birthday today. Went for lunch with my mom. Thanks ma! Here's what the dessert looked like at the start.

And after I began to destroy it.

Also received my Secret Santa gift today. Will post that in the SS thread.

And with the rest of my Ernest Cline collection. All signed except the Hebrew paperback. Edit: UK paperback isn't signed.

Thanks John. There's only two books to read, so not too bad. RPO was one of my favorite books this year. Highly recommended.

Thanks Jon. Yeah it is a lot for two books. What happened to the days when you'd buy a 1st edition and you'd be done. Now it's usually a case of variants, multiple proof states, export editions, large prints, limiteds, etc.

I've been spending some time finding certain variant editions that I didn't have. Here are two of them.

The Canadian edition of The Regulators showing Viking as the publisher on the DJ and copyright page. And the different price on the DJ.

Cell with the larger shoe on the spine of the DJ. It's my understanding that this is a book club edition, although it does have a price on the DJ. The other major difference is the alternate colors of the boards.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5949_zpstdcsmzpe.jpg

I've also been refining my paperback collection and in the process came across some editions I never knew existed.

This is a UK trade paperback of 11/22/63 with the same cover art as the hardcover. Unfortunately not a 1st printing, but still nice to have.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5950_zpshd7nsrxb.jpg

I thought this one was interesting. Mass Market Paperback size for Lisey's Story with the same cover as the hardcover. It's an export edition and according to the sticker, it was available before the US paperback came out.

Also, the third one from the left is a larger format paperback which I hadn't seen before.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c330/zelig7/IMG_5951_zps8mpdjgu9.jpg

And finally, this is a smaller Mass Market size paperback of the UK Doctor Sleep which according to the cover was for sale only in the South Asia market.
