Note:
Although you can vote for a maximum of 6 films in the polls, it doesn't necessarily mean you HAVE to vote for 6. We encourage you to vote only on those you strongly feel deserve to move on to the next round.

Island of Lost Souls is an early adaptation of the Island of Dr. Moreau, very disturbing and much better than the Brando version in my opinion, it was banned for over 25 years by the BBFC due to disturbing content for anyone who has not seen it, it's a real gem!

And on blu-ray from Criterion!

Not surprised to see District 9 doing so well; an exceptional bit of sci fi, that one. The visuals and art direction are incredible. It's doubly impressive that it was Blomkamp's directorial debut. Talk about coming out of the gate strong.

I know Edge of Tomorrow is a recent film and not a lot of people have seen it, but I feel it's deserving of being in this tournament.

I was hoping bears would move Nausicaä's bar along :(

Maybe I need to watch District 9 again. I didn't care for it much the first time through.

District 9 kicks ass. Brilliant allegory.

Well, if you can look past the gore, then you will have missed the main attraction.

Despite what anybody thinks about District 9, it's the rare original film that was a box office success and got an Oscar nomination for best picture. I also loved the film and find some of the themes to be very timely and interesting.

I think District 9 is another one of those films that divides people depending on when you saw it. I watched it early in its run before the hype machine got going. I know a lot of people who saw the film after it got popular and nominated for an Oscar and I think the expectations were just too high. I'm not saying that's the case for you guys, but I noticed that among friends and family.

It's a really beautifully-made film. Did you watch the trailer that was posted? I do think bears would like it. Those ohms!

Okay, fine: I'll grant you all that District 9 is at least worth one viewing. If you have a strong stomach. Still I'll be disappointed if it's voted higher than something like Children of Men.

Too bad we didn't get Back to the Future II nominated, that's really my favorite, I feel it's a much better movie, but also the time travel aspect is much more complex with alternative timelines and going back to the first film. Just awesome stuff.

If the reason we don't have weather control and portable fusion is that Marty changed the timeline, then he had better be one damn fine guitarist by now!

Agreed. I'm a huge fan of Children of Men. I know some people that couldn't stomach District 9 because they hate seafood and they said the aliens reminded them of shrimp (they were called prawns). That didn't bother me, then again I love shrimp.

Only 26 people votes here so far, while other polls have 30-31 voters. At least a couple more Nausicaä votes are in order, people!

I didn't find District 9 to be overly gory. The fingernail scene...okay, I'll give that to the gore but when it comes to the action stuff I thought the gore was gritty and realistic and really helped the documentary aspect of the film. What keeps me coming back to District 9 is the allegory...best sci-fi allegory since Fantastic Planet imo.

pathoftheturtle
07-10-2014, 02:21 PM
So you agree with me that it's built into the film's appeal. The matter of opinion is just whether gritty faux documentary is an especially favorable style. And to reiterate, I acknowledge the main allegory is somewhat redeeming, but I more admire Children of Men handling the issues with a slightly finer touch.

The following films will be moving on

Island of Lost Souls
Pi
Edge of Tomorrow
Solaris
District 9
Back to the Future I

mae

Too bad that Pi moves on instead of Nausicaä, since it's not really sci-fi - not that I want to restart that conversation again, but at least Nausicaä got another vote before being eliminated.

Mattrick
07-14-2014, 08:52 AM
Well Pi is more a fictional film about the science of mathematics and all the answers understanding that math can offer. I consider it science fiction it's just very, very realistic sci-fi imo.
